March 12, 2009 --
Yuma Scorpions Announce Phoenix Tryouts
Team Has Many Roster Spots Open - Searching for Top Collegiate or Minor League Experienced Players
When: Sunday, April 5th 9:00 A.M. - 5:00 P.M.
Where: South Mountain Community College in Phoenix
Cost: $50 pre-register, $75 at tryout
Yuma, Arizona - The Yuma Scorpions announced that they have scheduled a one day player tryout beginning at 9:00 a.m. Sunday, April 5 at South Mountain Community College in Phoenix. The baseball field is located at 7050 S. 24th Street in Phoenix just a few minutes from the Phoenix airport.
The tryout is open to the public and all professional or aspiring-professional ballplayers. Yuma Scorpions Manager and former Major League All-Star Mike Marshall will oversee the tryout, evaluating talent and offering contracts to players that can contribute to the 2009 Scorpions season. The Scorpions open the 2009 season with spring training on May 10th and their opening game on May 21st.
The Yuma Scorpions will be entering their fifth season in the Golden Baseball League (GBL), the premier independent professional minor league in western North America. With ten teams in Arizona, California, Utah, Canada, and Tijuana, Mexcio the GBL is the fastest growing independent league based in the U.S. and the only league with operations in three countries. This year also marks the first GBL alumni to be elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown as outfielder Rickey Henderson played his final professional season with the San Diego Surf Dawgs of the GBL in 2005.
Playing at 10,000 seat Desert Sun Stadium in Yuma and enjoying full use of the Ray Kroc Complex, former spring training home of the San Diego Padres and the Yakult Swallows, the Scorpions have been one of the most successful teams in the GBL in terms of win-loss record, fan attendance, and selling player contracts to major league organzations. Due to the ideal location of being between Phoenix and southern California the Scorpions are heavily scouted by MLB teams and attract talented players from these baseball hotbeds and from around the country and internationally. Due to players being moved to MLB teams and retirements, the Scorpions have more available roster spots to fill than any previous season.
The cost of the tryout is $50 pre-registration and $75 to register the day of the event at the ballpark. Players are required to furnish their own equipment (gloves, bats, cleats, catcher?s gear) and a bag lunch. Interested players should contact Mary Marshall in the Scorpions front office at 928-257-4700 to pre- register. Spots at the tryout are limited, and players are advised to register early to guarantee their spot at the tryout.
