HFL Just Misses State Title in Battle with Shoram-Wading-River

The HFL Lady Cougars played in their first NYS championship game on Saturday, June 13th at SUNY Cortland vs the two time defending champions from Long Island, Shoram-Wading River Wildcats. The HFL fans packed the stands to support the Cougars, cheering and chanting H-F-L again and again. Tension was as high as the humidity as the game began.
HFL’s Maggie Stankaitis won the first draw in a scramble for the ball, and got it up field. SWR’s stole the ball and its defenders transitioned the ball back to our defensive end of the field where senior goalie, Emily Stankaitis saved the first shot on goal. SWR pounded Emily again where she saved the 8-meter shot as well. SWR got on the board first at 21:29 and got their second at 20:00. Senior Jill Maier nailed a shot but got a charge call and no goal. Junior, Lindsay Powell plowed in and earned then buried an 8-meter shot. Jill won the next draw and dumped to senior Mandy Willison who brought wthe SWR goalie to life making a point blank save. Lindsay scurried and weaved in for the next HFL goal making the score 2-2. Junior attack, Sierra Sarkis grabbed a ground ball right in front of the SWR goalie and put the ball right behind her for the next Cougar score. SWR answered at 16:42 making the score 3-3. SWR got the possession and TGFE, thank god for Emily! Lindsay found herself in a battle with a Wildcat defender and got the ball, briefly, as SWR scored 3 in row. HFL’s Mandy Willison also stole the ball back and got it into Maggie who earned an 8-meter shot, but the mountainous goalie saved the shot. Anna LeGrett poured on the back burners and scored on a fast break, and then Lindsay nailed another 8-meter shot bringing the score to 5-6 SWR. SWR came on strong again and scored 2 more but Mandy buried a quick shot assisted by Lindsay with 3 seconds on the clock left in the half. HFL hit the locker room with the score 6-8, only down by 2.
After the half, SWR got a quick goal but then the game became a defensive battle. Sophomore defender Ashley Moyer checked the ball away and then did it again, increasing the intensity on the field. Mandy stole the ball again and sent it up field to Lindsay who was flattened in the eight. Senior, Erin York and Hillary Cox attacked the SWR’attack and Erin caused the turnover getting the ball up field only to have it taken back. Meanwhile SWR got 2 more goals bringing the score to 6-11. Lindsay won the ball off the draw in a scrum and ran it straight to the net, scoring HFL’s 7th goal. SWR answered making the score 7-12 with 6:38 on the clock. HFL decided this was not over yet. The Cougar’s Willison to Stankaitis captured the draw control; the ball went up field where Anna found Lindsay open in the eight, for another score. Lindsay was hot and took a fast break in for yet another Cougar goal. The score was 10-13 and HFL won the draw with less than a minute on the clock, Mandy sailed in a pass to Jill who nailed the shot bringing the score to 11-13. With 40 seconds to play HFL once again got the draw, Lindsay took the ball to the net where she was again rocked by the SWR defense. Possession changed and time ran out, HFL came up short, by only two goals. The Lady Cougars played hard fast and strong, against a tough team. This was only the second team this season where HFL gave up more than 10 goals. (The other was West Genny). Congratulations on a great season Cougars and NYS finalists, silver medalists.

Mandy sailed in the next shot assisted by Lindsay and Lindsay buried another assisted by freshman Maddie Silverman. Maggie got the next draw and took it all the way for the Cougars 7th goal, bringing the score to 7-0 HFL with 15 minutes left in the half. Mandy intercepted the ball in the Nyack 8 meter line and got the ball up field to senior Jill Maier who would not be denied and scored after following her own rebounded shot. Nyack scored their first goal with 12:27 on the clock and followed with goal #2 on an 8-meter call. Senior goalie Emily Stankaitis stopped a point blank shot and cleared to Jill all the way up the field who pounded the shot in. Yes, Emily, the goalie got the assist on that one! Lindsay burried the next shot assisted by Mandy again, then freshman defender Kelsey Hurley intercepted a clear and went in to score her first varsity goal for the Cougars. Jill nailed another assisted by Mandy and then junior attack, Sierra Sarkis scored off the feed from Jill. HFL led 13-2 at the half.
Nyack stepped up after the half and won the first draw, which led to their 3rd goal. HFL’s defense came on strong and regained possession. Defenders, Erin York, Hillary Cox, Ashley Moyer and Kelsey Hurley along with Maggie Wilk, Kristen Mansfield, Molly Fitzsimmons and Allison Kattato kept the Nyack team at bay allowing them very little time with the ball. The HFL offense continued to pound the net. Attacks Nora Stambuagh, Taylor Burgart, Sierra Sarkis, Sage Sarkis, Jessie Leschynski, and Teresa Weissend controlled the ball around the eight. Mandy earned an 8-meter shot and buried it. Maggie added the next goal assisted by Mandy and then Lindsay scored another also assisted by Mandy. On the next draw Mandy knocked the ball away from the Nyack attack and senior defender Erin York picked it and took it all the way up the field where another turnover led to a great tackle save by Emily and a beautiful dodge and weave move by Maddie Silverman. Junior attack Trisha Schunk scored off a Maddie assist when Nyack came back and scored another. Sophomore attack Taylor Burgart scored the last HFL goal on an 8-meter shot. The HFL lady Cougars played for their bus ticket to the NY State lacrosse championships today vs. Amherst (Section VI, Buffalo region). HFL muscled in and retrieved the ball after Amherst won the first draw. Junior middie Anna LeGrett weaved in-between the Amherst defenders and scored the first HFL goal. Senior Jill Maier nailed the next shot assisted by junior attack, Maggie Stankaitis and then another assisted by senior midfielder, Mandy Willison. Amherst answered and took the draw straight in for their 3rd goal of the game. Mandy came on strong again and worked her way into the net for another goal. Amherst answered again but sophomore attack, Taylor Burgart sank a sweet shot assisted by junior attack, Tricia Schunk. Maggie got the next one assisted by freshman middie, Maddie Silverman. Amherst got the last score of the half with 3:33 on the clock after which the HFL’ defense prevented them from shooting. The score at the half was 12-5 HFL.
HFL’s defenders, Hillary Cox, Erin York, Ashley Moyer and Kelsey Hurley along with the middies played defense like a well oiled machine; they doubled the opponent’s transition on every play clearly frustrating them. The Amherst goalie did make a number of nice saves, but the offense only pounded her harder. Maddie, along with Nora, Tricia, Taylor and junior attack Sierra Sarkis moved the ball in the midfield, transitioning the ball beautifully or stealing it back whenever possible. The offense persisted and Jill sailed in a high shot past the goalies helmet, assisted by Lindsay, and then Lindsay ducked in, backtracked and made a left handed bowling shot look easy. Amherst got a breakaway and got one last goal before Mandy drove in, earned and buried the last score of the game.
