Scoutmaster's Minute
September 13, 2009 --
Once again, another year of scouting has started up. In September, I will have completed 3 years as Scoutmaster for Troop 77 having taken over for Dave Hundt at the Fall Court of Honor on September 20, 2006. I got involved with Troop 77 back in 2001 when my son, Austin, crossed over from Cub Scouts. During that time, I have had a lot of fun and I have had the chance to meet a lot of great kids and seen many of them develop into fine young men.
Sometimes it has been a bit crazy. There have been a few times when we had to scramble to get enough drivers for the campout. There was the one campout when we didn’t have anyone available to pull the trailer so we just stuffed all the gear into the cars. But typically things have always worked out in the long run.
There have been a few times (OK maybe more than a few) when I got home from work on Wednesday and really just wanted to plop down into a chair and watch TV. But then, if I wasn’t heading off to scouts, I would be doing just that, sitting in front of the TV or the computer. As scout leaders we have been given the opportunity to help influence the lives of these boys. To help them make good decisions. To become leaders and be involved in their community. To do more with their lives than just be plopped in front of the TV or the computer.
In 2009 this troop could have as many as 7 Eagle Scouts. Five scouts have already completed their project and two boys have projects in the works. Now being an Eagle Scout certainly doesn’t guarantee future success in life. But, I have crossed paths with a number of Eagle Scouts out of Troop 77 and I have generally found that they have gone on to even greater accomplishments. I have to believe that scouting had something to do with that.
