    Scotty's Insight!

June and the Last Insight of the 2004 season.

About 365 days ago we were getting ready for our trip to the state championships, having a fun time, getting our roomates and celebrating what was a great run. The run hit a bump in the road in the final game of last season as we lost to Union Endicott but expectations were high for the 2004 season. The Hawks took answered the expectations by repeating as division and conference champs as well as reaching the county finals for the second straight year.
In the county finals the Hawks ran out of magic and the run ended. The season was overall another great season but it was not as we expected. The Hawks will respond by working out and getting into shape for next year with as much determination as ever and to get back to the county finals. "The longest season in any sport is the offseason". I will return for my fairwell tour next season and will manage the hawks for my sixth season. Seniors i wish the best of luck to you in the future and may i be the first to invite all of you to come down and watch Hawks baseball for many seasons to come.

Hawks fly high and stick together.

    INSIGHT

Now it comes down to this, elimination game at the oppenents field. Breathe, take a minute, remind yourselves why you are here and what your purpose is. We are a team, we stick together and battle together. Remember that the game might be played in oceanside but that doesent matter, its played on a baseball field. Baseball is meant to be played on a baseball field. I know that we will be back in form for tommorows game, no matter who throws for us, i saw a light that our hitting will be comming on. Time to shift the gears and get back into this series. we need to give our pitchers run support, it's about time we see a regular pitcher. im sitting here thinking that we will get the home field back but we need to win tommorow first. sit back , laugh one out with the team but then its back to business. remember Hawks battle to the End. If things dont go our way tommorow, i recall this scene from the movie titanic.
we go down singing with the captain but im sure we will come out on top.
keep me in mind, im bring the cell phone list, i'll call most of ya tommorow night. scotty

    week of may 23rd.
Most important insight of the season.
After a long first week of the playoffs the Nassau county finals are set and it is a series for the ages. The defending champs, Plainview Hawks will have a rematch with the Oceanside sailors. Both teams have earned thier way into the Finals.

now for one of the most important messages.
I am leaving wednesday for a bat mitzva in florida and i will not be back untill the following week. I am missing games 2 and 3 (3 , if needed)
i am also going to miss the long island championship which i am confident we will be in that game again. il be back for our trip to the states . But first lets get down to business and take care of Oceanside in what should be a classic series. i wish us luck and have fun while you are out there.

    May 18th. Insight
Hawks beat Massapequa then lose to Oceanside. The Hawks are still alive and are going to respond as we still have our homefield advantage and the overall number one seed in the playoffs.
i put a traffic light in this edition of insight because we had a redlight this afternoon as our winning streak was stopped and we lost a close one. But the light will change to Green and Hawks Baseball will be on the go again. On Thursday we will face Mepham in a single elimination game with possibly what would be a ticket to the county finals. lets keep our tradition of hawks baseball and i will post a new insight friday.

Now that the seeds are in and that the opening round has been played it is finaly time for the top seeds to get their games going. In the top half of the bracket.
I will preview each team that has the double elimination but first lets see who won on saturday: Freeport beat East meadow, Calhoun beat Syosset, Herricks beat Long Beach and Valley Stream Central beat Baldwin. The top four seeds in this years tournament are:
The one seed Plainview JFK who plays the 4 seed Massapequa. Between the two teams there are 5 county titles since 1993, 3 long island championships since 1996, and a 2003 state finalist. The 2 clubs have a ton of playoff experience and it should be a classic game.
The other game has Oceanside and Mepham, two teams who have been in the playoffs the past 5 years. The last week of the regular season the Hawks swept Hicksville to earn a bye and the number one seed for the second straight year. I will update insight as the playoffs go on.

    Playoff games
1 seed Plainview vs 4 seed Massapequa
2 seed Oceanside vs 3 seed Mepham
5 seed East Meadow vs 12 seed Freeport
7 seed Syosset vs 10 seed Calhoun
8 herricks vs 9 long beach
    6 vsc vs 10 Baldwin
    2004 Playoffs "Lets Roll"

    week of May 9th
Hawks finish up week with sweep of long beach and key win over port washington... season play ends this upcoming week with a three game series against Hicksville plus a non-league game with suffolk county's own smithtown bulls... As we get deeper into May the weather heats up and so does the action but you can not look past the last week of the regular season. Everyone knows that the end of the regular season is near and playoff time is upon us but it is very important to keep your focus on as these three games mean as much as any game on the schedule. I think the only sport in which regular season games dont mean anything is the NBA. Even in Major League Baseball those september games mean something, teams looking to steal a win to keep a team from earning the division title or from winning 100 games. So as we enter the last week lets keep our focus intact and continue playing Hawks Baseball.
short insight will have recap of the week and a playoff preview on Friday.

    May DAY
The Hawks off week ends and Break out the Smoke Alarms, the Hawks are ready to catch fire and finish up the league schedule on a high note. The first two weeks of may are filled with baseball as Long Beach, Port washington and Hicksville are on the schedule before the playoffs...
Pictures are in and the Hawks 2004 photo looks great. The 2004 club will look to repeat as division and county champs.
... scouts honor, As we all know our own Jason Appel is being looked at by Major League scouts. The Ny Mets, Tampa Bay Devil Rays and Pittsburg Pirates are looking at the Hawks Outfielder...
... Head Captain Mike Rutcofsky has new co-workers. Congratulations to Lenny Wiener,Anthony Zito and Tom Hopkins for being named assistant captains...
...Old timers, As we draw near the middle of May, the Hawks nest will be filled with Hawk greats and other notable alumni. Last week pitcher Chris Campbell, and second basemen Jamie Spithogiannis came to visit the Hawks... Next week on the insight I will have results from this weeks games and will have more notes on the hawks.
    - scotty

Week of April 27th Hawks off week.

Plainview baseball comming off a sweep of Farmingdale heads into may with a full week of rest and plenty of practice. The hawks will be open for Business in may as the league schedule comes back into play and a makeup game against Port will also be in store. The last two league oppenents are Long beach and Hicksville.
... Notes from the off week. The Hawks scrimmaged the JV on Tuesday and will face them again on Wedsneday. The scrimmages keep the Hawks active during the long week off and gives everyone a chance to get into live game action and lets the pitchers keep thier arms active...
...Jason appel leads the county in home runs with 5 dingers... The Hawks look to have a Three man rotation for the rest of the season as the next ten days there will be atleast seven games... As of right now it looks that opening day for the playoffs and defending our championships from last year will be Monday May 17th... will keep in touch about that.
Zito has earned Hawk of the week for his hot hitting last week.

more insight then gammons, its scotty. seeya next week

    April 18th
Hawks take series from Baldwin and Split on Saturdays double header.
Pitching keys Hawks to wins. Tom Hopkins, Ben Green and the rest of the Hawk's staff has proven they belong with the county's elite teams. On Saturday the Hawks split a twin bill with Baldwin as Ben Green piched a No hitter in the first game. In the second game, the hawks came up just short to tying it up after Mike Rutcofsky's Home Run.
Upcoming this week is a rematch of the county finals as Farmingdale is the last series before the off week.
... Playoff races come into the picture as we get into the middle of april. The Hawks have a key series with Long beach and then finnish off with Local Rival Hicksville. Award races are heating up as some Hawks will battle with the best in the county to win season awards. i encourage everyone to come down and watch the hawks as the pennent race heats up.

Hawks beat East Meadow week of April 10th.
As the weather heats up so has the Hawks Bats. Our team has come out ready to play and we showed the toughness throughout the second week of the league schedule. I can tell that as the season goes on we are very serious as to repeat as league and county champions.
100 percent dedication and support from our fan van has made 2004 off to a great start. The upcoming week has a Baldwin team that is not to be taken lightly. The Bruins are the Hawks 3rd oppenent in the league schedule.

Hawk of the Week: Schenker for his glove work at third and his Batting in the final East Meadow game. way to be clutch.

    seeya next week.

    "APRIL HAS ARRIVED"

Hawks look to repeat and bring home a league banner for the second straight year. Scotty has the insight and from what I see, The Hawks are returning to form and the frost has melted from what was a long winter and March. The Hawks have opened up league play agaisnt a respectable Port Washington Team. Plainview came up with two key wins to start off league play. Sharp Pitching peformances and timely hitting helped the Hawks start off 2 and 0.

The next week a full slate of league games will be on tap.
The challenge of a League schedule is what I live for during the High school baseball season. In a given week you might play upto four or five games and then a day off and then at it again the next week.
HAWKS OF THE WEEK: The Entire team gets the nod as we came out and showed why we are defending league champs.
    see ya next week.

    -- Week of March 22nd --

The 2004 Hawks season starts this week with a full slate of non-league games and scrimmages. Teams taking on the Hawks include Bellmore JFK, Syosset a 2003 playoff team, who has key players returning. A playoff rematch with Mepham is also this week and that will be a game to watch.

Insight will be back later this week to report on the first games.
The insight continues as the Hawks played 2 non-league games this week and the bats were alive and well in both games. The Mepham game was as good as advertised and they will be a team we see in mid May.
The League Games start on Monday as the Hawks open up League play and the Defense of the conference title against Port Washington.
A Three game series will be played next Week.

Stat of the week: Hawks are 1-0 this year when Appel leads off with a Home Run.

    -- Week of March 15th --

Pitchers Tom Hopkins and Ben Green provide the Hawks with a nice 1-2 punch and we have Tom Guiletti and "B" AKA Brandon Feiland who also add pitching depth to complete one of the best pitching staffs on the Island.
Scrimmage report: On Monday the Hawks put in one of the best offensive shows I have ever seen. If Herricks had lights, we were on pace to score about 25 runs. The infield will be complete by Mid-March and ready to make routine double-plays.

Hawk of the Week: Lenny Wiener: He showed me a lot in the scrimmage, he can use the bat and he has gotten in great shape. Keep up the good work and i look forward to watching you call games.

next week insight will preview the non-league matchups and the Hawks coaching staff on the 2004 goals.
    Scotty.

    -- March 13th -- "scrimmage edition"

Split squad went well, bright spots include good pitching performances and healthy competition for positions.
    will update on monday.

    --Week of March 8th--

Catchers and pitchers have reported, Roster is set,all that is needed is the sun and oppenents.
This week's focus: The Sound of the Ball hitting the bat. Nothing sounds sweeter then the metal bat hitting the ball and this yr is no exception as the 2004 Hawks roster is full of players who can do just that.
My hitting preview has Jason Appel, He might become the first 10/10 Guy in the Scotty era. Tom Hopkins will be having his share of excitement with the bat as well and then the list goes on. Every Hawk will be a threat in the batters box. Next week will be my pitching preview.
Hawk of the Week: Ben Green , he looks like a Bull and he gets things done out there on the mound and he hits random home runs.
He also gets mesh hats. This is Scotty's Insight, see ya next week as I give a rundown on the Hawks pitchers and recap on what I saw from our scrimmages.

    -- Week of March 1st --
