Scrimmage Results
March 27, 2006  --   In would could have been the earliest a Starpoint baseball team has taken the field the varsity team traveled to Waschuta Park to face the Lew-Port Lancers. The weather was quite chilly but the Spartan pitching staff was rather warm. Derek Speaker pitched the first two innings and gave up just one hit. Jeff Szalkowski pitched a scoreless third striking out two. Ditto for Chris Storey in the forth. Bob Britton pitched the scoreless fifth. At the plate was a different story as a number of Spartan runs were scored as a result of walks and passed balls. Eric Roberts did hit a ball to centerfield that the outfielder lost in the sun and drove in two runs. Brian Booker also added a solid hit in the forth inning.
Same two teams will face off today at 4:00 P.M. at Starpoint.


League Opener Postponed!!!
April 5, 2006  --   Due to inclimate weather the Starpoint Spartans ECIC Division III league opener has been cancelled. The game will be made up on April 11 at 4:30.

Scrimmage today vs. Niagara Catholic
April 6, 2006  --   The Patriots of Niagara Catholic are planning to visit Starpoint to take on the Starpoint Spartans varsity and jayvee teams for a scrimmage. First pitch is scheduled to take place at 4:30.

Scrimmage Results
April 7, 2006  --   Your varsity baseball team struggled yesterday in a scrimmage with the Niagara Catholic Patriots losing 14-4. Many errors in the outfield, walks by the pitching staff and poor batting contributed to the lackluster performance. T.J. Carroll, Derek Speaker, Justin Scott & Jeff Szalkowski provided the only offensive sparks. The team looks to build on this perforance as they take on the Maryvale Flyers today in their ECIC Division III league opener.

Szalkowski Brothers Bring It!!!
April 10, 2005  --   Soph. sensation Timmy Szalkowski and senior Jeff Szalkowski combined to pitch a 2 hitter by beating the visisting Tonawanda Warriors 7-2 in the Spartans ECIC Division III opener. Timmy pitched the first 6 innings giving up the hit to the second batter of the game. He pitched his way out of a bases loaded jam in the first and never looked back. He walked 6 and struck out 9 to earn his first varsity win. Timmy's brother Jeff came in the seventh and made it interesting by walking the the first two batters and giving up a single, only to strike the next three out.
Jeff led the team at the plate by going 3 for 3 including a triple and scoring three runs he added a stolen base and drove in two. Eric Roberts also had a day at the plate by going 3 for 3 with two doubles, a run scored, and 2 RBI's, he also stole a base. Senior catcher Josh Austin added a triple and a RBI.


A Storey-Book Ending
April 12, 2006  --   Senior Chris Storey took a no-hitter into the bottom of the seventh inning and was two outs away from recording his first no-hitter. After getting the lead-off hitter to flyout to center Storey gave up an opposite field hit. He then settled down to record the last two outs en route to an 8-0 victory over the Depew Wildcats. This was the Varstiy Spartans first ever ECIC Division III road victory. Storey faced 3 over the minimum batters walking one and hitting one, the other reached base via a throwing error.
At the plate senior Jeff Szalkowski was 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored and an RBI. Derek Speaker was 2 for 4 with a sacrafice and one RBI. Dan Prosser and Tim Szalkowski each scored 2 runs to help the Spartans to move to 2-0 on the season.


Poor 1st Inning Spells DOOM For The Spartans
April 13, 2006  --   A poor defensive 1st inning was all it took for the Williamsville South Billies to beat the Starpoint Spartans 3-1. Senior Jeff Szalkowski settled down after giving up three hits in the 1st inning that ended up scoring from passed balls. Szalkowski only allowed three base runners and stuck out six the rest of the way as a result of walks. Starpoint's offense was limited to four hits. Their only run was scored in the top of the first inning as Justin Scott led off the game with a triple and scored as Derek Speaker singled him in.

Starpoint's Speaker Flies High As They Beat Maryvale 6-4
April 14, 2006  --   Junior Derek Speaker did a little everything Friday to help his Spartans move to 3-1 in the ECIC Division III by besting the Maryvale Flyers 6-4 in game that was delayed for over an hour due to thunder and lightning. Speaker pitched six solid inning to win his first varsity game. Chris Storey pitched the seventh to earn his first save of the year.

Grand Island Beats Starpoint 9-6 in 8 Innings.
April 17, 2006  --   The Varsity Starpoint Spartans rallied in the bottom of the seventh for three runs to tie the visisting Grand Island Vikings at six. Unfortunately the Spartans gave up three runs in the top of the eigth and then ended the game on a bizare play as the Vikings completed a not so normal double play to cut short a Spartan rally.

April 18, 2006  --   Behind Kyle Kozlowski's first varsity start the Spartans pounded out 9 hits and beat the Lakemen 10-3 in non-league action. Koz scattered 5 hits, walked two and struck out 4 Lakemen batters. At the plate he was 1 for 3, scored two runs and added a stolen base. Jeff Szalkowski was 2 for 3 with a double and three RBI's. T.J. Carroll added an RBI double. Justin Scott also contributed with a double, an RBI and scored 2 runs.

Spartans Fall Twice To The Falcons 8-6 and 8-2
April 21, 2006  --   Your Varsity Baseball team dropped a double-header to the Niagara-Wheatfield Falsons on Friday by the scores of 8-6 and 8-2. In the first game the Spartans took a 5-1 lead in the second inning as a result of Justin Scott's 2-run double. The Falcons managed a run in the third and another in the fifth. Then the Falcons erupted for five runs in the sixth, chasing starter Derek Speaker and Chris Storey. Storey pitched a scoreless seventh, as the Spartans could only muster one run as Chris Storey drove in Bob Britton to make the final score 8-6.
In the nightcap the Spartans were held at bay by the masterful pitching of Falcon hurler Kyle Smith. Derek Speaker drove in both Spartan runs as he plated Bob Britton in the first with a single and then drove in Mike Corbi as a result of a sacrifice. Bob Bitton was 2-3 with double and a single with a stolen base.


Starpoint Upends Warriors 6-4
April 24, 2006  --   On a cloudy, rainy and windy day that looked like football should have been the sport of choice, the Starpoint Spartans were able to beat the Cheektowaga Warriors 6-4. Sophomore sensation Timmy Szalkowski was stellar on the mound as he pitched six strong innings keeping the Warriors version or "Murders Row" in check. Number 1(Chris Storey) came in the game in the bottom of the seventh inning with the bases loaded and pitched the Spartans out of a jam limiting the Warriors to just a sacrifice fly and then striking out the last two Warriors. Storey earned his second save of the year. At the plate Bob Britton was able to drive in two runs with a single in the second inning in which the Spartans drove in all six of their runs. Jeff Szalkowski added a double, while T.J. Carroll, Justin Scott and Eric Roberts each contributed with RBI's. The Spartans are now 4-1 in ECIC Division III play.

Starpoint pounds out the hits as they Beat Sringville 26-0!!!
April 27, 2006  --   Jeff Szalkowski had a great day on the diamond as he pitched 5 shut-out innings striking out 12 Spingville batters en route to a 26-0 victory. At the plate he was three for five with a three run home run and scored 4 runs. Adding to the damage was Derek Speaker who was 4 for 6 with a solo home run, 3 RBI's and scored 5 runs. Number 1 Chris Storey was 2 for 4 with triple and 4 RBI's. Tim Szalkowski was three for three with a double and 4 RBI's before the Yeti fence gobbled his up. Eric Roberts had a double and a triple and 4 RBI's, Justin Scott has a double and 2 RBI's, T.J Carroll was two for three with 2 RBI's and Ross Johnston had 2 hits. Bob Britton pitched 2 scoreless innings to finish the game. Starpoint is now 5-1 in league and 7-5 overall.

Starpoint Wins a Wild One Over The Wildcats!!!
May 1, 2006  --   Eric Roberts scored the tying run in the bottom of the 7th inning to tie the score at 1-1, then T.J Carroll scored as a throwing error occured as the catcher tried to hit the pitcher covering home plate on the passed ball. Final score Starpoint 2 Depew 1. Starpoint is now 6-1 in ECIC Division III and 8-5 overall. Sophomore Tim Szalokowski improved to 3-0 in league play as went the distance on the mound. He finished with a 3-hitter , striking out 7, and walking none. Starpoint managed only three themselves in what turned out to be a pitcher duel. Depew's Cody Stachwicz matched Szalkowski going the distance and while striking out 8 Spartans.

Jeff Szalkowski Is Solid In Win Over The Maryvale Flyers
May 3, 2006  --   Jeff Szalkowski pitched his way out of several jams earning the victory 9-1 over the Maryvale Flyers. Jeff pitched 6 solid innings giving up 2 hits striking out 5 and, Chris Storey pitched a scoreless 7th to preserve the victory. The win puts Starpoint at 7-1 in ECIC Division III and 9-5 overall. At the plate Starpoint was led by Derek Speaker who had 2 hits, 2 RBI's and scored two runs. Jeff Szalkowski also had 2RBI's with a hit and scored a run. Timmy Szalkowski was 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored and an RBI. T.J. Carroll scored two runs with a hit and made 2 spectacular catches in right field.

Cheektowaga Erupts for 7 In The 5th, Win 7-3
May 10, 2006  --   The Cheektowaga Warriors batted around in the forth inning to chase starter Chris Storey and win 7-3. Starpoint took a 1-0 led in the third as Jeff Szalkowski's double drove in his brither Timmy who reached base on a walk. Chris Storey was relatively perfect in the first three innings but then gave up 2 consecutive single then a walk loaded the bases. Then timely sinlges and great bunting by the Warriors enabled them to drive in 7 runs. Starpoint tried to rally in the fifth as Kyle Kozlowski walked then Derek Speaker delivered an home run to deep right-center field to drive in two. Starpoint falls to 7-4 in ECIC Division III and 9-8 overall. Jeff Szalkowski pitched three scorelles innings to close out the game.

Szalkowski Tosses 1-hitter To Beat Springville 3-0
May 17, 2006  --   Timmy Szalkowski threw a 1-hitter while striking out 11 en route to beating Springville 3-0. Starpoint scored a run in the second as Jeff Szalkowski beat out an infield hit, stole second then came home as Bob Britton reached base because of a throwing error by the third basemen. Starpoint scored two insurance runs in the top of the seventh as Jeff And Josh Austin scored. Starpoint improved to 8-4 in ECIC Division III and locked up a second place finish.

Starpoint Falls To The 5th Ranked Team In WNY
May 17, 2006  --   The short-handed Starpoint Spartans fell to the 5th ranked team in WNY according to the Buffalo News. The Clarence Red Devils played error free baseball enabling them to top the Spartans 5-0. The Spartans had only three hits, two singles by Bob Britton and Tim Szalkowski and a double by Josh Austin. Jeff Szalkowski and Bob Britton combined to give up only 6 hits to the Devils, but 5 errors by the Spartans helped plate Clarences' runs. The Spartans fall to 10-9 overall. Our next game is vs. Newfane at home on Friday.

Spartans Fall To Sweet Home 1-0!
May 23, 2006  --   The Starpoint Spartans couldn't get the bats going as they lost to the Sweet Home Panthers 1-0 in ECIC interdivision play. Junior pitcher Derek Speaker five flawless innnings as he kept the Panthers hitters at bay, yielding only 4 hits and 2 walks while striking out 4. At the plate Josh Austin contributed with two hits and T.J. Carroll added a single in the seventh, but that was it as some infield errors cost the allowed the Panthers to plate a run in the bottom of the sixth. Starpoint in 10-10 overall and await the
Class A Sectional Seeding Meeting that will take place at Eden High School on Wednesday.

May 24, 2006  --   It looks like we will be playing an old friend during the first round of sectional play in the form of the Cheektowaga Warriors.

Hot Hitter Beats Starpoint in Sectional Play
May 26, 2006  --   Cheektowaga's Jeremy Nowak was smoking hot a rather dismal weather day. With a constant drizzle Jeremy's first two at bats produced a triple and a home run that virtualy beat the Spartans himself. Final Score 10-3.
