FULTON COUNTY TRACK & FIELD SEASON PREVIEW

The 2009 Outdoor Track & Field season looks to be one with a focus on rebuilding for the Fulton County Pilots & Lady Pilots. Having graduated 9 athletes with state level experience (three of which have gone on to compete collegiately) the team will look to set the foundation for a new crop of tracksters to come up through the ranks and carry on the teams' winning traditions. The program's strength lies in the leadership ability of a select group of remaining veterans. Each of whom are State Qualifiers, they'll be expected to tow the line for a roster of 35 which is one of the program's largest to date. The team also welcomes a new addition in assistant coach Laura Miller, a Fulton County Graduate and Middle School Teacher, Coach Miller will help us keep our young athletes focused on their goals and will primarily work with our female athletes and distance runners. The team's throwing core holds a wealth of talent while in the running events there is potential to develop some serious long sprint & middle distance runners. This year's motto is, "Hard Work...Pays Off!"

    LADY PILOTS

Entering her 6th year as a varsity athlete, senior, Deanna Dean is a 3x state place-winner in the Discus and Shot Put whose strong-arm could aloow the Lady Pilots double in both events and score big points. Ladaria Gaston, a junior, with 5 years under her belt will also lead the team as a 3x state qualifier in the 100m Dash and the 4x100m Relay. Freshmen, Casey Dowty & Raneshia Warren, add an element of versatility to the varsity program with the ability to contribute in a variety of events from the jumps and short sprints to the middle and long distance events. A solid group of middle school girls return to solidify the varsity relays and have the ability to achieve individually at the middle school level. Eighth grader Sarah Beth Bennett is a developing long sprinter and high jumper that should see action at both MS & HS meets. Porsche Wilson is the top short sprinter of the young ladies and a solid relay leg at the Middle School level. Bethany Sturgeon has developed sound technique in her form running while Abby Miller has made significant improvements in athletic ability, both will continue to improve in the middle distance events. Newcomers this season are eigth grader Laiken Dickson a potential distance/mid-distance athlete and seventh grader Annesha Jackson who is a developmental sprinter, both of which are seeing big improvements week to week.

    PILOTS

The Pilots of Fulton County return 3 state qualifiers in Tony Udley, Ladrekus Moffatt & Lance Mudd. All three seniors were part of the State Runner-Up 4x400m Relay Team last year and plan to make a return trip as one of the top ranked teams in the pre-season polls. Udley is a 400m specialist who placed 4th in the open 400m Dash and is a 3x state qualifier. Moffatt is a jumper / hurdler who is a Region Champion and placed 8th is state in 2007 in the 300m Hurdles and also advanced in the Long Jump. Mudd, a fall cross country runner, will focus on the Open 800m as well as contribute in the relays. Joining this trio are seniors, Dariquez Scott & Atit Thamrongvarangkul. Scott is a returning regional placewinner in the Shot Put and Discus and will also participate in the short sprint relays. Atit will try and give the Pilots a boost in the distance events after having participated in cross country during the fall. Juniors Mitchell Mulcahy & Jacob Goodman will be formidable throwers for the team. Mulcahy will be one of the top returning Discus throwers in the region and Goodman, a rookie, has natural size and ability that could produce some impressive marks with some experience. Sophomore, Victor King, returns to the team in the shot put for 2008. King was a state placewinner in middle school and looks to be able to compete at the varsity level. Matthew Whitt, another sophomore, will again participate in the distance events for his second season and should continue to show significant improvement. Rounding out the boys team will be a number of middle school athletes who possess some natural ability and a willingness to learn in order to contribute at each meet. 8th Graders LaDevin Fair & Dylan Johnson should be able to contribute at the varsity level immediately. Fair, in his second season is a returning regional placewinner in the 300m Hurdles and a well rounded athlete that will be an excellent utility man in the various relays. Johnson, in his first season, has taken to the high jump like a duck to water and should see significant success in the event. 7th Graders Kevin Bodon, Chris Allen, Ladarrian Polk, and Mike McClerkin will be learning the ropes at the middle school level. Allen will work on Jumps and Sprints, Bodon & Polk will focus on Middle Distance events, while McClerkin will specialize in the Hurdles. This group may also see some time at the high school level in freshman & distance relays.
