808 Volleyball Club - who, what & where are we?
December 1, 2005  --   The 808 Volleyball Club Philosophy of Coaching is to focus on:
FUN, FUNDAMENTALS, LEADERSHIP, LIFE SKILLS, COMMUNICATION, TEAMWORK, ATTITUDE, DEDICATION, GROUP DYNAMICS, & SPORTMANSHIP.

We believe in STUDENT-PLAYERS FIRST, and WINNING SECOND - WINNING will be a byproduct of our success at teaching the above elements of Volleyball. In following this recipe for success, the result is skilled athletes that are also well-rounded student-athlete-leaders in their families, communities, schools, and organizations that love the game well into adulthood.

The 808 Volleyball Club is a Jr. Girls, Jr. Boys, & Adults Competitive Volleyball Club based on the Windward Side of O'ahu. A majority of our coaches, administrators and adult players live in Waimanalo, and have coached all over the island for OIA teams: Kailua, Kalaheo, Wai'anae, Campbell, and McKinley and award winning P.A.L. teams in Waimanalo. These coaches have over 30 years of playing/coaching experience combined, and have played at McKinley, Wai'anae, Kamehameha, and Baldwin (Maui) and some have been recruited to play at the collegiate level in DI & DII schools such as BYUHawaii, CalState-San Jose, while others have won recognition at the local Haili Tournament in the B Womens, B Mens, and A Mens, and then at the Adult National Tournament as well.

What is Club volleyball?
1st: Is it more recognized than P.A.L.?
YES!!! It is governed by USA Volleyball, the National "pipeline" to competitive high school, collegiate, and professional play. However, it will NOT guarantee that your child plays volleyball in college, but minimally, if you are considering college volleyball as an option, it will heighten your child's chances of being exposed to the larger volleyball community in the State and the Continent, and gain them more opportunities to play at the college level, it that is what they choose.

2nd: Do they travel?
YES!!! Like any other sport, the major tournaments are held annually in the Continent, some with over 800 teams and 100's of college scouts attending. The reason for travel is to give the players a higher level of competition and experience, making them more aggressive for highschool competition locally, possibly helping them to gain local recognition as a high school athlete, as well as allow them to be seen early by college scouts (some are scouted as early as Freshman year of highschool and followed to Senior year).

3rd: Will it interfere with my child's school activities?
Not really. As a college preparatory program, 808 VBC believes that while a student is in high school, they should focus on academics BEFORE athleticism. Without the grades, they may never be able to compete in the collegiate level...therefore, we conduct routine and random mandatory grade checks and would like to see our athletes achieving a 2.5 gpa minimally. This plays a key role when being scouted for college opportunities. Also, as a college prep academic counselor, our Director supports all of our highschool participants towards readiness for the college level of play through mandatory advising sessions that walk our players through everything from course selection, college review, taping for recruiting, SAT prep, career planning, to the final college selection.

Also, other school activities such as sports and clubs are encouraged, as long as the player doesn't miss or be late excessively to practices. We only practice 2 - 3X's a week, and as this is a team sport, the team should get the most practice TOGETHER.

4th: What is the cost?
As a college prep club, with access to the many resources that will help our participants exceed in the volleyball world towards collegiate level, we are an average club regarding cost. While most of the elite clubs cost approximately $1100 - $1500 to start, our fees for the 2007 season are $10 per tryout, $650 to join (add an additional $50 if after December) which include full outfit for travel and competition (bag, warmups, shorts, jerseys), registration, gym rentals, coaching fees for certification and registration, fundraising starter and tournament fees. Traveling fees are always separate. However, we also stress fundraising and with team spirit and dedication, the team can potentially fundraise the entire cost of the Haili Trip or half of the continental trip. That is up to the individual player, family, and teams.

As a philosophy, we believe strongly in dedication to teaching and learning fundamentals, fun, communication, teamwork that will produce strong, healthy, and leaderly young men and women in the next generation. If we do our job in the above areas, winning will be a bi-product of those combined efforts.

Our practices are approximately 2 1/2 to 3 hours long, 2 - 3 X's a week, once in a Windward Venue(i.e., Waimanalo Gym, Olomana, Gym, Kalaheo H.S. Gym) and once in a town Venue (i.e., Palama Settlement Gym). Games are normally hosted in town at Farrington H.S. or McKinley H.S. Once a player committs, they are committing to the team that they are on to make scheduled practices and games.

Gym practices will be for ball handling clinics/practices that focus on footwork, agility, and ball control. Aerobic and Cardio warmups, endurance, and cooldowns will be integrated with these practices, but additional Aerobic and Cardio will be suggested to players as needed on off days.

In addition, our club administrators strongly believe in preparation for the next level (in college), so as part of our club, all Jr. Players enrolled with us will be eligible to recieve additional college prep counseling: small group instruction on NCAA preparedness and application, registration checks to make sure you have all the credits you need to play at your desired level, college prep SAT's, statement, resume, and application processing, Financial Aid application processing, and college scouting, selection, introduction letters, and taping.
