Batting Helmets
GSA provides each intramural and select baseball team with 4-5 NOCSAE (National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment) approved batting helmets. Last year, GSA allowed a certain number of players to wear helmets purchased individually. Unfortunately--as we feared would happen--many of these were clearly not adequate.
This year, in order to allow players to have individual helmets, and to be absolutely certain that all helmets in use are safe--GSA will offer for sale to players--at GSA cost-- the same type helmet which is supplied to each team in the team equipment bag. Each manager will have a list of the players who purchased helmets through GSA. Only those players will be allowed to wear helmets other than helmets from the team equipment bag. This is purely a safety issue. We do not want any head injuries.
GSA believes that this is the best way to handle this issue. Parents concerned about sharing helmets will be able to have an individual helmet, and both parents and GSA will know the helmet is safe. This solution also removes the individual team manager from the difficult responsibility of judging helmet quality.
The best way to order a helmet is to give a check to your coach for $15.00. Please write the helmet size you want on the check. Your coach will coordinate a team order. Alternatively , you can call Eric Brusoe at 202-327-4160 (C) or email him at Eric.Brusoe@tma.osd.mil. The helmets are NOCSAE approved and meet industry standards for safety.
