Used Softball Equipment Donations Wanted

PROJECT USED (Used Softball Equipment Donations)

Do you have any softball equipment that you are no longer using? Do you have "lost and found" items that have not been claimed? Don't throw it away... DONATE YOUR USED SOFTBALL EQUIPMENT TO US!

The York County Junior Girls Softball League is participating in a used softball equipment collection campaign in 2005. This is our second year of participation in this project in an effort to help the ISF (International Softball Federation) send used softball equipment and uniforms to underdeveloped countries around the world. The ISF has 124 member nations. These members are the softball federations/associations of different nations all over the world. Many of these national federations/associations such as the United States (Amateur Softball Association - ASA), Softball Canada, the Japanese Softball Association, Softball Australia and the Chinese Softball Association are very large and able to take care of themselves as far as equipment and facilities are concerned. But the majority of ISF's members are still developing the sport in their country to some extent and struggle to either afford or gain access to equipment. Softball is a game that requires a lot of equipment in order to play and many of ISF's member federations/associations need help in getting equipment and uniforms.

The equipment will eventually be sent to the ISF Director of Development in Florida with recognition from the York County Junior Girls Softball League as the donor. However, individual or group contributions to this league project will receive recognition on a special page that is posted on our league web site. Hopefully, during the coming year, this project will grow to the point of receiving much publicity from local newspaper press as it did in 2004.

If you have any used softball equipment or unclaimed "lost and found" items - balls, bats, gloves, helmets, catching gear, equipment bags, umpire gear, and/or uniforms - WE NEED IT! No matter what condition this equipment is in, or how old you might think it is, the ISF can always use it. Please help out some of ISF's member nations with their efforts to play and develop our great game of softball by donating your used softball equipment and uniforms.

Contact Sheree Shermeyer of the Hellam Girls Softball organization, at KKShirt@aol.com to arrange for pick up or delivery of your used softball equipment. If you have any questions or cannot reach Sheree, please contact Dave Trump, the league president, at 717-495-2830 or e-mail ycjgsoftball@aol.com if you have any questions or want to make other arrangements for pick up or delivery of your used softball equipment.

Softball Plans are in Place
The following newspaper article appeared in the June 20, 2004 edition of the York Daily Record newspaper...

Softball plans are in place

Dave Trump is excited.

The president of the York County Junior Girls' Softball League has two projects going on and, with some luck, they both should come together at the same time.

First the Greek Olympic softball team, on a barnstorming pre-Olympic tour, will make a stop in York on July 16. The YCJGSL is helping promote the event and has put together a York County All-Star team to play the Olympians.

The league is also in the middle of a Used Softball Equipment donation project. So far, according to Trump, they've filled a quarter of a tractor trailer with more than 1000 pieces.

We're talking about helmets, bats, balls, gloves, shoes, socks. Even umpires' equipment.

He hopes to get even more. A drop-off at the Greek softball event could put the drive over the top - maybe even fill that tractor trailer.

The donations will be trucked to Florida (the program is under the umbrella of the International Softball Federation headquartered there) and then sent to member countries that need the equipment to promote the sport.

The Federation has 124 member countries, but according to its Web site, the majority need assistance.

"It's a worldwide effort to promote our sport," Trump says.

So the York County league, which has ballooned from three teams when it started back in 1975 to 110 teams this year, has decided to share its wealth.

“I personally went to New Freedom to pick up two carloads myself," Trump said. "200 helmets, 50 bats and 100 softballs."

It's a worthy project, he believes. And he hopes the visit by the Greek team will allow the general public to participate as well.

Meanwhile, that Greek Olympic team, which as it turns out, is primarily comprised of American players of Greek descent, will meet up with some competition when it gets to town.

The league is sponsoring and assembled the local all-star team that will play the Greek team in one of the games that night. It is providing uniforms and, during pre-game ceremonies at 5:30 p.m., will present each member of the Greek team with a white rose, in honor of York – the White Rose City.

The team will be coached by Phil Smith from the Intensity Girls' Fast Pitch Softball organization. Vicky and Jeff Scofield and Trump are assistant coaches. Some of the best local softball players will be members.

It should be a good time. Just ask Trump.

His league is hitting its 30th birthday with 110 teams.

The Greek Olympic team is coming to town.

And the local drive to collect used softball equipment for donation is well under way.

Maybe he can fill a tractor trailer.

He's excited.
