Allatoona starts season with a 5th place finish at Blackbeard
November 28, 2010
Allatoona varsity team started the season off with 1st ever victories over Harrison and Blessed Trinity. Despite a mixed up lineup that saw 4 first year wrestlers in the starting lineup; the Buccaneers were able to pull out some much needed pins to get a good start. Our new wrestlers fought hard all weekend and earned some great experience. Our upper weights proved to be the strong point this weekend and helped us jump out to a 45-0 lead on Harrison. We ended up wrestling Blessed Trinity twice over the course of the tournament with the result ending in two Buccaneer victories.

This is the team score list and individual placements from the McCallie Powerade Invitational. We had a good showing with only 9 kids out of the 14 weight classes. Our JV1 team went to a 15 team tournament at Blessed trinity and took 1st place! Our JV2 team (only 8 kids) went to Marietta for a 15 team tournament and took 5th place!!!! It was a good weekend for Buccaneer Wrestling. We are finally starting to get our legs under us and hopefully settle into a stable lineup. We still have questions at 189 and heavyweight that we will have to address if we hope to compete in state duals.

Results from Region Duals
Our wrestling program experienced some very positive things this week and I feel we learned some important lessons in the process. We started the week of competition with a program dual at South Paulding High School. It was great to see our high school program wrestle in the same gym as our youth. The middle school team fought in a close dual with one of the top middle school dual teams in the state and came up a little short 26-36. Our lower weights dominated the match and it looked as though they were going to pull out a victory. Our elementary kids looked great against South Paulding and from what I could see seemed to win most of their matches.
Our varsity earned their first win ever over South Paulding with a dominating 50-21 win.
Friday and Saturday, our varsity traveled to Gilmer County for the area 7AAA dual tournament. Our area is one of the toughest areas in all of Georgia and the hype did not disappoint. We entered the tournament as the #4 seed and our expectations were to fight hard to make the finals (a tall task for our young team). We had to weigh in at 2:30pm and had the pleasure of sitting in the gym until 7pm waiting to wrestle. Our first opponent was Pickens County. It was probably one of the most intense duals of the season which ended in a 33-33 tie. Our kids wrestled very hard and did the things that we teach them to do everyday in practice; be aggressive and hard nosed at all times. Unfortunately, this style hurt us in this area (with local refs) and we were hit with 4 unnecessary roughness calls. This is the first criteria in deciding a tied match and we ended up losing the match.
This loss put us in a precarious position to wrestle back through the consolation bracket. We defeated Ridgeland in the next match 53-18 and had to immediately wrestle Ringgold for the ability to move forward to Saturday competition. Our wrestlers battled hard against Ringgold to win 42-37. Saturday matched us up against the eventual 2nd place team, Heritage. Although we jumped out to an early lead, we were unable to hold on and lost in the consolation semi-finals 17-56.
I am very proud of the tenacity and "get after it" style our boys showed all weekend. We definitely showed that we will be a team to watch for in the traditional tournament in February. We will approach the rest of the season with a new attitude and know that regardless of what has occured so far; any of our kids can make a run for state and eventually state placement and state championships.
