SONICS FALL vs RAF BRIZE NORTON
Thur 19 Nov 2009
RAF BRIZE NORTON
7.00 PM
RAF BRIZE NORTON 74 vs OXHOOPS SONICS 56
It is clear that SONICS are not the powerhouse they were last season, they have made an investment in the future by adding younger players offering them a better playing experience. In fact the game yesterday was a clear example of this as 3 of the youngsters started the game and all of them had plenty of court time.
SONICS are struggling with health issues, with David Emsden, Amir Boucenna and Josh Mortimer out with injuries, Patrice Mulowaye's minutes have been restricted due to back spasms as well as Louis Burford's minutes been reduced due to work commitments. Amazingly, spirit in the camp are running fairly high as they all look forward to the return of the full squad, in the mean time SONICS are not doing a bad job, losing to Stealers by 4 pts and holding RAF to under 75 pts. Better still the team only had 12 Turn Overs in the whole game and showed a lot of patience offensively as well as intensity on D. Having said that, SONICS did not show up to play in the 1st half ... Coach, you must do something about this!
"We have plenty of time to return to winning ways, we are going through some hard times, but it has shown us that we have a lot of depth in the team, some of the players have been given opportunities that usually would not be offered. As long as we continue to progress and show improvement I'll be happy." Head Coach Marulanda
A bit of good news is that veteran HOOPS player Jody Rodgers, who have been nursing a wrist and ankle injury received almost 2 seasons ago vs Wallingford has just signed up and should be suited up to play next week. Another great bit of news is the return of star player Eugene Brown early December 2009. Eugene holds the record for most points scored in a game with 73 vs Witney Houstons, amazingly he'll be playing against them again this year!
Changes are in the horizon, let's just hope these are positive changes.

OXHOOPS SONICS vs Oxford Stealers
SONICS' starting 5:
#4 David Emsden; #8 James Edwards; #9 David Smith; #13 Sam Dunbar & #14 Preye Ozeke.
When the Stealers turn up, usually there will be a good show and this time was no different. SONICS won the tip and hit the first shot off a pick and roll to the base thanks to David Smith. Stealers quickly answered with a lay up from Mike Porter and 2 FTs from Omar Boutayeb. SONICS got another shot from down town from Captain James Edwards, but Stealers' Adam Hayle answered with 5 points. This continued throughout the first quarter to leave Stealers up 20-16. SONICS' David Emsden was pulled off the game not to return due to back strain.
The second quarter started as furiously as the first with SONICS outscoring Stealers 10-6 to equalize the game on 26 pts all. Then Stealers scored 12 unanswered points to end the first half 40-28
AT THE HALF:
SONICS - #8 James Edwards 12Pts
STEALERS - #5 Adam hayle 14Pts
During the third quarter SONICS knew they had to increase the defensive pressure and reduce the margin, Stealers experience will resist this at all costs, but SONICS perseverance paid off as the quarter ended 50-58 to Stealers. During the forth quarter SONICS managed to get within 2 pts at the 9th minute and then within 1 point after a time out play resulted with a long 3-pt shot from Louis Burford to make the scores 78-79 with 22 seconds left to play. SONICS pressured the ball and forced a turnover, but missed turn the ball over themselves. Subsequently an intentional foul was called and Stealers took advantage of it to win 82-78. A great game and the first time Stealers beat SONICS at St. Gregs in 3 seasons.

OXHOOPS SONICS vs THAME TIGERS
The SONICS started their campaign against a team that on paper should give them a run for their money, but it transpired that Thame were missing 3 important players from last season, there was Damien Hughes (SG), Pav (PF) and Alex (PF)and of course multi-talented Will who became together with Steve Dutton (C) their main scoring threats.
SONICS on the other hand were missing "Big Pre", Preye Ozeke (PF), Desta Rudder-Smith(G/F), Tenzin Dakar(PG) and Nilton Li(G) in their roster, but they have added some great up and coming players with Josh Mortimer(F), Sam Dunbar(F), Elliott Poore(G/F) and Mason Poore(G) as well as NBL Ex-Braves veteran Ayo Toye(PF) and Amir Boucenna(PG) who has been playing in Spain for the last 2 seasons.
SONICS starting 5: #4 David Emsden & #10 Patrice Mulowaye at Forwards, #5 Louis Burford & #8 James Edwards at Guard and #7 Amir Boucenna at Point. SONICS won the tip and made the first shot within seconds, their D was tough and consistent throughout, denying Thame the ball and offering them difficult shots, in fact Thame's first basket came on the 10th minute from a free throw by #14 C. Skidmore. At the end of the first quarter teh score was 26-4 Sonics.
The 2nd Quarter saw action from the younger SONICS, who were outscored by Thame 8 to 5, as substitutions were made and the balanced tipped in SONICS favour once again Thame finished the half trailing 52-22, a great comeback with contribution from all Tigers.
The game continued very much in the same fashion with SONICS outscoring Thame in every quarter and adding great pressure defensively. Final Score 101-49 to Sonics who secured their first win in teh 2009-10 Season.
Game MVPs:
#7 Amir Boucenna (18 Pts, 7 Rebs, 10 Stls, 10 Assts, 3 Defl & 5 Turnovers
