Eligibility Information (for more info go to the CIF-SS link)
Academic Eligibility
Grade Point Average
Achievement of 2.0 grade point average (C average) for all courses in which the student was enrolled during the preceding grading period and for which a letter grade was assigned. Student must also earn at least 20 units of "new"(non-repeat)work.
Probationary Period
Incoming ninth grade students are the only ones allowed to have a probationary period for academic eligibility. Students are allowed to start with a clean slate at the beginning of the fall semester. Starting with the first quarter report card, freshmen will be held to the same standard as all other students. No other probationary period is allowed.
CIF Transfer Eligibility
CIF has the responsibility of setting the guidelines for participation in all sanctioned high school sports throughout California. A large part of their charge is determining athletic eligibility rules and guidelines. The following are the main issues that come up when questions about CIF athletic eligibility are asked:
1. Restrictions are rarely placed on student’s participation in lower levels of sport. CIF restrictions are typically placed on Varsity level participation only.
2. If you have participated in a sport at another high school at any level of play (varsity, JV, frosh), you are restricted from varsity participation in that same sport at the new school unless the transfer is a result of a bona-fide move or a hardship is granted. Participation in any sport not played in the previous year at the former school would not be restricted.
3. Students are eligible automatically if they enroll in a school (pending district approval) the beginning of their 9th grade year regardless of where they live.
4. If a student transfers schools and the entire family moves into the new schools attendance area, this is considered a bona-fide move and the student is eligible without restrictions. If only part of the family moves or there are other circumstances involved, eligibility is handled on a case by case basis.
5. Hardship applications are not automatically granted by CIF. For a hardship to be granted, there typically needs to be evidence of an unforeseeable, unavoidable, and uncorrectable act, condition, or event which causes the imposition of a severe and non-athletic burden upon the student and his/her family.
6. All eligibility restrictions are for one year from the date of the transfer.
7. As of July 1, 2007, CIF State committee has enacted a one time transfer allowance for 9th graders. A student can transfer from school A to school B without a valid change of address if it occurs before he/she begins the 3rd semester (typically 10th grade) of school. CIF will determine if there was any undue influence (i.e. recruiting) involved.
