Season Preview:         Long Reach Ice Hockey Varsity Team

Current Record:             3-0-0

The Alumni bench was crowded as we were joined by many past players.  Of highlight in attendance was Nicole Modeen (founder of Long Reach Lightning), John Poisal (first coach of LR), and Doc Woroneicki in the Alumni penalty bench.  The game started with an unassisted goal by LR lead scorer, Nat Rojas (junior).  Alumni Brad Pryor (all time LR lead in goals and assists) evened the score with an assist by Ethan Rosenthal.  The first period ended in a tie.  However, the LR Lightning team broke out ahead by a goal by Nathan Sesto (sophomore) with an assist by Nat Rojas, followed by another goal by Rojas, and a goal by Curtis Sample (2nd lead scorer on LR and sophomore) with an assist by Rojas.  In the beginning of the third period, Alumni Dan Gonzales had a goal with an assist by Joe Carr (Modeen Award 07 recipient).  But the intense training and practice pushed the current LR varsity to victory with another goal by Nat Rojas, assisted by Curtis Sample and Andrew Metzger, a goal by Curtis Sample assisted by Mike Dattaro, and the final goal by Nat Rojas assisted by Andrew Metzger and Nathan Sesto.  Of course the tradition of all Alumni jumping on the ice with 15 seconds left in the 3rd period still left the final score LR Lightning;7 and Alumni;2.  Photos of the game can be seen on our web site under Photo Album – Alumni.

(excerpt from Howard Conference 2005-2006 Season Preview Press Release)

LRHS has admittedly overachieved since the team was formed four years ago and went 0-10.  Maintaining that effort will be tough as the Lightning graduated some key players from last year’s team that went 9-3-0, including MSHL all-stars Jay Chancellor and Eric Feigenheimer.  Last year, the Lightning won the A division and advanced to the quarterfinals of the state playoffs, eventually losing to Churchill.  Returning MSHL all-star goalie Zach Thompson should keep Long Reach in many games as the Lightning move up to the AA division.  The other good news is that Long Reach still has senior captain Brad Pryor whose 22 points in 11 games last season led all Lightning forwards.  In addition to Pryor and sophomore Jared Bosley (14 points in 12 games) Long Reach adds freshman Nat Rojas, an exciting and fast player.  Long Reach’s strengths have always been in its team play and its defense.  It should be interesting to see how Long Reach fares in the more difficult AA division.
