Kevin Ryan, with 2 strikes on him, then scorched a ground ball that was too hot for the 2nd baseman to handle. 2 runs scored on the error to put Mac Arthur up 6 to 4. Greg DePalma's double capped the scoring for the Generals. Rob Vitale, the Generals' ace, settled in on the mound and threw 5 straight scoreless innings to close out the win for Mac Arthur.

    Mege Leads MacArthur Over Mepham

After a walking tour of the Washington, D.C., the Generals awoke looking to rebound against the Trojans of Gaithersburg High School. In the first game of the doubleheader, the Generals came back in the top of the 7th to pull out the 8-6 victory. The Generals were down 4-3 in the 7th when Dan McDermott came off the bench to pinch hit with the bases loaded. Dan came through blasting a bases clearing triple over the right fielders head. Generals and Valley Stream Central Split First Two

After Mike Anarumo struck out 7 batters in 4 innings, Tyler Savin came in to pitch with no outs in the 5th inning and a runner on 1st. He induced a double play ball, and went on to pitch a scoreless 6th inning to earn the win. The Generals scored 3 in the 5th inning and 4 in the 6th inning to extend the lead to 13 to 5. The game started well for the Generals, as Steve McQuail homered in the 1st inning for the second consecutive game. This 2-run blast, and another run scored by Chris D'Arpa after a Mike Puka single, gave Mac Arthur the early 3 to 0 lead. The gritty Eagles battled back against Mac Arthur starter Matt Mege, to pull within 3 to 2. The Generals then took advantage of some sloppy defense to take a 5 to 2 lead in the top of the 5th inning. Dan McDermott scored the 5th run with a heads up dash to the plate as the Valley Stream catcher threw to 1st after a strike out. Once again, the Eagles clawed back to within 1 run at 5 to 4. Tyler Savin then relieved winning pitcher Matt Mege. Savin slammed the door on any chance of an Eagle comeback, retiring 6 straight hitters, 4 of them by strikeout.

    2008 Schedule

    2008 Season Preview
The Generals Baseball team enters the 2008 pre-season preparing for what may be one of the toughest regular season schedules in school history. Not only did the Generals graduate an incredible 16 players from last year's county finalist team, but with the new ability grouping that has been put into place in Nassau County, the Generals are set to face Nassau's best teams during the regular season. In their league, AA-I, the Generals are matched up with Massapequa, East Meadow, Syosset, and Mepham. Many of the juniors return this season to provide leadership to this year's squad.
Leading the offense this year will be the only returning offensive starter from last season, 2007 All-League selection and Captain, Senior Mike Gattus. Gattus will look to anchor an outfield that has many players fighting for starting spots including Seniors Joe Elio, Joe Johnson, Vin Sanquini and Junior Nick Sabatino.
In the infield, the Generals look to replace all 5 starters. Junior Chris Piperno will look to be the man behind the dish this year. Around the horn it could be anyone's spot. Seniors Chris D'Arpa and Bobby Rossi, as well as Junior Anthony Mazzella will work to win the job at the hot corner. Sophomore Nick McQuail, looks to step in at shortstop while, Seniors Justin Moore and Tyler Savin look to fight for time at short and second base along with Junior Alex Angus. First Base has a slew of candidates including Juniors John Krause, Kris Walters, and Sophomore Frankie Vanderka.
On the mound, the Generals will be lead by Senior Tyler Savin. Savin provided some valuable innings for Mac Arthur last year, winning 2 games and saving 2 games. The rest of the staff will be made up of Seniors Justin Moore, and Vin Sanquini, Juniors John Krause, and Kris Walters, and Sophomore Frankie Vanderka.
The coaching staff of Head Coach Steve Costello and Assistant Coach Vin Causeman are very excited about this season and look forward to seeing you at the Generals games during the year.

Generals Lead Empire Team to Gold
Head Coach Steve Costello and infielders Steve McQuail and Dan McDermott were selected to be part of the 2006 Long Island team in the prestigious Empire State Games this past summer. The Empire State Games is the largest competition of its kind in the nation.

Over 100 talented players from Nassau and Suffolk Counties tried out for the team. MacArthur was the only school on Long Island to be represented by two students. The Long Islanders went undefeated in the tournament, winning the Gold Medal with a victory over Hudson Valley.

Dan McDermott played 3rd base and was a Designated Hitter for the Long Island team. He played very well in the field, handling all of his chances without an error. At the plate he showed the form that brought him All-County honors during the school season. In the semi-final game against Western New York the Long Island squad was behind 3 to 2 in the 5 th inning when McDermott lined a single into centerfield to tie the score. He then went on to score the go ahead run and Long Island never looked back.

Steve McQuail played shortstop for the team, providing sharp defense and a potent bat. In the Gold Medal game, McQuail smashed an RBI single to right field in the 2 nd inning and an RBI double to left field in the 5 th inning.

When asked to describe the Games, Dan and Stephen said that it was “the greatest experience ever” and that the camaraderie of the Long Island players was intensified by the supportive crowds of family and friends. Dan was “thrilled” to make the team, and was duly proud that his semi-final game winning hit was a featured item on Channel 12 News. According to Stephen, the unity felt by the Nassau and Suffolk students as they faced the rest of the State helped to “pump up” the levels of play and enthusiasm. Both boys happily declared that new friendships were forged at Rochester, and looked forward to future competitions with their Empire Game teammates during their senior year at MacArthur, and hopefully well into the future. Congratulations Gold Medalists Dan McDermott and Stephen McQuail!

    Loss of a Legend
On Monday, the Levittown and High School baseball community lost a legend, Coach Doug Robins. The MacArthur Baseball Program would like to send our condolences to the Robins' family during this tough time.

Costello Earns 300th Win as Varsity Coach!
With the win on Saturday against Bellmore, Head Coach Steve Costello earned his 300th win as Varsity Coach. His career started in 1993 and has been one of tremendous success. As Head Coach, Coach Costello has led his teams to 11 League Championships, 7 County Finals Appearances, 2 County Championships, 1 Long Island Championship and 1 State Title. His success is attributed to Coach Costello's tremendous dedication to his players, doing whatever he can to help them become not only the best baseball players, but the best young men that they can be.

    Generals Clinch Conference Championship!
Congratulations to the Mac Arthur Generals for clinching their Conference Championship for the 11th time in the past 14 years. The Generals entered the week needing one win to nail down the title, but the Carey SeaHawks made the Generals work right down to the last game of the series. On Saturday Kevin Ryan went to the mound in a must win game and held Carey down as Mac Arthur built a 3 to 0 lead into the 4th inning. The Seahawks then struck for 4 runs to take the lead. Mac Arthur answered right back with 2 runs to take a 5 to 4 lead, then tacked on a run to make it 6 to 4. In the 6th inning Tyler Savin came on in relief when the SeaHawks were threatening to take the lead. The Generals weathered the storm and held on for a hard fought 6 to 5 victory. Dan McDermott had 3 hits and scored 3 runs, and Jake Rosenthal added 2 hits and 2 runs batted in. Mac Arthur enters the playoffs as the 2nd seeded team in the Nassau County playoffs.

    Generals Honored at County Dinner!
The Nassau County Baseball Association held their 2006 Awards Ceremony at the Marriot Hotel in Uniondale this year. Many awards were given out during the night and many people received special honors. Included were 7 MacArthur baseball players. Senior Rob Vitale and Junior Dan McDermott were selected as 2006 All-County Players. They became the 43rd and 44th MacArthur Baseball player to be given such an honor and it is the 18th time that more than one General has received the award in the same season. Along with Rob and Dan, Greg DePalma and Kevin Ryan received All-Conference Selections. Chris McCabe, Steve McQuail and Matt Mege were also honored as All-League selections. The Coaching Staff and MacArthur High School would like to congratulate all the award winners for being recognized for their accomplishments.

Generals March Into Nassau County Championships
The Mac Arthur Generals varsity baseball team stormed through the playoffs, winning 4 straight games to earn a spot in the Nassau County Championships. The Generals drew Farmingdale in the first round of the playoffs, and won a hard-fought game by a 7 to 3 score. Steve McQuail took the mound and allowed only 5 hits while striking out 11 batters. On offense Dan McDermott led the way with 3 hits and 3 RBI's. Chris McCabe and Mike Gattus added 2 hits each, and Greg DePalma had 2 RBI's.

In the 2nd round of the playoffs Mac Arthur drew the top-seeded team in their bracket, the Syosset Braves. This was an excellent game, with both teams facing elimination with a loss. Matt Mege pitched for Mac Arthur, allowing only 2 earned runs as the Generals won 6 to 3. Juniors Mike Gattus and Chris D'Arpa fueled the offense, as each player had 2 hits and 2 RBI's. Gattus had a 2 out 2 RBI single in the top of the 7th inning to provide Mac Arthur with much needed insurance runs. The Braves fought valiantly to load the bases in the bottom of the 7th, but Matt Mege induced a ground out to end the game and send the Generals to round 3 of the playoffs.

In round 3 Mac Arthur drew the hard-hitting Mepham Pirates. The Pirates had swept the Generals to win the league last week, so Mac Arthur knew they would have their hands full. Mepham took a 1st inning 2 to 0 lead on a home run by thier outstanding designated hitter Mike Acri. The Generals scored 1 in the 3rd inning when Chris McCabe drove in Dan McDermott. In the 4th inning the Generals broke out for 5 runs, keyed by RBI hits from Dan McDermott and Steve McQuail, and a bases loaded walk to Tom Walczyk. This gave Mac Arthur a 6 to 2 lead. Another run in the 6th inning, driven in by JJ Devitt, extended the lead to 7 to 2. On the mound Mike Anarumo had settled into a groove. He did not allow a run from the 1st inning to the 7th. In the 7th the Pirates threatened, scoring a solo run to cut the lead to 7 to 3. Anarumo finished strong to extend the Generals playoff run.

In round 4 Mac Arthur would have to travel to Mepham again, with the winner earning a spot in the Nassau Finals. Both teams would send thier aces to the mound, but this day belonged to the hitters. Mac Arthur came out strong, scoring 2 1st inning runs and 5 in the 2nd. The always gritty Pirates bounced back to score single runs in the 2nd and 3rd to cut the score to 7 to 2. The Generals knew that Mepham would fight hard to get back in this game. A Steve McQuail 3 run homer in the 4th inning extended the Mac Arthur lead to 10 to 2. 2 more runs in that inning made it 12 to 2. The Pirates stormed back with 4 runs in the 5th to cut the lead to 12 to 6. In both the 6th and 7th innings Mac Arthur added 3 runs, to extend the lead to 18 to 6. Steve McQuail pitched a gutty game, and gave way to Tyler Savin who pitched a scoreless 7th inning. Mac Arthur pounded out 19 hits in this contest, 2 each from the bats of Dan McDermott, JJ Devitt, Greg DePalma, Matt Mege, and Tom Walczyk. Kevin Ryan had 3 hits, including a 2-run home run. Steve McQuail exploded for 5 hits in 5 at bats, driving in 6 runs. These RBI's gave Steve 40 for the season, breaking the Generals season record for RBI's.

It was a remarkable run through the playoffs, allowing Mac Arthur to go to the finals for a mind-boggling 11th time in the past 21 seasons. The Championships begin on Tuesday at 4:30 at Farmingdale State College. Mac Arthur's opponents will be the Massapequa Chiefs.

Generals Storm Back in Northeast Elite Tourney Opener
In one of the wildest games in Mac Arthur baseball history, the Generals stormed back from a 12 to 5 deficit to edge the 12th ranked team in New Jersey, St. Joseph's, by a score of 14 to 13. Things did not look good for the Generals in the tournament opener, featuring 8 of the best teams in the Northeast. St. Joe's had their hitting shoes on, seemingly taking an insurmountable lead of 7 runs with only 2 innings left to play. But Mac Arthur took advantage of some timely hitting and the wildness of the St. Joe's hurlers to score 5 runs in the bottom of the 6th to cut the lead to 1 run. Now the key was for Justin Moore, the 3rd Mac Arthur pitcher, to hold the powerful St. Joe's offense at bay. In his first varsity appearance, Justin was up to the task. He held the deficit at 1 run, and then the Generals went to work. Chris McCabe worked a walk, and then advanced to 2nd base on a wild pitch. Now, with 1 out, Steve McQuail singled up the middle to send McCabe home with the tying run. Greg DePalma worked out a crucial walk, and Kevin Ryan was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Mike Gattus. Gattus rocketed a ground ball past the 3rd baseman, and the Generals had an improbable, gutty victory. This win was a testament to the never say die attitude of the Mac Arthur players. Sixteen different players entered the game for Mac Arthur, and each played a role in the victory. JJ Devitt had 2 hits and 4 RBI's, including a bases clearing double in the 4th inning. Steve McQuail had 3 hits and 2 RBI's, and Mike Gattus had 2 hits and 2 RBI's. Justin Moore's 2 innings of outstanding relief earned him the victory. Mac Arthur now has 10 wins and 2 losses on the season.

    Generals Storm into First Place
Mac Arthur entered this week tied with Herricks, as both teams had identical records of 5 wins and 1 loss. This guaranteed that the winner of this series would gain a huge advantage in the highly competitive Conference AA III.
The first game of the series pitted the Herricks ace against Mac Arthur's Rob Vitale. The Generals fell behind and never got their offense rolling, as the Herricks right hander pitched an excellent game. Rob Vitale also pitched very well, but the Mac Arthur defense was sloppy and the Generals fell by a score of 11 to 1.
Now the Generals faced the daunting task of winning 2 games on the road against the powerful Highlanders. On Wednesday, Matt Mege took the mound looking to even the series. Mac Arthur scored 3 in the first inning, but Herricks was able to chip away at the lead. Entering the 5th inning the Generals were holding on to a 5 to 3 lead. The Mac Arthur offense then struck for 7 runs to put the game away. The final score was 15 to 4 and the Generals were now even at 1 and 1 in the series. Matt Mage did a great job of holding Herricks from a big inning, working around baserunners all game. Matt now has a record of 3 wins and 0 losses. On offense Dan McDermott, Chris McCabe, and Steve McQuail each had 3 hits. Jake Rosenthal, Greg DePalma, and JJ Devitt each had 2 hits. Mike Puka had 2 RBI and Kevin Ryan added a hit, a run, and 2 stolen bases.
This brought the Generals to the pivotal game 3. Kevin Ryan would take the mound. In the 1st inning Steve McQuail set the tone with a long home run to give Mac Arthur an early 1 to 0 lead. That would be all the offense Mac Arthur would need, as Kevin Ryan pitched a masterful 3 hit shutout. But more runs were coming from the potent Mac Arthur offense. A 4 run 4th inning was spurred by back to back RBI doubles by Kevin Ryan and Greg DePalma. The Generals added 4 more in the 5th inning, this time highlighted by a 2 run home run from Rob Vitale. Rob had 3 hits and 2 runs scored in the game. JJ Devitt had 3 RBI's.
This win gave the Generals the series win and a league record of 7 wins and 2 losses. Mac Arthur now has won all 3 league series, and controls their own destiny in the league.

    Generals Take Calhoun Series
The Generals did on Thursday what they do best - bounce back from adversity. After losing a slugfest on Wednesday at Calhoun, Mac Arthur went back to the home of the Colts and pounded out 16 runs to win the deciding game of the series 16 to 2. Matt Mege gave Mac Arthur exactly what was needed, a strong performance on the mound. Matt allowed only 1 earned run and 4 hits. On offense, 3 different Generals had 3 hits each. Dan McDermott was 3 for 5, JJ Devitt was 3 for 5, and Mike Gattus was 3 for 4. Steve McQuail and Matt Mege had 2 hits each. McQuail capped a terrific week, as he drove in 10 runs and went 7 for 12. This win gave Mac Arthur a league record of 8 and 3, good enough for 1st place in League AA III.

    Mac Arthur Pounds Elmont
The Generals ran their League AA III record to 13 wins and 2 losses with a series sweep of Elmont. All 3 games were lopsided victories over the Spartans. Every General contributed to the offensive explosion, but the highlight of the week took place on the mound. Senior pitcher Rob Vitale, pitching on Senior Day, threw Mac Arthur's first no-hitter in 9 years in the middle game of the series. Rob struck out 15 and walked none, with the only 2 Elmont baserunners reaching via error. This was a truly dominating performance.
Other Generals who excelled this week include James Sanacore who homered twice, Matt Mege who won his 5th game of the year without a loss, and Vito Cataldo who had 7 hits in 10 at bats.

    Mac Arthur Sweeps Bellmore JFK
The Generals continued to hold on to first place in Conference AA III with a sweep of the Bellmore JFK Cougars. In the first game the Generals scored early with 2 in the first, as Chris McCabe drove in Dan McDermott and Kevin Ryan drove in Chris McCabe. The Cougars answered with 2 in the 3rd to tie the score. From there the Mac Arthur bats took over. A run in the 3rd was followed by a 3 run 4th, a 3 run 5th, and a 2 run 6th inning. The final score was 11 to 4. Rob Vitale was the winning pitcher, striking out 7. Dan McDermott, Chris McCabe, and Kevin Ryan each had 3 hits and 2 RBI's. Steve McQuail, Jake Rosenthal, Rob Vitale, and Greg DePalma had 2 hits each. JJ Devitt had a hit and an RBI. Steve McQuail also pitched the 7th inning, striking out 2 batters.

In the 2nd game, Bellmore took an early 2 to 0 lead in the 1st inning. Amazingly, the Generals scored the next 23 runs, batting around in 5 different innings. Hitting stars included Greg DePalma, with 3 hits, and Steve McQuail, Rob Vitale, and Dan McDermott with 2 hits each. Joe Quiros, Mike Anarumo, Tom Walczyk, James Sanacore, Matt Mege, and Jason Gellman all added hits to the offense. Matt Mege won his 4th game of the year with no losses. Jason Gellman pitched the 7th inning.

The 3rd game would be the most competitive of the series. The teams exchanged leads, and Bellmore led 3 to 2 entering the bottom of the 6th inning. Jake Rosenthal worked out a walk to lead off the inning. An error in right field gave the Generals runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs. Kevin Ryan laid down a perfect bunt, and beat it out to load the bases. After a fine play by the Bellmore shortstop led to a force out at home, Greg DePalma was hit by a pitch to drive in the tying run. A balk led to the go ahead run. Dan McDermott then single in a run, and Chris McCabe doubled in 2 more to give Mac Arthur a 7 to 3 lead. Rob Vitale, who was on the mound in place of starter Kevin Ryan, sealed the victory with a scoreless 7th inning.

The Generals now have a league record of 10 wins and 2 losses.

Mac Arthur Takes First Game in Calhoun Series
Steve McQuail continued his mound dominance as the Generals took the opener of the Calhoun series by a 6 to 1 score. Coming off last week's perfect game, Steve McQuail allowed no earned runs, 4 hits, and struck out 11. Dan McDermott, Greg DePalma, and JJ Devitt all had 2 hits in the game. DePalma's triple and double made him the offensive star of the game. The Generals now have a record of 7 wins and 2 losses, good for first place in League AA III.

    McQuail Perfect in Series Opener
Steve McQuail was "Perfect" in the 9-0 win against Bellmore JFK today. McQuail had outstanding stuff as he pitched a complete game, striking out 13. This is the first perfect game since 1994 for the Generals. There were only two threats to McQuails perfect day, but outstanding defensive plays save the day. James Sanacore sprinted to the leftcenter gap and jumped to take away an extra base hit and then Dan McDermott made one of the finest plays anyone will ever see on a high school baseball field. In the 4th inning McDermott charged a slow roller, then barehanded it and made a strong throw to first base that was then picked by Mike Puka.

    GENERALS TAKE PLAYOFF OPENER
In a great game against a very good Port Washington team, the Generals prevailed 5 to 4. The Vikings jumped out to a quick 4 to 0 lead in the top of the 1st inning, putting the Generals in a hole. For the first 3 innings, the Vikings' pitcher kept the Mac Arthur bats off balance, mixing breaking pitches and fastballs effectively. In the bottom of the 4th inning the Generals broke through. As has been so often the case this year, Alex Angus started things off with a single. Chris Piperno and Frankie Vanderka singled as well, giving the Generals their first run. Mike Scro hit a screaming line drive to left field for a sacrifice fly, cutting the deficit to 4 to 2. In the 5th the Genereral went to work again. With 2 outs, Alex Angus doubled, and consecutive hits by Chris Piperno, Frankie Vanderka, and Mike Scro put the Generals within 1 run with the bases loaded and Anthony Mazzella coming to the plate. Anthony singled up the middle, scoring 2 runs and giving the Generals a slim 5 to 4 lead. The rest was up to John Krause, the Mac Arthur pitcher. After the rough 1st inning John was outstanding, and now he had a lead for the first time. A Port Washington rally in the 6th was stopped when Sal Sanquini started a nifty 3rd to 1st double play. In the 7th Krause was at his best, getting a comebacker and 2 strike outs to seal the win.
Tomorrow is game 2 of the series, to be played at 4:30 at Guggenheim Elementary School in Port Washington.

    MAC ARTHUR COMPLETES SWEEP
The Generals played another thrilling game against the Massapequa Chiefs yesterday, winning 4 to 3 on a Chris Piperno double in the bottom of the 7th inning. Mac Arthur took a 3 to 0 lead with 2 runs in the 2nd and 1 run in the 3rd inning. Frankie Vanderka had doubles in both innings, and Mike Scro had a single and a triple in those frames. Frankie was on the mound, cruising through the first 4 innings. The Chiefs threatened by loading the bases in the 5th inning, but a key strikeout got Mac Arthur out of that jam. In the 6th the Chiefs tied the score on a long home run, then threatened again in the top of the 7th inning. With runners on 1st and 2nd, a bunt was popped up in front of home plate. Catcher Chris Piperno dived out and made a great catch, then threw to 2nd for a double play. With the score still tied in the bottom of the 7th, the Generals went to bat. Alex Angus singled with 1 out, and Chris Piperno then drilled a long double into the gap. Alex raced home with the winning run. This win allowed the Generals to remain undefeated in league play, and locked up the number 1 seed in the playoffs.

    Generals Reign in the Rain
Mother Nature was the story this week, as the Generals played only 3 of 5 scheduled games. On Wednesday a break in the rain allowed Mac Arthur to travel to Oceanside to face the surging Sailors, winners of 11 of thier 13 games this year. This formidable task was made more difficult because the Generals were facing the Oceanside ace who was undefeated and had allowed no earned runs on the year. The Sailors scored 4 runs in the 1st, making the odds even greater. Kris Walters was on the mound for Mac Arthur, and his outstanding performance gave the Generals a chance. He pitched 4 shutout innings after Oceanside took a 5 to 2 lead in the 2nd inning. It stayed that way to the 7th inning, until the Generals strung together 5 straight hits to tie the score. Darkness ended the game, as the Generals recorded thier 2nd tie in 3 games.

On Friday the Sailors came to Levittown to play Mac Arthur. The Generals were clicking on all cylinders in this one, scoring 2 1st inning runs on a Chris Piperno laser over the right field fence. These would be all the runs Frankie Vanderka would need, as he pitched a complete game shutout. But the Generals provided plenty more offense anyway, eventually winning 11 to 0. Anthony Mazzella hit a Grand Slam to cap the scoring. Vanderka struck out 10 batters while allowing only 4 hits.

On Saturday afternoon Mac Arthur finally had a chance to finish thier series with Syosset. Another 1st inning home run - this time a 3-run bomb from Mike Scro - staked the Generals to an early lead. This opened the floodgates and the potent Mac Arthur offense put up 17 runs to cruise to a 17 to 1 victory. Alex Angus. Nick McQuail, Mike Scro, John Krause, and Sal Sanquini all had multi-hit games. Mario Angieri and Matt Plotkin had back to back doubles in the 6th inning for Mac Arthur. John Krause won his 5th game of the year, and Josh Barry and Jack Garren added scoreless innings. The Generals are now the only Nassau County team undefeated in league play.
