2009 McDonald's Roundball Recap

By TIM KOELBLE , Herald-Mail

March 22, 2009---There were more than a few oohs and aahs heard during the fourth annual Roundball Classic, a daylong marathon of basketball at Hagerstown Community College on Sunday.

The Roundball Classic is a regional showcase of basketball talent. Players from the East Coast came to play one last high school game while hoping to catch the eye of one of the many college coaches in attendance.

There were plenty of rim-rattling dunks and 3-pointers falling in the Boys Premier game, the final contest of the five-game extravaganza.

The highlight of the day for Tri-State players was provided by Morgan McIntire of Heritage Academy who stood tallest among her peers in the girls Classic Elite game.

Kierah Hicks of Western and David Hobel of Mountian Ridge won the two 3-point shootouts. Greg Edwards of Susquehanna Township won the slam dunk title with a windmill dunk that pleased the judges.

The five games featured many more glittering performances.

Kansas-bound Robinson leads National all-stars to 103-101 victory in Boy's Premier Game

National 103, American 101

Kansas-bound Thomas Robinson, of Brewster (N.H.) Prep via Riverdale Baptist, snared most valuable players as the National team stole a 103-101 victory over the Americans in the final seconds.

Robinson delighted the crowd with two strong dunks, hit 7 of 8 from the line, scored inside and out and ended with 29 points.

But National teammate Derrick Thomas of St. John’s College, a Drexel University recruit, turned the table in the waning moments.

Thomas drove the length of the floor after a rebound to score and tie the game at 101-all. He immediately stole the American inbound pass and scored with 2.3 seconds remaining to win the game.

Christian Weber of Landon School, a Harvard recruit, led the Americans with 20 points.

Hedgesville’s J.R. Mayles had six points for the Nationals.

Isaac Thornton, who returned home from Charleston, W.Va. around 2 a.m. after his Martinsburg team won the West Virginia state title, played and scored two points for the Americans.

The teams combined for 20 3-point goals.

National all-stars squeeze past American stars, 59-58

National 59, American 58

The National team bolted to a 31-21 halftime lead, thanks mostly to two quick 3-pointers before intermission by Rahneeka Saunders of Riverdale Baptist. The flurry added a little spark to an otherwise lackluster first half of shooting by both teams.

The Americans gradually pushed back into contention in the second half to take a 52-51 lead with 5:38 remaining when North Hagerstown’s Kirksten Mitchell hit a 3-pointer from the right wing.

Shavonne Duckey of Lackey, who has been recruited by George Mason, hit a 3-pointer to give the National team a 54-52 lead it never relinquished.

Saunders was named the most valuable player for her 10 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals in the game.

Talent to turn out for Classic

By TIM KOELBLE, Herald-Mail

They came from states as if they were ready to convene at a convention.

But this meeting Sunday at Hagerstown Community College was for media day for the fourth annual Roundball Classic, slated for March 22 at the school's athletic complex. This year's basketball marathon has plenty to offer.

"It will be a basketball junkie's heaven," said event director Dave Foltz, who spent the day welcoming nearly 150 boys and girls who will play in five all-star events.

The Roundball Classic begins at noon with the boys Shooting Stars, followed by the girls Four-State Elite at 1:30 and the boys Four-State Elite at 3.

After an intermission for 3-point shooting and slam dunk contests, the girls Mid-Atlantic Premier game will tip off at 5:30, followed by the boys Premier game around 7:30.

The last two games will feature players who will be carrying impressive credentials to the college in the fall.

"We've got boys that are going to Oklahoma and Kansas and girls that are going to Maryland and North Carolina," Foltz said. "I don't think you can get more prestigious than this."

For one player, the Roundball Classic will be the debut of a senior season that never started.

Jermaine Marshall, a 6-foot-4 guard from Red Land in Pennsylvania's Mid-Penn Conference, suffered a season-ending knee injury during a pickup game in September. Fortunately, it was after he committed to play at Penn State next season.

"Penn State stayed after me my entire time in high school and I felt so welcomed on my visits there," said Marshall. "They recruited me as a 2-guard and I'll have an opportunity to play as a freshman."

Five players from Riverdale Baptist (Upper Marlboro, Md.) will be playing in the Classic, including three girls from its No. 10 nationally ranked team by USA Today.

Ashleigh Fossett could have been a fourth member from the Riverdale Baptist team, but left the school and transferred to Urbana to be near her mother during an illness.

Fossett, who is averaging 16 points per game for the unbeaten Hawks, will play in the Premiere game.

"We knew we would be good (at Urbana)," said Fossett, who has yet to select a college. "It's going to be really nice playing in this game. I know so many of the girls from AAU ball."

Fossett, a member of the Premier National team, will once again play opposite of North Hagerstown's Kirksten Mitchell, a member of the Premier American team. The two squared off last week during Urbana' 60-58 victory.

"I got an adrenaline rush playing that game," said Fossett. "We knew that was a game we could have been beat."

For many of the athletes who have yet to decide on their futures, the Roundball Classic could be a recruiting showcase.

"We haven't had a good year, so this is an opportunity to showcase yourself," said Boonsboro senior Shane Zbir.

"There are 160 kids from 95 schools and they're the best," said Foltz.

Players spent time on Sunday shooting at a portable basket with children with congenital heart disease. The Roundball Classic will again benefit the Pediatric and Congenital Heart Disease Foundation. In addition, it will benefit the Katie Stains Fund for the Williamsport High School cheerleader who is fighting cancer.
Baltimore's Boswell, Silver to coach Mid-Atlantic Premier Girls

January 30, 2009---Two of Baltimore's top high school girls coaches will each lead a team in the 2009 McDonald's Roundball Classic Mid-Atlantic Premier Game.

Seton Keough's Jackie Boswell and Western HS coach Tiffany Silver were named head coaches for this season's top girls game.

Boswell has coached at Seton Keough since the 2000 season, compiling a 188-60 record, with three IAAM regular season championships, and a #25 national ranking by USA Today in 2008.

In June 2007, Boswell was the USA Olympic Youth Development coach in Colorado Springs, coaching such stars as Shekinna Strickland (Tennessee), Nikki Speed (Rutgers), Brooklyn Pope (Rutgers), Sarah Booth (Stanford), Nnemkadi Ogwumike (Stanford), and Brittany Rayburn (Purdue).

Other top players Boswell has coached include Denise King-Rhode Island, Keisha Blackwell-Providence, Jackie Valderas-Loyola, Haliena Snowden-Towson, BJ Williams-Temple, Ayana Lee-Drexel, and Tyler Hale-Drexel.

Silver has coached top players including Marah Strickland-Maryland, Akeema Richards, who will be attending West Virginia University, while also sending players to Georgetown, Delaware State, North Carolina A&T, Johnson C. Smith, Wilmington College, Goucher College, Eastern Mennonite, and Pensacola JC.

Three Baltimore City Player of the year recipients and one Metro-Area Player of the Year have been under the direction of Silver while her players have an impressive 100% graduation rate and a 100% college acceptance to four year Universities/Colleges.

Silver has also turned around two other programs---Towson Catholic and Friends School of Baltimore.

Coach Martin is in his fourth season as Head Coach at The John Carroll School in Bel Air, MD. In his first three seasons at Carroll, the Patriots have won 63 games, while setting the school record for wins in the 2006-07 season with 28.

As head coach at Archbishop Spalding, Martin led the Cavs to national prominence in just three years. He also coached four years each at Baltimore Catholic League powerhouses Mount St. Joseph and Cardinal Gibbons.

Previously, Cheung was an assistant coach at Division I Coastal Carolina University in South Carolina.

During his playing days, Cheung led Mount Saint Mary's University to the NCAA Tournament in 1995 and NIT in 1996. While at Mount, he played under legendary Coach Jim Phelan. After college, Cheung played professionally in Europe.

Zimmerman spent numerous seasons as an assistant to Tom Dickman at Thomas Johnson, winning several state championships.

Dave Herman, who has coached Winters Mill since the school's opening in 2002, guided Winters Mill to its first state championship in boys basketball in the school's sixth year of existence with a pair of stunning victories over highly touted teams.

The state title was the first for a Carroll County school since Westminster won in 1947.
