The History of the York County Junior Girls Softball League
1975 - The league was originally founded in 1975 by Aletha Groff, the first president of what was to become known as the York County Junior Girls Softball League. A group of 10 to 12 year old girls and their moms started out by getting three teams together from Hellam, Wrightsville, and Yorkana. They played slow pitch softball games on whatever grassy lots that they could find. At that time, only women and their daughters were allowed to participate. No men were allowed. Within a few years, dads were requesting to help out with coaching. As interest in the league picked up, the league quickly began to grow.
1979 - There were eight areas participating in the league with 23 teams from Craley, Hellam, Pleasureville, Red Lion, Windsor, Wrightsville, Yorkana, and Yorklyn. Each area in the league, except Craley, had one team in each of the 8-10, 11-12, and 13-15 age groups.
1980 - The Manchester area joined the league as NEMAA. Zion View also joined the league. Craley dropped out. There were 24 teams coached by 16 women and 8 men. Ann Scheetz was elected as the league's second president.
1981 - North Hills and Weiglestown joined the league in September, 1981.
1982 - Chanceford joined the league. There were 669 girls registered in the league. Dennis Weibley was elected as the third president of the league.
1983 - There were now 12 areas participating in the league including Chanceford, Hellam, Pleasureville, NEMAA, North Hills, Red Lion, Weiglestown, Windsor, Wrightsville, Yorkana, Yorklyn, and Zion View. There were 695 girls registered on 32 teams in the league. Bill Krouse was elected as the league's fourth president.
1984 - The name of the league was changed to the York County Junior Girls Slowpitch Softball League. York Township was accepted into the league.
1985 - After 10 years, the league had grown to include a total of 13 areas. There were over 800 girls registered on 41 teams. Pleasureville merged with North Hills to become Pleasureville/North Hills (P/NH). On July 31, 1985, the League's Board of Directors, representing the 13 communities of the league at that time, petitioned to the Y.C.I.A.A. high schools to provide slow pitch competition for girls at the high school level. The York County High Schools never did offer girls slow pitch softball as a high school sport. However, girls fast pitch was about to grow tremendously in York County within the next few years.
1986 - Jacobus, Spring Garden, and Stewartstown joined the league, bringing the number of communities in the league up to 16.
1987 - West Manchester became the 17th member of the league. Following the 1987 season, Stewartstown dropped out of the league. Jerry Anderson was elected as the league's fifth president.
1988 - Jerry Anderson resigned as president. For the next year, the league was run by the executive committee, since no one volunteered to take over as president.
1989 - By this time, there was much discussion about the league playing fastpitch. However, a league vote on January 25, 1989 turned down fastpitch by a vote count of 11-3 with two members absent. The 10U age group only was split into Major and Minor Divisions for the first time. The 12U and 15U age groups remained as one division with all teams playing "A" and "B" games. Late in 1989, NEMAA changed the name of their organization to NEYSA. Rick Ostrowski was elected sixth president of the league. At the November 1989 meeting, the league approved modified pitch with several "house rules" exceptions, for the 15U division only, by a 9-3 vote with four members absent. This was the first successful attempt by the league to break away from slowpitch.
1990 - Foustown and Windsor Boro joined the league as the 17th and 18th members. With Windsor Boro joining the league, the existing Windsor organization was then identified as Windsor Township. With the 15U division playing modified pitch in 1990, the name of the league was changed back to the York County Junior Girls Softball League. At the end of the 1990 season, the league approved expanding its former three division setup (10U, 12U, 15U) to four divisions by using the ASA 10U, 12U, 14U, and 16U divisions.
1991 - Lower Windsor Township joined the league as the 19th member. The YCJGSL had grown to 70 teams. Much of the discussion that year was centered on eliminating slowpitch in favor of the fastpitch game. On March 20, 1991, the league approved ASA fastpitch rules for the 16U division only for the first time. All of the other divisions continued to play slow pitch. At the end of the 1991 season, Windsor Boro dropped from the league. Phil Smith was elected as the league's seventh president. In November 1991, the league approved following high school fastpitch rules for the 16U and 14U divisions. The league approved modified pitch for the 12U division.
1992 - Only the 10U division remained slowpitch for the 1992 season. With the increasing popularity of fastpitch now in York County, the league had expanded to 80 teams in 1992. On September 16, 1992 by a 12-4 vote, the league approved fastpitch in all age groups for the first time in league history beginning with the 1993 season. The Bill Goodling House of Representatives "Achievement Award", a 10-year perpetual plaque, was first recognized by the league.
1993 - The 16U age group was expanded to include 17 and 18 year old players. The league's four age groups were now 10U, 12U, 14U, and 18U. Southern York County joined the league as the 19th member area. Foustown became known as Manchester Township. Zion View was voted out of the league following the 1993 season. Tim Zortman was elected as the 8th president of the league.
1994 - Stewartstown and Zion View returned to the league as probationary members. Hanover and York Haven joined the league for the first time as new members. The league began using Major and Minor Divisions in all age groups this year. The 12U, 14U, and 18U age groups no longer were to play the "A" and "B" game format as they were realigned to consist of Major and Minor Divisions for the first time. The 10U age group had been split into Major and Minor Division since 1989. Rod Hinkle was elected as the 9th president of the league.
1995 - St. Joseph's joined the league, bringing the total area membership up to 23.
1996 - Yorklyn dropped out of the league.
1997 - Fawn Grove and Wilshire joined the league. By now, the league had grown to become one of the largest youth sports leagues in the nation with 24 member areas registering 126 teams with ASA. Fawn Grove dropped out of the league after only one year as a member.
1998 - With the rising popularity of girls' fastpitch in York County, the league began sponsoring a fastpitch pitching clinic with the first annual clinic held in January and February of 1998 at the Winfield Club (York Township Community building). Wilshire merged with Yorklyn and became known as the Springetts Youth Association. Soon after that merger, Springetts dropped out of the league. Lewisberry was accepted in the league in March. ASA umpires were contracted to officiate the league's 12U Major division for the first time. Prior to this year, only the 18U and 14U Major divisions used ASA umpires.
1999 - Delta and East York joined the league in 1999. Weiglestown became known as Dover. Jacobus became known as JLS (Jacobus-Loganville-Springfield). John Cribben was elected as the league's 10th president.
2000 - Hereford (MD), Seven Valleys and Spring Grove joined the league. St. Joseph's became known as the CYO Diamonds. The league began using MyTeam.com web site to post Major division schedules, scores, and standings. One of the greatest events in our league's history occurred on June 10, 2000. The USA Women's Olympic softball team visited York, PA and played two exhibition games at the Bob Hoffman Complex Stadium. In the first game, a team of York County Junior Girls Softball League All-Stars lost to the USA Women's Olympic Softball team by the score of 8-0 (see box score and play-by-play results at the bottom of this page). In the second game of the doubleheader, the USA Women's team beat the Topton V.I.P.'s by the score of 10-0. Hanover, Lewisberry, and Spring Garden dropped out of the league following the 2000 season.
2001 - The league added a 16U age division, expanding to five age groups (10U, 12U, 14U, 16U, and 18U) for the first time in league history. The CYO Diamonds, Hellam, York Boys Club and Spring Grove dropped out of the league following the 2001 season.
2002 - Intensity, Flash Attack, and Keystone Thunder joined the league in 2002. Seven Valleys took in Spring Grove's teams and became known as the Rockettes Fastpitch Club. Hereford dropped out of the league following the 2002 season. Dave Trump was elected as the 11th president of the league. In the fall of 2002, MyTeam.com closed their web site and the league found a new web home at LeagueLineup.com. A new 10-year perpetual plaque was recognized by the league. The name of the plaque was changed to the York County Junior Girls Softball League "Recognition of Merit" Award.
2003 - Hellam returned to the league following a one year absence. New Oxford and Dillsburg joined the league in January as new members. Hampstead (MD) and United Parishes also joined the league in February. Dillsburg dropped out of the league in March after not being able to field enough players for a team. Spring Garden returned to the league in April after a four year absence. There were 26 member organizations represented in the league during 2003. There were 106 teams registered in the league with 1,474 girls participating. ASA umpires were used for the league's 10U Major division games for the first time. In September, the name of the league's annual "Merit" award was changed to the YCJGSL Aletha Groff "Recognition of Merit" Award in honor of the league's founder and first president. A special plaque was presented to Aletha Groff in September in her honor of the league reaching its 30th anniversary milestone. In October, Spring Garden and East York merged to become Spring Garden/East York. York Spirit Fastpitch, from the Fawn Grove/Airville area, joined the league in November.
2004 - The 2004 season was our league's 30th year! Hampstead and United Parishes dropped out of the league after only one year as members. Lower Chanceford and Dillsburg joined the league in March, 2004. Wrightsville merged with Hellam. There were 110 teams registered in the 2004 summer league. The league split the 10U Minor Division into "A" and "B" Divisions for the first time with the "A" division using a "no walks allowed" pitching concept. The Greek National Women's Olympic softball team visited York, PA on the night of July 16, 2004 to play a doubleheader against a York County 23U All-Star team and a Susquehanna Valley 23U All-Star team. The league offered a York County wide Fall Ball softball program for the first time in the Fall of 2004. A total of 26 teams participated in the inaugural YCJGSL fall ball program. In September, Flash Attack reorganized and become known as PA Blaze. Throughout the year, the league collected used softball equipment for the International Softball Federation. On October 18, 2004, nearly 3,000 donated softball equipment and uniform items were shipped to the ISF in Plant City, Florida for distribution to underdeveloped countries around the world. This project became the most significant publicity activity in the league's history.
2005 - In February, Lower Windsor became known as EYARC (Eastern York Area Recreation Commission). Southern Heat joined the league as a new member. Delta dropped out of the league in March after six years as a league member. Lower Chanceford also dropped out in March following one year as a league member. The YCJGSL participated in the Byrnes Health Center Family Health Festival with a booth set up for the first time at this community event. The league offered a 7U Micro age group for the first time in league history with six teams participating. There were a total of 117 teams registered in the 2005 summer league. There were 34 teams participating in the second annual YCJGSL fall ball program in 2005. A new York County Junior Girls Softball League banner was on display for the first time at the 2005 YCJGSL Playoffs. A second "Recognition of Merit" award was introduced in August. The league now will present two "Merit" awards annually, one to a player and one to an adult following each summer ball season. The league continued to collect used softball equipment for the ISF in 2005. Chanceford dropped out of the league at the end of the season.
2006 - Southern Heat and Spirit Fastpitch dropped out of the league. PA Vipers and West Manheim joined the league for the first time. Wrightsville and United Parishes both rejoined the league after a two year absence. There were a total of 119 teams registered in the 2006 summer league. The league sponsored pre-season tournaments for the Minor Divisions for the first time in May. There were 42 teams participating in the third annual YCJGSL fall ball program in 2006. Delta rejoined the league in August after a two year absence. Chanceford returned to the league in October following a one year absence.
2007 - A third, higher level of competition for tournament travel teams known as the Elite Divisions were offered in each age group. However, there was very little interest from teams to play in a higher competition level. Delta dropped out of the league after not fielding a summer league team. There were a total of 119 teams registered in the 2007spring/summer league. There were approximately 165 league players in attendance at the inaugeral "YCJGSL Night at the York Revolution" Minor League baseball game on August 1, 2007. There were 38 teams that participated in the fourth annual YCJGSL fall ball program in 2007. PA Intensity dropped out of the league in October.
2008 - Gettysburg and PA Ball Hawks joined the league for the first time. The league now has 26 softball clubs/organizations providing teams for the league. There were 126 teams participating in our spring/summer season, which tied our all-time record for most teams participating in the league at the same time. We also had 53 teams playing in the fall league, which is also an all-time high. The league used USSSA umpires for the fall ball league.
2009 - This is our league's 35th year!!! Littlestown, Hereford (MD), and PA ACES joined the league this year. There are now 29 softball clubs/organizations that are members of the YCJGSL... the most member clubs in the league at one time in the league's history. ASA and USSSA Certified umpires were used for all of the league's Major and Minor Division games during the spring/summer season this year. There were 136 teams playing in the spring/summer season which was the most teams ever playing in the league at one time. David Eckman was elected as the league's 12th president.

YCJGSL Yearly Summer Team Totals Chart
This bar graph shows the growth of the York County Junior Girls Softball League in our 32 year history. What is interesting to note is the rapid growth our league experienced in the early to mid-1990's when the league switched from slow pitch to fast pitch and began using the Major/Minor Division concept. You can also determine from this bar graph that the number of teams and players in our league has been relatively constant for the past 13 years.
|
YCJGSL Yearly Fall Ball Team Totals Chart
The YCJGSL began a Fall Ball League in 2004. Our Fall Ball program has grown dramatically in just five years when you consider that prior to 2004, we had very few York County teams playing Fall Ball in other leagues outside of York County.

1995 Newspaper Article about the YCJGSL
The following article was published in the June 1, 1995 edition of The York Dispatch newspaper sports pages. Thanks to Beth Hudson, Dispatch/Sunday News writer, for providing our league with some great publicity at a time in our league's history when we were experiencing tremendous growth.
County girls catching up to fast-pitch competition
by Beth Hudson
Dispatch/Sunday News
York County is catching up on the softball diamond.
Not only are more girls playing the sport than ever before, said Ron Kirkwood, of the York County Girls' Softball League, but local softball is becoming more competitive.
"In general, the popularity (of softball) has taken off like crazy," said Kirkwood, who handles the league's public relations. "It's all over the country."
The York League, which began the season this week, started playing fast-pitch ball three years ago.
"In Lancaster County, they've been doing fast-pitch and modified-pitch for a while," said Kirkwood. "Teams from York County are actually starting to compete on a strong basis."
The implementation of fast-pitch has definitely helped to increase interest and skills locally, Kirkwood said.
There are roughly 109 teams in four age groups - 18 and under, 14 and under, 12 and under, and 10 and under - in the local league this season.
That was up from about 102 teams last season and 90 the year before, said league vice president Tim Zortman.
"You're starting to see a better caliber of play," said Zortman. "Hopefully, in years to come, it'll become better and better. York County's a little behind and they need to catch up."
One of the league's goals is to help local girls who want to play for their high school softball teams.
"A lot of the high school coaches recommend that their players play over the summer," said league president Rod Hinkle. " The high schools want the kids to play the same sport over the summer as they do in the school year. I think it improves the skills."
The league also has room for beginners or those who are less serious about the sport. Within each age group, there are major and minor divisions. More advanced players compete in the majors and there is a championship at the end of the season. Beginners or players who want a more recreational approach to the game can play in the minors.
"This seems to have increased tremendously the girls who want to play," said Zortman.
And, said Kirkwood, there are definately more girls who want to play sports than in the past.
"Female athletes in general tend to have more of a desire to compete in sports," he said.

2004 Greek Olympic Softball Event in York a Success
Many thanks to everyone who supported and attended the Greek Olympic Softball Event in York, PA on Friday evening, July 16, 2004. There were about 1,200 in attendance and it was an exciting evening of first class fast pitch softball with the Greek Women's Olympic team playing two games against some outstanding ASA of PA All-Stars from York and the Susquehanna Valley. There was a wonderful pre-game ceremony leading up to the start of the first game. During the introductions, those of our summer league's players who were in attendance took part in the pre-game ceremonies by helping to distribute white roses to each of the players and coaches on both the Greek Olympic team and our York County 23U All-Star team.
While we went into the first game with our York County 23U All-Star team expecting to give the Greek Olympic team a challenge, we ended up losing by the score of 10-0 in 6 innings. In the second game, the Susquehanna Valley 23U All-Stars also lost to the Greek Olympic team by the score of 3-0.
Our York County team also played in the first ever ASA 23U State Championships at the Hoffman Complex on Saturday, July 17, 2004. With only four teams participating in the tournament, we ended up finishing in third place with a 2-2 record. We lost our first game to Chaos, 5-2. Then our York County team beat the Pennsbury Gems 6-3. Our third game was in the first round of double elimination where we lost a close but very exciting game to Harrisburg by the score of 3-2. Our final game of the day was in the loser bracket where we again beat the Pennsbury Gems, 6-1. We were then scheduled to play Harrisburg again to get to the tournament championship game but the remainder of the tournament was unfortunately washed out due to rain.
All in all, we had a great time reuniting old friends and getting some of the finest fast pitch players from York County together for a great weekend of softball. I want to express my sincere thanks to Phil Smith, Jeff Scofield and Vicky Scofield for their time and support in helping me put our York County 23U All-Star team together. Also, a very special thank you to all of our "star" players who took the time out of their busy schedules to participate in this Olympic/Tournament weekend... Jaime Colvin, Courtney Davidson, Katie Davis, Angie Day, Melissa Feliksik, Miranda Fox, Dana Johns, Lexi Myers, Katie Pollick, Cassie Scofield, Stacy Scofield, Steph Shaul, Alison Sheaf, Amber Smith, and Lauren Wible. We also would like to thank our honorary bat girls, Katie Swade and Alexys Bryan, who did a great job during our game against the Greek Olympic team.
Many thanks to all who donated used (and new) softball equipment to support the collection project for the International Softball Federation. Nearly 500 pieces of equipment were donated at the Hoffman Stadium gate for the Greek Olympic Softball Event in York on Friday evening, July 16th.
And finally, I also want to thank the "ASA of PA" and Stacey Stuck, our ASA PA state youth commissioner, for allowing York, PA to host one of the events for the Greek Women's Olympic Softball Team on their "Tour to Athens". The York County softball community wishes the Greek team the best in their quest for an Olympic medal at the 2004 Olympic games in Greece. We were proud to have been a part of their pre-Olympic tour.
Dave Trump, President York County Junior Girls Softball League
