Concussion Training Mandated by State Law for ALL COACHES AND UMPIRES

Ohio law mandates that all coaches, assistant coaches, and referees to obtain specialized training in recognizing the symptoms of concussions and head injuries every three years. 

Bethel Diamond Sports, Inc. requires every baseball and softball coach, assistant coach, and umpire to successfuly complete the free online concussion training prior the first game.  The training will take less than 30 minutes and will require that you print a certificate of completion at the conclusion of the video. 

Heads Up: Concussion in Youth Sports is a free, online course available to coaches, parents, and others helping to keep athletes safe from concussion. It features interviews with leading experts, dynamic graphics and interactive exercises, and compelling storytelling to help you recognize a concussion and know how to respond if you think that your athlete might have a concussion. Once you complete the training and quiz, you must print out the certificate, and provide a copy to your district rep.  Baseball: Brad Shepherd. Softball: Chad Bohl.

Removal from Play and Return to Play After a Concussion

1) Coaches, referees, or officials must remove an athlete exhibiting the signs and symptoms of a concussion during practice or a game.

2) The athlete cannot return to play on the same day that he or she is removed.

3) The athlete is not permitted to return to play until they have been assessed and receive written clearance by a physician.
