FLOYDS KNOBS — Finally, after multiple days, the girls’ golf sectional at Valley View golf course is complete. North Harrison won the team competition and North Harrison's Allison Dooley was the individual medalist.

"Overall, we've had a good season. We finished 17-7, won our invitational, and finished 8th in the sectional. The girls made a lot improvements this season.", said Coach Robin Embry. He added, "Katie Spellman struggled a bit today, but played solid all season. She's had a nice senior season. Both freshmen, Katie and Sara, improved throughout the season. I hope they continue that improvement by getting in a lot of quality practice time between now and next season. Carissa played well today. Of course, we would have liked her to have been three strokes better - but she should be happy with herself. She's played well all season."

    Golf Preview - Henryville
8/7/2008 by Kevin Harris (The Evening News)

The Hornets must replace a top player themselves in Tosha Embry, who advanced to regional last year.

The two Henryville players who are expected to fill that role are senior Katie Spellman and Embry’s sister, Carissa. The younger Embry, a sophomore, is currently playing with a fractured thumb.

Head coach Robin Embry, father of both Embry girls, hopes his top two golfers will be averaging scores in the low to mid 40s by sectional.

“I think Katie Spellman can have a good season,” Coach Embry said. “If she can continue to improve, she has a chance to shoot a good round at sectional and advance out.”

A pair of freshmen currently make up the third and fourth positions in the Hornet lineup. They are Katie Cleveland and Sarah Henson.

Henryville will face several Class 2A and 3A teams on its schedule, which includes Madison, Silver Creek and Corydon. The Hornets will also host the Class A Invitational.

"It was a great experience for the kids and myself. I think they enjoyed playing in an event that, although competitive, was more of a showcase," said Henryville coach Robin Embry, who served as the 1A East coach. "Obviously, I'm very proud of the three kids from Henryville, but it was great to see Deuce as well. All four represented the 1A East squad very well in this inaugural East/West All-Star event. Duece shot a very nice round especially considering it's a course he's not familiar with. It was a nice event for all four to conclude their high school careers and I was honored to play a small part in it."

Tosha Embry picked up the award for Longest Drive for girls while Tucker had the Most Accurate Drive for boys. Embry also was named the Nancy Fitzgerald Mental Attitude Award winner along with Oregon-Davis' Lauren Kuss. The award is based on both academics and golf performance.

At the start of the season, Floyd Central girls’ golf coach Mike Cason was confident that this year’s edition of the Highlanders could be the one to break the team’s drought of state tournament appearances.

On Saturday, the coach of the boys’ state champions watched his girls go prove him correct.

The Highlanders, champions of last weekend’s Floyd Central Sectional, nearly added a regional crown to their hardware collection on Saturday, firing a team score of 339 to finish second at the Boonville Regional at Quail Crossing Golf Club. The top three team finishers advanced to next week’s state tournament.

    ...

Henryville senior Tosha Embry also competed at Quail Crossing as an individual, firing a 95 with a 50 on the front nine and a 45 on the back. Known as a big hitter, Embry struggled somewhat with the narrowness of the course’s fairways, finding some of the trouble that the Highlanders managed to avoid.

Her day got off to a bad start, as her drive on the first hole would have ended close to the green, but bounced off the cart path and into a hazard.

“It was a good shot, but just ended awful,” said Embry’s father and coach, Robin Embry. “I just thought if she could keep it in play, she’d shoot a good score. She hit three balls out of bounds and that’s six strokes right there. Other than the penalty strokes, she played pretty well.”

Embry still improved on the final nine holes, although she still ended up 12 shots higher than in her practice round earlier this week. It was Embry’s first regional after she qualified at Valley View last weekend.

“It was really the pressure of the regional and all that, but the back nine was much better.” Robin Embry said.

New Albany’s Kylia Sullivan also advanced out at Valley View, opening the front nine with a 46, before fading with a 52 on the back to post a 98.

The day still belonged to Floyd, which Cason believes could have fared even better if not for some putting gone wrong.

“Our putting was not as strong,” Cason said. “If we would have putted as well as we can, we very well could have won the tournament.”

The state championship will be held Friday and Saturday at Legends of Indiana Golf Course.

    On The Spot: Tosha Embry
Henryville Senior ready for one last swing

    9/18/2007 by Matt Cress(Evening News)

    Tosha - On The Spot

Tosha Embry will get to continue her high school golf career for at least one more weekend.

The Henryville senior got the news on Saturday, when she led all scorers from non-advancing teams during the Floyd Central girls’ golf sectional at Valley View Golf Club with a 91.

A four-year veteran of the team who has become one of the most-decorated golfers in Henryville history while also playing for her dad, Robin, Embry will play in her first regional this Saturday at Quail Crossing Golf Club in Boonville.

Of course, Embry has also succeeded on more than the links, suiting up for the Hornet basketball and softball teams, and currently sitting second in her class with a 3.96 grade-point-average.

“On the Spot” sat down with Embry at the sectional to discuss the game of golf, the perils of living in Henryville and why she doesn’t like cross country.

QUESTION: How did you feel about your round?
TOSHA EMBRY: “I felt pretty confident out there. It is my final sectional, so I put a lot of pressure on myself, but I felt good.”

Q: I hear you are sort of like Henryville’s version of John Daly?
EMBRY: “I enjoy driving the ball. I definitely drive it a little further than a lot of the girls I play with. I don’t know if that’s a good thing. It’s actually a disadvantage because my short game is not so hot.”

Q: What’s wrong with it? Do you not enjoy the short game?
EMBRY: “I like driving and I like hitting full irons. I like the full swings, none of that chipping or putting stuff.”

Q: What’s it like to play for your dad?
EMBRY: “He’s really laid back. He wants us to do well, but as long as we play to our capability, he’s proud of us. It’s not a lot different than other coaches, but sometimes the coaching does come home.”

Q: I’m sure he had something to do with you picking up the game, right?
EMBRY: “It was definitely my dad. When I was a kid, we’d go to Twilight and I always played after that. The better I got, the more I enjoyed it. So I guess it all started in fifth grade, but I didn’t get really serious until my freshman year. It was only this summer that I realized I really love to play.”

Q: I am well-known for fits of anger on the course. How do you show your frustration?
EMBRY: “I don’t do that a lot. I show it sometimes, but not very often. You can see it in my face sometimes that I upset, but I’ve gotten much better on working on the shot in front of me and letting the past shots go.”

Q: Are you going to pursue this in college?
EMBRY: “I plan on playing. I’ve talked to a couple of coaches, from Indiana Tech and Rose Hulman. I think my dad has gotten stuff from other coaches, but I haven’t talked to anyone else yet.”

Q: Those aren’t bad choices. What are you going to study?
EMBRY: “I want to be an engineer. What type of engineer I’m not sure of yet. Maybe mechanical engineering.”

Q: You play some other sports, right? What’s your favorite?
EMBRY: “I play basketball and softball. I would choose golf or softball if I had to pick. It’s defintely not basketball.”

Q: You’ve got quite a bit on your plate there...
EMBRY: “About the same time I started playing golf, my mom and dad made me play basketball. When I got to middle school, I wanted to play volleyball and tennis, which I did for a couple years. Then I ran cross country for a while. I liked cross country, if it wasn’t for the running part. It’s just fun for me. I guess I’m a pretty competitive person.”

Q: What else do you do?
EMBRY: “There isn’t a whole lot else going on. Sometimes I’ll be with some people and we’ll be like ‘let’s do something.’ Then we realize we’re in Henryville and there’s nothing to do.”

Q: So you made it to the regional. What do you expect that to be like?
EMBRY: “I’ve never played that course before, so I’m not sure there. I mean, I’d prefer to preform well, but it’s more about the excitement of making it out. I want to play well, of course, but I’m just going to enjoy the experience.”

Floyd Central cruises to sectional title

FLOYDS KNOBS — The competition was all but over, but that didn’t stop Whitney Welch from putting the exclamation point on Floyd Central’s day anyway.

The Highlander senior chipped in for eagle on the par-4 18th hole to cap off Floyd’s victory at the Floyd Central girls’ golf sectional at Valley View Golf Club on Saturday.

    ...

Sullivan wasn’t the only local individual to advance to Quail Crossing, as Henryville’s Tosha Embry was the top scorer on non-advancing teams. A senior, Embry’s 91 got her to the regional round for the first time in her career. The top three individuals on non-advancing teams moved on to regional.

While Embry spent her time milling around the clubhouse with friends while awaiting the results, the whole Henryville team got to celebrate making a bit of history. The Hornets combined for a 420, good enough for sixth place of the 11 teams. It was the highest all-time finish for any Henryville golf team.

“We felt like Floyd Central and North Harrison were a little bit better than everyone else,” said Henryville coach Robin Embry. “If we had played a better front nine, it’s very possible we could have gotten out.”

All four of the scoring Hornets had an easier time on the back nine, including Ericka Runyon, who followed a 60 on the front side with a 46 on the back. Katie Spellman was six better on the back en route to a 113 and Carissa Embry fired a 110 for Henryville.

Still it was Tosha Embry’s day for the Hornets. She was shaky early, hitting the turn with a 48, but went 1-under on the last five holes of the back side, ultimately carding a 43.

“I’m just really happy for her, both as a coach and a dad,” Robin Embry said. “It was really looking rough early, but she came through in the end.”

While there was elation for Henryville, it was a tougher day for another senior, Charlestown’s April Scott. She delivered a 96, but was disqualified for signing an incorrect scorecard. That meant the Pirates had only three scoring players, not enough to score as a team.

    ...

    Girls Golf Preview
8/2/2007 by Kevin Harris (Evening News)

The Hornets have three players back from last year’s record-breaking squad, which went 18-0 during the 2006 regular season. The undefeated mark was just the second for any girls’ sports team in Henryville history.

Tosha Embry is the lone senior on the squad. She has the most varsity experience of any Hornet as she has been in the starting lineup the past three seasons.

Juniors Ericka Runyon and Katie Spellman return, and coach Robin Embry hopes both players can post scoring averages in the 40s.

Coach Embry thinks the key will be his No. 4 and 5 players. Sophomore Abby Taylor will be playing high school golf for the first time, while freshman Carissa Embry was the top player on the Henryville Junior High School team the past couple of years.

“We return three girls from last season’s team and that experience will help,” coach Embry said. “However, we’ll need our newcomers to contribute throughout the season. It’ll be difficult to match the season we had last fall, but I expect us to be very competitive with every school on our schedule. We have the potential to be pretty good.”

Henryville faces a schedule with several Class 4A and 3A schools. They include Silver Creek, Corydon, Charlestown, Madison and Jeff.

Summer Tours End / Practice Begins
    7/23/2007
Golf practice begins the week of July 30th, 2007, with the first scheduled matches to be played August 2 & 3, 2007. Practice will be at Hidden Creek each non-match day (Monday - Friday) through mid September 2007 (see the on-line schedule for match dates). Any girl entering the 7th - 12th grades can contact Coach Robin Embry for information concerning the golf team.

Tosha & Carissa Embry spent part of their summer participating in the Pepsi Indiana Junior Golf Program. They competed on the MOUNTAIN DEW JUNIOR TOUR (Carissa - Girls Age 13-14 & Tosha - Girls Age 17-19). The tour conducts over 40 events and each player can compete in up to six events. Carissa competed part time (she played in three events) and finished 34th of over 65 girls in her age group. There were over 100 girls participate in the 17-19 age group where Tosha finished 28th.

"It was a good experience for both of the girls. They played some nice courses and got used to playing 18 holes under USGA rules. Hopefully, it's helped prepare them for the upcoming season.", said coach Embry

Five of this season's varsity players - Ericka Runyon, Katie Spellman, Abby Taylor, Carissa, & Tosha - participated in group clinics at Hidden Creek. As well as, junior high player - Katie Cleveland.

"I'm glad to see the girls participate in the clinics. Zach and the staff at Hidden Creek to a great job. The clinics help prepare the girls for the upcoming season. I'm looking forward to a good season.", stated coach Embry

    Hornets a team for history
    9/22/2006
By KEVIN HARRIS (courtesy of The Evening News)

As his team got closer to completing an undefeated regular season this month, Henryville girls’ golf coach Robin Embry went on a fact-finding mission to see if his players made history.

After talking to lots of people in the Henryville community, he found out the Hornets indeed did.

To the best of several Henryville fans’ knowledge, the girls’ golf squad is only the third team — and the first female squad — in school history to post a perfect record in the regular season. The Hornets concluded their 18-0 regular season on Sept. 13 with a 191-222 victory over Jeffersonville at Hidden Creek Golf Club’s Links 9 course.

The Henryville boys’ basketball program posted the other two perfect regular seasons. The Hornets accomplished both those feats in back-to-back seasons — 1944-45 (19-0) and 1945-46 (17-0). The unbeaten campaigns helped Henryville build a 41-game, regular-season win streak.

Embry says beating a huge school like Jeff was simply the icing on the cake to a great season.

"For Henryville to beat Jeffersonville at anything is a big deal. It's big for our community", said Embry, whose squad will be honored for its accomplishment with a team picture mounted inside Henryville's Spurgeon Gymnasium. "I'm extremely proud. It is hard to single out any one of the girls. The girls committed themselves individually to get better."

The Hornets broke every team record en route to the perfect mark. The 18 wins were the most in school history and they shot a new nine-hole school record of 172 on Aug. 30 at Links 9 against Charlestown.

Senior Amanda Cleveland set a new school record for most medalist honors in a season with nine. Junior Tosha Embry, the coach's daughter, became the all-time medalist winner at HHS with 20.

Also making contributions to the Hornets' unscathed run were sophomores Ericka Runyon and Katie Spellman and junior Alyson Embry, the coach's niece.

Robin Embry is proud of the way his team persevered against a schedule that included mainly Class 2A and 3A schools.

"When you are a Class A school and two-thirds of your schedule are bigger schools, the girls took pride in competing against any school around the area", coach Embry said.

The one match that stood out to Embry this season was a triangular meet at Wooded View Golf Course in Clarksville, a course where the Hornets have struggled in the past. Even though the Hornets won by 10 strokes over second-place Crawford County, they were discouraged by posting a season-high score of 215.

After the match, they decided to have a practice session at Hidden Creek right before their match the next day at Wooded View between Silver Creek and Clarksville. It paid off as Henryville defeated the Dragons by 18 strokes.

"It was a big-time goal for them. The girls are excited", Embry said about the undefeated mark.

Henryville should be proud of what the girls' golf team accomplished this year. A perfect record in any sport is something a school and a community should relish for a lifetime.

    Henryville falls short in sectional
    9/15/2006

The Lady Hornets shot a 422 to finish 10th of 19 schools in the Seymour sectional held at Shadowood golf course in Seymour, IN. As expected Floyd Central earned the sectional title firing a 358, almost 30 strokes better than any other team. Henryville was led by Junior Tosha Embry's 100. Next for the Lady Hornets was Ericka Runyon with a 103, Amanda Cleveland shot 104, Katie Spellman carded 115, and Alyson Embry finished with a 129. "None of the girls played bad, it's just none of them played well. We were expecting Amanda and Tosha to combine for about 180-190 and two of the other three to combine for about 200. That would have gave us a shot at advancing out. I think the emotions and expectations kind of got to us. But even with that, Tosha finished in the top 25, Ericka was in the top 30, and Amanda was in the top 35. Just looking at the underclassmen, Tosha was 12th and Ericka was in the top 20. That's good for next season.", coach Embry said.

He added, "We've had a great season. We finished a perfect 18-0, we won our invitational for the second year in a row, we set a record in every team category we keep, Amanda and Tosha shot the second best 9-hole scores on record, Amanda set a new season record for matches won, and Tosha set a new career record for matches won. Each of the girls have a big part in a season they'll never forget and four of these girls will be back next season - we could be good again."

    Henryville 422 - T. Embry (100), Runyon (103), Cleveland (104), Spellman (115), A. Embry (129)

Henryville gets win over Jeffersonville; Complete perfect season
    9/13/2006

The Lady Hornets defeated Jeffersonville at Hidden Creek's Links 9 golf course in Sellersburg, IN. Henryville was led by Senior Amanda Cleveland's 42. Ericka Runyon was close behind with her career best 46. "Amanda and Ericka played well. Amanda has had a great senior season and Ericka's extra practice is beginning to pay dividends", said Coach Robin Embry. Jeffersonville was led by Ella Woolridge's 48. Angel Nelson, playing as an individual from Restoration Christian, shot 55.

Henryville completed a perfect season, improving their record to 18-0. "I'm not sure if we've ever had any sport teams record a perfect season other than the two basketball teams that hang in the gym. In addition, I'm not sure that we've ever defeated Jeffersonville in head-to-head competition. Maybe we've done both, but each would be a real rarity. These girls deserve a lot of credit. They quietly set this goal for themselves at the beginning of the season and they achieved it. I'm very happy for them. It's a special group of girls and they just completed a special season", stated Coach Embry.

Commenting on each player, Coach Embry said, "As I said before, Amanda has had a great senior season. She has a good short game and her ball striking has improved. She's not recorded a single high score for a match this season. Again, just a solid season. Tosha has had a very nice season. Other than three matches, she's averaged about 42 - that's really strong. She hits the ball extremely long which leaves her with a lot of 30-60 yard approach shots, which are tough shots. When her short game is on, she's very good. Katie has really improved this season. Her ball striking has gotten better as well as her short game. She's very close to posting a lot of scores in the 40's. Ericka has put in some extra practice time this season and it's paying off. She continues to improve in all phases of her game. She's close to consistently recording scores in the 40's. Alyson has had a very nice debut season. She has nice touch around the greens and her ball striking is improving. She's close to shooting in the 40's. Overall, each girl has improved and it's been a season to remember. These girls should have a lot of pride in what they've accomplished."

"Hopefully, each girl can play well in the sectional and we'll see where that leaves us. Floyd Central is the heavy favorite to win. However, there are 6-8 teams that could take the next two spots and advance to the regional. I think we're in that group, but we'll have to play well. There's 18 teams in our sectional, six are 4A schools and six are 3A schools, that'll make it tough. Regardless of what happens at the sectional, these girls have completed a very rare thing - a perfect season", he concluded.

    Henryville 191 - Cleveland (42), Runyon (46), T. Embry (51), Spellman (52), A. Embry (53)
    Jeffersonville 222 - E. Woolridge (48), A. Newcomb (55), A. Pangburn (59), E. Hampton (60), L. Gavin (62), A. Vandgrift (63), R. Clemons (64)
    Restoration Christian - A. Nelson (55)

Henryville defeats Eastern and Borden; Moves to 17 - 0
    9/6/2006

Henryville recorded a 193 to defeat Eastern's (Pekin) 235 and Borden's 256 at Hidden Creek's Links 9 golf course in Sellersburg, IN. The Lady Hornets improved their season record to a perfect 17 - 0. "We were a little rusty from the holiday break. The girls hadn't practiced much since our last match. Nothing bad, just a few loose shots here and there. Hopefully, we can get in some good practice time before our next match.", stated coach Robin Embry.

Tosha Embry earned medalist honors with a 42. She has been medalist in the last four matches. "Tosha is playing well. In our last four matches she's averaged less than 42. We hope she can keep that up.", said coach Embry. Eastern was led by Ashley Kaelin's 49. Maria Kirchgessner carded a 59 to lead Borden. Restoration Christian's Angel Nelson, playing as an individual, fired a 47.

    Henryville 193 - T. Embry (42), A. Cleveland (45), E. Runyon (52), K. Spellman (54), A. Embry (58)
    Eastern (Pekin) 235 - Kaelin (49), Webster (59), Dillon (60), Rogers (67), Jarrell (67)
    Borden 256 - Kirchgessner (59), Carter (63), Cook (65), Roll (69), Koch (70)

Henryville improves to 15 - 0; Sets Scoring Record
    8/30/2006

The Lady Hornets are on a roll. After setting a new scoring record Monday while winning their own Invitational, they came back today to better that mark by seven shots - a 172. Charlestown shot a 222, and was led by Laurel Clapp's 53. Angel Nelson, playing as an individual from Restoration Christian, shot 47.

In route to their 15th win of the season against no losses, each player shot a career best score. "Amanda shot a very nice round earlier in the year at Hoosier Hills, but it doesn't compare to this one. The course at Hoosier Hills was set up as a non-regulation, less than 1500 yards, par 30 course. Her and Tosha shot the best round I've seen at Henryville since we started the program 5 years ago. Jenny Dunn, who was an extremely good high school player, shot 36 three times and 39 twice. Tosha and Amanda tied the rounds of 39 - that's really strong!.", complemented Coach Robin Embry. He was quick to add, "Not only did those two play well, but Ericka, Katie, and Alyson each shot a personal best as well. These three have improved tremendously! The bottom line is that all five of these girls are playing great and are on a big time roll. Hopefully, we'll keep our comittment to improvement and keep heading in the right direction. I'm very happy for all five of these girls".

    Henryville 172 - Cleveland (39), T. Embry (39), Runyon (46), Spellman (48), Embry (52)
    Charlestown 222 - Clapp (53), Scott (55), Jones (57), McQuillen (57)
    Restoration Christian - Nelson (47)

    On The Spot: Amanda Cleveland
Hornet Senior as busy as a bee

    8/29/2006 by Kevin Harris(Evening News)

    Amanda - On The Spot

Senior Amanda Cleveland is the top player on this year’s Henryville girls’ golf team.

Cleveland has led the Hornets to a 14-0 record in 2006. Cleveland has earned medalist honors 11 times in her career. She shot a career-low 37 in a meet against Pekin Eastern and Clarksville at Hoosier Hills Golf Course in Borden on Aug. 9.

The 37 was the second-lowest nine-hole score in program history. The school record is 36 by former Henryville golfer Jenny Dunn.

“On The Spot” caught up with Cleveland prior to Monday’s invitational.

Question: What have you thought about your season so far?
Amanda Cleveland: “I think our season has been pretty good. Myself, I think I’m doing great and everybody else is helping out.”

Q: What would you like to accomplish by season’s end?
Cleveland: “I’d like to get out of sectional this year, make it to regional and have a couple more wins. And I would like to have an undefeated season.”

Q: How did it feel to shoot the second-lowest nine-hole score in school history earlier this month?
Cleveland: “It was really great. I was really excited. It was even better the next day to find out that I (almost) matched the school record.”

Q: What area of your golf game have you worked on the most this season?
Cleveland: “I have worked on long distance the most because I’m exceptional in my short game. I have been having trouble with my long distance, like my driver. I had to straighten (my drives) out.”

Q: Your home course is Hidden Creek’s Links 9. What do you like and dislike about this course?
Cleveland: “I like this course because it is open and there are not a lot of hazards. My dislike is whenever you go to a different course, you meet all the hazards and I really don’t have any experience with them. This course is a little shorter than the others.”

Q: I understand you are also playing for the volleyball team this fall. How are you organizing your time between both teams?
Cleveland: “Basically, whenever I don’t have a golf match, I have a volleyball match and every once in a while I’ll get a (volleyball) practice in. I had to complete 10 practices before my first (volleyball) game, but that’s all I’ve had. Whenever I am there, I usually show up late because of golf practice.”

Q: How many sports are you playing at Henryville this season?
Cleveland: “I play three. I used to play five. It got too much for me.”

Q: What is the third sport will you play this year?
Cleveland: “Softball.” (She used to be on the girls’ basketball and girls’ track teams.)

Q: Why do you like to play so many sports?
Cleveland: “It keeps you active and out of trouble. I have to have a busy schedule at all times. I have to be running around.”

Q: How tough is it to keep up with your academics when you play so many sports?
Cleveland: “It is really hard to do. You’ve just got to keep yourself on a schedule and put (pushing) yourself toward your work and what you have to do.”

Q: What is your favorite sport and why?
Cleveland: “My favorite sport is golf because you can do it for as long as you are alive. There is always something new to learn about it. You can never have a perfect swing, so you are always learning something about it.”

Q: Have you made any college plans yet?
Cleveland: “I’m thinking about attending (the University of Louisville) and taking two years of pre-pharmacy courses. Then I’m going for four years at Sullivan (University) in their upcoming pharmacy courses.”

Q: Would you like to play any sports in college if the opportunity arises?
Cleveland: “If the opportunity is there, I would.”

Summer Tours End / Practice Begins
    7/28/2006
Golf practice begins at 4:30 pm on Monday July 28, 2006 at Hidden Creek Golf Course. Practice will be at the same time and place each non-match day (Monday - Friday) through September 16, 2006 (see the on-line schedule for match dates). Any girl entering the 7th - 12th grades can contact Coach Robin Embry for information concerning the golf team.

Tosha Embry spent part of her summer participating in the Pepsi Indiana Junior Golf Program. She competed on the MOUNTAIN DEW JUNIOR TOUR (Girls Age 15-16). The tour conducts over 40 events and each player can compete in up to six events. There were over 140 girls participate in the 15-16 age group. Tosha finished 44th even though she competed only part-time (she played only four events).

"It was a good experience for her. She played some nice courses and got used to playing 18 holes under USGA rules. Next summer, if she plays six events, she'll have a shot at making the top 15 and getting into the tour championship. She did really well for her first season.", said coach Embry

Three of this season's varsity players - Amanda Cleveland, Alyson Embry, & Tosha Embry - competed at Hidden Creek in their Junior Tournament Series. In addition, two of this year's junior high players competed - Katie Cleveland and Carissa Embry.

    Henryville places 11th in sectional
9/17/2005 by Staff Reports (The Evening News)
Henryville entered its first girl's golf team into the IHSAA state tournament on Saturday (September 17, 2005), when the 2005 team participated in the Seymour Sectional. The girls finished 11th of 18 teams, shooting a 423.

At the midway point, after shooting 200, Henryville was just eight strokes out of 4th place. "We played well on the front side. Amanda had her best nine hole score of her career. Ericka and Carrie were below their average, and Tosha and Katie were just slightly above their average. I thought things were looking good." stated coach Embry.

However, the girls began to struggle on the back side and shot their highest nine hole score of the year - a 223. No player was able to shoot below 50. "I was really surprised with our scores on the back side. I really don't know what to say? Was it the long day? slow play? pressure? I simply don't know." said coach Embry.

Despite the poor back nine on Saturday, Henryville has had a very fine season. As a team, they set five school records: Most wins - 13, Low Average (18 holes) - 423, Low Score (18 holes) - 423, Low Average (9 holes) - 205.6, Low Score (9 holes) - 193. In addition, they shot the five lowest nine hole scores ever shot - 193, 196, 197, 198, and 201. They also won the first annual Henryville Invitational defeating Trinity Lutheran, Charlestown, and CAI. Coach Embry said, "We've had a really good season. We set several team records, a couple individual records, and every player improved their stroke average from last year. That's really all you can ask for and more." The individual record set was: Most career wins - Tosha Embry (15). In addition, Tosha and Amanda moved to second and third, respectively, on both the nine-hole career average and eighteen-hole career average.

Henryville, which will have it's top four players back, is expecting even better results next season. "We've got the potential to be very good next year. If the girls make a commitment and continue to practice between now and then, we're looking at another record-breaking year. I can't wait!" stated coach Embry.

    Henryville 423 - Cleveland (95), Embry (103), Runyon (104), Spellman (121), Lewellen (125)

    Jeff sets new school record
9/14/2005 by Staff Reports (The Evening News)
The Jeffersonville girls' golf team shot a school-record 179 yesterday as it defeated Henryville at Hidden Creek.

Erica Fuchs and Kelsey Yost led the Red Devils with a round of 42, tying with Henryville's Tosha Embry for match medalist.

"It was a great team effort and a good team finish before sectional," said Jeff coach Lisa Stemler. "Anytime your top four players shoot in the 40s is a good day. Hopefully, this carries over to Saturday."

For Henryville, Amanda Cleveland added 48, Katie Spellman shot a 52, Carri Lewellen carded a 54 and Erica Runyon recorded a 55.

"I expected it to be a bit closer," said Henryville coach Robin Embry. "Jeff shot their best score of the year. Their No. 3 and 4 shot better than their No. 1 and 2 and they all played well. They were simply better than us today."

Embry added, "We've had a very good year. Only five schools have beaten us and three of those were 4A schools. I hope these schools are still willing to schedule us next year even though they may be rebuilding and we'll have our top four players back. We have the potential to be very good next year."

    Jeffersonville 179 - Fuchs (42), Yost (42), Chesher (47), Botlo (48), Prather (57)
    Henryville 196 - Embry (42), Cleveland (48), Spellman (52), Lewellen (54), Runyon (55)

Trinity Lutheran was second with a 206 followed by Charlestown (238) and Christian Academy, which posted an incomplete.

Cleveland was the low-medalist of the day, beating out teammate Tosha Embry by one stroke. Katie Spellman finished with a 54 and Ericka Runyon a 57.

"Amanda shot a great round, her career low, and my two freshmen, Ericka and Katie, shot good rounds," said Embry. "I was concerned about Tosha after four holes. She was off to her worst start of the season. However, she played the last five holes in only 1-over, and we needed that strong finish."

For Charlestown, April Scott led the way with a 56. Paige Jones and Laurel Clapp each shot a 58 and Whitney Green rounded out scoring with a 66.

"We're at the point of the season where we should be improving our individual scores and our team score," said Charlestown coach Kim Carroll. "I know the girls are capable of shooting lower."

Silver Creek needs tiebreaker to beat Hornets
8/24/2005 by Staff Reports (The Evening News)
For the second time this season, the Silver Creek girls' golf team defeated Henryville. This time, though, it was a lot closer.

On Aug. 9, the Dragons beat Henryville by 12 strokes in a triangular meet. Yesterday, it came down to a fifth-score tiebreaker after both teams finished with a 206 at the par-37 Wooded View Golf Course in Clarksville.

Clarksville was third with a 236.

"I really felt for Katie Spellman," Henryville coach Robin Embry said of his No. 5 golfer, who finished four strokes behind Silver Creek's No. 5. "She felt like it was her fault, but I tried to explain to her that if just one of our top four golfers would have shot one stroke better, there wouldn't even have been a need for a tiebreaker."

Still, Embry isn't taking the loss too hard. Silver Creek and Floyd Central remain the only teams that have beaten the Hornets this year.

"All the kids played very well," he said.

Tosha Embry led the Hornets with a 45. Teammate Amanda Cleveland finished with a 51, and Henryville's Carrie Lewellen shot her season-low yesterday with a 54. Ericka Runyon rounded out scoring with a 56.

Silver Creek was paced by medalist Ashley Seaton's 44. Clarksville was led by Liz Carey's 53.

The Hornets will return to action Monday in the four-team Henryville Invitational at Hidden Creek's Links 9 Golf Course in Sellersburg at 5 p.m. Christian Academy, Charlestown and Trinity Lutheran will visit.

"Ericka Runyon continues her good play," Henryville coach Robin Embry said. "Tosha has had a little trouble the last couple of matches, but she'll get that ironed out in the next couple of days. Amanda Cleveland and Carrie Lewellen played well."

Tosha Embry led Henryville with a 49. Also for the Hornets, Amanda Cleveland shot a 53 and Ericka Runyon a 52.

"Our scores were up, but I kind of expected they would be because of the course," said Henryville head coach Robin Embry. "Of all our players, Ericka Runyon was the only one who shot below her average. We played this course last year and I knew coming in it would be pretty tough for us all-around."

    Floyd Central 187 - Welch (44), Thomas (45), Wicoff (47), Spencer (51), Hitner (58)
    Henryville 214 - Embry (49), Cleveland (53), Runyon (52), Spellman (60), Lewellen (65)

    Hornets Ready For 4th Season
8/1/2005 by Staff Reports (The Evening News)
In just their third year having a program, the Hornets finished 11-4 last season. Henryville hopes to continue improving in 2005, with three of its top five returning from a year ago, including its top two.

Sophomore Tosha Embry, coach Robin Embry's daughter, is back in the No. 1 spot. Junior Amanda Cleveland returns at the No. 2 position, and the team's only senior, Carrie Lewellen, could play as high as No. 3.

"I think we'll be improved overall," coach Embry said. "It'll be hard to improve on that record, but we're really expecting a good year."

Another reason for the optimism is the arrival of five freshmen who bring the team roster to an all-time high of eight. Embry thinks Ericka Runyon, Katie Spellman and Tara Murphy have the best chance to make an immediate impact.

At the Seymour Elks on Saturday, no Clark County team or individual advanced to the regional.

The highest finishing team was Providence, who tied for fourth with Bedford North Lawrence. The Pioneers shot a 377, seven strokes behind third-place Floyd Central. In the sectional the top three teams advance. Jeffersonville finished ninth with a score of 396. Silver Creek finished 11th, with a score of 408.

For Henryville, Tosha Embry and Amanda Cleveland also participated on an individual basis. Embry shot a 97, while Cleveland shot a 100.

"Both Tosha and Amanda played pretty well. Amanda shot a few strokes below her average and Tosha shot a few above hers," said Henryville coach Robin Embry. "Amanda started with a nine but then regrouped and shot a respectable score."

"There were four holes that really hurt Tosha. She was as much over par on those four holes as she was the other 14. But all in all, a good round for her first sectional.

"These two girls have been our leaders this season and I really look forward to the next couple of seasons with them," said Embry.

Henryville wins triangular match to conclude outstanding season
    9/14/2004 - courtesy of www.ccisb.com
It was an exciting, outstanding season for the Henryville girls' golf team in 2004. The Hornets had a record of 11-4, setting three school records in the process. Henryville has had a full girls' golf team for only three seasons.

Henryville set a team low record of 211 on September 8. They also compiled the lowest season team average of 223.5 to go along with the school's best girls' team golf season record.

"I'm extremely happy for the girls, especially my two seniors, Kayla Aguirre and Savanah Hollingsworth," said Henryville coach Robin Embry. "They each improved throughout the year and most importantly represented our community, our school, and themselves in a very respectable manner."

The Hornets' top player was freshman Tosha Embry, who won eight of 10 matches. "Tosha won eight of 10 matches and averaged 46.9. I think she'll work hard and trim that average by a few strokes next year," said the Henryville coach.

Henryville has their No.2 player returning next season in Amanda Cleveland. "Amanda has had another good season and I'm sure she'll be working on her game between now and next season to better her average as well," said Embry.

At Wednesday's match the Hornets bested Clarksville by 12 strokes and Trinity Lutheran by 15 strokes.

Leading the way was Tosha Embry, who shot a 42. "Tosha had a very good round despite starting out with 2 double-bogey on her first three holes," said Robin Embry.

Clarksville's Liz Carey had a good round at 49 to take second place.

For Henryville, Cleveland shot a 54, Hollingsworth a 56, which was her best score of the season, Aguirre a 60, and Carrie Lewellen a 68.

    Henryville (212) - Embry (42), Cleveland (54), Hollingsworth (56), Aguirre (60), Lewellen (68)
    Clarksville (224) - Carey (49), Parker (58), Elder (58), Montgomery (59)

Henryville finishes second in four-way match at Westwood

The Henryville golf team is closing in on the end of a very nice season. On Friday the Hornets played in a four-way match against Scottsburg, Trinity Lutheran, and Eastern and finished second overall.

Scottsburg won the match, shooting a 197. Henryville finished with 219, Trinity Lutheran 256, and Eastern was incomplete due to not enough participants.

The top finishers for Henryville were Tosha Embry and Amanda Cleveland, each with a 50. Carrie Lewellen shot a 58, and Kayla Aguirre and Savanah Hollingsworth each with a 61.

"I'm very happy with all the girls and the season we are having," said Henryville coach Robin Embry. "We have a chance this Wednesday to pick up win number 10 in only our third season of team competition. I can't say enough about how happy I am for these girls."

Tosha Embry has been medallist in almost every match this season, but Friday was an off day for her. "Tosha didn't play her best," said Robin Embry. "However, she's had a freshman season in which she's been the medallist 8 out of 10 matches and has shot in the 40s in 8 out of 10 matches."

It was one of the better outings for Amanda Cleveland. "Amanda has been extremely consistent and has had a really nice sophmore season," said the Henryville coach.

"It's really been a great season for the girls and I hope they finish it Wednesday by shooting their best team score," concluded Embry, who team's record is now 9-4.

Henryville's golf team this fall has enjoyed a lot of success, and that success continued Wednesday as they defeated Eastern, who did not field a complete team.

Tosha Embry was the match medallist for the seventh time, shooting a 47. Right behind her was Amanda Cleveland with a 48. "Amanda shot her season best and broke 50," said Henryville coach Robin Embry.

"I'm very pleased with the girls. We continue to improve and today we shot our lowest score of the season," said the Henryville coach.

Kayla Aguirre and Savanah Hollingsworth also turned in improving performances, with each of them shooting a 58. "Kayla and Savanah both broke 60 and shot their season best," said Embry.

Carrie Lewellen rounded out the Henryville team with a 64. "Carrie continues to have a good attitude and her scores are improving," complimented the Henryville coach.

The Hornets have a four-way match at Scottsburg on Friday and conclude their regular season next Wednesday at Turning Point. "Hopefully we can finish this season with a very good record. In addition, hopefully these final two matches will help get Tosha and Amanda ready to play in the sectional," said Embry.

The Silver Creek girls' golf team had an outstanding day on Friday in a triangular match with Henryville and Eastern. The Dragons easily got past their opponents as they finished with a team score of 189. Henryville was second with 217, and Eastern had an incomplete team.

Match medallist was Silver Creek's Ashley Seaton, who finished with a 42 on the par 35 course. Henryville's Tosha Embry was second with a 46 and had her six-match medallist streak broken.

"Silver Creek shot a very good round and ended our winning streak," said Henryville coach Robin Embry. "In addition, Tosha's streak of being medallist six straight times ended. Ashley Seaton shot a very good round and was the medallist of the match."

Henryville has a record of 6-3 with three matches remaining, and Embry likes what his team has done this season. "I've been extemely pleased with Tosha this season," said Embry. "She's played some very fine golf. Amanda was just a couple of shots away from scoring in the 40's and Savanah & Kayla were just a single shot away from shooting in the 50's."

"We have three matches left, so hopefully we can finish the season off with another win streak."

The Henryville golf team edged Charlestown by three strokes on Monday at Turning Point, and in the process won their fourth match in a row.

The match medalist was once again Henryville's Tosha Embry, as she finished with a 47, one stroke ahead of Charlestown's Jana Davis.

"We were fortunate to win against an improving Charlestown team," said Henryville coach Robin Embry. "It was a very close match."

In third place was Amanda Cleveland, who shot a 51. "Amanda continues to shoot consistent scores, and she'll be in the forties in a match or two," said Embry.

Tosha Embry has been the medalist in all five of Henryville's matches. "Tosha continues to hit the ball solid. However, she also continues to struggle on the greens. She's had a good first half of the season," said Robin Embry.

It was one of the Hornets' better outings, pleasing their coach. "We shot our lowest score of the year, so I'm happy with where the girls are at the midway point of our season," said Embry.

    8/27/2004 - courtesy of www.ccisb.com
On Friday Henryville beat Christian Academy of Indiana by default as CAI did not field a full team.

Tosha Embry was once again the match medalist, carding a 47, six strokes ahead of teammate Amanda Cleveland. Savanah Hollingsworth shot a 63, Carrie Lewellen a 65, and Kayla Aguirre a 66.

Christian Academy had only three players, and Henryville's team entire team finished ahead of two of those three.

"We've now won three matches in a row after finishing third in our opening triangular match with Silver Creek and Corydon," said Henryville coach Robin Embry. "This is the first time this season we've shot in the 220's, so our team continues to improve."

"Amanda is just a few shots from shooting in the 40's and I expect Savanah, Carrie, and Kayla to have a couple of rounds in the 50's before the season is over."

"Tosha continues to play well and has been the medalist in each of our four matches. She's struggled with her putting or she'd be posting some really low scores," Embry added.

The Henryville girls' golf team beat Christian Academy on Tuesday at Wooded View by a score of 231 to 254. Tosha Embry was the medalist, an honor she has taken in all three of Henryville's matches. Embry shot a 49. Amanda Cleveland of Henryville was second with a 51.

"Tosha and Amanda played well with the exception of hole #4 where they each had 10," said Henryville coach Robin Embry. "I'm expecting both of them to have a few rounds in the mid 40's."

Kayla Aguirre was fifth overall with a 63, and Savanah Hollingsworth finished with a 68. "Kayla's just a few shots away from shooting in the 50's and Savanah continues to improve," said Robin Embry.

"We've won two of the three matches we have had and Tosha has been medalist in each of the three. However, each player needs to keep improving for us to reach our preseason goals, both individually and as a team," he added.

The Henryville girls' golf team traveled to the Seymour Country Club on Wednesday and came away with a win over Trinity Lutheran. The Hornets posted a score of 231, besting Trinity Lutheran's 235.

Pacing Henryville and the match medalist was freshman Tosha Embry, who carded a 52. "Tosha started out poorly for the first three holes, but then managed to par a few holes and shoot a respectable 52," said Henryville coach Robin Embry "She's just a freshman, so to be the medalist in her first two matches is a good start. However, she knows she'll need to play better to be competitive throughout the season."

Amanda Cleveland was overall second with a 55. "Amanda shot a solid 55 and I expect her to start scoring a bit lower really soon," said Embry.

Kayla Aguirre and Savanah Hollingsworth each finished with 62. "Kayla and Savanah both played well and I wouldn't be surprised if they averaged in the upper 50's this season," added Embry.

"Overall, we played pretty well. It was a course we had never played and there were plenty of places to find trouble - water, boundries, and trees," Embry said.
