    Freshman Cheer
    Freshman Cheer Team prepares our athletes for higher levels of sideline performance and competition. At the freshman level, we want to emphasize the proper technique in all aspects of cheerleading: motions, faces, voice, jumps, skills, tumbling, and stunting. Our freshman team is taught not just do skills but taught to do them RIGHT. Freshman cheerleading is about learning the basics and setting the foundation for a fabulous and fun cheerleading career.

    Freshman cheer is about preparation, laying the foundation, and falling in love with cheerleading.

    Freshman Team Requirements:
    Positive Attitude
    Ability to think about the Team, not only yourself
    No “I can’t”s; no negative talk of any kind
    Must be able to believe in yourself and your abilities
    Exceptional Work Ethic
    An unending desire to learn every aspect of cheerleading
    Actively working on learning new skills.
    Dedication
    The ability and willingness to give Cheer the time it demands.
    Learning Ability
    The ability to learn all of the different aspects of cheerleading including motions, faces, voices, jumps,
    flexibility skills, stunting, and tumbling.

    A Freshman Cheerleader should possess most if not all of the following skills:
    Coordination & Body Awareness.
    Reasonable hamstring and back flexibility.
    Stength in line with basic stunting and tumbling skills

    HHS Freshman Team Goals

    I. Game Material
    a. Precision
    i. Emphasis should be on correcting individual form errors (arm motions) by the end of the football season.
    ii. Stress group coordination and tightness
    iii. Use precision drills, mirrors, buddies
    iv. Use chants used at camp
    b. Jumps
    i. Emphasize (Toetouch, Rt. Herkie, Pike, and Rt. Hurdler)
    ii. Practice jumps daily (as a group and individually)
    iii. Condition – Sprints, plyo’s, etc.
    iv. Timing of prep and ending should be perfected
    c. Stunts
    i. Beginning level stunts should be reviewed and perfected before advancing to more difficult stunts.
    ii. The athletes must have knowledge of spotting requirements
    iii. Incorporate stunts into crowdlines to make them more exciting to watch.
    iv. Be creative and use variations of beginning level stunts
    v. Dismounts: Step off, straight arch cradle, twist, d. twist
    vi. Extensions required, move to braced one leg extensions and extended one leg stunts, near end of competitive season.
    d. Tumbling
    i. Teach in progressions from rolls to runs
    ii. Incorporate tumbling into cheers and crowdlines
    iii. Have cheerleaders tumble after exciting plays or touchdowns
    iv. Team Goal: BWO’s and work toward BHSP’s – practice skills everyday
    e. Crowd response, facial and voice
    i. Facial and full voice practiced during all chant and cheer reviews so that it becomes automatic
    ii. Spontaneous and genuine enthusiasm emphasized
    iii. Most material should include crowd response
    f. Creativity
    i. Make cheers and chants visual and clean
    ii. Change material weekly (change a jump, add a stunt)
    iii. Give cheerleaders a chance to create material
    g. Competitive Cheer
    i. Freshman level will compete between 10-12 times
    ii. Coaches make up material
    iii. Make material challenging for the athletes
    iv. Emphasize teamwork and goal setting
    v. Stunt cheer difficulty – shoot for a 20
    vi. Stunt cheer variety – 15
    vii. Good Sportsmanship
    h. Team Unity
    i. Buddies
    ii. Team Goals
    iii. Positive Circles
    iv. Closure to practice
    v. After practice get togethers, tail gators, team bonding, etc..
