"He never stops coming at you"
Simmons brings aggressive style to Northeast boys soccer defense

by Brian Burden
bburden1721@hotmail.com

Northeast High School senior sweeper Kyle Simmons has been an all-county defender the past two seasons, combining his keen field awareness with a relentless aggressive pursuit of the ball to stabilize the Eagles’ defensive third. His intense focus and perseverance are a direct tribute to his mother Theresa’s countless hours of devotion to her son’s craft.

Paul Meyers, Northeast’s third-year coach, spent five seasons as an assistant at Archbishop Spalding and he says that Simmons compares favorably to T.J. Nairn, an all-county and all-MIAA selection who went on to letter four years at Salisbury University. "He is without a doubt the most aggressive player I have ever coached," Meyers said. "He is a smart player with a great knack for moving forward. He is one of those kids that is so competitive and cannot stand losing."

The Eagles (2-4) host Southern (2-4) at 5 p.m. Wednesday in an Anne Arundel County game.

Simmons has come straight through the Northeast feeder system, starting at St. Jane when he was four-years-old, switching to the Pasadena Heat when he was 11, a team that eventually merged with a Severna Park squad, a club he still plays with today. They compete in the National Capital Soccer League and he has performed well in games against some of the area’s top talent. Playing for the Eagles posts a different set of challenges, as Northeast annually struggles to compete with the county’s top-tier teams. Simmons has been with varsity since playoffs his freshman year and has rarely come off the field since the first game of his sophomore year. "I remember playing Severna Park and I was marking Mike Rose (Notre Dame) and we took them to overtime before losing, 1-0," Simmons said"It was at that point that I knew I could play with some of the better strikers in the area."

Over the past two seasons, Simmons has perfected his system of marking top opposing attackers and then sparking a Northeast counter-attack from his sweeper position. His speed and ball skills allow him to routinely make funs of 20-30 yards before finding midfielders on the wings or sending a through pass that frees up his own attackers. Meyers notes that Simmons never has his head down on the field and thus always recognizes where his teammates are at any given time. "Kyle is someone that we game planned for coming into our game with Northeast," Old Mill coach Jeff Martin said after his team’s 2-1 victory over the Eagles earlier this month. "He is someone that you always need to account for because he never stops coming at you."

On a team that has struggled to start the season, Simmons is doing his best to serve as captain and leader of a squad that has potential, but is short on depth and experience. "I am working so hard to keep this team focused and understand the pace of the game at the varsity level," Simmons said after his team’s 3-1 loss to Chesapeake last week. "With all that we lost from last year, it is so important that the sophomores and juniors understand what it takes to compete and win." Meyers rarely gets to see his players outside of games and practices, but notices that when he sees Simmons at other Northeast athletic contests, he is consistently surrounded by underclassmen. "He has his senior friends, but it is quite obvious that the younger guys look up to him and understand how successful he is both on and off the field," Meyers said.

The soccer field is not the only arena Simmons has conquered. Ranked 17th in his senior class, Simmons sports a nifty 3.92 GPA and is considering UMBC for engineering and Towson or Salisbury for their athletic training programs. In a true exhibition of Simmons’ resolve, he registered a four on the calculus AP test after struggling in the class throughout the year. "That is just a tribute to how competitive he is,” Meyers said. “He does the best he can at everything he does."

Simmons’ number one fan is easily his mother. Divorced when Kyle was six, Theresa has stood firm over him and his two older brothers and ensured their athletic and academic success. "I see how strong she is and how she never backs down from anyone and she is just a calm influence," said Simmons, who stole the ball near midfield, dribbled up the field and assisted on a Rob Engel goal in Northeast's 2-1 win at South River on Monday. "She excels under pressure and I know that I want to do right and support my family when I am older and she has been the best role model and my biggest supporter in everything that I do."

For Meyers, Simmons epitomizes the kind of player he wants to see come through Pasadena on a more regular basis. "He is a very level-headed guy, quite business-like in demeanor, and it is because he knows what he wants to do and where he wants to go," Meyers said. "He has applied all of these strong traits to the classroom and the field."

Northeast nips South River in overtime, 2-1
Engel, Gonzalez hook up for game-winner with 55 seconds left in first extra period of boys soccer bout

by Aaron Gray
agray@digitalsports.com

Sophomore forward Rob Engel scored in the first half and then assisted the game-winning goal with 55 seconds left in the first overtime period to lift the Northeast High School boys soccer team to a 2-1 win at South River in an Anne Arundel County game Monday. The Eagles improved to 2-4 overall, 2-4 in the county. The Seahawks fell to 2-5, 2-3. "It was a pretty big win for the guys," Northeast coach Paul Meyers said. "To hold on in regulation and pull it out in overtime is a big deal and we want to build on this win. We're starting to come together and possess the ball a little more."

Junior midfielder Alex Gonzalez hit the game-winner for Northeast. Engel scored in the first half for the Eagles, when senior sweeper Kyle Simmons gained possession at midfield and made a run down the right flank. He sent a low ball into the box that Gonzalez finished to give Northeast a 1-0 lead. "We encourage Kyle to make some runs but he's the man in the back so we want him to stay at home too," Meyers said. "When he has space, he's smart enough to see it and take advantage of it."

Senior goalkeeper Glenn Groh registered seven saves for the Eagles while his counterpart, Jacob Smith, tallied six.

9/11 - Pats beat Eagles on Questionable Call
Thu Sep 11, 2008 - Old Mill 2, Northeast 1

From the Maryland Gazette:

Furrs picks up Old Mill slack
Senior's two goals lead Patriots over Northeast
by AVI CREDITOR, Staff Writer

With top scorer Sean Perdomo sidelined with an undisclosed injury, the Old Mill boys soccer team is in need of someone to pick up the scoring load. Enter Jonathan Furrs. The senior midfielder scored twice Thursday night, including the tie-breaking goal in the 52nd minute, to lift the Patriots to a 2-1 victory at Northeast.

"When Sean leaves, that's a huge hole," Furrs said. "He's so phenominal. The rest of us have to really step up our game to accommodate for him not being on the field." Furrs did just that, tapping home a deflected, close-range shot by junior forward Brandon Park 12 minutes into the second half. Park's ball looked to be on the way to crossing the goal line, but Furrs made sure to get the Patriots (1-1) on the board. "It was spinning, and I figured that if it was going to continue spinning the way it was, it would definitely stop," Furrs said. "I decided to put the ball away while I had the chance."

Furrs appeared to have been in an offside position when he connected for the go-ahead score, as he was behind both Park and the defender when Park attempted his shot, but no call made. "I thought he was offsides," said Northeast coach Paul Myers. "He had to have been because where he was standing he was right on the (goal) line. ... He was not behind the ball, so, therefore, we thought he was offsides. I didn't think (the referee) was in good position to see it because it looked like he was not on the endline. He was at about the 7- or 8-yard line, but those things go. If we punched the ball in when we should have, then it's a different game."

The play Myers referred to came prior to the Eagles' fourth-minute goal, when senior midfielder Gavin Edmiston's lobbing header was snatched by Old Mill sophomore keeper Randy Depfer just before it could cross the line. Northeast (0-2) got on the board less than a minute later when senior defender Chris Biederman's free kick from the right sideline at midfield took a fortuitous bounce toward junior midfielder Alex Gonzalez. The ball bounced over the Old Mill defense right to Gonzalez's right foot, about five yards from the goal, and he struck it into the back of the net for the game's first tally. "I absolutely love it," Myers said. "He went to the ball and beat his man, and that's what he can do. He was the first to that ball, and that's what it takes."

The Eagles outshot the Patriots in the first half, 8-3, and had more scoring opportunities over the first 40 minutes. "You're not going to beat a lot of teams if you're putting your goalkeeper under that much pressure early in the game," said Old Mill coach Jeff Martin. "We've got to clean it up in the back with the 50-50s and the head balls."

The Patriots tied the game 12 minutes after Gonzalez's score when Furrs headed home junior defencer Perry Clark's free kick from the center circle in the 16th minute. Furrs beat Northeast senior keeper Glen Groh to the ball at around the eight-yard mark and got solid contact to the ball with his forehead to leave no doubt. "I just focused in on the ball," Furrs said. "We've been working on our free-kick game. Regardless of if the keeper was coming out or not, I was going to put a head on it."

Perdomo, who scored Old Mill's only goal in sparse minutes in a 2-1 loss to South River last Friday, was not healthy enough to play last night, Martin said. "He's banged up, and he's not fit yet," Martin said. "We've got to get him healthy and in shape, and we'll go from there." With the All-County forward sidelined, it's up to players like Furrs to keep the Patriots afloat. "John put himself in position two times tonight to score," Martin said. "Friday night, he didn't do that, and we got on him a bit this week. Outside midfield is a dirty job. You've got to reward yourself by getting the goal and finishing those opportunities."

NOTES: Northeast graduate and 2007 All-County midfielder Justin Wolf scored his first collegiate goal Saturday, playing for North Carolina Wesleyan in a 2-0 win over Marymount.

Old Mill (1-1) 1 1 - 2
Northeast (0-2) 1 0 - 1

Glen Burnie boys come from behind to defeat Northeast, 3-1

Tony Hernandez scored two goals to lead the Glen Burnie boys soccer team to a come-from-behind, 3-1 victory over Northeast Wednesday night. After Kyle Simmons put Northeast ahead early in the first half, Hernandez struck back with a goal in the 34th minute before finding the back of the net once more before the half’s close. 2008 Northeast Soccer Previews
From the Maryland Gazette:

RETURNING PLAYERS: Chris Biederman (Sr., D); Tyler Briemann (Sr., M); Ryan Bromwell (Sr., D); Gavin Edmiston (Sr., M); Glen Groh (Sr., GK); Matt Houck (Sr., GK); Zoltan Kimble (Sr., M); Josh Merrill (Sr., M); Ryan Riopelle (Sr., F); Kyle Simmons (Sr., M/D); Alex Gonzalez (Jr., M/F); Kenny Witt (Jr., D)

NEWCOMERS: Greg Jordan (Jr., F); Brandon Nestor (Jr., D); George Stumpf (Jr., D); Robert Engel (So., M/F); Cody Koester (So., D/GK); Josh Meekins (So., M/GK)

OUTLOOK: The Eagles will try to improve on last season's record while filling the void left by All-County midfielder Justin Wolf, who graduated. One of those players is Kyle Simmons, a two-time, second-team Coaches All-County defender who will log some minutes in the midfield. A scoring boost could come from Greg Jordan, JV's leading scorer last season. His 6-foot-3-inch frame will be crucial on balls crossed into the box. "I'm hoping that with his height hel'll be able to get the high balls that come in and that can finish on the varsity level like he did on JV," Myers said. With seven returning starters, the Eagles may sneak up on some teams this season.

From digitalsports.com (complete article):

Paul Myers has 10 returning seniors to his Eagles squad, including shutdown defender Kyle Simmons, but it could be a first-year player that determines the Eagles’ fate. "I am hoping that our fitness level will help us compete," Meyers said. "We have a lot of seniors returning and Kyle (Simmons) has been an all-county performer his entire varsity career."

Junior Greg Jordan, the team’s leading scorer on the junior varsity, and fellow junior Alex Gonzalez, will look to heighten Northeast’s offensive threat. Meyers plans to move Simmons around to take advantage of his skills and senior Josh Merrill will generate action from the midfield. Senior Glenn Groh returns in goal, but is getting pushed by sophomore Josh Meekins.
