2006-07 Cross Country, Powerlifting & Track Results
2006-07 Cross Country
SEASON PREVIEW
Fulton County Schools will again be offering Cross Country this Fall for the 2006 Season. Coach Spadafino will be expanding the program this year and begin offering opportunities for more students to participate and at a variety of age and ability levels. Starting at the top, the Varsity Program will consist of all 11th & 12th grade students, as well as any runners in grades 7-10 who are in the top 10 and choose to run Varsity. Next, athletes in the 7th - 10th grades will have the opportunity to participate in JV & Freshman races when offered throughout the season. Additionally, participants in 7th & 8th grade will have Middle School Races available to them at many of the meets.
Last year the focus was on developing distance runners for track, working on pre-season conditioning for basketball, and helping students get in shape or lose weight by becoming physically active. While these are all positive outcomes from participating in Cross Country, and are still the goals of many runners, the program plans to establish itself more as a Team by focusing on improving times and being competitive in the Region.
This fall the Fulton County Cross Country program begins its second season competing at the varsity level after last year’s fairly successful first season. With the loss of their #2 runner Felix Wartemann to graduation, the Pilot harriers plan on taking their training to the next level with the implementation of more speed work and weight training to become a more competitive team this season within the first region.
Three upper classmen are returning for the Pilots this season to lead the way with their newfound experience. Tony Udley, a junior, will again try and split time between football and cross country to qualify for the State Meet at the Horse Park in Lexington. Tony was the top runner last season for the Pilots but missed the regional meet due to a football injury from the Crittenden County playoff game the night before. Another junior, Lance Mudd, is back after holding down the number three spot on the team last cross country season and making an appearance at the State Track Meet on the 4x400m Relay team with Udley back in June. The third veteran is John Wilson, another junior, who was the number four runner last season.
New to the team are sophomores Chris Foederer, Garrett Kelly, Tyler Vowell and Ben Wyland freshmen Sean Edgin, Matthew Whitt, and Emil Bandurowicz. Foederer and Vowell played baseball for the Pilots and along with Kelly are naturally athletic. Edgin and Bandurowicz played football and basketball in middle school and this will be Whitt's first year in athletics. With both Veterans and Rookies involved, the pilots will make Individual Improvements their primary focus and let the team rankings fall into place.

2006 SEASON IN REVIEW
The Fulton County Boys Cross Country runners closed out their season with strong performances in the Graves Co. Eagle Twilight Classic and Region 1 Class A Championships to finish their second competitive season. Nine runners participated and came together to field a Regional Team for the first time.
The 2006 Pilot Cross Country Team saw marked improvements in times compared to last year. The program upped its training intensity and strengthened its schedule and the resulting progress made by each runner over the course of the season was tremendous! Unfortunately some of our individual runners came up just shy of qualifying for the State Meet. Throughout the season, the program was able to fill full teams at meets and set a foundation of team racing for seasons to come. Fulton County also hosted a series of 4 meets called the Advantage Quad-Series, which allowed some of the area’s top teams to face off over the course of the season. The Pilot’s top finish this season was 4th Place in the Advantage Quad-Series JV Division, and a 3rd Place Varsity finish in Meet III of the Advantage Quad-Series.
Individually, sophomore Chris Foederer ended the season as the squad’s #1 runner finishing 32nd in the Region with a personal best time of 20:11.96. Tyler Vowell, another sophomore, had the next best season average and broke the school record for a 3K Race in 12:56.58. Junior, Lance Mudd landed the #3 spot and had the team’s second best finish at Regions placing 35th in a personal best of 20:33.78. Sophomore, Garrett Kelly was the #4 man and most consistent runner, averaging 22 minutes for a 5K. John Wilson, a junior had his best race of the season at Regionals placing 50th in 23:28.77. Matthew Whitt, was the most improved runner for the Pilots. The freshman shaved 6 minutes off of his 5K time from the beginning to the end of the season. Another freshmen, Sean Edgin rounded out the Pilot’s Regional team and made strides over the course of the season improving by 3 minutes at the Eagle Twilight Classic. Also competing for the Pilots during the 2006 regular season were freshman Emil Bandurowicz and sophomore Ben Wyland
2006-07 Powerlifting
SEASON PREVIEW
Fulton County High School will be conducting Winter Weight Training and Conditioning for athletes not currently involved in winter sports programs. This will give out-of-season athletes an opportunity to improve their overall physical fitness with a focus on muscular strength, agility, and speed which are elements common to ALL forms of sport.
The program will be open to students Grades 7-12 for supervised workouts Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 3:00-4:30 December 1st – February 15th.
Getting our athletes involved in pre/post season training is ESSENTIAL to competing at the highest level possible during the regular season! To keep in competitive form, students will have the opportunity to compete in Competitive Powerlifting Meets during the winter training season. Students should take advantage of these unique experiences and personal goal setting opportunities. If any students qualify, we will arrange for them an opportunity to showcase their skills at the State Level as well!

2006-07 Track & Field
SEASON PREVIEW
“2 Deep” is the motto this year for the Pilots & Lady Pilots. “We want our athletes’ commitment to excellence to run ‘too deep’, and we also plan to place ‘two (athletes) deep’ in each event we enter,” explains Coach Vito Spadafino, “It’s the only way we can get pull our strengths together and get the job done as a team.” Fulton County’s track & field program under the direction of head coach Spadafino and assistant coach Corey Smith will focus on quality instead of quantity this season. Lacking the numbers to fill all of the events, they plan to hone each athletes skills so the team can score “quality points” (1st -3rd place) with their top athletes and count on their #2 athletes to step up and earn them “bonus points” (4th – 6th place) in the same events. “Our numbers are down this year,” says Spadafino, “but we’ve still got the talent and don’t plan on cutting back on what we demand from our athletes. They’ve got to want it to win it, and understand that teams have won regional or state title with as few as 3 athletes in the past.”
The Lady Pilots have placed in the top 10 at State and placed 3rd in the Region the last 4 years led by 8 time State Champion Sharika Smith who was second in the nation this summer at the USATF Junior Olympics. The Lady Pilots team has never been huge but has always had the talent to score points and send athletes to state in the sprints, jumps, throws, and relays. This year’s girls roster consists of 10 athletes including half of which are returning state qualifiers. Smith, now a junior, and in her 5th year of high school track will be concentrating on the long & triple jumps and the sprint events from 100m-400m. Her goals this year include breaking her current state triple jump record, and regaining her 100m dash title that she won as an 8th grader but was eliminated from the last two yeas due to false starts. Joining Smith in the field events will be the dynamic throwing duo of sophomores Deanna Dean and Destany Johnson. Dean placed 13th in shot put and 8th in discus at state in 2006 and Johnson, a 12th place finisher in the shot put as an 8th grader in 2005, has transferred back to Fulton County from Indiana. “Both have gotten stronger and are consistently throwing in the 30 ft. and 90 ft. range in shot put and discus. With a top 2 finish in the throws they could really give us a boost,” says Spadafino. On the track, freshman Ladaria Gaston plans to be right on Smith’s heels in the sprints. Gaston has been a state qualifier and all-state selection on the girls 4x100m relay team the last two years. Due to a lack of relay partners she’ll be competing individually this year hoping to give the Lady Pilot’s that 1-2 punch in the sprints. Newcomers to the team include freshmen throwers Erica Blincoe and Chelsea Davis who are naturally strong and show a lot of potential in the shot put & discus. In the middle school, 7th graders, Paige Nolan, Ashley Eakes, and Laken Butler will represent the ladies and are currently perfecting their techniques in the discus & triple jump and plan to run anywhere from the 100m dash to the 800m this season
While the girls have been searching for that “extra something” to get them over the hump, the boys have been taking the slow and steady route climbing to the top of Region 1 Class A. Since 2003 when the seniors & juniors began track as middle schoolers the team has progressively placed 11th, 10th, 8th, and 7th in the region and each year has continued to send more athletes to state meet. This year’s team will be lead by senior Chaz Dial and juniors Tony Udley and Ladrekus Moffatt who are the team’s top returning place-winners in the region. These three along with junior Lance Mudd made up the team’s 4x400m relay team which placed 11th at state. Dial is an all around athlete that is a hard worker and would compete in every event if he could. Last year he placed 6th in the region in the long jump and ran the 300m hurdles as well. This year he plans to focus on the long jump, 100 & 200 dash, and the 4x200m & 4x400m relays. Udley a two time regional runner-up and state qualifier in the 400m dash hopes he can improve his times, claim a regional title, and place in the state. “One of Tony’s goals is running under 52 seconds for the 400m dash and breaking the school record,” says Spadafino. “Many of the top Class A 400m dash runners have finally graduated which creates an opening for Tony to move into a top spot at state this year.” Moffatt placed 5th in the 300m hurdles in the region last year and will again compete in that event as well as the long jump and relays. Mudd, normally a cross country and distance runner will be dropping down to middle distance to work on his speed competing in the 400m-1600m runs along with the relays. Other returners for the Pilots include utility athlete Nathan Grasfeder (jr.) who will compete in relays, sprints/middle distance, and throws along with Dariquez Scott (jr.), Mitchell Mulcahy (so.), and Sean Edgin (fr.) in the shot put & discus. Newcomers include freshman Matthew Whitt who will try his hand at throws & distance events and 7th grader LaDevin Fair who will do jumps, hurdles, and 100-400m dash at the middle school level.

SEASON IN REVIEW
2007 marked another successful season for the Pilot and Lady Pilot Track Teams. After an improved Cross Country Season and a cancelled Indoor Track Season, the team continued to build the program by implimenting a Powerlifting Program and continued the Jr. Pilots Track & Field Camp. The Middle School program was small but showed tremendous improvements over the course of the season by 7th Graders Laken Butler, Ashlee Eakes, and Paige Nolan. LaDevin Fair had the most success placing in 4 events at the Marshall Middle School Invitational while breaking the meet record in the 300m Hurdles. He also went on to Place 6th in the Region in that event at the High School Level.
The high school athletes showed great amounts of improvement over the course of the 2007 season. Each athlete shaved seconds or added inches & feet to their performances week to week. With low numbers this season, quality points helped both teams place 5th in the Region ans in the Top 10 at State. At the state meet the Girls Team placed 7th with just 3 individuals. Junior, Sharika Smith was a State Champion in 4 events winning the 100m Dash and Long Jump while breaking the Class A 200m Dash Record in 24.82 and Breaking her own Overall Triple Jump Record with a Jump of 39-3.25 earning her KTCCCA Female Athlete of the Year. Deanna Dean continued to move up the State Meet Discus ladder as she returned to place 4th this season. Freshman, Erica Blincoe also made her first appearance to Lexington qualifying in the Discus.
The 2007 team was led by senior Chaz Dial and juniors Tony Udley, Ladrekus Moffatt, Lance Mudd, and Nathan Grasfeder whose versatility helped set the tone for the season. As a team the boys moved up in the Region and had their first Top 10 Finish at State since 1990 by placeing 9th. The Pilots will only lose 1 athlete to graduation which is a bright spot for the future of the Pilot Track Program. Unfortunately that one person is Chaz Dial who was State Runner-up in the Long Jump, and a 3rd Place finisher in the 200m Dash. He was also part of two relay teams that qualified for state. Other Individuals placing at the state meet include Tony Udley placing 4th in the 400m Dash, and Ladrekus Moffatt who placed 8th in the 300m Hurdles and 13th in the Long Jump. In relay action the Boys 4x400m Team of Moffatt, Mudd, Dial & Udley were State Runners-up and the 4x200m Relay Team of Grasfeder, Moffatt, Udley & Dial placed 4th. Other athletes who contributed to the teams' success by placing at the Regional Meet include junior Dariquez Scott 5th in Shot Put, sophomore Mitchell Mulcahy 5th in Discus, and Freshmen Ladaria Gaston 6th in 100m Dash, and Chelsea Davis 5th in Shot Put. These athletes will be the core of the 2008 team that hopes to return as one of the top teams in the region.
