About Rec

Warhawks Wrestling Club fields three recreational “rec” level teams are for Beginners (1st and 2nd year) and Intermediate level wrestlers.  The season runs November through February.  Recreational teams compete in the Howard County Wrestling League organized by Howard County Wrestling (HCW) through Howard County Parks and Recreation.

Weight classes for the recreational season are an age-weight matrix, allowing younger wrestlers in a given weight class to be heavier than older ones.

Additionally, coaches spend a great deal of time preparing for dual meets making competitive bouts for the wrestlers so that wresters are competing at the same ability level within the weight class.  At the recreation level t makes no sense to have an experienced wrestler in a bout with a less experienced one.  If the bout lasts 15 seconds, no one has gained any experience.

Practice begins the 2nd week of November with the entire rec program practicing together at "the Barn" for evaluations and to ensure that all participants learn to wrestle the “Warhawks Way”. Additional practices are available for intermediate level wrestlers at “the Barn”.

Competition

Competition begins the 1st week of January through the first weekend in March, with an end of season tournament. Matches are predominantly on Sunday morning in the Frederick region.

Highly recommended for intermediate wrestlers, and concurrent with the Recreation season, is the MSWA “FUTURE CHAMPIONS” Tournament Series which has two tracks, one for Beginner (1st year wrestlers) and one for Experienced (intermediate level wrestlers).  These round robin tournaments are held predominantly on Sundays, supported by Warhawks coaches and culminate in State Tournament in February.
