2009 Varsity Football

Lou Farrar, Head Coach

Coach Farrar will be starting his 42nd year in football and 41st season of coaching. Yes, a long career, yet one that won’t be over for awhile. Coach Farrar is looking forward to the start of this season in particular because now he can focus all of his time on his family and football. In 2007, Coach Farrar retired from teaching after 37 years as an AP Psychology teacher. He attended Charter Oak High School in the early 60’s where he played football, basketball, golf and track. He went on to play at the University of California at Berkeley. His high school coach was the NFL’s Jim Hanifan, an NFL head coach and one of the league’s most honored Offensive line coaches. Both Lou and Jim are now retired and look forward to many continued years of friendship. Coach Farrar has coached a variety of sports on multiple levels. His successful career began as a scout for Charter Oak in 1967 and then as a freshman football coach at Damien in 1968.

Throughout the 1970’s and 1980’s Coach Farrar taught Family Living and Psychology at Royal Oak High School and was at one time or another the Head Football Coach, Head Wrestling Coach, Head Varsity Baseball Coach, and Head Girl’s Varsity Basketball Coach. He also coached at Chaffey College in the mid 1970’s as a Defensive Coordinator. Coach Lou has an outstanding overall game record with 227 wins, 96 losses and 7 ties, and going into the 2009 season, his COHS game record is at 189-89-7.

Coach Lou has been a member of the Southern California’s Interscholastic Football Coach’s Association for many
years, serving on its Board of Directors and Treasurer. Coach Farrar was the Athletic Director for many years as Charter Oak when Royal Oak and Charter Oak combined campuses. Coach Farrar is known throughout the state and across the country as an active proponent of high school athletics. Moreover, he has contributed a great deal to the Charter Oak community and has developed many young men into outstanding football players and outstanding citizens of our community. Many sons of former players are now and have been playing for Big Lou for many seasons. Coach Farrar is especially proud of Super Bowl XLI Champion Jason David, who also comes back every year to work with the kids in our community.
Big Lou earned his first CIF Championship in 1985 at Mt. Sac. Stadium defeating a very good Diamond Bar High School. The second came in 1998 as Charter Oak defeated Harvard-Westlake. In 2001 Charter Oak had to defeat Los Altos at Mt. Sac. to capture the third title. And his most recent and fourth CIF Championship came last year in 2008 with a win against Diamond Ranch. His accomplishments include C.I.F. Div 2A Coach of the Year in 1985, 1998 and 2001. Also, the Los Angeles Times All San Gabriel Valley Coach of the Year in 1987 and 1998. More recently he was honored by the All-American Football Foundation as President Gerald Ford’s All American High School Coach in March 2004. Just this past season the San Gabriel Valley Tribune honored Coach Farrar as its’ Coach of the Year for 2006 as he went over the “200 WINS” mark. In 2007 Coach Lou was the recipient of the Golden Heritage Award.

Coach Farrar personifies all that Charger football is, ever was, and ever will be: PRIDE, INTEGRITY, TRADITION,
DEDICATION, COMMITMENT, and the list goes on and on. Beneath his tough and intimidating appearance, hides a compassionate man who truly cares about his “family”. Coach Farrar now happily says that he has all the time in the world to devote to his favorite areas; his family, his grandkids and football. Coach Farrar takes pride in the numerous accomplishments of his charming wife Nancy, a C.O. graduate and former Family Therapist on the C.O. campus; his son Dominic, C.O.’s Assistant Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator; his daughter-in-law Adriana and grandsons Louis and Vincent. Coach Farrar and his wife are very happy to have their daughter Natalie and her husband Stacy return from New York City with their two sons, Donovan and Maguire.

He wants to thank his wife and family for their continued love and support, his learners and athletes for their friendship and commitment towards achieving their goals and dreams.
