Pupa Signs with WVU Tech
August 1, 2005 --
Infielder/pitcher Jensen Pupa signed a National Letter of Intent to play baseball with Division II West Virginia Tech (WVU Tech) on Sunday, July 31. The 2005 graduate of Northwest High School will enroll in WVU Tech in the fall. Golden Bears coach Tim Epling plans to use Pupa as both an infielder and a pitcher.
WVU Tech, located in Montgomery, West Virginia, just south of Charleston, plays in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC). Last season the Golden Bears finished third in the WVIAC Southern Division, posting a 7-5 mark in the division and a 17-21 record overall.
Prior to the 2005 season, Pupa was selected to the Pre Season All State Team by the Maryland State Association of Baseball Coaches. The same group selected him to play in the Brooks Robinson Classic state all-star baseball game held at Oriole Park at Camden Yards on July 10. He was named Honorable Mention All-Met by the Washington Post following both his junior and senior seasons. Other post season honors included being named to the All-Area team by the Examiner in 2005, first team All-County by the Gazette and Journal newspapers in 2004, and All League by the county coaches following both the 2004 and 2005 seasons.
While at Northwest Pupa set several single-season and career records for the school. His 13 wins, 130 strike outs, and 147 innings pitched are all career bests for the Jaguars, as are his seven career homers and 66 RBI’s. Pupa also holds single-season NWHS records for runs scored, home runs, doubles, wins, strike outs, ERA, and innings pitched.
Pupa was also a key figure for Gaithersburg Post 295’s back-to-back state titles won in 2003 and 2004. He was selected the state tournament’s top player and pitcher in the 2004 tournament.
Pupa’s final 2005 statistics can be found by clicking on Teams/Roster to the left of this page.

Summer Season Over
July 25, 2005 --
The summer season for the Germantown Jaguars in the MCBA U-18 A Divison has come to an end. While we certainly would have liked to have won more games, a tremendous amount was accomplished during the summer season. Several players showed that they can be key contributors for the 2006 season. Those players that made the vast majority of games gained valuable experience that cannot be duplicated in practice or against weaker competition. The NWHS coaching staff will meet with Coach White in the near future to get his input on the summer season. Coach Noble will once again hold individual meetings in September and October with all returning players.
We will not have a Jaguars team in the fall league. If you are interested in playing in the MCBA fall league and are not currently on a team, please e-mail Coach Noble at NWHSBaseball@aol.com as soon as possible so he can assist you in finding a team to play on this fall.
Finally, thanks to Coach White for another terrific job this summer. We are very fortunate to have his experience and enthusiasm as a part of the Jaguars program. Also, thanks to Mr. Sutton and Mr. Tolan for their help during the summer season as well.

Stouffer and Pupa help South Tie North in Brooks Robinson Classic
July 12, 2005 --
2005 graduates Brady Stouffer and Jensen Pupa each scored a run and played five innings in the field for the South All-Stars on July 10 in the 24th Annual Brooks Robinson High School All-Star Game of Maryland presented by Geier Financial Group. The game, played at Oriole Park at Camden Yards, ended in an 11-11 tie. Game rules stipulate that the game ends after seven innings regardless of the score. The tie was only the second one in the game's history.
Pupa started the game at second base and rotated between second and short. Batting seventh in the order, he went 0 for 2 with a walk and a run scored, scoring in the South's five-run sixth inning. Stouffer came in to play left field in the second inning and played all three outfield positions. Batting tenth in the order, Stouffer flied out to right in the third, singled and stole second in the fifth, and stroked an RBI double and later scored in the sixth. The rules of the game are modified. All of the non-pitchers bat, which means there are eleven players in the order, and there is free substitution on defense.
Stouffer and Pupa are the first NWHS players to play in the game, which is limited to seniors that just graduated. Joe Mattes and Justin Handler of Quince Orchard, Mike Moss of Walter Johnson, and Austin Hurd of Gatihersburg also represented Montgomery County in the game. Sherwood coach Bill Goodman was one of six coaches in the game, as he worked with the North team.
For more information about the game, go to the game's web site at www.brooksrobinsonallstargame.com.

Julio Orozco completed his senior year at Nyack College in New York. In limited action he was 2 for 7, scored two runs, and was hit by the pitch three times. Nyack finished the 2005 season with a 10-22 mark.

Frederick Ends Jaguars Season
May 18, 2005 --
Despite jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, top seeded Frederick defeated visiting Northwest 9-5 in the 3A West regional semi-finals. The fourth-seeded Jaguars finish their season with a 12-7 record.
Things started well for Northwest. Senior Seth Pearman and senior Brady Stouffer led off the game with back-to-back singles to put runners on first and second. Senior Jensen Pupa then reached on a Cadet error allowing Pearman to score and advancing Stouffer to third. Junior Stas Speransky then grounded out to first to drive in Stouffer for the 2-0 lead.
Frederick bounced back with four runs in the bottom of the first. A one-out walk and three straight singles led to Frederick's first two runs. The second pair scored on a two-out error by the Jags.
Northwest closed the gap to 4-3 in the top of the third. Stouffer led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second during Pupa's at bat on a wild throw on a pick off attempt. Stouffer then moved to third on a wild pitch and Pupa walked. The Jaguars then forced the Cadet pitcher into a balk by successfully executing a delayed steal.
Frederick added two more runs in the home half of the third with three consecutive two-out singles by the six, seven, and eight hitters. Two walks, a wild pitch, an error, and an infield hit led to three more Frederick runs in the fourth inning and a 9-3 Cadets lead.
The Jaguars continued to fight even down six runs in the seventh inning. Freshman Spencer Pearman led off the frame with an infield single. With one out his brother Seth singled to left to put runners at first and third. With two away Pupa singled to right to drive in the younger Pearman and advanced Pearman-the-elder around to third. Speransky followed with a single of his own to right to drive in the fifth and final run.
Frederick will now host Urbana in the 3A West title game at 4:00 on Friday. Eight seniors and senior scorekeeper Lindsey Kircher participated in their final game and will leave NWHS as the winningest baseball class in school history. Their accomplishments included 3A/2A/1A county titles this year and last year and a trip to the 3A West finals in 2003.

Jags Advance to Semis with 11-4 Win over Einstein
May 16, 2005 --
Junior Jay Tolan worked 4 2/3 innings of scoreless relief and went 2 for 2 at the plate to help lead Northwest to an 11-4 win over visiting Einstein in the 3A West quarterfinals. The Jaguars, 12-6 overall on the year, will now visit Frederick on Wednesday at 4 PM. The Cadets were 4-2 winners over visiting North Carroll this afternoon.
Northwest jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Senior Seth Pearman singled and stole second, then senior Brady Stouffer doubled to drive in Pearman. Stouffer later scored when sophomore Jon Brauch reached on a Titans error.
Einstein scored four times in the third inning thanks to three Jaguars errors and a lead off walk. Tolan came in to get two outs to shut the door on the visitors. Northwest bounced back with three runs in the bottom of the third. Stouffer lifted a one-out double to center and scored on senior Jensen Pupa's triple to the fence in left center. Junior DH Stas Speransky came up next and was hit by the pitch. Then, with two outs, senior Joe Sluger drove in both runners with a triple to right to give the Jaguars the lead for good.
Northwest made it 8-4 in the fourth inning. Tolan singled to center but was then out at second when senior Kyle Esche reached on a fielder's choice. Esche stole second and moved to third on Pearman's second hit of the day. Pearman then stole second and Stouffer reached when he was hit by the pitch. Eshce came in to score during Pupa's at bat when a pick off throw to third went out of play. Pupa then lifted a sacrifice fly to score Pearman, and junior Stas Speransky singled to center to drive in Stouffer.
Freshman Spencer Pearman drew a two out walk in the fifth and was followed by Tolan's second single. Esche then singled to right to drive in Spencer Pearman. The Jaguars final two runs came in the sixth. Stouffer led off with a walk, was sacrificed to second by Pupa, and moved to third on Speransky's second single of the day. Sluger then delivered an RBI single to left to plate Stouffer. Speransky then scored on a wild pick off throw to first base to finish out the scoring.
Stouffer started on the mound and worked a scoreless first inning. Senior R.J. Croat came on in relief and retired the side in order in the second, recording two strike outs in the process. Croat then gave up a lead off walk to the number eight batter to start the third, and two hits and three errors later the Jaguars found themselves down by two. Only one of the four runs allowed by Croat was earned. Tolan then came in and had his best performance of the year, working 4 2/3 shutout innings, allowing only three hits and striking out three.
In other playoff action, Urbana had no problem with visiting Seneca Valley, dispatching the Screaming Eagles 19-3. Homestanding Paint Branch nipped Linganore 8-7, so the Panthers will visit Urbana in the other semi-final game on Wednesday.

Wootton Rallies Past Jaguars
May 11, 2005 --
Visiting Wootton rallied from a 3-0 defecit to spoil Senior Day for ten Jaguars seniors as the Patriots defeated Northwest 7-3. The Jaguars finished the regular season with an 11-7 record.
The Jags jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second. Senior Joe Sluger led off with a single to center, then moved around to third on senior R.J. Croat's single to center. Croat stole second and Sluger stole home as Northwest executed the double steal to take a 1-0 lead. Senior Sam Davies then singled to left, moving Croat to third. Croat then scored on senior Ferris Bond's sacrifice fly to left to make it 2-0. With two outs senior Seth Pearman drew a walk, then both Davies and Pearman advanced ninety feet on a wild pitch. Davies then scored when senior Brady Stouffer reached on a error.
Northwest would get the lead off man aboard three more times but could not muster another run. Stouffer finished the day three for four at the plate.
Croat started the game on the mound and worked two innings, allowing no runs on two hits and recording a strike out. Sophomore Jon Brauch, despite walking two Patriots, worked a scoreless third and struck out two. The following three Jaguars pitchers could not shut down Wootton, however, as the visitors scored twice in the fourth, three times in the sixth, and twice in the seventh.
The nine senior players and senior scorekeeper Lindsey Kircher were honored along with their parents in a brief pre-game ceremony. Jaguars to Host Einstein in 3A West Quarterfinals
May 10, 2005 --
Fourth seeded Northwest will host fifth seeded Einstein in the 3A West region quarterfinals on Monday, May 16 at 4:00. The Jaguars finished tied with Paint Branch for the third seed but lost a coin flip for the higher seed.
NWHS earned a bye in the first round of the playoffs that will be held on Friday. Einstein picked up the five seed and the bye that goes along with it through the blind draw held today. It is the second year in a row that the Titans have picked up a first round bye via the blind draw.
First round games on Friday include ninth seeded B-CC at 8th seeded North Carroll, with the winner playing at top seeded Frederick on Monday. The winner of the Monday game will play the winner of the Northwest-Einstein game at the home of the higher seed in the region semi-finals on Wednesday, May 18.
In the lower half of the bracket, second seeded Urbana and third seeded Paint Branch earned first round byes. Jags Drop Heartbreaker to Quince Orchard
May 9, 2005 --
In one of the most exciting games in Northwest's brief seven year history, the Jaguars fell to rival Quince Orchard 3-2 at Jaguar Field. The Cougars are ranked second in the Washington Post. With the loss Northwest falls to 11-5 overall with one game remaining.
QO jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Kevin Collins led off with a single to right and stole second. After a Cougar strike out, Justin Handler was hit by a pitch. During Mike Celenza's at bat it appeared that the Jaguars had picked off Collins from second, but the umpire ruled otherwise. Celenza then singled to left to drive in Collins and move Handler around to third. Joe Mattes then lifted a sacrifice fly to left to score Handler.
Neither team could score in the second, but the Jaguars tied the game in the bottom of the third. Freshman Spencer Pearman had one of the season's best at bats, fouling off pitch after pitch before drawing a full count walk to lead off the inning. With one out senior Kyle Esche also drew a walk to put Jaguars at first and second. Two batters later with two outs, senior Brady Stouffer drilled a double to deep left to score Pearman and move Esche around to third. Esche then came in to score on a wild pitch, but Stouffer was left stranded at the end of the inning.
The game remained tied until the seventh. With one out Brett Fox reached on an error. Eric Weller then walked. After a fly out, Collins pulled a double down the left field line to score Fox with what would prove to be the winning run.
The game featured many standout defensive plays by Northwest. Stouffer made a spectacular leaping catch to rob Fox of a hit to start the second. Senior Sam Davies did an excellent job of following the runner from his spot at first and was able to tag out Matt O'Keefe at second when he rounded the bag too far after a double. Senior Seth Pearman's throw from center was right on the money to Stouffer, the cutoff man, and Stouffer's throw to Davies covering at second was a strike to Davies covering the bag. In the fifth inning sophomore Jon Brauch fielded a grounder and was able to throw out a Cougar runner that had strayed too far from second. Two batters later the Jags recorded a Stouffer to Davies double play to end the inning.
Senior Jensen Pupa was the hard luck loser for Northwest. He worked all seven innings, allowed just two earned runs on six hits and struck out five. Pupa's losses have been to second-ranked QO, third ranked Gaithersburg, and to 4A East champion Magruder.
Northwest heads into Tuesday's playoff draw tied for third in the 3A West region with Paint Branch. Despite winning the regular season meeting, the tie between the Jaguars and Panthers will be broken by a coin flip on Tuesday afternoon with the winner getting the number three seed and the loser getting the fourth seed. Urbana wrapped up the second seed with a 5-1 upset of top seeded Frederick on Monday night.
The playoffs begin on Friday, but Northwest will have a first round bye. The Jaguars will be in action at home on Monday, May 16 at 4:00 in the regional quarter finals. The results of the playoff draw will be available on the MPSSAA web site (see Links on the menu to the left of this page) sometime Tuesday evening.
Northwest still has one regular season game remaining on Wednesday at home against Wootton. The nine Northwest seniors will be honored before the game and will all start against the Patriots. Game time is 5:15.

Six Run First Sinks Jaguars
May 7, 2005 --
Damascus exploded for six runs before there were two outs in the top of the first and cruised to a 10-0 victory in five innings over the Jaguars. Northwest drops to 11-4 on the season with two regular season games remaining.
The Jags could only muster four hits on the afternoon. Senior Brady Stouffer doubled off the fence in center field in the first and singled to center in the fifth. Junior Jay Tolan smacked a two out single to center in the fourth and senior Joe Sluger followed with a single to right, but both runners were left stranded.
Despite a sore ankle he injured in gym class and not having pitched much lately, Tolan did an admirable job in long relief for NWHS. He gave up four runs in three innings before turning the reins over to senior R.J. Croat. Croat induced a fly ball to left field that freshman Spencer Pearman caught and followed with a perfect throw to the plate to nail the runner trying to score from third base.
Rival Quince Orchard comes to Jaguar Field on Monday at 5:15. The Jaguars will eagerly watch the 3A West playoff draw that takes place on Tuesday before playing their final regular season game on Wednesday at home against Wootton. Northwest has already earned a first round bye in the playoffs, meaning the Jags will not have to play on May 13. The first playoff game for Northwest will be at home on Monday, May 16.

Jaguars Post 7-1 Win at RM
May 5, 2005 --
Despite numerous offensive mental mistakes, the Jaguars limped to a 7-1 victory at Richard Montgomery. The win improves Northwest's record to 11-3 on the season.
NWHS tallied twice in the top of the first. Senior Seth Pearman drew a lead off walk and senior Brady Stouffer singled to center. With two outs senior Joe Sluger reached on a Rocket error that allowed both Pearman and Stouffer to score. The Jaguars scored twice more in the third. Stouffer reached on an error and senior Jensen Pupa tripled to deep center to make it 3-0. Sophomore Jon Brauch then singled home Pupa for the fourth run.
Northwest added three insurance runs in the seventh. Pupa led off the inning reaching on a two-base error then scored when Brauch reached on a two base error. Junior Justin Beroz pinch ran and scored two batters later on senior Justin Cantwell's single to left. Three batters later senior Kyle Esche reached on an infield single that scored Cantwell for the final run.
Stouffer allowed just one hit through six innings before the Rockets were able to scratch out a run in the seventh. In seven innings of work the right-hander allowed only one run on three hits and struck out five.
The Jaguars close out the regular season with three tough games over a five day stretch beginning with a visit to Damascus on Saturday at 2:00. The season closes with back-to-back home games at 5:15 on Monday against Quince Orchard and Wednesday against Wootton. The state tournament draw takes place on Tuesday evening. Northwest has already clinched a first round bye in the 3A West playoffs.

#5 Trojans Top Jaguars
May 3, 2005 --
Visiting Gaithersburg jumped out to a 5-0 lead after three and a half innings and held on to beat Northwest 6-2 at Jaguar Field. The loss drops the Jaguars record to 10-3 on the season.
The Trojans manufactured a run in the top of the first to go up 1-0. Austin Hurd led off with a single to center and stole second base. He moved to third on a fly ball to right and scored on Ian Marshall's sacrifice fly to left. The Trojans scored two more with one out in the second with a single, an infield single, a double, and another sacrifice fly. In fact senior center fielder Seth Pearman almost made a terrific catch in the deep right center field gap on the Gaithersburg double. The Trojans added back-to-back doubles with two outs in the fourth to go up 4-0, and then they scored run number five on a Northwest error.
Through five innings the only hit Northwest could muster off of Trojans starter Marshall was a one out double to deep center in the third by senior Kyle Esche. The Jaguars scored their two runs with one out in the sixth. Pearman reached on an error, then senior Brady Stouffer doubled to left to plate Pearman. With first base open, Gaithersburg opted to pitch to senior Jensen Pupa, and he delivered a double off the fence in straight away center to drive in Stouffer. The Jaguar pitcher was left stranded at second however as the following two batters struck out and flied out to end the inning.
Gaithersburg tacked on an unearned run in the top of the seventh for its final tally. The University of Richmond-bound Marshall held Northwest to just three hits in picking up the complete game victory. Pupa went the distance for NWHS, allowing four earned runs on eight hits, striking out eight and walking only one.
Northwest returns to action at 5:15 on Thursday evening when the Jaguars travel to Rockville to take on Richard Montgomery. The game will be the third of six straight games against 4A foes to finish Northwest's regular season.

Jaguars Bounce Back with Win at Blake
April 29, 2005 --
Behind the three hit pitching of seniors Brady Stouffer and Jensen Pupa, Northwest got back on the winning track with a 4-2 victory at Blake. The win improves the Jaguars record to 10-2 overall.
Blake drew first blood in the contest with a solo home run by third baseman Mark Schrader in the second innning. Northwest answered with three runs in the third inning, however. Senior Kyle Esche led off the inning with a walk, and senior Seth Pearman followed with a walk of his own. Stouffer then singled to center field to score Esche, the Pupa followed with a double to left center to plate both Pearman and Stouffer to give NWHS a 3-1 lead.
The Jaguars picked up an insurance run in the fifth inning. Pearman reached on a Blake error and then stole second. Stouffer then reached on a hit that trickled into left field, and as the shortstop for Blake went to retrieve the ball he kicked it into center field allowing Pearman to score. Blake tacked on its final run in the sixth when Schrader hit his second solo home run of the evening.
Stouffer worked the first six innings in picking up the win. He allowed just the two homers and walked three while striking out eight Bengals. Pupa came on in the seventh inning and struck out four batters in the frame. The first man that struck out reached on a wild pitch on the third strike. Pupa also overcame two Jaguars errors in the inning and fanned the top three Blake batters in the order to end the game.
Northwest now has three days off before hosting Gaithersburg at 5:15 on Tuesday.

Oops
April 28, 2005 --
Home standing Poolesville scored six runs on six hits and benefited from three Jaguars errors in the bottom of the fifth inning en route to upseting Northwest 8-3. The Jaguars finish divisional play with a 7-1 record, good enough for the school's second straight county title and third in seven years.
NWHS jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. With two outs, senior Jensen Pupa singled to right, stole second, and came in to score on sophomore Jon Brauch's single to right center. The Falcons tied the game with a single run in the second, then went ahead for good with another run in the third.
Poolesville put the game away by sending ten men to the plate in the fifth inning. A Falcons lead off walk was followed by a double, a ground out, two singles, two more doubles, a fly out, and still another double, before the Jags could end the inning. Senior R.J. Croat came on in relief of Brauch with one out in the fifth and allowed just one unearned run. He struck out the final batter in the fifth and the first two he faced in the sixth, then recorded the final out of the sixth on a fly ball to center.
Northwest tried to rally in the sixth but managed to score just one run. Croat led off the inning with a single to right, then senior Justin Cantwell smashed a double to left center to put runners at second and third. Junior Joe Braun, the courtesy runner for Croat, scored on junior pinch hitter Stas Speransky's ground out. Senior Kyle Esche then followed with a walk, but senior Seth Pearman's sharp ground ball to short turned into an inning-ending double play.
Pupa homered with one out in the seventh, his fourth of the year. He now holds the career record for home runs by a Jaguar with seven, and has tied the NWHS single season home run record with four this year.
The Jaguars saw several opportunities go by the wayside. After senior Brady Stouffer singled with one out in the second, Pupa hit into a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning. In the fourth Northwest loaded the bases with one out, only to have the next two batters strike out looking and fly out to kill that rally. NWHS had a runner on third with only one out in the fifth and failed to score as well. It was the Falcons big turn of the double play in the sixth inning with the heart of the Northwest order coming up that proved to be the big play of the game.
The Jaguars are now 9-2 overall and fall a game behind Frederick in the loss column for the top spot in the 3A West. Fortunately for Northwest there is not much time to dwell on the loss that kept the Jaguars from posting a perfect 8-0 division record as the team travels to Blake for a rare night game on Friday at 7:00. The match-up with the Bengals is the first of six straight games against 4A teams that the Jaguars have to wrap up the regular season.

County Champs Again!
April 26, 2005 --
Behind the one-hit, shut out pitching of senior Jensen Pupa, the Jaguars clinched the 2005 Montgomery County 3A/2A/1A Division title with a 10-0 win in five innings over visiting Seneca Valley. With the win, Northwest's seventh straight, the Jaguars improve to 9-1 overall and 7-0 in division play. Even with a loss at Poolesville on Thursday, the Jaguars can finish no worse than in a tie with Paint Branch for first place. NWHS has the tie breaker with the Panthers by virtue of the Jaguars 9-7 win at Paint Branch on April 21.
Pupa faced only one batter over the minimum in recording his fourth win of the year. The right-hander struck out six and allowed only three men to reach base. The first Screaming Eagle runner reached on a two-out error in the first, and the second one reached on catcher's interference in the second inning. That runner was later thrown out at the plate trying to score on a wild pitch. The final Seneca runner came with two outs in the third, and that runner was picked off first by Pupa just moments later.
Pupa got the scoring started for Northwest with a two-out triple in the first. He came in to score on a wild throw to third base that went out of play on the relay from the outfield. The Jaguars tallied twice more in the third. Senior Seth Pearman (also known as Pearson in the Washington Post) singled to left and then beat out a throw at second on University of Hartford-bound senior Brady Stouffer's fielder's choice. Pupa than walked to load the bases. Pearman scored on a Seneca Valley wild pitch, then senior Joe Sluger walked to load the bases again. Another walk, this one to junior Jay Tolan, forced in Stouffer to make the score 3-0.
NWHS put the game away in the bottom of the fourth, scoring seven runs after two men were out. Senior Sam Davies started off the inning with a walk and was bunted up to second by senior Kyle Esche. Stouffer singled to center to score Davies on a close play at the plate. Stouffer stole second and moved to third on a deep fly to center by Pupa. Then the flood gates opened as Northwest pounded out five consecutive hits. Sophomore Jon Brauch singled to left to drive in two and moved to second on an error by the Screaming Eagles' right fielder. Sluger lofted a soft single to left advancing Brauch to third. Sluger than stole second and the catcher's throw went into center field allowing Brauch to score and Sluger to move to third. Tolan then launched a double over the left fielder's head to score Sluger, and was followed by senior Justin Cantwell's double to left center that scored Sluger. Davies then singled to center to score Cantwell before the side was finally retired.
The county title for Northwest is the third in the school's brief seven year history, which includes the first season of baseball at Northwest that did not include a senior class. Northwest shared the 3A/2A/1A Division crown last year with Paint Branch and B-CC. The Jaguars, despite not winning the county title in 2003, advanced that year to the 3A West championship game.
The Jaguars play their final division game on Thursday at Poolesville before finishing with six games against Montgomery County 4A opponents. Northwest will play a rare night game at Blake on Friday at 7:00. Please note that the game was originally scheduled for Saturday afternoon.

Croat Shines in 12-1 Win over Kennedy
April 23, 2005 --
Senior righthander R.J. Croat recorded his first career victory in his first career start, holding Kennedy to no runs and just three hits as the Jaguars coasted to a 12-1 victory. The game, originally scheduled for Jaguar Field, was moved to Gaithersburg High School due to the wet field conditions at Northwest. Thanks to Trojans coach Jason Woodward and Gaithersburg High for allowing the game to be played there.
Croat needed only 52 pitches to work the game's first four innings. He struck out three and walked only one. At the plate he picked up an RBI on a bases loaded walk and also scored two runs.
The Jaguars exploded for eight first inning runs. Seth Pearman led off the inning with a walk and Brady Stouffer followed with an RBI double to left field. Jensen Pupa then also doubled to left to drive in Stouffer. Jon Brauch singled to move Pupa to third, then Brauch stole second. Both later scored on wild pitches. Joe Sluger, Justin Cantwell, and Taylor Murdoch all walked, then Croat walked to drive in Sluger. Kyle Esche then reached on an infield single to score Cantwell to put the Jags up 6-0. Pearman then drew another walk to score Murdoch. Stouffer reached on a fielder's choice that plated Croat for the final run of the inning.
With two outs in the second Murdoch was hit by a pitch and Croat reached on an error, setting the table for Esche who smacked a two-run single to left to put Northwest up 10-0. Northwest scored run number 11 with two outs in the third. Sluger singled to center, Ferris Bond walked, then Murdoch singled to left to score Sluger. The final Jaguars run came with two outs in the fourth inning. Jay Tolan drew a walk and went to second on a wild pick off throw, then moved to third on a wild pitch. Justin Beroz then picked up his first hit as a Jaguar, scoring Tolan to make the score 12-0.
Sam Davies made his season debut on the mound in the fifth inning. Although he allowed a run, he also struck out a batter and finished off the Cavaliers. Northwest is now 8-1 overall and 6-0 in the 3A/2A/1A Division. The Jaguars can clinch the division title with a win over Seneca Valley at home on Tuesday at 3:30.

Jaguars Hold Off Paint Branch in 9-7 Win
April 21, 2005 --
Northwest took another big step toward capturing the 3A/2A/1A Division title on Thursday holding off host Paint Branch 9-7. With the win the Jaguars improve to 7-1 overall and 5-0 in the division.
The Jags got off to a fast start when the first four players that came to the plate scored in the top of the first inning. Senior Seth Pearman drew a lead off walk and moved to second when he beat out a throw off a ground ball hit by senior Brady Stouffer. Senior Jensen Pupa then drew a walk to load the bases for sophomore Jon Brauch. Brauch delivered a two-RBI single to center to put the Jaguars on top. Later in the inning senior Justin Cantwell punched an opposite field double to drive in Pupa and Brauch.
After the Panthers responded with a run of their own in the home half of the first, the Jaguars tacked on two more runs when Pupa smashed a two run homer to right field. After Paint Branch picked up another run in the third, it was Stouffer's turn to go deep as his two-run homer in the fourth cleared the left centerfield fence. In the fifth inning senior Kyle Esche smacked an RBI single to center to plate senior Sam Davies who had walked prior to Esche's at bat and moved to second on a balk.
Paint Branch was able to score three runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh inning and had the tying run at the plate in the seventh before reliever Stouffer struck out the batter to end the game. Pupa started for the Jaguars and worked five and one third innings to pick up the win. Stouffer allowed two unearned runs as he finished off the final inning and two thirds.
Northwest has three division games remaining. The next two are at home, on Saturday against Kennedy and on Tuesday versus rival Seneca Valley, who could very well enter Tuesday's match up undefeated in the division. The Jaguars finish up divisional play next Thursday at Poolesville before concluding the season with five games against 4A schools.

Jaguars Improve to 6-1 with Win over Wheaton
April 19, 2005 --
The Jaguars scored at least one run in every inning in route to an 11-1 win over visiting Wheaton. With the win Northwest improves to 6-1 overall and 4-0 in the 3A/2A/1A Division. The victory also sets up a huge division encounter at Paint Branch on Thursday afternoon at 3:30.
NWHS got on the scoreboard quickly in the bottom of the first. Senior Seth Pearman drew a lead off walk and scored on senior Brady Stouffer's triple to left field. Later in the inning with two outs senior Joe Sluger singled to drive in Stouffer. Sluger then stole second, moved to third on a Wheaton error, and scored on a wild pitch.
With two outs in the second senior Jensen Pupa singled to right, stole second, and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Sophomore Jon Brauch reached on an error, then both came around to score on Sluger's double to center field. Sluger picked up one RBI on the play as Brauch scored as the result of a Knights outfield error.
Senior Justin Cantwell reached on a one out double in the third and scored on Pearman's single to left. After stealing second and moving to third on an error, Pearman scored on a Stouffer single to left to give the Jaguars a 7-1 lead.
Three more Jaguars crossed the plate in the fourth. Sluger, who reached on an error, later scored on a wild pitch. Cantwell came up with his second double in as many innings, this time driving in junior Jay Tolan, who reached on a fielder's choie, and junior Joe Braun, who walked.
The final run was scored by Pupa who led off the fifth with a walk and later scored on senior Ferris Bond's humpback single to left to end the game because of the ten-run rule.
Brauch worked the first four innings to pick up his second win of the year. He allowed just one run on four hits and struck out five. Senior R.J. Croat made his pitching debut, working one inning. Croat struck out the first man he faced and retired all three Knights that came to the plate in the fifth inning. The Jaguars continued to play excellent defense as Northwest did not commit an error in the game.

Pupa, Stouffer Lead Jags at B-CC
April 16, 2005 --
Only the B-CC Barons kept Northwest from winning the 3A/2A/1A Division title outright in 2004, making today's match-up with the Barons an eagerly anticipated one. Seniors Jensen Pupa and Brady Stouffer made sure there would be no repeat of the losses to B-CC in 2005 as they paced the Jaguars in a well-played 4-1 victory in downtown Bethesda. With the win the Jaguars improve to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in the 3A/2A/1A Division.
Pupa, who battled flu-like symptoms throughout the game, held the Barons to a lone fifth inning run, gave up only two hits and struck out seven. He also put Northwest on top with a two run home run in the top of the fourth following Stouffer's lead off infield single. Stouffer contributed a homer of his own, a solo shot with one out in the sixth inning. The University of Hartford-bound shortstop also contributed outstanding defense throughout the game, including a SportsCenter-worthy play to start the bottom of the third.
The Jaguars tacked on a fourth run in the seventh when sophomore Jon Brauch led off the inning with an infield single, stole second and scored on junior Jay Tolan's two-out double to left center.
The only run for the Barons came in the fifth inning on Wil Hanlon's RBI infield single. Pupa retired the final seven men he faced and needed just 95 pitches to record the complete game victory.
Division rival Wheaton visits Northwest on Tuesday. Game time is 3:30 at Jaguar Field.

Senior Brady Stouffer tallied two hits and drove in two as well. Senior Sam Davies also chalked up a two-RBI single in the first inning.

Brauch Rocks Rams in 11-1 Victory
April 11, 2005 --
Sophomore third baseman Jon Brauch had three singles and five runs batted in to lead the Jaguars to a five-inning 11-1 victory over Rockville at Ridge Road Park. The game was moved from Rockville High School because the school's new field is not yet completed.
Brauch's first inning single plated seniors Brady Stouffer and Jensen Pupa who reached on a single and a walk respectively. After the Rams cut the Northwest lead to 2-1 in the second, Brauch came through again in the top of the third with a two out single to score senior Seth Pearman and Pupa, who both reached on walks earlier in the frame. Senior Joe Sluger chalked up an RBI single of his own after Brauch, scoring Brauch from second after he had moved up on a steal. Sluger's saftety gave the Jaguars a 5-1 lead after the top of the third.
Northwest tacked on three more runs in the fourth. Senior shortstop Kyle Esche doubled down the left field line with one out and Pearman followed with another walk. Both moved up a base on a wild pitch. Two batters later Pupa drew the third of his four walks. Senior left fielder Justin Cantwell than flared a ball to shallow center that scored both Esche and the speedy Pearman. Brauch then smacked his third single, this one to left, to bring in Pupa with the Jaguars' eighth run.
Northwest scored its final three runs in the fifth inning. Junior catcher Joe Braun and Esche drew back-to-back one out walks and each moved up 90 feet on another Rams wild pitch. Pearman than singled to right center to drive in Braun and Esche, and Pearman moved up to second on the throw to the plate. After Pearman stole third, Stouffer lifted a sacrifice fly to right to score Pearman to make the score 11-1.
Stouffer made his first career start on the mound and worked four innings, allowing one unearned run, two hits, while walking only one and striking out seven. Pupa worked the bottom of the fifth, striking out three and allowing just one base hit.
The win improves the Jaguars record to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the 3A/2A/1A Division. Northwest returns home on Wednesday when the Jaguars host Einstein at 3:30.

Jaguars Fall at Magruder 5-3
April 5, 2005 --
Northwest surrendered a two-run home run to Magruder's Ross Sweeney with two outs in the bottom of the fifth that snapped a 2-2 tie as the Colonels went on to hand the Jaguars their first loss of the season by a score of 5-3 at Magruder.
The Jags jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Senior Seth Pearman led off with a single to center field and moved around to third on a pair of wild pitches. After senior Jensen Pupa reached on a Magruder error, senior Justin Cantwell singled to right to drive in Pearman, then Pupa scored when the right fielder misplayed the base hit.
The Colonels bounced back with two in the bottom of the first with runs scoring on a Jaguars error and on a wild pitch.
The decisive bottom of the fifth started well for Northwest. With two outs, however, Mitch Levine tripled to center and Sweeney followed with his home run. The Colonels tacked on an important insurance run following the homer with a walk, a stolen base, and a Jaguars error.
Northwest pulled to within two in the top of the sixth when Pupa led off with a double and then scored on senior Joe Sluger's two out single to center. In the seventh, senior Kyle Esche drew a lead off walk, but Pearman bounced into a double play and senior Brady Stouffer grounded out to end the game.
Pupa worked 4 2/3 innings and allowed three earned runs on four hits. His record falls to 1-1 on the season. The Jaguars have rare back-to-back byes coming up and do not return to action until Monday, April 11 against Rockville. The game was scheduled to be played at Rockville, but the Rams' field is still not playable following the school's renovation. The game site will be determined later in the week.

Pearman Drives in Six in Rout of Poolesville
April 4, 2005 --
Senior centerfielder Seth Pearman drove in six runs and senior infielder Jensen Pupa homered to dead center field as the Jaguars defeated visiting Poolesville 16-6 in five innings. The game was a make-up of a rained out contest scheduled for April 2.
Pupa's homer put the Jags up 1-0 after one inning. Northwest then exploded for nine runs in the home half of the second inning. Big hits in the inning were a two-RBI double by Pearman, an RBI double by senior shortstop Brady Stouffer, an RBI single by Pupa, an RBI double by sophomore Jon Brauch, an RBI single for junior Jay Tolan and a three-RBI triple for Pearman. The five RBI's in one inning by Pearman is believed to be an NWHS record for most RBI's in one inning.
Poolesville errors led to another run for the Jaguars in the third inning. Then in the fourth Stouffer contributed an RBI double and Pupa followed with an RBI single to left center to put NWHS up 13-1.
The Falcons posted five runs in the top of the fifth inning to cut into the Jaguars advantage. Northwest loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the fifth inning and then scored runs when Pearman reached on a fielder's choice, Stouffer walked, and senior right fielder Kyle Esche, who had reached on a walk earlier in the inning, scored from third on a wild pitch to give the Jaguars the ten run cushion.
Brauch started the game on the mound and worked three innings, allowing just a run on three hits. After Tolan worked a scoreless fourth, he gave way to junior lefty Thomas Vaudin in the fifth. Vaudin recorded the final two outs to pick up his first career win.
With the win the Jaguars improve to 2-0 on the young season. The win is considered a non-league game as the Falcons and Jaguars will meet later in the season in league play. Up next for Northwest is a trip to Magruder to take on Coach Varesco's alma mater on Tuesday, April 5 at 3:30.

Pupa, Stouffer Fan 15 in Opening Day Shutout
March 21, 2005 --
Seniors Jensen Pupa and Brady Stouffer combined for fifteen strike outs and allowed only two hits as Northwest opened its seventh season of baseball with an 8-0 shutout of visiting Watkins Mill at cold, breezy Jaguar Field.
Pupa threw 53 pitches and worked the first four innings in route to the victory. The right hander struck out nine, including the side in the fourth inning, to pick up the victory. Stouffer, who will share number two pitching duties with sophomore John Brauch, allowed only one base runner, a lead off walk in the sixth that was eventually picked off at second by Stouffer. The reliever recorded six strike outs and worked the required three innings to pick up his first career save.
Stouffer, Pupa, and senior Seth Pearman led the offensive charge as well. Pearman, batting in the lead off spot for the first time in his career, reached base all four times he came up, had two hits including an opposite field double, stole a base, and scored four runs. Stouffer contributed two hits, scored twice, and stole a base. Pupa picked up where he left off last season, lacing two doubles and a sacrifice fly in going two for three with four runs batted in. His four RBI's make him the Northwest career RBI leader with 49, surpassing Bobby Coleman's record of 47 set in the 1999 and 2000 seasons. Senior left fielder Justin Cantwell drove in a run with a first inning sacrifice fly, and senior right fielder Joe Sluger also added a hit for the victors.
The Jaguars do not return to action until April 2 when they host Poolesville at noon.

February 21, 2005 --
The 2005 baseball season gets underway on Tuesday, March 1 with the season's first practice. Both the JV and varsity will begin practice at 2:45 at Jaguar Field unless weather or poor field conditions force practice to be moved inside at a time to be announced.
Both the varsity and JV coaching staffs under the direction of third-year varsity coach Matt Noble will run practice. The final scrimmage schedule will be posted later this week and will also be distributed at the meeting on Friday, February 25.
All gentlemen trying out for baseball are reminded that each prospect must have a physical evaluation on file and must also turn in a parent permission form and a medical card in order to practice on March 1. Players cannot practice if they have a financial obligation or are ineligible following the second marking period.

Stouffer and Pupa Selected Pre-Season All State
January 27, 2005 --
Seniors Brady Stouffer and Jensen Pupa have been selected to the pre-season all state baseball team by the Maryland State Association of Baseball Coaches. They, along with the other team members and selected award winners, will be honored at a coat-and-tie banquet to be held at the Warehouse at Camden Yards overlooking Oriole Park at Camden Yards. The event will be held on Saturday, February 19 from 6:30 to 10:30.
Stouffer is a two-time selection to the team. He led the Jaguars in hitting last season with a .479 average and has a career average of .462. The senior shortstop also set single-season school records for runs scored and at bats, and set career school records for at bats, runs scored, and hits. During one incredible ten-game stretch in April, Stouffer was 23 for 34.
Pupa batted .471 with three home runs, 19 RBI's, and set a single-season school record for runs scored with 37. He also posted a 7-1 record on the mound with a brilliant 1.72 ERA. In 57 innings of work, the senior right-hander walked just six batters while striking out 49. Pupa earned the Washington Post's top performer of the week on May 18 after holding then-#5 Damascus to one run and five hits in a complete game victory.
Both players have played the last two summers for Gaithersburg Post 295, the two-time American Legion state champions. Pupa earned MVP and outstanding pitcher honors in the state Legion tournament. He batted .409 with 42 RBI's for the season and compiled a 3-1 record on the mound. Stouffer batted .303 with 19 RBI's for Post 295 and had the second highest batting average in the regional American Legion tournament held in Boyerstown, PA.
Both players figure to be All-Met candidates for 2005 and are among a strong group of seniors returning for a Jaguars team that tied for the Montgomery County 3A/2A/1A title a year ago and played in the 3A West finals in 2003.
If you are interested in attending the banquet, please contact Coach Dave Norton of Mount St. Joseph High School at 410-646-6222 or contact Coach Noble at Northwest at NWHSBaseball@aol.com.

Summer Camp Recommended by Coach Jeb Bauer
January 13, 2005 --
Players that are graduating in 2006 and 2007 should think about attending the Best in Virginia Showcase Camps at Hampden-Sydney College. JV assistant coach Jeb Bauer has worked at these camps and highly recommends them for both the learning experience and the chance to be seen by college coaches.
Session #1 is July 16-20 and session #2 is July 23-27. The web site for the camp is www.vabaseballcamps.com (see the Links to the left of this page).
Coach Bauer says, "The camp is extremely well run by Scott Gines, the new AD (athletics director) at Fairmont State University in Fairmont, WV, and Dennis Womack, former head coach at the University of Virginia. Great people and the coaching staff couldn't be better. If the guys want to play ball, they will surely get their fill here, and the food is good" (and the returning players know that Coach Bauer and Coach Noble like their food!).
Coach Bauer adds, "There are TONS of recruiters on Tuesday night and all day Wednesday. I think the last time I was at the showcase, there were 50-60 coaches there on top of 35-40 instructors for the two Showcase days. A lot of exposure for sure."
See Coach Noble if you have any questions, and he will tell you how to contact Coach Jeb Bauer. Coach Noble will try to contact the camp to get brochures sent to Northwest.

He is a great contact for those of you wanting to play college ball. Once you meet Coach Toomey you can talk with him if you would like to schedule further workouts. Mike Pazik, the pitching coach for the White Sox is also available to work with pitchers.
If you are interested in a very intense weight lifting and plyometric workout, baseball-specific drills are being done at Philbin Sports located on Gaither Road right behind the Best Buy on Shady Grove Road. The cost is $150 for Monday through Thursday sessions that start at 2:30 or as soon as you can get there after school. If you would like to find out more, see Coach Noble or talk to Brady Stouffer and Seth Pearman as they have worked out there.
Finally, all returning juniors are reminded to meet in Room 102 on Wednesday, December 8 at the start of lunch so we can show you how to do a college search. All returning juniors are expected to attend, even if you do not plan on playing in college. Players from other grades are also welcome to attend.

Thanksgiving Week Update
November 22, 2004 --
Keep an eye on your grades. Remember, the second marking period determines your eligibility for baseball in 2005. You must have at least a 2.0 GPA for the second marking period and can have no more than one failing grade during the second marking period. Monitor your grades on Edline frequently.
Math and science help is available on Thursdays during lunch in Room 350 and after school on Thursdays in Room 337. All levels of help are available, and you do not need an appointment to attend. Be proactive when it comes to your grades.
Camp brochures for the winter and summer are beginning to come in. We already have brochures for MC-Germantown, Penn State, Catholic University, and West Virginia. For more information, see Mr. Noble in Room 102.
Please turn in your physical, parent permission form, and medical card to Mr. Noble in Room 102 as soon as you have them filled out. There is no need to wait! Be sure to put Conditioning/Baseball in the activity space on the parent permission slip.
We will begin selling banners for the outfield fence on December 1. Check back for details.
Have a safe and happy Thanksgiving. I am extremely thankful this holiday season for a great group of players and coaches to work with and enjoy the great game of baseball with. (I know, it ends in a preposition)
Finally, bring on the Washington Nationals!!! The 34 year wait is over.

Another Virginia Wesleyan Clinic Update
November 10, 2004 --
Ah, the news is back to good about the Virginia Wesleyan Showcase. After speaking with one of the assistant coaches at Virginia Wesleyan, we have been assured that Division I coaches will be in attendance. While the NCAA is in a "quiet period," Division I coaches are allowed to WORK at showcases and clinics if they are on the paid staff. Divison I coaches are not allowed to simply show up and watch the showcase games.
In attendance for all three days this weekend will be Old Dominion, Hofstra, VMI, Richmond, Washington & Lee, William & Mary, Shippensburg, Lynchburg College, and Mary Washington among others. There will also be some professional scouts available.
We have learned a lot this fall about the recruiting process which will benefit the program for years to come. The single biggest thing we have learned is that we have to check out all information we receive. If you have questions about this showcase or any other camps and showcases, please do not hesitate to contact Coach Noble.

More Odds and Ends
November 10, 2004 --
Since some of you may have a pop up blocker on your computer, you may not have seen the last pop up message. All returning players should pick up a physical form, medical card, and permission slip from Mr. Noble in Room 102 prior to Thanksgiving. If you need a new physical, please make an appointment as soon as possible.
New uniforms have been selected and will be ordered before Thanksgiving. Returning varsity players may be asked to stop by Room 102 one day to look into sizes.
The infield grass has been repaired. Trenches were dug under the low area and rocks and fill dirt were placed in the trenches to allow for better draining. The trenches were then filled in to bring the low spots in the infield level with the rest of the grass and sod was put down. Hopefully this will solve our infield grass problem from last season. Fresh dirt has been ordered and should arrive within a week. It will then be mixed in to the infield dirt. At this point the field should be ready for March 1. We are hoping that all work will be completed by Thanksgiving.

Another Good Clinic
November 1, 2004 --
The University of Pittsburgh will be holding a College Select Clinic for high school players on January 16, 2005. There will be two, four-hour sessions. One will run from 9 AM until 1 PM and the other from 2 PM until 6 PM.
This clinic has been highly recommended to us by Coach Woodward and several of his players at Gaithersburg High School. Many Pennsylvania colleges, especially from the Division II and III levels will be in attendance. The cost is also right because it is only $90.
For more information and for a registration form, click on Links to the left of the page, then click on the University of Pittsburgh link. Also, feel free to contact Coach Noble at NWHSBaseball@aol.com.

Odds and Ends
October 26, 2004 --
Grade sheets are past due. Currently NINE players have not turned in grade sheets. These sheets MUST be in by the start of lunch on Wednesday, October 27. Easter eggs await you on March 1 for failing to turn in this grade sheet, and Coach Noble will also be calling home.
The National Honor Society has student-tutors available to help you with any class or classes in which you are having trouble. Please see Coach Noble for a list of the tutors and how to contact them.
We have had quite a bit of interest in players attending the showcase camp at Virginia Wesleyan in November. Currently we have as many as five players planning on attending the second session. The biggest attraction for the showcase is the number of colleges that will have coaches attending. Ninth and tenth graders may want to wait until next year to go, but anyone that is interested may attend. There is a link to the showcase information under Links on the left of this page.
Finally, the second marking period starts on November 3. Remember, it is the second marking period that determines your eligibility for the 2005 baseball season. Stay on top of your grades!

MC-Germantown Winter Clinics
October 19, 2004 --
Information and registration forms for the Montgomery College-Germantown winter clinics are now available. Players can see Mr. Noble in Room 102 for a brochure, or you can access the information and registration form on line. To find the information on line, click on Links to the left of this page, then click on MC-Germantown. When you are on the MC-Germantown page click on 2005 Winter Clinics.
We had seven players attend the winter clinic at MC-G last year and all of them were very impressed with the individual instruction and attention that they received.
We will soon be receiving information about the camp at Catholic University that takes place over the winter break. As soon as we get it, we will post a message on the web site.
If you have any questions about any of the above information, do not hesitate to contact Mr. Noble in Room 102 or at NWHSBaseball@aol.com.

2004 Archive Lost
October 5, 2004 --
Due to a major goof by the webmaster, it appears the 2004 Archive has been lost somewhere in cyberspace. On the totally off-the-wall chance that someone may have done this, did anyone happen to print out the 2004 stories? If so, could you make a copy of them and bring them to Room 102 so the webmaster can re-enter the stories?
Also, in an attempt to preserve the 2004 stats during the off-season while uploading the 2005 schedule, the 2004 stats have been changed and are now inaccuarte. These inaccurate stats will be removed and the scheudles will be re-entered.
See what happens when you have never taken Computer Applications?

10th Grade Players Needed
September 24, 2004 --
Germantown Athletic Club is still looking for players for its U-15 MCBA fall team and spring team. Players must be born on or after August 1, 1989. There are currently four roster positions available for the fall team. Positions of need are catcher, pitcher, and outfield. Other position players, however, are also welcome.
For more information, contact Coach Randy Leatherwood at randy@playballmvp.com. The coach is interested in having a team made up of mostly Northwest players, so now is your chance to play for the rest of the fall and perhaps secure a spot on the spring team. If you have any further questions, see Mr. Noble in Room 102.

2005 Schedules Posted
September 14, 2004 --
The 2005 varsity and JV schedules have been posted and can now be accessed by clicking on Schedules on the menu to the left.
Please disregard the results column in the 2005 schedules. Obviously the games have not been played and these are not predictions for the coming season. I need to keep this column in tact so we can continue to access last season's statistics during the winter months.
