Frequently Asked Questions
How many girls make the team?
Up to 22.
When are tryouts?
Tryouts are held in the spring. If additional positions on the team are available after tryouts, candidates may submit videotaped entries until August 1. There will be NO walk-on tryouts in the fall after Pre-Season and Camp, with the exception of experienced cheerleaders with extraordinary circumstances as to why they could not participate in pre-season training.
Is the team All-Girl or Coed?
Due to limited (or no) interest from males at Lafayette, we've been an All-Girl squad for the past few years. HOWEVER... we would LOVE to work with some athletic men who would like to be part of our team! If you are a current student or an incoming freshmen or transfer student, and you're male, athletic, and enjoy lifting - PLEASE contact the coach prior to August 1, 2008 to arrange a tryout. Contact info is found above. All of the tryout information (requirements, etc.) found on this page and in the packet is for female candidates. Interested males will have a separate tryout!
And hey... no one is making fun of THIS guy!

What are the "requirements" to try-out/make the team?
Academically, returning students must be in good standing in order to try out. All cheerleaders must maintain good academic standing throughout the season in order to be eligible to cheer.
Physically, the ability to learn & perform 2 sideline chants, a fast-paced dance routine, and a band dance; and jumps (toe-touch, pike, front and side hurdlers, and a combination jump) is required to try out. We're looking for clean & sharp motions, with proper technique and placement. We also evaluate expression, voice, smile, etc.
Tumbling: A minimum of a standing backhandpspring is required to make the team. If you do not have a backhandpsring, but have outstanding stunting skills, you may still try out. At tryouts or on your submitted tape, we'd like to see a standing handspring, standing tuck, round-off handspring or tuck and one additional pass.
Stunting: At tryouts or on your video we would like to see at least two elite level stunting skills. We look for bases to show proper technique, basing with their legs and catching high to absorb the cradle. We like to see flyers demonstrate their flexibility and twisting ability.
**If you do not have any stunting ability, but can demonstrate a minimum of a roundoff backhandspring full twist layout you may also tryout as a tumbler on the team**

Does the team practice over the summer? What is Pre-Season?
The Lafayette Cheerleaders return to campus on Thursday, August 14 (a full week before freshmen move in/orientation). This is a "work week" for pre-season practice. Our team follows a schedule which includes triple practice sessions, conditioning, and fun team activites. During pre-season week, you'll learn all of the game material (cheers, sideline chants, dances, band dances, stunts & pyramids) for the season. This year, we are hosting a UCA private college camp at the end of pre-season week, allowing our entire team to work with UCA instructors on advanced stunts.

| |
Does Lafayette offer cheerleading scholarships?
No.
| |
Do the cheerleaders travel with the football team?
Yes. We travel to home and away football games, including championship and post-season games. We also travel for basketball - to Lehigh, and for post-season tournament games.
|
Does the school and/or the athletic department support the cheerleading team?
Yes. Cheerleading is an athletic activity and is supported by the athletic department. We have a paid coach (as opposed to an advisor) who is safety certified. We receive services from sports medicine and the strength coach. We practice in the Kirby Sports Center.
The athletic department/Maroon Club - Friends of Cheerleading provides travel to football games as well as some meals for the cheerleaders. Uniforms, warm-ups, megaphones, poms, and laundry service are also provided by the athletic department.
| |
How much does it cost to participate in cheerleading?
Cheerleaders are (only) responsible for the cost of camp and camp/practice clothing, as well as their uniform accessories such as bloomers, socks, ribbons, and sneakers. This is paid for in full when you make the team, and there are no additional fees during the season. All items that you purchase are yours to keep. Items provided by the school are the property of the athletic department and must be returned at the end of the season.
|
How much time is involved? Is there a schedule available?
Cheerleading at Lafayette requires dedication and the ability to manage your time so that you can excel academically, perform at practices and games, and still maintain a social life.
Cheerleading at Lafayette is almost year-round. We begin with tryouts in the spring, begin practicing in August, and cheer for football through November. Basketball season overlaps with football season and continues through March.
|
Are practices and games mandatory?
Yes - and should only be missed for TRUE emergencies.
Practice usually takes place 3-4 times per week from 4 - 6 PM... cheer practice should NEVER conflict with a scheduled class.
Friday nights during football season are for pre-game practice and activities during game weeks. Football games are held on Saturdays.
During basketball season, games are held during the week and on weekends. We practice before games and during the week, if necessary.
|
Are the practice and game facilities nice?
Very. We practice in the gym (where our basketball games are also held), in the auxiliary gym - Kamine Gymnasium, or in one of the mirrored dance rooms in Kirby Sports Center. Our football games are played on Fisher Field at Fisher Stadium which has recently undergone a $23 million renovation!
