Trojans silent Cubs; win Foothills Middle School Conference

Game Stats vs. Mount Airy

10/27/10

King - The Chestnut Grove Trojans beat rival Mount Airy 24-8 yesterday for the Foothills Middle School Conference Championship by going undefeated. The Trojans, led by first year Head Coach Vaughn Bozman, have now won the conference championship three out of the last four years with a combine 25-3 record over that period.

Mount Airy (6-1) got on the board first with an 11-play 99-yard drive when they scored from 12-yards out at the 2-minute mark of the first quarter. The extra point was good and the Cubs led 8-0.

It took all of 39-seconds for the Trojans (7-0) to respond. Keyshawn Rawley connected with Justin Bennett for a 13-yard gain, and then a personnel foul by Mount Airy moved the ball to the Cubs 30-yard line. Rashad Witherspoon then made the difference up on his 16th touchdown of the season and then Rawley found Bennett in the back of the end zone for the 2-point conversion that knotted the score at 8 with 1:25 left in the quarter.

The Trojans and Cubs fought over the next two quarters with no one scoring. Chestnut Grove finally broke through with 5-minutes left in the game when Rawley hit a streaking Bennett down the left side line for a 40-yard pick up and the lead. Rawley swept around the left end for the 16-8 advantage.

Chestnut Grove added some insurance points when they stopped Mount Airy on four downs near midfield. Trying to run the clock down, Rawley broke through the line on third down and galloped 45-yards for pay dirt. Bennett and Rawley hooked up one more time to finalize the score.

Chestnut Grove tallied 252-yards of offense in the game with 101 of them through the air. Rawley was 5-of-10 with one TD and no interceptions. He rushed for another touchdown and had 73-yards on 9-carries. Bennett caught four of Rawleys passes for 74-yards and a TD.

Mount Airy had 171-yards of offense with 152-yards on the ground. 99 of those yards came on the first drive of the game with a time of possession advantage of 21:35 to 10:25.

Junior Snow led the Trojans defense with 12-tackles. Keelan Marshall had 10-tackles, while Preston Jacobs, Dorin Johnson, and Dee Stewart had 8-tackles each.

Trojans overtake Warriors

The Chestnut Grove Trojans hosted county rival and conference leader Southeastern Warriors on Wednesday, October 28th at West Stokes High School in a Foothill Conference football game. The Trojans took a 2-0 lead in the second quarter on a safety and never trailed in their 22-8 victory.

After the safety, the Trojans' Malik Banner dashed 50-yards for the first touchdown of the game. After the extra point pass was caught by John Seat, Chestnut Grove led 10-0.

Southeastern responded with a quick score, but allowed too much time on the clock for the Trojans. Banner and the Trojan offense marched down the field and scored when Banner connected with Keyshawn Rawleigh with less than 30-seconds before the half. The Trojans missed the extra-point, but led 16-8 at the half.

In the second half, both teams played well on the defensive side of the ball. The Trojans stopped the Warriors twice on fourth down. The first stop came with less than 3-minutes left in the game and the Warriors inside the Trojans' 10-yard line. After a fumble by Chestnut Grove, the defense held tight again and stopped Southeastern when Brett Whittington sacked the Warriors' quarterback on fourth down with less than 1:30 in the game.

The Trojans looked to burn some clock, but scored with Banner broke free for another long run to pay dirt and sealed the win with less than a minute in the contest.

With records of 6-1 for both teams, the Trojan tied the Warriors for the Foothill Co-Conference Championship. The championship is the second in three years for Chestnut Grove and the first for Southeastern since the 1990's.
