The Manchaca Optimist Club is the host organization for the New Youth Sports Complex west of the community of Manchaca. The club meets every Wednesday, 7:00 PM at the Clarence Vogel Community Center & Manchaca Fire Hall. Guests and potential members are welcome at the meetings.
The club is affiliated with Optimist International which sponsors clubs all over the United States, plus clubs in Canada, Mexico and Jamaica.
The Manchaca Optimists have many youth oriented activities in addition to the Youth Sports Complex. Scholarship programs are available for Essay and Oratorical contests. Junior World of Golf, Help Them Hear, Respect for Law, Signing Santa and Bicycle Safety are some of the other programs.
Youth Appreciation is held every spring, where several hundred young men and women are invited to the state Capitol House of Representatives chamber floor to receive recognition for their school achievements. Their parents watch from the gallery above the chamber floor.
The Gold Leadership Seminar is held in San Antonio every May. This gathering of outstanding students, selected by their schools, allows them to interface with community leaders and business owners to learn business and communication skills to help them take charge of their future.
You supported our fund raising efforts if you purchased your Christmas Tree at our tree lot in Garrison Park on Manchaca Rd. south of Stassney. Trees will be sold there again this year starting the day after Thanksgiving and a new tree lot will be opened at the Sports Complex this year.
The Optimist Motto is "Friend of Youth".
Visit one of the meetings. The meeting is started with the "Pledge of Allegiance", minutes and financial reports are then read. The business meeting follows. The meeting is interuppted for the meal. You can order anything served at the Community Center. The weekly special is the most popular. The business meeting continues and then the meeting is closed with the Optimist Creed.
Help is always needed. The club appreciates the help of the community in making the new Youth Sports Complex a reality. A lot has been done, but there is much more to be done. Donations of time, money, equipment and your expertise are needed. We look forward to hearing from you. Promise Yourself . . . .
