A year after going winless in the same tournament, the 8U Mavericks returned to Long Hill and finished second in the Twisters Tournament. The girls took a 4-0 record into the championship game as the top seed but fell to Mt. Olive in a hard fought championship game. It was such a rewarding sight to see how these girls have improved and gelled as a team, playing with confidence and pride as they realized how good they can be.
In Saturday's first game, an early lead was held throughout the game, surviving a last inning push by Long Hill to win 10-9. Game 2 against Cranford was close the entire game and, after going down early, they took the lead mid-way through the match and held on 8-5. In the final match of the day the girls were hot & tired, causing them to fall behind early. Their second wind hit about the 4th inning as they mounted a comeback to shock Mt. Olive 13-9.
Both teams played like champions in the finals but Mt. Olive prevailed 23-13. The Mavericks got off to a slow start falling behind in the first two innings 11-0. However, the girls never lost their drive and battled back to make it a game by the fourth inning. A late surge from the Marauders kept the game out of reach but the girls finished with their heads up and played hard to the end.
The girls are proud of their achievement, but not nearly as proud as the coaching staff! Congratulations Girls.. what an impressive performance and we all could not be more proud! It was a great weekend of softball!!!!
