SEASON DRAWS NEAR FOR NORTH DUFFERIN BASEBALL LEAGUE

The North Dufferin Baseball League and member clubs are busy preparing for the upcoming season, which is scheduled to begin May 2.

A complement of 17 teams will make up the N.D.B.L. this year, including a second Bolton senior team and an Orillia junior team. The East and West Divisional format will be continued with Aurora Jays, Barrie Red Sox 'A', Barrie Red Sox 'B', Bolton 'A' Brewers, Bolton 'B' Braves, Midland Indians and Orillia Majors in the East, while the West Division will comprise of Angus Black Sox, Clearview Orioles, Creemore Braves, Ivy Leafs, Lisle Astros, Mansfield Cubs, and New Lowell Knights. The League will also run with a three team Junior Division including Bolton Braves, Midland Twins and Orillia Royals. Each team will play a 22 game schedule.

The complete schedule was released on the North Dufferin League website last week, and also features the Lisle Astros annual tournament on the Victoria Day weekend, the League's Annual All-Star Game schedule for July 5 at Lisle and the New Lowell Knights tournament on the Civic Holiday weekend.

The Executive for 2009 consists of President Allan Brownridge of New Lowell, Vice President Peter Kinghan of Creemore, Past President Myles Morrish of Creemore, Secretary Scott Anderson of Lisle and Treasurer Dan Gowan of Creemore.

IVY AND CREEMORE START NORTH DUFFERIN BALL SEASON

May 4, 2009

The Ivy Leafs and the Creemore Braves played the first game of the North Dufferin Baseball League's 2009 season at Ivy on Saturday.

Before the game, the Ivy Leafs Baseball Club honoured one of their own, Victor Hayward, for his contribution to the Leafs' organisation over the years. Hayward has been instrumental with Ivy baseball holding manager or coaching positions on both minor and senior teams. He continues to be a spectator, attending as many games as he can.

Long time friend, Wes Prosser, acted as Master of Ceremonies during the pre-game presentation to Hayward and only had kind words. Prosser particularly noted Hayward's loyalty to the Leafs, "wherever the Leafs have gone, wherever they're going to go, you're never surprised to see Vic there."

The Leafs' organisation presented a commemorative picture of Hayward and his two sons, Sean and Chris, when the Leafs' won the 2001 Ontario Baseball 'B' championship. Sean who plays for Ivy and Chris who now plays for Creemore were on hand to present their father a split-designed jersey featuring both the Leafs and Braves uniform.

Braves Down Leafs

After the pre-game presentation the two teams took to the diamond, where the Braves won with a 7-2 decision over the Leafs. Creemore's victory was largely due to one player - Todd Gowan.

Gowan received a win as the pitcher over the seven innings, giving up four hits, walking two batsmen and striking out six. Gowan also did his share of the scoring, going three for three with one walk. All three of his hits were homeruns with his first during the third inning as a grand slam, followed by a two run homer in the fifth and a solo homerun in the seventh frame.

Creemore's Jeff Akitt had two singles with both Sean Ellis and Jason Thompson hitting singles. For the Leafs, runs were scored by John McNabb and Rich Freeman. Newcomer Bryan McLeod joined veteran players Jeremy Uylenbroek, Sean O'Brien and Rob Roy on the scorecard with recorded singles.

League games continued on Sunday with Clearview defeating Angus 7-2, Orillia Jr. outscoring Midland Jr. 11-2, Orillia Sr. over Aurora with an 8-7 decision and New Lowell defeating Bolton Jr. 8-1. Mansfield and Lisle postponed their game due to field conditions at Lisle.

NORTH DUFFERIN BASEBALL LEAGUE PRESIDENTS' TO MARK 80 YEARS

The 2009 season of the North Dufferin Baseball League marks 80 years of operation.

To celebrate, a Presidents' Reunion is planned for July 5 at Lisle. Invitations are being sent to all known past Presidents, however, due to poor records of Executive members during the League's early years, particularly the 1950s and 60s, organisers need assistance in finding names. If anyone recalls or served as president during those years, please contact Scott Anderson at (705) 424-0769 or by email at reunion@ndbl.ca.

The Presidents' Reunion will coincide with the League's All-Star Game at Lisle on July 5. The League will also celebrate this milestone at their Annual Awards Night, currently scheduled for August.

LOCAL TEAMS PLAY-OFF FOR SPOT AT ALL ONTARIO

June 09, 2009

Senior teams in the North Dufferin Baseball League will take a break from regular season action this weekend to participate in tournaments to decide which teams will represent the League at All Ontario's in September.

Two double-knockout elimination tournaments will be held, one at Creemore and one at Lisle. The Creemore location will have three teams competing for the 'C' classification. The Ivy Leafs and the Barrie Red Sox 'A' will play the first game Saturday at 9 a.m. The Creemore Braves and the winner between Ivy and Barrie will play the next game at 12 noon.

Another game will be played Saturday afternoon at three o'clock with at least one game on Sunday.

The 'D' classification tournament is hosted by Lisle. A total of eight teams will compete including host Lisle Astros, Angus Black Sox, Aurora Jays, Bolton 'A' Brewers, Bolton 'B' Braves, Mansfield Cubs, and Midland Indians.

Four games will be played on Friday night at various parks around the League. Mansfield and Clearview play at 6 p.m. at New Lowell, Bolton A will host Midland at 6:30 p.m. as will Bolton 'B' with Lisle at 8:30 p.m. Angus will play at Aurora at 8:30 p.m.

Games will resume Saturday morning at eight at both Lisle and New Lowell parks. Sunday games will be at Lisle only.

The New Lowell Knights were the only team to apply for the 'B' classification and therefore will play at Kendal during the Labour Day weekend. The Orillia Majors were granted the right to host the 'C' classification tournament from Baseball Ontario, and as host, automatically enters the tournament.

NEW LOWELL, CREEMORE, AND BOLTON TO PLAY AT ALL ONTARIO

June 15, 2009

The New Lowell Knights, Creemore Braves, and the Bolton 'A' Brewers will be heading to Baseball Ontario Playoffs on the Labour Day weekend, after the North Dufferin Baseball League's elimination tournaments on the weekend.

New Lowell was the only team to apply from the League for the 'B' Classification and will head to Kendal.

The 'C' Classification had three teams apply with Barrie Red Sox 'A', Creemore Braves, and Ivy Leafs. Creemore hosted the elimination tournament where Barrie was eliminated with two loses in their first two games. Creemore lost against Ivy, who was 2-0 after play on Saturday.

On Sunday, Ivy and Creemore faced off with Creemore pulling out a 7-6 victory and created a sudden-death deciding game. In the second game Creemore handily defeated Ivy 6-1. Creemore will attend the 'C' Classification tournament during the Labour Day weekend at Orillia.

The final tournament of the weekend was for the 'D' Classification, where eight teams took part. On Friday night, four games were played around the League, with Angus Black Sox losing to Aurora Jays 5-6, Lisle Astros defeating Bolton 'B' Braves 5-0, Mansfield Cubs outscored by Clearview Orioles 11-2 and Midland Indians losing 5-12 against Bolton 'A' Brewers.

Play continued Saturday morning at Lisle and New Lowell parks where both Angus and Mansfield lost in their second games and were eliminated. Angus lost to Bolton 'B' 7-6 while Midland defeated Mansfield 7-3. Lisle beat Aurora 5-4 while Bolton 'A' outscored Clearview 19-6.

Round three action had Bolton 'B' losing to Midland 4-2, which eliminated them from the tournament as was Aurora when they lost 11-1 against Clearview. Four teams remained for Sunday with Bolton 'A' meeting up with Clearview and Lisle against Midland. Bolton beat Clearview 6-5 to put them in the finals undefeated, and Lisle won 7-3 over Midland to face Bolton. In that game, Bolton defeated Lisle with a 7-3 decision. Bolton will play at Forest in September.

ALL-STAR GAME IN LISLE SUNDAY

June 29, 2009

The All-Stars of the North Dufferin Baseball League will be in Lisle on Sunday when the Annual All-Star Game gets underway. The nine inning contest starts at 1 p.m. at Lisle's Ross Houston Memorial Park.

The game will feature the East Stars versus the West Stars. Players on the East team are Ian Milne and Ryan Lewis from Aurora, Matt Bylow, Matt Sellers and Brian Moore from Barrie 'A', Adam Lentz, Lawrence Vera, Darin Goodale from Barrie 'B', Mike Blackwood, John Hutchinson, Adam Wallace from Bolton 'A', Brett Chater and Ryan Regent from Bolton 'B', Liam Bryant and Pete Flood from Midland seniors, Mike Fitzgerald, Mark Obee, Rob Townes from Orillia seniors, Taylor Pratt and Wes Van Luven from Orillia juniors.

The line-up for the West team includes Travis Hall, Kevin Khan and Pat Warden from Angus, Corey Ramirez and Sean Abram from Clearview, Rob Perkins, Bryan Post, Jason Thompson from Creemore, Kevin Dummond, John McNabb, Brett Elliott from Ivy, Shane Walker and Ryan Tobin from Lisle, Devon Caldwell and Jesse Ragazzon from Mansfield, Chad Purchase, Steve Baldry, Jason Seeler from New Lowell, Alex MacDonald and Sean Boylen from Midland juniors.

FORMER PRESIDENTS CELEBRATE 80 YEARS OF BASEBALL

July 7, 2009

A reunion like no other was held Sunday, when former presidents and long serving executive members of the North Dufferin Baseball League gathered in Lisle.

Former presidents, Bill Irwin and Jim Shacklady, initiated the idea of such a reunion and Bud Anderson assembled a committee of former presidents, Tom Anderson, Gord Dunn, Myles Morrish and current Secretary of the League, Scott Anderson to plan the event. The reunion coincided with the League's Annual All-Star Game in Lisle and with the eightieth year of the League.

The former members and their guests were treated to lunch at the Lisle Community Hall where there was a display of old uniforms, some dating back from the 1940s, photos and other memorabilia from the League's 80 years. The Presidents were also welcomed and recognised during the All-Star Game.

East Wins All-Star Game

The East Division Stars of the North Dufferin Baseball League took an easy 10-3 victory over the West Division Stars during the Annual All-Star Game in Lisle on Sunday.

The nine-inning contest got underway at 1 p.m. at Lisle's Ross Houston Memorial Park. The East took the lead in the game when they scored four runs in the second inning. The West answered back in their half of the second with one run. The East would score another three in the third, two in the fifth, and finished with one in the seventh inning. The West would score two more in the third and one in the ninth inning.

Most Valuable Players of the game were John McNabb of Ivy for the West and Brett Chater of Bolton 'B' for the East. McNabb pitched two innings, giving up one run on two hits and walked two batsmen. Chater went four for six including a grand slam home run and played well defensively.

REGULAR SEASON ENDS; PLAYOFFS BEGIN

The North Dufferin Baseball League's regular season ended last week with eight senior teams and three junior teams advancing to playoffs, which begin tonight (Tuesday, August 4).

In the Senior East Division, Barrie Red Sox 'B' took top spot with a 15 win, 7 loss record and will face the fourth place, Barrie Red Sox 'A' who ended the season with 12 wins, 8 losses and 2 ties. Aurora Jays finished second with a 14 win, 6 loss, and 2 tie record and will play against Bolton 'A' Brewers who finished in third spot with a 13 wins, 8 losses, and 1 tie standing.

The Senior West Division will have match-ups between Creemore Braves and Clearview Orioles. Creemore finished with 19 wins and 3 losses, good for first place, while Clearview ended the season in fourth place with a standing of 12 wins, 9 losses and 1 tie. Angus Black Sox finished second with 15 wins, 4 losses and 3 ties and will face third place New Lowell Knights who finished with a 14 win, 8 loss record.

The first series will be a best of five games or six points and will be completed on August 14, with the second round beginning the day after.

In the Junior Division, Orillia Royals finished the season with 7 wins, 14 losses and 1 tie to take first place, followed by Bolton Braves who finished second with 6 wins, 15 losses and 1 tie. The Midland Twins finished third and had a 4 win, 16 loss, and 2 tie record. The three teams will play a home and home series with the top two teams advancing to the finals. Games have been set for this week with the series scheduled to end on Sunday. The Championship series will start next week.

BOLTON AND MIDLAND IN JUNIOR FINAL

August 10, 2009

The Bolton Braves and Midland Twins juniors of the North Dufferin Baseball League advanced to the Championship Series over the weekend after a surprised forfeit by the Orillia Royals.

Three concluding games of the first round of playoffs were to be played Sunday, however the Orillia team was unable to field nine players and forfeited their game to Bolton. This was Orillia's second forfeit of the season and as outlined under N.D.B.L. rules are suspended from League play.

As a result of the forfeit, Bolton and Midland will compete for the Junior Championship.

The first game was played late Sunday with Bolton defeating Midland 7-1. A tentative schedule has been set with Midland at Bolton on Tuesday, the third game in Midland on Thursday and a fourth and fifth game, if necessary, back in Bolton on Sunday.

NDBL AWARDS NIGHT AUGUST 22

August 17, 2009

The Annual Awards Night of the North Dufferin Baseball League will be held Saturday (August 22) at the Lisle Legion.

The event starts at 8 p.m. with a happy hour, followed by music from 9 p.m. until 1 a.m. Awards will be presented at 10 p.m.

Trophies to recognise player accomplishments in the regular season, include Best Pitcher, Best Batter, Most Sportsmanlike Player and Most Valuable Player, to name a few.

As part of the event, memorabilia from past years will be on display in connection with the 80th year of the League.

There is no admission for the event and past and present players and fans are invited to attend.

BOLTON NDBL JUNIOR CHAMPS

August 17, 2009

The Bolton Braves are the 2009 North Dufferin Baseball League Junior Division Champions after defeating the Midland Twins three games to none with one game ending in a tie.

The series started August 9, with Bolton taking a 7-1 victory, followed by game two on Tuesday with another Bolton victory by a 5-2 score. Game three was played on Thursday, however, due to the playing lights failing, the game was suspended and concluded prior to game four Sunday. The game resulted in a 4-4 tie. Game four resulted in a 3-1 decision for Bolton, giving them the championship.

League Secretary, Scott Anderson congratulated Bolton on their victory and presented them a championship cup.

Senior Division Semi-Finals

The Senior Division of the North Dufferin Baseball League has advanced to the second round of the post-season.

The two series started over the weekend, with the Bolton 'A' Brewers taking on the Creemore Braves and New Lowell Knights facing Barrie Red Sox 'B'.

Creemore won the first game on Saturday with a 10-4 decision while Barrie 'B' defeated New Lowell 3-1 on Sunday night. Both series have their second game on Tuesday night.

BARRIE AND BOLTON PLAY WELL AT PROVINCIALS

August 24, 2009

The Junior Ontario Baseball Championships were held over the weekend with the Barrie Red Sox 'B' and Bolton Braves teams of the North Dufferin Baseball League participating.

Barrie, who plays in the senior division of the NDBL this season, is made up of mostly junior aged players and decided to compete for the junior 'B' classification, which was held in Chatham.

With the sudden drop-out of the team from Oakville, the tournament structure was changed with the four remaining teams playing a round robin series followed by two semi-final games and then the championship game.

Barrie advanced to a semi-final game after beating Chatham 11-5, Hamilton 6-1 and Milton 8-6. They faced Milton, who at that point had only tied one game, in the semi-final, however a few Barrie errors during the game resulted in a 5-3 loss which advanced Milton to the finals. Milton and Hamilton would face off in the championship game with Milton pulling out a 7-0 victory to win the title.

In the junior 'D' classification, held in Wallaceburg, the Bolton Braves made it to the championship game and lost to the tough St. Thomas team 13-3.

In round robin play, Bolton had defeated Kincardine twice 13-6 and 12-5 and lost to St. Thomas in their third game 14-2.

Meanwhile, the senior division of the N.D.B.L. will be competing the second round this week. The series between the Creemore Braves and the Bolton 'A' Brewers ended Saturday with a Bolton winning the series 3-1.

The second series is between the Barrie Red Sox 'B' and New Lowell Knights, which took a break over the weekend due to Barrie's involvement in the Junior Provincials. The series will be completed by the end of the week, with the championship series beginning on the weekend.

CARRUTHERS HONOURED WITH 'PRESIDENT'S AWARD'

August 24, 2009

The North Dufferin Baseball League held its annual Awards Night and Dance on Saturday night at the Lisle Legion with Secretary and Statistician Scott Anderson acting as Master of Ceremonies. He was joined by his colleagues, President Allan Brownridge, Vice President Pete Kinghan, Past President Myles Morrish, and Treasurer Dan Gowan in the presentation of regular season awards.

There were two special presentations made during the evening, including a plaque of recognition to Dan Gowan, who has served as treasurer for 25 years. The second presentation was the President's Award to Paul Carruthers. Carruthers is only the sixth person to be awarded this esteemed honour since the award was created in 1984.

Carruthers has served on the executive, as President for four terms and York-Simcoe Representative for 16 years. He has also coached minor and senior baseball in Stayner and area, plays for the Dufferin-Simcoe Rockers Oldtimers team and is currently the President of the Canadian National Oldtimers Baseball Federation.

After receiving the award, Carruthers noted it is not for rewards to get involved. Rather, he said it is "to help baseball - keep baseball alive - do whatever you have to for your different teams, your different towns and the organisation."

Other awards included a commemorative plaque to outgoing Past President Morrish for his three-year term on the executive and the Most Valuable Player awards from the League All-Star Game on July 5 were presented to Brett Chater of the Bolton 'B' Braves and John McNabb of the Ivy Leafs.

Team awards went to the Orillia Royals juniors for a first place finish in the regular season with seven wins and 14 losses and one tie record. In the Senior East division Barrie Red Sox 'B' finished the season with 15 wins and seven losses for the top spot, and the Creemore Braves finished first in the Senior West division with a 19 win and three loss record.

Senior Awards

Individual awards included the Creemore Star Trophy for the Best Batter, which was awarded to Mike Wallace of the Bolton 'A' Brewers with an average of .510. Wallace would also walk away with the Bob Doner Memorial Trophy for the Best on Base Percentage with a percentage of .657 and the Evan Jamieson Memorial Trophy for most runs scored. Wallace shared this award with Brett Chater of the Bolton 'B' Braves in scoring 23 runs.

Creemore Brave Todd Gowan was the recipient of the Bill Lennox Memorial Trophy for most home runs. Gowan had eight in the regular season. Brad Grieveson, also of Creemore was awarded the Lloyd Patton and Bill Gowan Memorial Trophy as the Best Pitcher for the fourth consecutive year. Bill Patton on behalf of the families made the presentation.

The final three awards in the senior division were voted on by teams. The Carl Gowan Memorial Trophy for the Best Catcher was awarded to Todd Patton of the New Lowell Knights. Jesse Ragazzon of the Mansfield Cubs was the recipient of the Past President's Trophy as the Most Sportsmanlike Player and the Bruce Jenkins Memorial Trophy was awarded to Todd Gowan as the Most Valuable Player.

Junior Awards

In the junior division two players, Jordon Albaum of Bolton Braves and Craig Speers of Midland Twins received the Reg Westbrooke Memorial Trophy as the Best Batter with averages of .327. Albaum would also receive the trophy for the Best on Base Percentage with a percentage of .455 and walk away with two other awards including the Vice President's Trophy for the Most Sportsmanlike Player and the Statistician's Trophy as the Most Valuable Player as decided by junior team votes.

The most runs scored award was to Orillia Royals' Corey Halbert with 14 with his team mate, Wes Van Luven the recipient of the Best Pitcher trophy. The Most Home Run award was given to three Midland players, who had one home run a piece this year, including Speers, Alex MacDonald, and Greg Wilkey.

PROVINCIAL BASEBALL FOR NDBL TEAMS

Local senior baseball teams will see action this weekend when six North Dufferin League squads head to Ontario Baseball Association Championship Tournaments.

The New Lowell Knights are attending the 'B' classification tournament held in Kendal. The Knights will face Woodslee in their first game on Friday at 8 p.m. and will play their second game on Saturday at either 8:30 a.m. or 11 a.m. depending on the outcome of the first. The tournament has a total of ten teams participating.

The 'C' classification tournament will be held locally in Orillia with three league teams taking part. The Orillia Majors, as host, automatically enters a team, as has the Creemore Braves and Ivy Leafs.

The Braves and Leafs will meet in their fist game scheduled for 5:30 Friday evening, with both teams, as winner or loser, playing their second game at 8 a.m. on Saturday.

Orillia will play Amherstburg at 8:30 p.m. Friday with their second game, win or lose, at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. A total of nine teams have entered the tournament.

The Bolton Brewers and the Lisle Astros will join 19 other teams at the 'D' classification tournament being held in London. Bolton plays Thorold Fanthoms at 5:30 p.m. on Friday with Lisle playing at 8 p.m. against the Thorold Mariners.

The Astros will play at 1 p.m. Saturday regardless of a win or loss, while the Brewers will play Saturday at 10 a.m. if they lose or 1 p.m. if they win their first game.

NDBL Championship Series

The New Lowell Knights recently defeated the Barrie Red Sox 'B' in semi-final action of the NDBL playoffs. New Lowell won the fifth and deciding game Thursday taking the series three games to two. New Lowell will meet the Bolton 'A' Brewers in the Championship Series.

Bolton defeated the Creemore Braves on August 22 taking the series three games to one and ended the Braves quest for their fifth straight title. This is Bolton's first appearance in the finals since joining the league in 2004.

The first game was scheduled for Sunday, but due to rain, the game was postponed. The first game will now be played on September 12, as both New Lowell and Bolton will be at OBA play this weekend. Games are played on weekends during the finals.

BOLTON BREWERS WIN O.B.A. SENIOR 'D' CHAMPIONSHIP

September 11, 2009

Over the Labour Day weekend select teams from the North Dufferin Baseball League travelled to Ontario Baseball Association Championship Tournaments.

The New Lowell Knights travelled to Kendal for the 'B' classification tournament consisting of ten teams. New Lowell would play three games, winning their first 3-2 over Woodslee and losing their next two games to Kendal 5-0 and Exeter 8-1, eliminating them from tournament play. Kendal went on to win the Senior 'B' championship.

At the 'C' classification tournament held at Orillia, three league teams, Orillia Majors, Creemore Braves and Ivy Leafs played off against five other teams from across the province. A team from Niagara Falls dropped out of the tournament at the last minute, which resulted in the schedule being revised. Host Orillia played three games winning their first against West Niagara 6-4 but lost the next two to league teams Ivy 8-5 and Creemore 3-2. Ivy, who was undefeated after three games, winning games over St. Thomas 9-2, Orillia 8-5, Port Hope 5-2 went into play Sunday and dropped two games to Creemore 7-3 and 11-1. Creemore made it to the final game against Port Hope, who they had lost to earlier in the tournament 4-2, and again were unable to make any gains and lost the championship game 3-0. Creemore had defeated Amherstburg 8-0, Orillia 3-2, Ivy 7-3 and 11-1 to make the finals.

The Bolton Brewers and Lisle Astros participated in a 21 team Senior 'D' tournament held at London. The Astros lost their first game to Thorold Mariners 3-0, won their second game 8-5 over London Dodgers and were knocked out of tournament play with a loss to Fort Erie 8-6. The Brewers played extremely well over the four day tournament going 7-0 to win their first O.B.A. Senior 'D' Championship. Their games included wins over Thorold Fantoms 11-7, Mitchell 7-6, Wyoming 3-2, Corunna 8-1, Leamington 3-1, Mitchell 5-2 and tournament finalists Leamington 2-0.

BREWERS SWEEP KNIGHTS IN FOUR GAMES

September 21, 2009

The Bolton Brewers won their first North Dufferin Baseball League title on Sunday when they overpowered the New Lowell Knights 7-3, to win the finals in four straight games. This was Bolton's first appearance in the championship series since joining the league in 2004.

The championship series began September 12 in New Lowell with Bolton pulling out an impressive 10-6 victory. Their winning streak continued in the second game on September 13 with a 6-2 win followed by the September 19 win of 5-2.

In game four, the early innings were uneventful until New Lowell's Todd Patton doubled and scored on a sacrifice bunt by John Patterson in the third. Bolton would immediately answer back with a lead off home run by Matt Blacklaws tying the game at one. In the fourth inning the Knights plated two more runs with Brandon Norrie and Ryan Martin scoring, but Bolton answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning, while batting through their line-up. The Brewers never looked back scoring a run in each the fifth and sixth innings, including a home run by John Hutchinson to win the game 7-3 and their first N.D.B.L. championship.

In a post-game presentation, league past president Myles Morrish presented Mike Wallace and Eric Cirone the Strother Cup and congratulated them on their strong play.

The Brewers had advanced to the finals by defeating the Aurora Jays in the first round and 2008 league champions Creemore Braves in the second. The Knights won their first series over Angus Black Sox and defeated Barrie Red Sox 'B' in the second round to make the finals.
