About Us
The Calgary Cardinals first originated as a Calgary Senior Men's team in 1965. At the time, the team played their games out of Foothills Stadium, Glenmore Park and later what is now called Optimist Park in Calgary. They are the lone remaining team from the Foothills Major Baseball Association from that time period, as during the early 1980's the FMBA and the Cardinals moved to it's current location in North Deerfoot Park. During the early 1990's, the Cardinals split into two different teams: a Junior program for the college level players, and a Senior team for the 30 and over players. The Senior team left the FMBA a few years later to play in the Country League while the Junior team remained in the FMBA.
Over the next few years, the Junior program eventually dissipated and merged with the White Sox of the FMBA. This new team left the FMBA to play in the Alberta Sunburst League, becoming their own program called the Calgary Redbirds. The Senior Cardinals at this time were primarily an over-38 team, and when returning to the FMBA in 2003 they won the league championship. That year the Cardinals also participated in the Over-38 MSBL World Series in Arizona, winning the tournament vs. teams from all across the US. The next few years however many of the older players moved on, and the Cardinals brought in many current college or ex-college players to create a new core which is present today.
The Cardinals have a long past, having won many provincial championships at various levels, while also having participated in National tournaments. We are committed to being a championship calibre-team both in the FMBA and at the provincial level. We participate in tournaments across Alberta in addition to our league play.
