BACHELORS II WINS 2014 CHICORA AREA SOFTBALL LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP

#2 Secrets of Hair Design vs. #1 Bachelors II (Bachelors II leads series 3-1)
Bachelors II held on to win Game 1 of the Chicora League Championship Series 10-9. B II got on the board
first with 2 runs in the bottom of the 1st inning on RBI's by Travis Bellis & Joe Callihan. They extended
their lead to 6-0 in the bottom of the 2nd inning. Doug Augustine led the inning off with a solo homerun &
Tyler Callihan had a bases loaded triple later in the inning. In the top of the 4th inning, Secrets of Hair Design
got on the board when David Tompkins drove in 2 runs with a 2-out hit to right field. Bachelors responded
with 4 runs of their own in the 4th, including RBI singles by Josh Behrens and Joe Callihan, & a 2 RBI triple by Travis Bellis.
In the top of the 5th, Secrets broke out for 7 runs, making the score 10-9. They strung together 7 hits in the inning,
including a 2-run homerun by Mick Fennell. Dalton Koebler, Matt Baranchak, Cody West, & Bob Swartout 
each drove in runs in the inning as well. 10-9 would be the final score, since both teams left runners in scoring
position in the final innings. Top hitters for Bachelors II were Travis Bellis with a homerun & a triple, and Doug
Augustine with a homerun and a single. Mark Sherwin added 2 singles. For Secrets of Hair Design, Mick 
Fennell had a homerun and a triple, and Taylor Ford, Cody West, & David Tompkins each added 2 singles. 
The teams were even in the hit department, each getting 12 hits. Chris Bellis was the winning pitcher. 
Game 2 will be played Friday, August 15 at St. Wendelin's.

In Game 2 of the CLCS, Bachelors II entered the top of  the 7th inning down 3-1 but was able to score 
4 runs to take a 5-3 lead. Secrets of Hair Design scored 1 in the bottom of the 7th and got the potential
tying run to third base & the potential winning run to second. However, they were not able to get them 
home, giving Bachelors II a 5-4 victory. Secrets opened the scoring in the 1st inning with a Mick Fennell
solo homerun. Bachelors II finally evened the score in the top of the 5th when Shawn Bellis came off
the bench to hit a solo homerun. Secrets of Hair Design responded with a run in each of the 5th & the 6th 
innings. In the 5th Bob Swartout singled and Darren Blakely drove him home with a double. In the 6th Cody 
West doubled and Taylor Ford drove him in with an RBI single. In the top of the 7th for B II, Mark Sherwin 
led off with a single, Keith Lehman and Jim Harmon each followed with a single, tying the game at 3. Then, 
Shawn Bellis legged out a 2-run inside the park homerun to opposite field, giving B II a 5-3 lead. In the bottom 
of the 7th inning, Ryan Fennell led off with a  double and scored on a single by John Crummie. Darren Blakely 
followed with a single but would only reach third base as B II pitcher Tim Dietrich was able to get the next 2 batters 
out. Sherwin & Bellis were the only 2 Bachelors II players with 2 hits, Blakely had 2 doubles & a single for Secrets 
of Hair Design. Bachelors II out hit Secrets 9-8. Tim Dietrich was the winning pitcher. Game 3 will be Sunday at 
St. Patrick's at 4:30. Game 4, if needed, will be at 6:00 the same day. 

Secrets of Hair Design controlled Game 3 from the beginning, beating Bachelors II by a score of 14-2. Secrets
got on the board in the first inning after Mick Fennell tripled and scored on an error, then extended their lead
to 7-1 by the third inning when they strung together 5 hits and scored 5 runs in the inning. Secrets of Hair
Design outhit Bachelors II, 20 to 9. Leading the hitting attack was Alex Ziegler and Matt Baranchak, each 
with a double and 2 singles. Mick Fennell and John Crummie each had a triple and a double. Ryan Fennel and
David Tompkins each had a double and a single. Bob Swartout had a homerun and Taylor Ford added
2 singles. Andrew Larimore was the lone B II player with 2 hits, he had 2 singles. David Tompkins was the
winning pitcher. Game 4 was played immediately after Game 3. 

Game 4 turned out nearly opposite of Game 3, with Bachelors II winning the game 13-1 and clinching the
2014 Championship of the Chicora Area Softball League. B II took a 3-0 lead in the 2nd inning and held the lead
the rest of the game. In this game, Bachelors II outhit Secrets of Hair Design 10-1. Top hitters for Bachelors II
were Eric McCue with a double and 2 singles and Jim Harmon with a triple and a double. Also, Travis Bellis
homered and Joe Callihan tripled for Bachelors II. Alex Ziegler had Secrets' lone hit, with a single in the 4th
inning, and scored the lone run on an error. Chris Bellis was the winning pitcher.

Congratulations to both teams on an excellent season. This is Bachelors II's seventh Chicora League Championship.
Secrets of Hair Design finished 2nd in the regular season, 3rd at the Class C state tournament, and reached the
Chicora League Championship Series in just their first year of existence. 


SEMI-FINALS

#3 Millerstown Inn vs. #2 Secrets of Hair Design (Secrets of Hair Design won the series 2-0)
Secrets of Hair Design won Game 1 of this series by a score of 10-8. Secrets was led offensively by 
John Crummy's inside the park homerun. Tay Ford, Ty Ford, Cody West, and Spencer Murray each added
2 singles for the winners. Mike Dorondo hit a homerun for Millerstown Inn. David Tompkins was
the winning pitcher. Game 2 will be Thursday at 6:15 at St. Wendelin's.

Secrets of Hair Design won Game 2 by a score of 16-6 to sweep the series. They had a strong hitting
performance led by Ryan Fennell (homerun, double, single), Bobby Swartout (homerun, double, 2 singles), 
Alex Ziegler (4 singles), Tay Ford (triple, 3 singles), Matt Baranchak (homerun), David Tompkins ( 2 singles), 
and Dalton Koebler (2 singles). Nathan Markle homered for MTI. Tompkins was the winning pitcher.
Secrets of Hair Design advances to the 5 game championship series in just their first year in the Chicora
Area Softball League.

#5 Ball's Distributor vs. #1 Bachelors II (Bachelors II won the series 2-0)
Bachelors II won Game 1 of this series by a score of 10-2. Bachelors broke open a 2-1 game in the top
of the 3rd when they scored 4 runs on RBI's by Tyler Callihan, Boo Augustine, and Andrew Larimore.
They got 4 more in the 4th, including a 3-run homerun by Callihan. Top hitters were Callihan with a
homer and a single, Eric McCue with a triple and a double, and Larimore with triple and a single. Josh
Loos homered and singled for Ball's. Tim Dietrich was the winning pitcher, scattering just 6 hits. Game 2
will be Thursday at 6:15 at St. Patrick's

Bachelors II won Game 2 by a score of 20-10 to sweep this series, and advance to the 5 game championship
series. They were led at the plate by Tyler Callihan (homerun, triple, double), Eric McCue (homerun, double,
single), Joe Callihan (2 doubles, single), Doug Augustine (double, 2 singles), Boo Augustine (3 singles), and
Travis Bellis (homerun, single). For Ball's Distributor, Brandon Wissinger had an inside the park homerun
and a single, Jay Wagner doubled and singled, and Mike Browning added 2 singles. Chris Bellis was the 
winning pitcher. 

 
FIRST ROUND

#6 Armstrong / Countyline vs. #3 Millerstown Inn (Millerstown won the series 2-0)
The Chicora Area Softball League Playoffs got underway Monday at St. Wendelin's Field, 
with Millerstown Inn scoring in the bottom of the 7th inning to win 9-8.
Armstrong tied the game in the top of the 7th inning on a homerun by Richie Toy. 
But Mike Dorondo drove in Nathan Markle in the bottom of the 7th to secure victory for MTI.
For Millerstown, top hitters were Ian Jewart with 3 singles, JR Brewer with 2 doubles, 
and Nick Morrow with 2 singles. For Armstrong/Countyline, Tony Kriley had 2 singles and a double, 
Toy had a double along with his homerun, and Jeremy DeLuca added 2 singles.
Sluggo Smith was the winning pitcher. 

Millerstown Inn closed out the series with another 1 run victory Tuesday night. MTI trailed 2-1 going
into the 6th inning, but scored 2 in the 6th and held off Armstrong in the final 2 frames to win the 
game 3-2. MTI's other run was a solo homerun by Zach Moore in the top of the 1st inning. Dave Craig was
the winning pitcher for Millerstown, allowing just 6 hits. Kenny Bussard pitched well in defeat for Armstrong,
allowing 7 hits. Moore also had a single for MTI and Ian Jewart added 2 singles. Tony Kriley had 2 singles for 
Armstrong. Millerstown Inn advances to the Semi-Finals next week. Both teams will compete in the ASA of 
PA Class B West Tournament this weekend in Meadville. 

#5 Ball's Distributor vs. #4 Chicora VFW (Ball's Distributor won the series 2-0)
Ball's Distributor needed 8 innings to do it, but held off a late Chicora VFW rally to win Game 1 by a score
of 15-12. Chicora VFW scored 6 runs in the bottom of the 7th inning to tie the game at 11 and force extra-
innings. Joey Friel scored the tying run by stealing home. Ball's scored 4 runs of their own in the top of the 8th. 
Then, VFW opened the bottom half of the inning with an inside the park homerun by Dustin Defrancisis 
but Ball's held them scoreless the rest of the inning to secure the victory. Leading the way for Ball's 
Distributor was player/manager Eric Wiley with a 2-RBI triple and a single, Sam Wiley with a double and
a single, and Heath Shreffler with a double and a single. For VFW, Josh Reddick had 2 triples and a single 
and Luke Slater had a double and a single. Ryan Protzman was the winning pitcher for Ball's. Game 2 will
be Thursday at St. Wendelin's at 6:00. Game 3, if needed, will be immediately following.

Ball's Distributor won Game 2 by a score of 6-5. Justin McGowan hit a solo homerun in the bottom of the 6th
inning to take the lead, and Ball's was able to hold VFW scoreless in the 7th. Ryan Protzman hit a solo 
homerun and was the winning pitcher. McGowan also had an inside the park homerun and Mike Browning
& Sam Wiley each doubled and singled for Ball's. Eli Christy homered and singled for Chicora VFW. Ball's 
Distributor advances the Semi-Final round next week.

#7 Kittanning Eagles vs. #2 Secrets of Hair Design (Secrets of Hair Design won the series 2-0)
Secrets of Hair Design won Game 1 by a score of 10-6. David Tompkins led the way as winning pitcher and 
top hitter with a double and 2 singles. Darren Blakely had an inside the park homerun and a single, Bobby
Swartout added a double and single, and Tay & Ty Ford each had 2 singles. 

Secrets of Hair Desing won Game 2 by a score of 11-2. Top hitters were Bobby Swartout and Dalton Koebler
each with a homerun and a single. David Tompkins homered, John Crummy had an inside the park homerun
and a single, Darren Blakely doubled and singled, and Tanner Wahler added 2 singles. Tompkins was
again the winning pitcher. Secrets of Hair Design advances to the Semi-Final round and will face
state champion Millerstown Inn.

Millerstown Inn - 2014 ASA of PA Class B West Champions

Millerstown Inn went 6-1 to win the ASA of PA Class B West Tournament August 2nd and 3rd in Meadville. They beat Bison Bulls (Franklin), No Offseason (Culmerville), Tangles Salon (Lancaster County), Fisher's (Lancaster County), and Lucky Louies (Harborcreek) to reach the championship game. Lucky Louies won the first game of the championship forcing the "if needed" game. Millerstown then won it 19-12.

Leading hitters for Millerstown were Dan Kruper (.653 avg) with  a homerun, Justin Alessio (.610 avg) with 2 doubles & 5 triples, and Zach Moore (.541 avg). Moore also came up big defensively when he threw the potential game winning run out at homeplate from rightfield in the bottom of the 7th inning of the winner's bracket final. Sluggo Smith was the winning pitcher for 5 of the victories, Ryan Protzman picked up the win in their other victory.

Chicora VFW - 2014 Class C West Champs

The Chicora VFW went 5-0 to capture the Class C West Championship in Meadville Sunday, July 13th. They won their first 3 games against Bissells Silver Star (Sharon), McCormick (Erie), and Fishbone (Schuylkill County) before facing Chicora League rival Secrets of Hair Design in the winners bracket final. VFW won 12-10, holding off a 7th inning Secrets rally. VFW beat Ma Parkers (Erie) 12-9 in the Championship Game.

They were led offensively by Tim Giebel's outstanding hitting performance; he was 10 for 14, with 7 homeruns, 16 RBI, and 6 intentional walks. Other top hitters were Dustin Defrancisis (.684 avg, 2 triples, 5 doubles), Josh Friel (.647 avg, 6 triples, 2 doubles), Adam Steiner (.529 avg, 3 doubles), and Doug Defrancisis (.471 avg, 2 triples, 4 doubles). Dustin Defrancisis handled the pitching duties for all 5 games.

A Chicora team comprised of members of the Chicora VFW, Bachelors II, and Millerstown Inn won the Annual Shenango Valley Memorial Day Weekend Tournament in West Middlesex, PA. The team was 3-0 in pool play, earning a first round bye with the #1 seed in the 7 team single elimination tournament. Then went on to go 2-0 in single elimination.
