JV Lancers Close Out With an 8-4 Victory
The Carlsbad JV Lancers concluded their 2009 campaign with an 8 to 4 victory over Rancho Buena Vista Tuesday afternoon on Lancer Field. The win gave the Lancers their third Palomar League series win, versus 2 series losses, resulted in an 8-7 league record and an overall record of 15-10.
The Lancers got off to a slow start. Ace Carlsbad pitcher Isidro Perez gave up a homer and the defense had 2 errors in the first inning. The Longhorns scored 4 runs on 6 hits in the first 3 frames and Perez had an uncharacteristic high pitch count of 48. But the Lancers turned the tide by limiting RBV to 2 hits for the remainder of the game. Perez need just 31 more pitches to get into the seventh inning and was followed by Matt Thorpe who quickly retired the only two batters he faced. The defense had no more errors and turned in two sterling double plays to thwart rallies.
The offense provided some cushion and confidence to the defense and pitching by scoring 1 in the first and 6 in the second that chased the starting RBV pitcher. The offense also added a late insurance marker in the sixth. Tim Cole led the offensive charge with a 2 for 2 effort, 2 RBI and 2 stolen bases. Drew Perry was 2 for 4 with 2 doubles and 2 RBI. Cole Magro was 2 for 3 with an RBI and Justin Garcia was 2 for 2 with an RBI.
