Calling All Umpires! Join the Crew.

Since 1998, Piedmont has been actively recruiting and training umpires. Again this year, we invite youths age 14 and older, as well as Piedmont adults, to join the Piedmont Umpire crew. Free training is provided, along with loaned individual equipment (deposit required). The key to quality officiating is training. Training sessions will be held in February and March (see box).

TRAINING IS MANDATORY FOR TEEN & ADULT UMPIRES WISHING TO SERVE ON PAID UMPIRE CREWS.

Piedmont umpires are paid at a competitive rate, depending on the level of play and responsibility. Payment ranges from $15 to $30 per game (plate), and $10 to $20 (bases). A $5.00 premium is paid to those who umpire home plate during Saturday & Sunday games.

All umpires for T-Ball and Farm League will be volunteer parents. American League will use a combination of parent volunteers and less experienced umpires on the bases, with trained umpires behind the plate. National and Senior leagues will use two experienced umpires for all games.

Another key to a successful umpire program is the cooperation of managers, coaches, and fans in respecting the umpire’s judgement and supporting their decisions. Umpires do their best every time they take the field, and it’s important to remember that mistakes are going to happen... difficult as it might be to accept in the heat of the moment. Thanks in advance for your support.
