September 29, 2011

PROVIDENCE, RI - Brown University head women's lacrosse coach Keely McDonald '00 has announced the addition of 13 talented newcomers, set to join the Bears this fall. The 12 members of the Class of 2015 and one member of the Class of 2012, nine of whom were high school All-Americans, represent nine different states with three players from California and two each from Connecticut and Pennsylvania. Also represented are Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Virginia.

"This group adds crucial depth and exciting athleticism to the team," said McDonald. "They are a diverse, aggressive and talented class who will make an immediate impact this year and be powerful future leaders for Brown Lacrosse. Our first-players are high-level student-athletes from winning high school programs. At our first few practices of the year, it has been interesting watching them mesh with the returners and work to make a name for themselves at the college level." [...]

Bulldog Women’s Soccer Snags Five All-SCIAC Selections
November 8, 2011

On Tuesday, the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) office released the 2011 All-SCIAC women's soccer teams, which included five honorees from the University of Redlands. Senior forward Fionna Connolly (Salem, OR) headlines the squad's accolades by picking up her second consecutive First-Team honor, while junior midfielder Kendall Pegan (Lafayette, CA) joins her on the First Team. Senior midfielder Maddy Phillips (Seattle, WA), senior defender Emily van den Bosch (Arcadia, CA), and junior forward Samantha Rivera (Thousand Oaks, CA) represent the Bulldogs on the Second Team.[...]

As an integral contributor to the Bulldogs' midfield, Pegan nabs her first career All-Conference award as a member of the First Team. During the 2011 campaign, she dished out the second-most assists (6) on the team, which included five during conference competition. Against the Poets, she twice landed on the stat sheet by setting up Connolly on two of her three goals.

ABOUT BUCKNELL

The Bison are coming off their first win — and goals — of the season in a 2-1 victory over winless Maryland-Baltimore County on Sept. 4. Kayla Yee scored the winner with 1 minute, 10 seconds remaining in the second half after Liz Dwornik got Bucknell on the board earlier in the frame. But what the Bison have lacked in offense this season has been made up for on the defensive end. The team has surrendered just five goals in four games — three of them resulting in 1-0 losses to open the season against St. Bonaventure, Buffalo and Canisius in August. Sandita McDermott and Colleen Garrehy have started two games apiece in goal behind a four-back defense anchored by Corinne Collins and Casey Crowley. The Bison were scheduled to play Wednesday at Binghamton, but the game was canceled due to heavy rain and flooding in the area.

Miramonte opened their season against Piedmont High School on Wednesday evening. Piedmont and Miramonte are no strangers to each other as the two teams met last season in the quarterfinals of the North Coast Section Playoffs. This time there would be no need for the game to be settled in overtime though, as the Mats took the field with a depleted roster. Key injuries caused the visiting Miramonte to not be at full strength. The Mats look to rebound at home next week against Hayward on Wednesday night

Girl’s Soccer Team Gains Momentum

February 4, 2011 • Michael Roe

After a somewhat sluggish start to their season, the women’s soccer team is hoping to gain momentum as they enter the second half of their season. The team had to adjust to a new head coach, Akeem Rashadi, while the team’s previous coach, Mohamed Mohamed, is currently out on leave with plans to return later in the season as assistant coach.

After suffering a 0-2 loss to rival Campolindo on Dec. 17, a 0-0 tie against Dublin on Jan. 7, and a 1-1 tie against Alhambra on Jan. 12, the women’s soccer team aims to improve their 2-2-3 record. Currently, the team is fourth in their league division.

After the Alhambra game, the team officially started their second half of the season, where they play each league team once more.

“We play each team twice, so after the Alhambra game we have a chance to redeem ourselves,” said co-captain Mackenzie Martin ‘11.

Unfortunately, the team lost their first game of the second part of the season 3-4 to Acalanes Jan. 14, with Martin scoring the team’s first two goals of the game.

This year’s team has an unusual dynamic, with eight freshmen, five sophomores, two juniors, and only one senior, Martin, on the varsity team. But the team is still talented.

“As one of the team’s captains, I’ve seen some of the younger players step up to the challenge of playing on the varsity team at such a young age. I’ve bonded a lot with the younger players this year,” said Martin.

Some of the young talent includes Megan Reid ‘14, Coco Pearce ‘13 and Jane Fessenden ‘14.

Miramonte beat Doherty Valley 2-1 Jan. 26, with star freshman Megan Reid scoring after arriving at half time after her basketball game. Reid plays on both the women’s varsity soccer and basketball teams, having to arrive late to soccer games due to basketball.

Miramonte tied Las Lomas last Friday with a score of 1-1.

Sports Spotlight: Miramonte's Megan Reid

Reid — only a freshman — is playing two varsity sports at the same time.
By Jim Mannion | Email the author | January 19, 2011
On Jan. 11, a guard on the Miramonte High girls basketball team scored seven points and added five steals for the Matadors in their victory over Las Lomas. The following night, she was on the soccer field for Miramonte, and provided an assist and stellar play at forward in a 1-1 draw with Alhambra.

Two days later, she was back on the hardwood – in her first match against Lamorinda-rival Campolindo – and chipped in eight points and three steals in the Matadors' two-point loss. Moments after the basketball game, she raced out to the soccer field, laced up her cleats for the second half of the Miramonte’s 4-3 loss to Acalanes, and knocked in a goal in the 62nd minute.

Just another week in the life of Miramonte freshman Megan Reid.

“She is the most impressive freshman I have ever coached,” Miramonte basketball coach Kelly Sopak said. “She has the mental toughness of a senior.”

Reid, who also played on the Miramonte varsity water polo team in the fall, is not only managing the unique situation of playing two varsity sports at the same time, she's becoming a standout on both fields.

She has started on the hoops team and helped it race to a 14-3 overall record and is the leading goal scorer on the soccer team.

“On the surface, I would say it is the most impressive feat I have seen in all my years of coaching,” Sopak said. “I have known Megan and her family since she was in the second grade and coached her for the last three years in club basketball, and quite honestly, this is so normal for her I have not even had time to reflect on it. Simply —that is Megan.”

Reid has been active in both sports since she was 5 years old. She started in the CYO and OYA ranks and has continued through club teams — in which she still competes — along with her busy high-school schedule.

While athletes tend to focus on one or two sports in the course of the high school calendar year – three-sport players are becoming more uncommon – Reid has chosen to continue with the two winter sports and is considering track or swimming in the spring.

Although she uses her hands in one sport and feet in the other, Reid feels the different dynamics of each give her an advantage.

“I think that playing soccer has helped me on the basketball court because it allows me to see the entire court, and see who is open,” Reid said. “Basketball has helped me (in soccer) in the way that I am able to make my way throughout players smoothly and my ability to change my speed whenever needed. They both keep me in good shape for one another.”

Sopak agreed, and said Reid will continue to adjust as she becomes more comfortable.

“She plays tough like a soccer player,” Sopak said. “But, she is now learning that basketball and soccer have different speeds, and soccer you play in your area of the field, but in basketball you have to play the full 84 feet. With our tempo, that can be challenging, even for Megan.”

With the time it takes to compete at the varsity level, the big question is how can an athlete in her first year in high school pull it all off? The answer: Reid is honing her time-management skills.

“During this season I have about four hours of sports a day, and to get my homework done I do what I can in the classrooms,” Reid said. “If I have more, I'll go into the library during lunch, and whatever I have left I will finish in about an hour at home.”

Although Sopak is happy that Reid is able to balance her time between both sports, he said he realizes this is a unique situation.

“This would be very difficult for any athlete to attempt and I would discourage it,” Sopak said. “Megan is unique, not only in her skill set but in her mental approach to the game and her work ethic in both sports. She is natural leader and kids respond to her.”

Since Reid has played in a variety of sports most of her life, her thoughts down the road might turn to college athletics. But for now, she is enjoying her life as a student-athlete, and taking it one day, and practice, and game at a time.

“At this point, I want to just be able to keep my grades up and enjoy quality time with my friends on the side,” Reid said. “I am only in my first year of high school, so I have time to decide what I would like to do. I would love to play any of my sports in college because they bring me so much joy and also great friends.”

Girls Soccer: Miramonte and Alhambra Finish with Draw

Martin scores goal with 10 minutes to play in first half.
By Jim Mannion | Email the author | 12:38am

Miramonte 1, Alhambra 1

The Star: Forward Mackenzie Martin knocked in a first-half goal on Senior Night to open the game’s scoring.

The Turning Point: With Miramonte holding a 1-0 lead, Alhambra senior Serena DeChristofaro booted a goal high into the net from 25 yards out to tie the score.

The Quote: “It was nice for (Martin) to get a goal on Senior Night,” Miramonte coach Akeem Rashidi said of Mackenzie Martin’s first-half score.

What’s Next: Miramonte hosts Acalanes on Friday.

Bottom Line: After some offensive fireworks in the final 10 minutes of the first half, both teams settled in on defense to prevent further scoring by either side.

——————————

After a tightly played opening 20 minutes of play, the Miramonte High girls soccer team used a goal by senior Mackenzie Martin and stingy defense in the second half to secure a 1-1 tie against Alhambra in Diablo Foothill Athletic League action on Wednesday night in Orinda.

Playing in front of the home fans on Senior Night, Martin found the back of the net off a pass from freshman Megan Reid from 12 yards out, scoring her fourth goal of the season.

The tie leaves Miramonte with a 4-4-5 overall record and 1-2-3 in DFAL play.

The two teams took turns moving the ball up and down the field in the first 20 minutes of the game – with neither team gaining an advantage – before the offenses began to settle in.

Reid – also a starter on the Matadors basketball team – attempted a header that shot just wide left of the goal, and moments later, found Martin on a crossing pass, who opened the game’s scoring with a goal from 12 yards out.

“It was nice for (Martin) to get a goal on Senior Night,” Miramonte coach Akeem Rashidi said.

The lead did not last long. Alhambra standout Serena DeChristofaro responded quickly.

Three minutes after the goal, the senior boomed in a perfectly placed shot from 25 yards out that sailed high in the net, tying the score at one.

“She’s our senior and playmaker,” Alhambra coach John Badger said of DeChristofaro. “It was a fabulous goal – world class, really.”

Badger was happy with the way his team bounced back after Miramonte started the scoring.

“I thought we played well – I was disappointed that we gave up the first goal, but our response was excellent,” he said.

Alhambra controlled the ball for much of the second half, led by DeChristofaro and juniors Ellen Griffith and Natalie Smith, but was unable to connect for a second goal.

Smith made a nice run and shot that sailed just high of the goal midway through the second half, and minutes later, set up a passing sequence and shot that ended with a save by Miramonte goalie Mali Tehaney.

“She played well,” Rashidi said of his freshman goalkeeper. “She plays center-midfield on her club team but we told her we need her to play goalie and she’s been doing a good job.”

After two free kick attempts for Alhambra by DeChristofaro, the Miramonte offense went back to work, putting together its best attempt at a game-winning goal.

Martin raced down the right sidelines, setting up a shot by Reid that was saved by Alhambra defender Jenna Armstrong.

“I thought we came out a little flat in the second half,” Rashidi said. “In the first half, we were punching the ball through, but we came out flat (in the second) .”

Alhambra scrambled in the game’s waning minutes, firing multiple shots at goal, but the Matador’s defense held up.

Just seconds before the final whistle, Tehaney made an excellent save for Miramonte off a shot fired in by Smith.

“We just needed a little more precision in the final minutes,” Badger said.

Tehaney finished with seven saves, while Alhambra’s freshman goalie – Gabby Vinco – saved three shots.

“She’s been playing great,” Badger said of Vinco, who has been playing with a sprained finger.

Miramonte played their first game of the new year. After having a two week break from their last match at the Tri Valley Tournament, Miramonte attempted to knock off the rust and find a rhythm. Dublin started off strong with consistent offensive pressure. Miramonte's defense was tested repeatedly. They bent, but did not break. Miramonte was out shot 16 to 6 for the match. Cold weather proved to be the nemesis of both teams, and so the best that the Mats and Gaels could muster was a draw. Mali Tehaney once again had a solid night in goal securing 8 saves in the contest. Next up, Alhambra.

Miramonte Girls Soccer Preview: Rashidi Takes the Reins

Perennial powerhouse Miramonte is young but talented this season

Mark the Calendar: Campolindo rematch, Feb. 2 at Campo. Campo won the first meeting, 2-0.

---------------

Miramonte High Girls soccer Coach Akeem Rashidi is calling this a rebuilding season for his Matadors, but this perennial powerhouse team—five straight league titles—can never be taken lightly.

With nine freshmen on the team, five of them starting, Rashidi expects some rookie mistakes and jitters.

"We're strong, but we're young," said Rashidi, who assisted former coach Mohamed Mohamed the last five seasons and took over this year when Mohamed stepped aside to spend more time with club programs.

"Sometimes we come out scared. If we score early, we dominate, but other games we just hang, hang, hang. We have to get over that," Rashidi said. "We still have a chance to win (the DFAL) - By next year we'll be a dominant team."

Rashidi cites the leadership of MacKenzie Martin, a senior and second-year starter. "She's athletic, she hustles on defense, and she's a leader - she leads by example."

The X factor for Miramonte might be freshman Megan Reid, who will start, alternating between forward and outside wing. One possible drawback: Reid's outstanding athleticism. She's a star in swimming, baseball (yes, with the boys), basketball and, more recently, water polo, so her athletic attention is divided.

"If she commits fully to soccer, she'll be one of the top players in the area," Rashidi said. "I call her a beast - she will outmuscle you and she will outrun you."

Rashidi chalks up Miramonte's consistent success through the years to the team's commitment to "possession soccer," a style that stresses quick, short-to-medium passes—"building the ball forward," as opposed to long downfield passing--and puts a premium on communication, teamwork and patience.

"We like to put the ball on the ground and get the whole team involved," said Rashidi, who played at Concord High. "What we teach is different from what 98 percent of clubs teach. We depend on our system, not individuals."

It all comes down to the experience factor.

"By the second round (of DFAL play), we might be clicking on all cylinders," Rashidi said.

Women’s Soccer Kicks Into Gear
December 16, 2010

The girl’s soccer team has high hopes for the season in spite of having a very young team. After losing five seniors, women’s soccer gained eight freshmen, at least four of whom will be starting. Mali Tehaney ‘14, the new goalie, will have big shoes to fill as she takes the place of Shelby Church ‘10.

“Mali is a hard worker and I think she will help our team a lot,” said co-captain Mackenzie Martin ‘11. The team made it to the semifinals of NCS last year, and will work towards winning it all this year.

“We have a group of young, talented players with a lot of potential. We hope to win league this year to continue our five year streak,” said Martin.

Akeem Rashidi will be head coach while the team’s regular coach, Mohamed Mohamed, is gone for one month. Once he returns, Mohamed will be assistant coach.

“Systematically, we’re the same; style wise, I’m more laid back than Mo,” said Rashidi. Rashidi emphasizes “possession soccer,” which focuses on keeping the ball away from the other team through a series of passes.

Alex Seclow ‘11 and Sophie Fuller ‘13 are also captains this year. The team scrimmaged Alameda Nov. 18 losing 1-2, and Northgate on Dec. 2, with a final score of 2-5.

In the team’s first league game Dec. 8, they lost to Acalanes 1-2. On Dec. 10, they battled Dougherty Valley with a final score of 1-1.

In the second half, as temperatures dropped the pace of the game quickened. Megan Reid made a beautiful header assist and captain Mackenzie Martin finished in the box to build the lead to 2-0 Mats. Miramonte played Dougherty Valley on Friday evening. The Wildcats were coming off a 3-2 victory of Campolindo on Wednesday night, while Miramonte suffered a setback to Acalanes 2-1 on Wednesday. The weather was unseasonably warm for the kick off. Miramonte got the scoring started at the 33rd minute of play as Mackenzie Martin made a nice one v. one move, got past the defender, and finished right to left from 12 yards out. Solid defensive play by the back line and goalkeeper kept the Mats up at halftime 1-0. Second half, Dougherty Valley began to assert themselves offensively. Miramonte had a scoring opportunity on a set piece that Sophie Fuller struck well and hit the crossbar. Stephanie Amack countered with a 35 yard blast that hit the crossbar as well. Dougherty Valley would score in the 77th minute on a corner blasted by #1 Nakaso, and finished by #14 Matsumoto. Final 1-1.

Cross town rivals Acalanes and Miramonte for the opening of league play for the 2010-2011 season. Acalanes got on the board first on a cross by Becca Bostwick that was finished by #17 just outside the 18 yard box to initiate the scoring for the Dons. Mali Tehany made several key saves in the first half to keep the halftime score to a one goal differential.

The second half the Mats got on the board on a steal by Sophie Fuller, who passed up to Coco Pearce, and Pearce kicked a through ball to Megan Reid who avoided the goalie and finished at the 42nd minute mark to even the score at one apiece. Unfortunately, the deadlock would move in the favor of Acalanes when the ball was deflected off a Miramonte defender for an own goal. Final 2-1 Acalanes. Hornets 2, Miramonte 1

Alameda traveled to Orinda for a game against a tough Miramonte team on a chilly Thursday evening. The action opened with Alameda on attack. The Matadors responded with a counter-attack and a Miramonte player advancing the ball straight down the middle of the field and sending it into the goal for a quick lead in the 2nd minute of the game. Alameda continued their attack after the early score, answering in the 12th minute when Sophomore Kaitlyn Crooker launched a high shot into the goal from 20 yards out. In the 20th minute, while pressuring the Miramonte defense, Senior Jamie Banks blocked an attempt to clear the ball with her body, causing the ball to fall short where Senior Nadia Mounzih quickly recovered it and sent it to the back of the net for the lead. The half ended with Alameda up 2 -1.

Both teams came out strong in the second half. Alameda moved the ball well and had the edge on possession. Strong defense by Senior Lauren Upp, Junior Ciara Morris, and Freshmen Sara Jo Ciapponi and Justine Silvers, along with good goalkeeping by Junior Sydney Lewis, preserved Alameda's lead. The entire team played well, earning a well-deserved win against a strong opponent.

For the game, Alameda had 13 shots, 6 of which were on goal, 2 corner kicks, 1 direct kick, and 3 keeper saves. Miramonte had 9 shots, 4 of which were on goal, 5 corner kicks, 8 direct kicks, and 4 keeper saves.

California gave Hawaii a taste of the Golden State with an 8-1 victory over the Rainbow Wahine on Sept. 5. Morgan netted a hat trick, bringing her weekend total to five goals. The Golden Bears also got goals from Lauren Battung, Katie Benz, Katie Suits, Mekenna DeBack and Kate Bennett. Cal outshot Hawaii, 21-9, bolstered by a 13-shot second half. The match concluded this weekend's Cal Invitational, which saw the Bears be the only team to finish at a perfect 2-0. Morgan, Battung, freshman Megan Indermill and junior Katie Suits were all named to the all-tournament team.

BERKELEY
- Whatever jitters the No. 14 California women's soccer team had at the beginning of its 2010 season opener, they did not last very long. The Golden Bears scored in the seventh minute and then took a 2-0 lead in the second thanks to an own goal by Loyola Marymount to defeat the Lions, 2-1, on Friday afternoon at Edwards Stadium. "I thought we did very well," Cal head coach Neil McGuire said. "I think that we controlled the game for large parts of it. Obviously there is some nervousness, especially with the younger players, but I thought they all did extremely well." The Bears established the tone of the match with a goal at 6:04. Sophomore forward/midfielder Lauren Battung passed to junior Miranda White, who chipped it in from the right side of the box for Cal's first goal of the season. "It was a great goal," McGuire said of White's score. "Miranda has the ability to get herself on the end of things. She's a player that we've played all over the field, and she's very, very good no matter where you put her." While the scoreboard remained stagnant, displaying the 1-0 Cal lead for a full 67 minutes, the Bears' kick count kept creeping higher and higher. At 73:08, the ball finally made its way pasts the posts again. Freshman Mekenna DeBack took her first shot of her Cal career at 72:41, but a LMU defender blocked it and the Bears earned a corner kick. Senior co-captain Emily Shibata took the corner from the far side and crossed it perfectly into the box. After a scuffle, a LMU player pushed the ball into the net to distance the Bears, 2-0, thanks to the own goal. [...]

Shelby Church (Miramonte HS Class of 2010) at USC
September 8, 2010

LAST WEEK
USC emerged as the winner of the Under Armour Invitational last weekend in Fullerton, Calif., after the Trojans tied up No. 18 UNC Greensboro in a scoreless affair before beating Purdue 1-0 on the final day of play. USC held the advantage on shots 17-6 against UNC Greensboro but was unable to finish off the Spartans in coming away with its second straight tie. The Trojans made sure to get on the board in their next match, however, with senior Megan Ohai finishing off a free kick from Karter Haug in the 10th minute of play. USC produced 13 shots to Purdue's eight in the game as the Trojan defense shut down the Boilermakers. Freshman goalkeeper Shelby Church notched two more shutouts with the weekend's work, while Ohai moved up in the career rankings to stand No. 9 in career goals (15) and No. 6 in career game-winning goals (7) thanks to her winner vs. Purdue. For their efforts in charging up USC to an undefeated weekend, four Trojans were named to the Under Armour Invitational All-Tournament Team: Carly Butcher, Alyssa Dávila, Karter Haug and Megan Ohai.

FRESH START
Five freshmen started USC's first game of the year, and it's been a similar story ever since. The strength of the Trojan newcomers has been most visible on the front lines with Haley Boysen and Elizabeth Eddy starting all five games to date for the Trojans. Freshman goalkeeper Shelby Church also has locked into goal for every game. All told, six true freshmen have appeared in the starting lineup, not including redshirt freshman Morgan Morrow's recent debut after being sidelined last year with a knee injury. Morrow has set up shop in the back to replace injured junior defender Chelsea Buehning, who tore her ACL in USC's 2010 season opener.

CHURCH'S STATEMENT
After getting her first career shutout under her belt with a 1-0 win at TCU on August 27, USC's freshman goalkeeper Shelby Church delivered another powerful statement in the very next game. Faced with a penalty kick that threatened to put USC down two goals in the first half at Texas, Church made a clutch save against the PK to keep the Trojans within reach, and USC would equalize late in the game. Church has since helped secure back-to-back shutouts for the Trojan defense in the past two games, as she currently holds three shutouts, 17 saves and two goals against to kick off her career as a Trojan.

CAGE FIGHTERS
The question mark left on USC's roster had been lingering around the goalkeeping slot left open by the graduation of All-American Kristin Olsen and backup Brittany Massro. Khosroshahin considers the problem solved. The Trojan goalkeeping corps is back up to three, with Shelby Church holding the reins for the starting slot and Emily Miller and Anne Turner both standing tall as talented options between the pipes.

Hayward vs. Miramonte NCS Recap
by John Fuller
2/17/2010

Miramonte came out early and scored at the eight minute mark. Alex Seclow shot on frame, Hayward goalie, Jackie Rivas, deflected the ball and Ashley Kawaguchi smashed in the ball for the initial goal of the contest. Miramonte had many chances including a ball hitting off the goalpost, but the score would remain 1-0 at the intermission. Miramonte's defense took charge in the second half shutting down Hayward's high scoring offense. Mackenzie Martin kept up her scoring pace by finishing a one v. one breakaway at the 77 minute mark. This would be all the scoring the Mats team would need as they finished out the contest 2-0. Shelby Church, goalie, and the Mats defense recorded their 5th shutout of the season. Next up for Miramonte will be cross-town rival Campolindo on Saturday night at Miramonte High School at 7 p.m.

NCS DIVISION II: Lots of gray area in this balanced division. ... No. 1 seed Bishop O'Dowd, which plays terrific defense, could have an edge, at the very least based on its two draws with Castro Valley. ... Miramonte, which won the last two NCS 2A titles, has been up-and-down. Berean Christian has been hot. The Eagles' 1-0 loss to College Park last week in the battle for second place of the Diablo Valley Athletic League was their first since Dec. 21. ... Unbeaten Albany, the No. 3 seed, is another compelling team. The Cougars are definitely enjoying a magical season. They have beaten No. 6 seed Las Lomas, No. 13 St. Mary's, No. 14 Piedmont and tied No. 7 Acalanes.

Here are the East Bay Girls Soccer rankings (as of Feb. 15).

Note: All records will reflect matches only against section opponents.

1, Castro Valley (21-0-2): Hard to separate Trojans from EBAL's top two because they haven't played, but CV's done enough to merit the top pick.

2, Carondelet (12-4-3): Impressive EBAL title run capped by wins over NCS Div. I No. 7 seed Monte Vista (1-0) and No. 5 California (2-0).

3, San Ramon Valley (13-2-3): Overlook the Wolves at your peril. SRV's lone losses against section opponents came in their first and last league games.

4, California (11-4-6): No. 5 seed Grizzlies disappointed to not get a home game in NCS.

5, Clayton Valley (14-3-3): DVAL champion Eagles are on a roll; haven't lost since Dec. 22.

6, Bishop O'Dowd (15-1-5): Dragons close HAAL season with six straight wins, outscoring foes 18-1; have a big shot at Division II title.

7, Amador Valley (10-6-6): Dons follow 3-1 stunner over Carondelet with wins over Granada and rival Foothill.

8, Monte Vista (11-8-4): Inspired Mustangs brim with confidence after upsetting rival San Ramon Valley on Nicki Sharpe header.

9, Liberty (17-2-4): BVAL champions can enhance fine season with a win over Berkeley.

10 (tie), College Park (12-5-4): Falcons clinch second place in the DVAL by besting Berean Christian 1-0.

10 (tie), Albany (20-0-1): Cougars enjoy historic unbeaten regular season under coach David Gallagher

In the hunt: Acalanes, Berean Christian, Berkeley, Campolindo, College Park, Foothill, Freedom, Miramonte.

Miramonte vs. Las Lomas
by John Fuller
2/12/2010

Miramonte played their final game of the regular season on the road against Las Lomas High School from Walnut Creek. The Knights are battling for an NCS playoff spot and needed a victory to complete a final home stand. It was Senior Night for Las Lomas as they paid tribute to their graduating players on the team. The game was a defensive struggle as both teams had opportunities, but failed to capitalize in the first half. The score was locked at 0-0 at half-time. Las Lomas controlled possession throughout the contest as evidenced by a 19-8 shot differential. Senior goalie, Shelby Church, played heroically with 13 saves, many of them acrobatic stops that kept Miramonte in the contest. It was not to be, as Las Lomas took advantage of their one and only corner kick in the second half. Dana Peacock delivered a cross that was headed in by Taylor Matson at the 68 minute mark. That would be enough as the Knights jousted the Mats by a final score of 1-0.

Miramonte 3, Acalanes 0: Even with their standout offensive player sitting on the bench, the host Matadors were able to clinch at least a share of their fourth consecutive Diablo Foothill Athletic League title with a victory over the Dons.

Junior Mackenzie Martin provided more than enough offensive firepower with her first career hat trick for Miramonte (6-2-3 DFAL).

Martin, who had just three goals total the rest of the season, first put the Matadors ahead in the 24th minute. She then gave her team some insurance, dribbling past defenders and finding the corner of the net on goals in the 50th and 75th minutes.

It was the first game Miramonte played without Cal-bound senior Mekenna DeBack, who is out with another injury to the same foot that kept her sidelined for much of the club season. DeBack was responsible for 11 of the Matadors' 18 goals before the game.

"With Mekenna out there was (a little more pressure on me), but I didn't really think about it and just went out and played," Martin said.

The Matadors and Dons (5-3-3 DFAL) entered the game tied with Campolindo for first place in league. Miramonte can secure the league title outright with a win or a tie against Las Lomas on Friday.

Acalanes vs. Miramonte Recap
2/10/10
by John Fuller

An inspired Miramonte team opened the evening with Senior Night festivities. Miramonte's Senior Night paid tribute to the players who would be playing their final regular season home game of the season for the Mats. This would be a high-stakes contest against cross-town rival Acalanes. The winner would regain first place of the Diablo Foothill Athletic League (D.F.A.L). Miramonte scored first on a give and go from Coco Pearce to Mackenzie Martin. Martin buried the ball into the back of the net giving the home team an early lead 1-0. The score would remain the same heading into the break. In second half action, Martin and Pearce would work their magic one more time. Pearce threading the needle on a nifty interior pass as Martin would not be denied on her one v. one with the Acalanes goalie at the 50 minute mark. The night belonged to Martin as she scored her third and final goal on a break away at the 75 minute mark. Martin recorded a hat trick for the evening and sent the seniors off with a smile knowing their final regular season home game would result in a much needed victory. Seniors Shelby Church and Katherine Cuyler helped Miramonte record their 4th shut out of the season with 9 saves and 5 steals respectively. Miramonte concludes the regular season on the road against Las Lomas.

Lady Mats Climb to First

February 5, 2010 • Caroline Cook

“Since we have a lot of young players, we are doing really well working as a team,” said captain McKenna DeBack ‘10. “We are building and improving, and working hard in practices.”

This season, the four returning seniors are the team’s secret weapons. With Shelby Church ‘10 in goal, Katherine Cuyler ‘10 commanding the defense, Marissa Crosetti ‘10 leading the midfield, and DeBack up top at forward, the Lady Mats are the team to beat this year.

“We (the four remaining seniors) play possession style and are all comfortable playing this way because we’ve played together for years,” said Crosetti. “We are all trying to return back to the way we played at Lamorinda (Soccer Club).”

Even though the Lady Mats lost to Campolindo on Dec. 16, by a score of 1-2, the Cougars remain their main rival. “Although Campolindo is our toughest competition this year, the season is all up in the air and many teams who beat us earlier are losing now,” said DeBack. Another unique aspect of the team is the number of siblings and underclassmen.

“We have twins and some players who don’t play club soccer, in addition to many freshmen on the team,” added DeBack. “We are a brand new team starting out fresh and when we (the seniors) graduate, it will be a very young team.”

The Lady Mats tied with Las Lomas (0-0) on Wed. Jan. 13. and tied with Alhambra (0-0) on Fri. Jan. 15.

Once again, the three Lamorinda high school girls’ soccer teams are at the top of the league standings. In DFAL, Miramonte sits in first with a record of 5-2-2. They are closely followed by Campolindo, who holds a record of 5-3-1, and Acalanes, who is 4-2-2.

On Monday, Feb. 1, when the Lady Mats rematched Campolindo, DeBack scored two goals and Coco Pearce ‘13 scored one goal in the second half. The Mats came out victorious, with a final score of 3-1.

Noria Mitchell delivered a strong corner that was half-volleyed by Megan Zummo into the left corner of the box at the 48 minute mark to give the Gaels a 1-0 lead on Dublin's Senior Night. Miramonte countered with a hustle play by Mackenzie Martin who took a deflected ball on a one v. one break away and blasted the ball through the posts at the 56 minute mark. Strong goalie play by USC-bound Shelby Church kept the Mats in the contest with 8 saves. The Mats next match will be Wednesday, Feb. 10th against cross-town rival Acalanes. Neil McGuire Inks 10 Recruits

Women's soccer signs impressive class.

BERKELEY - The perennially successful California women's soccer program has signed 10 talented recruits to National Letters of Intent, head coach Neil McGuire announced Thursday. Kate Bennett, Genessee Daughetee, Mekenna deBack, Kaitlyn Fitzpatrick, Emily Kruger, Emi Lawson, Grace Leer, Rachel Mercik, Kathleen Messinger and Bronwyn Studman will all be joining the Golden Bears in fall 2010. The players - who range from California natives to Washington products to an Aussie - bring a wide array of skill sets as well as national team experience.

"We believe this class continues our strong tradition of attracting some of the most talented and well-rounded student-athletes in the nation to Cal," Cal head coach Neil McGuire said. "Our new student-athletes' national team knowledge, combined with their leadership capabilities will make this class very dynamic and exciting to watch. Additionally, these students are well-equipped off the pitch to handle the rigors of Cal's academics."

The Bears finished the season at an 11-9-1 clip for the program's sixth-consecutive winning record and the 23nd in school history. Cal went 4-5-0 in the Pac-10 to finish tied for sixth in the competitive conference. With an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, this year's selection marked Cal's 17th playoff bid in program history, the 11th in the last 12 years and the sixth straight. Thanks to a 2-1 overtime win over Auburn in the opening round, the Bears advanced to the second round, in which they lost, 3-0, to host and No. 1-seeded Florida State.

What Neil McGuire Says: Mekenna is one of the most natural goal scorers I have seen in quite some time. Her speed allows her to create space for herself behind defensive lines and she can finish equally well with both feet. She is a feisty competitor who will be a great asset to our team.

Campolindo Valley vs. Miramonte
2/1/2010
by John Fuller

Campolindo faced Miramonte for the second time this season in an all important match for both teams. Campolindo came into the contest as the league leaders in the conference with Miramonte tied for second with cross-town rival Acalanes at 4-2-2. Both teams were active in the first half with little scoring to show for the effort. The game was tied 0-0 at the mid-point of the contest. Mekenna deBack continued on her torrid scoring pace with a 35 yard smash into the upper left hand corner to give the Mats a 1-0 lead early in the second half. deBack would find the mark once more as she cracked the ball left to right for her second goal of the evening. Campolindo would not go down quietly as they countered with a goal by Kaelyn Caspillo off a missed header by Valerie Margerum that hit the crossbar at the 64 minute mark. Coco Pearce blasted a 30 yard shot that hit the upper left corner of the net to conclude the scoring for the evening. Goalie Shelby Church held the Cougars to one goal with 8 saves for the evening. The final 3-1 Mats. This brings Miramonte's record to 5-2-2 in league play.

DFAL PARITY: The Diablo Foothill Athletic League is about as evenly balanced as can be. A look at the standings showed Campolindo (4-2-1), Acalanes (4-2-1), Dougherty Valley (3-2-1) and Miramonte (3-2-2) in a virtual dead-heat for first. Heck, even Las Lomas (2-1-4-) is in the mix.

Here is a look at the East Bay rankings (as of Jan. 26):

1, San Ramon Valley (13-2-1, 6-1-2 EBAL): Wolves looked good in second half against Carondelet. Look out, they're rounding into form.

2 (tie), Carondelet (8-3-3, 7-0-2 EBAL): Rogan Dolan keeps scoring, the defense is exceptional, but the EBAL tests keep coming.

2 (tie), Castro Valley (18-0-2, 7-0-2 HAAL): The Trojans, ranked fifth in the country by ESPN Rise Fab 50, still can't slay the O'Dowd Dragons. HAAL powers tie for the second time.

4, California (9-3-3, 4-2-3 EBAL): Grizzlies fought Carondelet to 0-0 draw in a makeup match, a day after the Cougars battled SRV.

5, Clayton Valley (9-3-3, 6-0-1 DVAL): Eagles are 2-2-1 against EBAL teams, have good depth.

6, Bishop O'Dowd (9-1-5, 5-0-3 HAAL): Dragons get heroic goaltending in draw with Trojans.

7, Amador Valley (6-5-6, 2-3-4 EBAL): Looks like the Dons are finally rolling. They're 2-0-2 in their last four EBAL games with eight goals.

8, Monte Vista (9-6-3, 3-3-3 EBAL): Young and nicked-up Mustangs snap two-game skid with 2-0 win over Foothill.

9, Liberty (11-2-4, 6-1-2 BVAL): Lions upended by Heritage for their first BVAL loss.

10, College Park (9-3-3, 5-1-1 DVAL): Falcons tie Berean Chriistian, prepping for DVAL showdown with Clayton Valley on Feb. 4.

The three Lamorinda high school girls soccer teams are usually all near the top of the league standings every year. This year is no different as the three teams are currently in the top three places.

Acalanes and Campolindo are currently tied for first in the DFAL with identical 4-2-1 league records. Acalanes is 9-5-1 overall, while Campolindo has a 6-2-1 overall record. Miramonte is sitting in third place in the DFAL with a 3-2-2 league record.

The Matadors will look to move into second place if they are able to beat the Cougars when they meet on Friday at Miramonte. If the Cougars are able to beat Miramonte, then they will be playing for sole possession of first place against Acalanes the following Wednesday, Feb. 3.

Matador Defense Shuts Down Dons

By Alex Crook

Acalanes girls' soccer boasts a large fan base-however; on Friday, January 8th the crowd's support was not enough to bolster the Dons offense. Acalanes took on Miramonte in a rivalry match-up and the Matadors defense, led by senior goalkeeper Shelby Church, shut out the Dons, 2-0. The shutout was Church's first of the season and Acalanes' first home loss on the year. Church made 12 saves.

Visiting Miramonte entered the match with an even 2-2 record in league play, which now improves to 3-2. The Dons came in at 3-1, but dropped to 3-2. Both teams now find themselves in a three-way tie for first place in DFAL with Campolindo.

The match began slowly, with a couple of scoring opportunities for both teams. Then at the 17:32 mark, Matador senior forward and captain, McKenna Deback, found the far side of the net open, beating Dons' senior goalkeeper Angela LaScala-Gruenwald for the easy 1-0 lead. Eleven minutes later at 6:31, Miramonte sophomore forward Katherine Fearing was denied a two-goal lead by LaScala-Gruenwald, who deflected the ball out of the goalie box.

Heading into halftime, Miramonte was up 1-0.

With 27:46 left in the second half, the visiting Mats struck again, this time the goal came off the foot of junior forward MacKenzie Martin.

Acalanes offensive attack had multiple looks, but the Matadors defense prevented the Dons from capitalizing.

"We put in a good effort. We were coming off of a long break, we played well, and these were two good teams," said Acalanes coach Tom Ginocchio.

The Mats, riding a two-game winning streak, returned home to battle Las Lomas on January 13th; the game proved to be a defensive battle ending in a 0-0 tie. That same day Acalanes hit the road for a game at Dougherty Valley, which also resulted in a tie, 1-1. Campolindo beat Alahambra, 2-1, for the lead in the DFAL.

January 15th the three-way tie was restored. Acalanes defeated Dublin 2-0, Campolindo tied 0-0 with Las Lomas and Miramonte tied with Alahambra 0-0. All three Lamorinda teams are now 3-2-2.

East Bay girls soccer notebook and rankings: Carondelet heating up in the EBAL

By Matt Schwab
Contra Costa Times

After learning a few tough lessons in its debut season in the East Bay Athletic League season last winter, a young Carondelet soccer team has been doing the schooling in 2009-10.

The Cougars gave a complete effort in a 3-0 win over Monte Vista Friday night at De La Salle. Junior Rogan Dolan's hat trick gave her 11 goals on the season, and the attack flowed through fellow junior Kory Lamet.

Carondelet is adept at switching the flow of play. A well-organized defense helped the Cougars outscore its first six opponents a combined 15-3 in EBAL play.

Buckle up for Friday night's San Ramon Valley-Carondelet EBAL battle at De La Salle, when the Wolves will try to avenge a 3-1 loss in the first round.

Unbeaten Castro Valley, the gold standard of the Gold Division at the Tri-Valley Classic, could go unscathed into the North Coast Section playoffs and draw the No. 1 seed. The Trojans (17-0-1) have amassed 74 goals overall and are ranked fifth in the ESPN Rise FAB 50 for the winter season.

The Cougars get the slight nod as the top-ranked team in the Bay Area News Group's East Bay online soccer rankings:

Here is a look at the rankings (as of Jan. 18):

1, Carondelet (7-3-2): The Cougars (7-3-2, 6-0 EBAL) are one win away from an unbeaten, untied first half of EBAL play. Things always get tighter in the second half, however, as the teams make adjustments.

2, San Ramon Valley (11-2-1): Gunning for an unprecedented fifth straight North Coast Section 3A title, Wolves won the Tri-Valley Classic Invitation Division.

3, Castro Valley (17-0-1): Could this be the Year of the Trojans? Powerful team doesn't play as tough a schedule as the top two, but is to be feared. Key date: Trojans travel to O'Dowd Jan. 26 (the Dragons tied them 0-0 Dec. 10).

4, California: The energetic Grizzlies (8-3-2) have lost two of the last three entering Tuesday night's home battle with Carondelet.

5, Clayton Valley: Solid Eagles (8-3-2) own a win over Carondelet, losses to Monte Vista and California.

6, Monte Vista (6-4-3): Mustangs rebounded from a 3-0 loss to Carondelet with a 1-0 nonleague win over previously unbeaten Liberty.

7, Liberty (10-1-4): Emerging Lions, who suffered an NCS heartbreaker against Amador Valley last season, have been roaring all season.

8, Foothill (4-5-2): Rebuilding

NCS 3A runner-up lost top returner Alesha Blair to a knee injury, but the Falcons still drew with SRV 1-1, fell just 2-1 to Carondelet.

9, Bishop O'Dowd (7-1-4): Dragons stub toe in 2-2 draw with Redwood Christian; have some impressive results, however.

10, College Park (7-3-2): Solid three game win streak snapped by Clayton Valley.

In the hunt: Livermore (4-5-5) Amador Valley (5-5-4), Miramonte (3-2-2), Campolindo (6-2), Berean Christian (10-5-1). Acalanes (9-5-1).

What is a little more clear is that the three Lamorinda teams — Acalanes, Miramonte and Campolindo — should be at or near the top of the standings in the end if recent history is an indicator.

Miramonte has won the last three DFAL titles, and the Matadors and Campolindo have combined to take home five of the last six North Coast Section 2A championships.

But Acalanes began the season with five wins, including victories in its first two DFAL matches.

And after just four league games, there's not an undefeated team remaining. What it all means: The DFAL title is completely up for grabs.

Campolindo goes into the holiday break as perhaps the hottest team of the three. The Cougars earned wins in two rivalry matches the week of Dec. 13, beating Miramonte 2-1 and Acalanes 1-0.

"(It was) staying focused," Campolindo coach Ernesto Silva said after beating the Matadors on Dec. 16. "It was something we discussed — we needed to make sure we didn't get emotional about playing against an extraordinary rival like Miramonte."

Sabine Wetzel and Nicole Patera tallied the Cougars' goals against the Matadors while Valerie Margerum was able to control Miramonte's standout forward, reigning league MVP McKenna deBack.

DeBack is one of five returning starters for a team that went unbeaten and finished with a 14-0-1 record a season ago. But she's one of three seniors battling injuries, having just returned from a broken foot, and the Matadors haven't been nearly as dominant their first three games as they've been the last few years.

"We're playing with a lot of freshmen," Miramonte coach Mohamed Mohamed said. "If we can get our freshmen together and get healthy, we'll turn out."

Besides deBack, the Matadors also have a solid goalie returning in Shelby Church. But they did lose some key defenders and midfielders from a team that was incredibly difficult to score against last season.

Acalanes has never won an NCS title, but led the DFAL before the setback against Campolindo on Dec. 18.

The Dons have a longtime head coach in Tom Ginocchio and a veteran goalkeeper in senior Angela LaScala-Gruenewald. Junior Anja Simonsen has emerged as their top scoring weapon.

Though Acalanes' top rivals, Miramonte and Campolindo, have had the most success recently, this year could belong to anyone.

Campolindo 2, Miramonte 1: The Cougars have 12 seniors on their roster, and they got to celebrate a rare win over their biggest rival.

Sabine Wetzel and Nicole Patera scored for host Campolindo, which also got a strong defensive effort from Valerie Margerum in the victory. It was Campolindo's first win over the Matadors, the two-time defending North Coast Section 2A champions, since the semifinals of the 2007 NCS playoffs.

Wetzel scored the first goal of the game following a corner kick in the 22nd minute. Miramonte goalkeeper Shelby Church deflected the corner kick and another ensuing shot, but Wetzel was there to put the loose ball away. The Cougars (2-1 Diablo Foothill Athletic League) took a 2-0 lead when Patera scored on a shot from the right side just after halftime.

Mackenzie Martin netted the only goal for the Matadors (1-2 DFAL) when she got a foot on a ball the Campolindo defense was trying to clear in the 48th minute.

    12/17/2009

Miramonte faced their third straight road game against cross-town rival, Campolindo. The Cougars struck first on a put back goal off of a corner by Wetzel #8. The hard fought first half ended 1-0 Campo's favor. Campolindo tallied once again on a goal by Patera #7. Miramonte countered with a ricochet goal by Mackenzie Martin in the 48th minute of the contest. The Mats fought to the end, but were denied. Miramonte has a bye on Friday and a much needed rest as they prepare for the 2010 campaign against Dublin in January.

As the hours of daylight shorten and trees begin to lose their leaves, it can only be time for one thing: another dominant season for the Lady Mats soccer team.

Despite losing their season opener to Alhambra, the Lady Mats rebounded with a 4-2 win over Dougherty Valley that currently puts their record at 1-1.

The team looks to build off of the success of last season, when they achieved a phenomenal record of 9-0-1 enroute to capturing league and NCS titles. This year, however, the team features many new faces.

“We’re only returning five starters from last year, so a lot of underclassman and possibly some freshman are going to step up and help fill in at some starting roles this season,” said midfielder Marissa Crosetti ‘10.

Crosetti, along with forward Mekenna DeBack ’10 and defenders Katherine Cuyler ‘10 and Katharine Pearce ‘10 will lead the young team as they look to make another run at NCS.

“Although we’re not returning many [starters], we’ll still have veterans at every position,” said Crosetti.

These veterans will most likely prove invaluable as the season continues. Cuyler and Crosetti both earned 2nd team All DFAL honors last season, while goalie Shelby Church ‘10 garnered 1st team honors, and DeBack was awarded Co-MVP. Church and DeBack have committed to USC and Cal, respectively.

But what perhaps may be the team’s most valuable asset is their coach, Mohammad Mohammad. Mohammad, who has led the Lady Mats to numerous successful seasons, emphasizes a possession-oriented offense that his teams have flourished under.

“Last season we really benefited from that style of play,” said Crosetti. “Hopefully it can work well for us this season.”

The Lady Mats will need to benefit from Mohammad’s coaching as they face a competitive schedule. Last season, Campolindo, Acalanes, and Alhambra combined for a record of 35-15-7, and are all looking to dethrone the Lady Mats.

“Like us, everyone in league lost some players, but for the most part, teams will be very good,” said Crosetti. “I would say that the two toughest teams in league may be our rivals, Acalanes and Campo.”

The Lady Mats faced off against Campolindo on Dec. 16th, but results were not available as of press time.

Bucknell Women's Soccer to Welcome Seven Newcomers in 2009

Class of 2013 Features Student-Athletes from Six States

    Feb. 26, 2009

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell head women’s soccer coach Ben Landis has announced that seven student-athletes have committed to join the Bison next season. The members of the Class of 2013 who will play at Bucknell are Taryn Boucher of Cutchogue, N.Y., Corinne Collins of Orinda, Calif., Meghan Fitzpatrick of Verona, N.J., Sandita McDermott of Rhinebeck, N.Y., Emily Trosch of Reisterstown, Md., Jenna Tryon of Fairfax Station, Va., and Kayla Yee of Centennial, Colo.

The talented seven-player class joins a Bison team that graduated only three seniors off of last year’s 11-6-3 team, although the three departing seniors all played critical roles. Landis’ fourth Bucknell recruiting class features student-athletes from coast to coast, with every position on the field accounted for.

“Coming into this recruiting period we knew that replacing three outstanding seniors in Kelly Boswell, Jennifer Dervarics and Nicole Marotta was going to be an extremely difficult task considering the careers that they had,” said Landis. “However, there is some real talent throughout this class. We feel that we have strengthened the roster at every position, particularly at center back, goalkeeper and midfield, which were areas of emphasis. The best part about the class is that they are all quality student-athletes who have reputations as hard workers. That has been a trademark of our Bucknell teams and has been the foundation of our success. This is also an athletic group. They all have outstanding speed and quickness, which will make us an overall faster team.”

    ...

Collins is a fullback and midfielder who comes from a strong soccer program at Miramonte High School in Orinda, Calif. She captained the team as a senior and was named First Team All-Diablo Foothill Athletic League in 2008. The team captured its third straight DFAL title this past fall, and in 2008 it won the North Coast Section crown. Collins, whose father Tim played football at Bucknell from 1981-84, was also the team captain of the Lamorinda Soccer Club, United 90.

    Determined Mats seize opportunity

    By Stephanie Hammon
    Correspondent

    Posted: 03/12/2009 09:24:00 AM PDT

Pretty soon, the Miramonte High girls soccer team is going to run out of ways to out-do itself.

A year after the Matadors secured their school's first-ever North Coast Section 2A title in girls soccer, the team picked up title No. 2 while finishing the season with an undefeated record.

The only thing that kept Miramonte from a completely unblemished record was a 1-1 tie to Las Lomas in Diablo Foothill Athletic League play. And you know your team is doing something right when tying a solid program is cause for concern.

"I'm actually glad that tie took place because that set us back and make us more determined to work harder in the playoffs," said Miramonte coach Mohamed Mohamed.

In the end, the Matadors finished the year with a 14-0-1 record, but even more impressive was how they got to that mark. The team allowed just three goals the entire season, while scoring 56 of its own.

They also didn't allow a single goal in the postseason, outscoring their three opponents 8-0, including a 4-0 victory over Bishop O'Dowd in the championship game on Feb. 28.

Starring in that game for the Matadors was Mckenna deBack. The senior netted a hat trick, bringing her total number of goals on the season to 30 — more than half her team's total.

It was the first NCS title celebration for deBack, who was named the league Most Valuable Player after her sophomore season, but was out last year with an injury.

"We missed her last year," Mohamed said. "We missed her physical presence. She's mentally strong and strong at finishing — she has all the tools for a really good striker, no doubt about it."

DeBack is one of three players who plan on playing at Division I colleges next year. She has committed to UC Berkeley while Elaine Tanski will play at UC Davis and Corrine Collins at Bucknell.

While the Matadors completely dominated their league and NCS division, the one knock against them — and a big reason they earned just the No. 2 seed in NCS — was that they skipped out on forming a non-league schedule.

But according to Mohamed, the Matadors may not have gotten to where they ended up without that strategy. Last year they lost three of their top players to injuries, a result of competitive high school games coming at the tail-end of an exhausting club season.

To prevent those kind of injuries — and because this year's squad was already plenty experienced — the Matadors took things easy, not straying out of the 2A division.

Miramonte, Acalanes win NCS soccer finals

    By Shane
Sunday, March 1st, 2009 at 11:57 am in Lafayette, Orinda, Schools, Sports.

The Miramonte girls and Acalanes boys soccer teams had a lot in common heading into their NCS finals Saturday afternoon. Both were the number two seed, and both were playing against the number one seed and host Bishop O’Dowd.

The Miramonte girls started the day by controlling their final from kickoff to the final whistle, winning by a final score of 4-0. Junior forward McKenna DeBack, who has led her team all year, scored three of the four goals for the Matadors.

This win was the Miramonte girls second consecutive NCS soccer championship.

The Acalanes boys were overmatched in their final, creating few offensive opportunities, but they managed to hold Bishop O’Dowd scoreless through regulation and overtime, forcing the game into penalty kicks to separate the two teams locked at 0-0.

Both teams made their first three penalty kicks. In the fourth round, the Dons put their shot away, but Bishop O’Dowd’s shot was saved by Acalanes goalie, Logan Spittler. Acalanes converted their fifth penalty kick as well, putting the NCS championship in their hands.

This was the Dons first NCS soccer championship since 1998.

OAKLAND — McKenna DeBack was knocked down time and again in Saturday's North Coast Section 2A girls soccer championship game at Bishop O'Dowd High.

But the Miramonte junior forward continuously picked herself up and continued to mix it up with the physical Bishop O'Dowd defense.

Her perseverance paid off in a huge way.

DeBack had a hat trick and the Matadors defense turned in another shutout, as No. 2 Miramonte captured its second straight section title with a 4-0 victory over top-seed Bishop O'Dowd.

"I think it came with being mentally tough," DeBack said of her unwillingness to back down. "You can't let down. You have to just keep going."

The Matadors (14-0-1) polished off an undefeated regular season with a perfect run through the NCS playoffs, during which they outscored three opponents 8-0.

The only blemish on the Diablo Foothill Athletic League champions' record this season was a 1-1 tie to Las Lomas.

"It was an entire team effort," Miramonte coach Mohamed Mohamed said. "Everyone is the star of this team. All the seniors really stepped it up. This has been a special group for me."

Bishop O'Dowd (15-5-5) failed to earn its first section title since 2005. The Dragons last had reached the title game in 2007.

"Only one team can end the season with a win," Dragons coach Katie Pittman said. "It's hard, but the girls worked hard. The seniors worked really hard and we already miss them."

DeBack opened the scoring for Miramonte in the sixth minute. She fought through a defender and took a nice pass from senior Katherine Sander and buried a shot in the lower-left corner.

Senior Elaine Tanski gave Miramonte a 2-0 halftime lead, hooking a shot from the left corner into the net in the 12th minute.

DeBack made it 3-0 in the 68th minute. She secured a loose ball just inside the penalty box and fired a goal to the lower-left corner.

Her third goal came in the 72nd minute — a powerful left-footer to the upper-left corner.

The Dragons had six shots in the match, five coming from senior Gabbi Duhl.

The forward had a tremendous shot in the 51st minute on a free kick just outside the penalty box on the left sideline. But the ball hit the crossbar and Miramonte was able to clear it.

Matadors goalkeeper Shelby Church concluded an outstanding season with two saves. Emily Perales had four saves for the Dragons.

Corinne Collins scored the only goal just before halftime, even though her team controlled most of the play from start to finish.

Collins scored just past 38 minutes when she headed home a perfectly-struck corner kick from Marissa Crosetti.

Matadors coach Mohamed Mohamed and his players showed some chutzpah during the contest. When a Matadors player received a yellow card late in the first half, Mohamed played on with 10 players in an effort to get the carded player back on the field as soon as possible. Also, junior goalkeeper Shelby Church took free kicks for second-seeded Miramonte (13-0-1), one of which forced a save by Northgate goalkeeper Kate Hultin.

Though the Matadors created most of the chances, Northgate was not without its opportunities. Church was especially alert at this end too, as she regularly beat Northgate attackers to snatch or clear loose balls.

Hultin and her Northgate defenders also enjoyed a strong match. Hultin finished with seven saves, and Miramonte had many of its shots cleared from danger by the Broncos (18-3-4).

    Lady Mats Keep Dons Scoreless
    By Joey Epperson

Mats' deBack controls ball by Acalanes' Blee (left) and Whittom during Mats win, 4-0 Photo Bob Johnson

On January 28, the Acalanes Lady Dons (10-3-3) traveled to Miramonte to face last season's NCS champion Lady Matadors (8-0) in a battle of two cross-town DFAL soccer powerhouses. The Dons had not suffered a loss in ten attempts, their last loss dating all the way back to December 17, against Alhambra. But the Mats offense was intense. Though Dons' goalkeeper Angela Lescala-Gruenewald compiled 7 saves, the Mats' prevailed, 4-0.

The Matadors came out firing with an early goal by Katherine Sander, assisted by Marissa Corsetti. The following ten minutes saw three Matador breakaways fended off by the spectacular saves by Lescala-Gruenewald. With 19 minutes remaining in the half, the Mats continued their attack by way of a beautiful left-footed goal from Mekenna deBack to make the score 2-nil Miramonte.

It seemed as if the Dons were going to get on the board with just under ten minutes remaining in the half after a cross from Michelle Caine to Celina Velasco. However, with the Matador defense closing in on her, Velasco missed, just high off the crossbar.

The start of the second half saw beautiful ball handling by the Matadors, led by deBack and Sander. Off a pass from Sander, the speedy deBack turned the corner and took off down field, which left only one defender to beat. Cutting back to the middle, deBack put the ball past the keeper into the bottom left corner of the goal, giving her a second goal on the night and making the score 3-0 Mats.

Looking to split the Miramonte defense on a strong counter with 28 minutes left, Velasco went down with a low back injury and had to be taken out of the game. Down this key player, the Dons took another shot on goal in the 15th minute, but Manning's save kept the Dons scoreless.

It was all Miramonte after that, as Sander showed more fine dribbling and then scored to give the Matadors their 4th goal of the night.

Focusing on the team's chemistry, Mats captain, senior Elaine Tanski, explained how they've achieved a 31-1-2 two-season record: "We returned a team full of seniors so we have a lot of experience, and we have also been playing together for a long, long time, which gives us an edge when it comes down to the wire."

This time things certainly clicked right for the Matadors, who made 16 attempts on goal. If not for Lescala-Gruenewald's intense protection of the Dons' goal, game results would have been more lopsided.

Both teams continued DFAL play Friday. An Acalanes home game against Alhambra ended in a tie, 1-1. Meanwhile, the Mats trounced Dublin, 8-1.

Girls soccer notebook and rankings: Miramonte on unbeaten run in league play

    STAFF WRITER

    Fresh legs.

Miramonte High girls soccer coach Mohamed Mohamed believes in them, and it's hard to knock what they've produced in the Diablo Foothill Athletic League.

The Matadors are 9-0 in league play after sitting out the nonleague part of the season, including skipping the prestigious Tri-Valley Classic, a tournament in which many elite East Bay teams were knocking shins in back-to-back-to-back-to-back, high-level battles.

Unbeaten and top-ranked Foothill was one of those elite teams. The Falcons beat the likes of Carondelet, San Diego Section power Torrey Pines and Monte Vista en route to the Tri-Valley Classic Invitational Early crown, which helped catapult them to No. 1 in the ESPN Rise Fab 50 rankings.

Miramonte, meanwhile, the defending North Coast Section 2A champion, stayed on the sideline early in the season — out of sight but not without skill.

By the way, the Matadors and Foothill, the NCS 3A runnerup last season, have much in common. Both teams have savvy club players who have competed together since before they were 10 years old; both play an entertaining style of soccer that draws rave reviews from parents, coaches and referees alike; and both have marquee strikers — Foothill's top gun, senior Carlee Payne, is bound for BYU on a soccer scholarship, among 10 Falcons bound for Division I programs, and Miramonte junior Mekenna DeBack is averaging 2-3 goals a game and drawing heavy Pac-10 interest.

Mohamed's logic for sitting out the Classic makes some sense. Wary of pushing players too hard after a very demanding and lengthy club season, and risking injury, he built in a "window" of time for recovery. And guess what, the Matadors are like a breath of fresh air on the field, stylish, and seemingly building toward a big finish — just like last year.

Of course, you could say the same thing about three-time defending NCS 3A champion San Ramon Valley, which is making its trademark late-season run. The Wolves took a few lumps in the Tri-Valley Classic — at least three or four SRV players were injured in a bruising loss to Castro Valley — but don't appear too worse for wear today.

Mohamed reasons that with such an experienced varsity cast of juniors and seniors he doesn't need nonleague play to sort things out. It's a fine line that varsity coaches walk. They don't want to risk injury unnecessarily by overusing worn-out, nicked-up club players, or have their teams peak too soon and fade in the postseason. Others argue that a team can only improve by facing the best competition at every opportunity. For proof, check out Carondelet's demanding nonleague schedule.

Injuries are very much a part of girls soccer. DeBack, for one, after starring as a Miramonte freshman, sat her entire sophomore season with a foot injury from club play that required surgery. Miramonte senior Marissa Rollins, the Matadors' MVP last season, has not played this season due to a hamstring injury.

Miramonte, which draws its players from the LaMorinda soccer club, has advanced to at least the NCS 2A semifinals in each of the past four seasons, and Mohamed believes this team is even stronger than last year's section champs. Let the NCS opponent beware.

Here are the current East Bay Girls High School Soccer Rankings (as of Feb. 2):

    1, Foothill (15-0-0)

Matadors loaded for NCS title repeat
    By Stephanie Hammon

Last season, Miramonte High's girls soccer team made school history with the program's first-ever North Coast Section 2A title.

This year's Matadors— who return several key players from that banner team — are again aiming for nothing less than another NCS title.

    And so far, so good.

Though the Matadors didn't schedule any nonleague or tournament games this year, they dominated their first four league games, outscoring their Diablo Foothill Athletic League opponents 16-1 in four victories.

"We've always done well in league," Miramonte coach Mohamed Mohamed said. "Last year we only had one (DFAL) loss, this year we're hoping to go undefeated all the way."

While some of the Matadors' biggest strengths are experience and senior leadership, the team's top scorer so far is a junior who didn't even play on last year's team. McKenna DeBack, who made a strong impression two years ago as a freshman, has already netted 10 goals after sitting out with an injury all of last year.

She has helped make up for the absence of last year's MVP, Marissa Rowland, who is out with a hamstring injury, but could return by the end of the season.

DeBack compliments a solid backfield anchored by Corrine Collins and Caroline Scofield. Seniors Elaine Tanski, Kendall Pegan, Katherine Sander and Bonnie Ziegler make up a very talented midfield.

In a sport where the high school season comes at the tail end of a grueling club season, one of Miramonte's biggest challenges, as always, could be simply staying healthy. That is why the Matadors' schedule is so lean.

"We wanted to give the team a little bit of a break over the Christmas holiday," Mohamed said about the team's decision to not play in tournaments like the Tri-Valley Classic. "Most of the players are juniors and seniors, so it is a very experienced team.

"Most players come from club so their legs are tired. What we're trying to do this year is avoid injuries and give them a break so they are rested the rest of the season."

Mohamed admits that not seeing perennial NCS contending teams like Bishop O'Dowd, Piedmont and Northgate could hurt come playoff time. But with this group of talent, that probably won't matter.

"Our team plays possession build-up soccer," Mohamed said. "Everyone is important because of our style. Our style of play some coaches say is beyond high school. It's fun to watch."

The Miramonte and San Ramon Valley high school girls soccer teams took different paths to their respective North Coast Section titles.
The Matadors roared through a rugged Diablo Foothill Athletic League schedule, going 15-1-2. Miramonte beat out defending NCS champ Campolindo by six points and was 13 points ahead of third-place Northgate, the only team to hand the Matadors a defeat. Miramonte's defense did not yield a goal for its first 11 games.

"We had a team meeting after (losing to Northgate 2-1)," Matadors coach Mohamed Mohamed said. "Losing we felt let off steam. From that loss, I felt we were coming back stronger."

Miramonte finished the DFAL season 7-0-2, outscoring opponents 36-7 to enter NCS seeded No. 1 in the 2A bracket.

The Matadors blanked all three of their opponents to claim the title. They beat No. 3 Piedmont in the final 1-0.

All this from a team that lost three top returning players in Mekenna deBack, Summer Williams and Caroline Scofield due to injury when the season was still young.

"It's been a great season," Mohamed said. "We lost key players early in the season and the team character showed what we were made of."

Players like league MVP Marisa Rowland and defensive standouts such as goalkeeper Shelby Church, back Corinne Collins and midfielder Katherine Sander took up the slack, earning the school its first NCS girls title.

The San Ramon Valley girls had a much steeper climb to the top. An up-and-down season had them entering the playoffs 12-5-6 and seeded No. 6 in the 3A playoffs. "There was a time I wondered if we'd even get into North Coast," forward Jillian Armstrong said.

The fact the Wolves had won the previous two NCS titles only meant they'd graduated a ton of top players.

But not all their top players. Back in uniform were stars such as Armstrong, Katie Pedlowe, Jen Nordine, Hilary Harvey and Alyse Ledford -- veterans all. They were joined by underclassmen such as Grace Leer, Allie Tao, Kenzie Laird and Allie Begin.

The Wolves knocked off No. 11 Berkeley 2-0, No. 3 Carondelet 2-1, archrival No. 3 Monte Vista 2-1 and, finally No. 4 Foothill 2-1 in a shootout to claim a third straight 3A title.

Different roads for Miramonte and San Ramon Valley, but the same destination: NCS titles.

    Miramonte girls, Campo boys win

LAFAYETTE -- Saturday was quite the day for soccer teams in the Orinda/Moraga area as two teams claimed crowns.
As the final whistle sounded in the Miramonte High School girls soccer team's 1-0 victory over Piedmont in Saturday's North Coast Section 2A championship game, the Matadors' Katherine Cuyler, Corinne Collins and Julia Hurwitz gave each other a big hug.

The Matadors had won the first NCS girls soccer title in their program's history, and defenders Cuyler, Collins and Hurwitz, along with defender Marissa Crosetti and goalkeeper Shelby Church, were a big reason for the victory. The Miramonte defense produced its third straight shutout in the NCS playoffs, as an own-goal stood as the only score of the rainy game at Acalanes.

"Those five players have been solid for us all year," Miramonte coach Mohamed Mohamed said. "We played well. We were very offensive-minded. We were going after the second goal."

Collins pointed to the entire team's effort Saturday.

"It's not just the defense, it's the team. As long as we do the job, we'll win," she said.

The Matadors made a habit of pulling out close games in the NCS 2A playoffs this year. They also beat Bishop O'Dowd 1-0 in the semifinals and had a 2-0 win over El Cerrito in the quarterfinals.

Miramonte (21-1-3), the No. 1 seed, did have its chances offensively. It had a 17-9 shots-on-goal advantage in the game, and an 11-3 advantage through the first 61:58 of the game. Piedmont (21-2-1), the No. 3 seed,
had a late charge, but could not tie the game after the own goal off the leg of Sydney Choi at 24:45.
"They battled," said Piedmont coach Samantha Swerdloff about her squad. "I think we had a little bit of a nervous slow start, but they have a good team. They scored, and we didn't."

Fine play by both goalkeepers helped keep the game close. Both Church and Piedmont goalkeeper Katlin Kelleher had five saves in the game.

The Matador girls weren't the only local team to win a 2A championship as the Campolindo Cougars boys did the same thing.

This game had intensity, skill and lots of possession, play-to-feet style by both teams. The game also was a lesson in the value of set pieces as Campolindo took a three-goal lead at halftime and never looked back.

"Everything worked well because we worked and trained day in and day out," Cougars coach Victor Litvinenko said. "Everything worked well tonight."

For No. 4 seed Campolindo (17-5-4), the halftime score might have had an aura of deja vu. Litvinenko, mindful of an earlier game in which a 3-0 lead melted into a 3-3 tie with Alhambra, reminded his players at halftime to maintain a high intensity level. And on this night, there were no slip-ups.

No. 2 seed Piedmont (21-3-2) actually took the game to Campolindo in the early minutes, but the Cougars had the perfect response. About 18 minutes had elapsed when Alika Okamitsu blasted a free kick into the box from beyond midfield. The ball took a funny bounce in front of the goal, and Max Smith-Gee got maybe a hair on it for the first score of the night.

Campolindo struck again just four minutes later when Ben Rudolph scored off Smith-Gee's free kick, and just like that, the rout was on.

Overall, the teams were more evenly-matched than the final score might indicate. Every Piedmont mistake, however, proved costly to the Highlanders, who found themselves down by three goals when Parker Wells scored off a ball flicked on by Thibault Deichler at 29:10.

"We had to take advantage of their mistakes," Litvinenko said, "and we took advantage of all of them."

Campolindo kept taking advantage in the second half, as Georgio Tavecchio and Jason Kimura scored on booming, long-range shots. Another free kick, taken by Rudolph and finished by Andrew Choi, ended Campolindo's scoring.

Piedmont took advantage of a set piece for its only goal when William Young served a free kick to Nikolai Littleton to avert the shutout.

(02-24) 00:42 PST -- From the final whistle to the first steps of the long, wet walk to the car, not even the rain could stop Miramonte-Orinda midfielder Katherine Sander from smiling.

The top-seeded Matadors captured their first North Coast Section 2A girls soccer championship Saturday with a 1-0 win over third-seeded Piedmont at Acalanes High.

"This was what we were preparing our entire season for," Sander said. "Every game and every hour of practice, it was all toward doing this."

Miramonte (21-1-3) took eight shots before getting its first goal, which didn't come on an on-goal attempt.

In the 28th minute, Jessica Menjivar, one of only two seniors on the team, saw her cross ricochet off of Piedmont defender Sydney Choi and find its way to the back of the net.

The Matadors never let up. They earned seven corners to the Highlanders' one and outshot Piedmont 17-6.

"We always believe that our best defense is a good offense. That's always been our philosophy," Miramonte coach Mohamed Mohamed said. "We wanted to keep attacking. It let us stay in control of the game."

Piedmont (21-1-2) had its best chance to score come in the 67th minute when freshman midfielder Katherine Lim pushed her shot just to the left of the post.

It was one of the rare times Piedmont managed to get a good look on target, and when they did, sophomore goalkeeper Shelby Church was there to turn the attempt away. Church had two saves in the final for her 13th shutout.

No. 3 Piedmont (21-1-1) vs. No. 1 Miramonte (20-1-3) at Acalanes HS, 5 p.m. -- Both teams dominated their leagues, but the Matadors played a tougher schedule overall -- simply by competing in the DFAL. No less than seven DFAL teams qualified for the playoffs. The Bay Shore Athletic League sent three teams to NCS.

To reach the final, Miramonte shut out No. 8 El Cerrito 2-0 and No. 5 Bishop O'Dowd 1-0. Piedmont blanked No. 6 Berean Christian 3-0 and topped resurgent Acalanes 4-1.

Last year, Miramonte, then seeded No. 1, and Piedmont, seeded No. 3 just like this year, lost in the semifinals. In 2006, No. 5 Miramonte defeated No. 4 Piedmont 2-0 in the quarterfinals.

O'Dowd girls suffer 1-0 loss to Matdors

    ORINDA — Fast-paced. Intense. Emotional.
This North Coast Section 2-A girls soccer semifinal at Miramonte High was all of that. Oh — and the fans saw some pretty good soccer, too, as Kendall Pegan scored off a rebound of her own shot at 13:56 to give the host Matadors the only goal they needed in a 1-0 win over Bishop O'Dowd.

"It was high-paced soccer; we saw a lot of the physical and emotional part of the game," Matadors coach Mohammad Mohammad said. "Both teams emptied their tanks on the field."

For the most part, both the No. 1 Matadors (20-1-3) and the No. 5 Dragons (19-8) struggled to possess and control the ball, which tended to pick up speed on Miramonte's FieldTurf surface.

O'Dowd found itself especially challenged in getting the ball beyond its midfielders. And Miramonte, for its part, played a lot of balls short in its own half before sending them long into O'Dowd's half in the hope that one of the forwards could outrace a Dragons defender.

The latter scenario didn't happen much, as the Dragons defenders Molly Hendriksen, Alexi Pappas, Christina Humphrey and Saki Crabb stayed alert. And when the ball did get by, junior goalkeeper Emily Perales was more than equal to the task, coming up with four very heads-up and challenging saves. Perales also prevented shots on other occasions by beating Miramonte attackers to balls played into the box.

"My back line really played well tonight," Dragons coach Katie Pittman said, "especially Alexi — she really did a good job in marking (Miramonte forward) Marisa Rowland. And Emily Perales did a great job in goal."
Offensively, O'Dowd was not without its chances. Dina Wahbe shot a ball high between the football uprights at 12:40, and 10 minutes later, Marcelle Justison sent a shot wide right after a nice set-up from Gabbi Duhl.

The missed opportunities came back to bite the Dragons, as Miramonte held O'Dowd to just one shot in the second half.

"Neither team was able to possess in the midfield," Pittman said. "That's the product of an intense NCS game."

Miramonte girls soccer team bested in DFAL match

After thoroughly dominating nearly every opponent they have played, the Miramonte girls soccer team finally succumbed. The Matadors were upended by Northgate 2-1 in a Diablo Foothill Athletic League match, falling to 8-1 in league and to 12-1-1 overall as of Wednesday's match against Alhambra. In their previous match, Miramonte beat second-place Campolindo 7-2, and it was the first time the Matadors had given up a goal all year. After the loss to Northgate, the Mats have gone from no goals allowed in 12 matches to four goals allowed in the last two.

After the match, Miramonte High School girls soccer coach Mohamed Mohamed talked about junior forward Marisa Rowland's dedication to the game and to her team.
"She's a team player. She leads by example," he said.

For her part, Rowland said she was simply enjoying being back in uniform after sitting out with a cold. Her voice was hoarse as she left the field.

As for the opposition Wednesday, well, she left Campolindo stunned and no doubt muttering to itself.

Rowland scored six goals to lead the visiting Matadors (11-0-1, 8-0-0 DFAL) past the Cougars 7-2 in Diablo Foothill Athletic League play.

"I was just happy to be playing again because of my cold," said Rowland, who scored her team's first five goals. "I was just excited to be playing."

Rowland and the Matadors found their groove midway through the first half. Taking a pass from Bonnie Zeiger, Rowland struck close in for a 1-0 lead at the 17-minute mark.

Rowland and Zeiger teamed up for the next two Matadors' goals, as well, giving Rowland a hat trick and Miramonte a 3-0 lead at the half.

Just 41/2 minutes into the second half, Katherine Cuyler pushed the ball toward the net, and Rowland tapped it past Cougars goalkeeper Emily McPhee for a 4-0 advantage. Thirteen minutes later, Rowland and Zeiger joined for another goal and a 5-0 lead.

Rowland's streak was broken by a teammate: MacKenzie Martin, who scored off a pass from Elaine Tanski with 3:22 to go. Rowland's second hat trick arrived via a penalty kick in the closing minute.
"We've been practicing our shooting," Rowland said. "We were prepared for this game."

If there was an upside to the game for the Cougars (8-2-3, 6-2-0), it was that they became the first team to score on the Matadors this season.

With 121/2 minutes to go, the Cougars' Kaelyn Caspillo scored to make it 5-1. Five minutes after Caspillo struck, Moira Heath sent a rocket from the right side of the cage into the upper reaches of the net to cut the deficit to 5-2.

"It definitely felt good," Heath said. "It felt good to put those two in the net, good we scored."

Cougars, Mats battling for soccer championships

Cougars, Mats battling for soccer championships

If the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees played in September with both teams under .500, or Ohio State and Michigan played for fifth place in the Big Ten, you can bet the game would still matter just as much to the players and most of the fans.
The same goes for the players and students when Miramonte and Campolindo high schools get together. It's safe to say it's kind of a rivalry, regardless of what sport is being played.

"It's not kind of a rivalry," Miramonte boys soccer coach Jaimy McLaughlin said. "It's the rivalry. On Campo day, when we play Campo, the students come to school wearing beat Campo shirts, no matter what sport."

Now it just so happens that the Red Sox and Yankees are usually battling for the American League East crown, and the Buckeyes and Wolverines are usually playing for the Big Ten title. This kind of thing usually makes the rivalry better.

You can multiply that by two right now in Orinda and Moraga because the Miramonte and Campolindo boys and girls soccer teams are currently standing first and second in the Diablo Foothill League, intensifying the rivalry.

"The rivalry has always been there, not just for soccer, but for all sports," Campolindo boys soccer coach Victor Litvinenko said. "We don't really like Miramonte and they really don't like us."

Both Miramonte teams are leading the DFAL as the girls are 7-0-0, leading the league with 21 points, with Campolindo just behind at 6-1-0 and 18 points.

The Miramonte boys, who just got credit for a forfeit win against Las Lomas, now lead the league with 19 points as the Mats are 6-0-1. Campolindo is just four points behind with 15 points and a 5-1-0 record.
The Cougars have plenty of time to make up ground because the teams have not yet renewed hostilities this season.

They play for the first time on January 9 when the Miramonte boys and Campolindo girls play host. They meet again on February 8 in matches that could determine a league champ when the Cougar boys and Miramonte girls host.

"It's always been a good healthy rivalry," Campo girls coach Ernesto Silva said.. "A lot of these kids play together in club, and it's a healthy rivalry."

And as long as both teams continue winning, it won't have any problem being a healthy rivalry.

Silva's Campolindo team is young, starting seven sophomores, but he says that having a bunch of unselfish girls is what has led to this season's success.

"I think it's because we have a bunch of kids that are eager to come together to form a champion," Silva said. "They go all out, and there's no stopping them. It's really neat to see."

Speedy scorers Erin Bricker and Caroline Helfrich lead the Campolindo attack and sophomore Kaelyn Castillo is usually busy setting up the assists for a team that has won three of the last four North Coast Section 2A championships, including back-to-back titles last year and the year before.

So how can a team, especially one that is young like this year's squad, continue to play at such a high level?

"The focus comes from being a part of a team that has been very successful," Silva said. "They want to continue that, and it drives them every time they come out."

The Miramonte girls are out to dethrone Campolindo and are off to a very good start. If the Mats continue playing this well, they could end up with a No. 1 or 2 seed in the NCS playoffs as they look to snatch the championship from their rivals.

"We're looking this year to make it all the way through the NCS playoffs," head coach Mohamed Mohamed said.

The Matadors and their coach also preach team first, which is a good reason they are 10-0-1 after winning the Tri-Valley Classic.

"Our team plays better than any other high school as a team," Mohamed said. "I have so much respect for that."

They have not given up a goal this year as goalie Shelby Church has 11 shutouts to her credit. Their defenders -- Katherine Cuyler, Julia Hurwitz, Alex Seclow as well as midfielders Marissa Crosetti, Bonnie Zieger, Katherine Sander and Kendall Pegan -- are all playing a key role in this effort.

Marisa Rowland, Elaine Tanski and Corrine Collins lead the attack up front.

Rowland, the team leader in scoring, has 14 goals and four assists on the season, but her coach says value goes well beyond stats.

"She's probably been the most dominant player in the league for the last two years," Mohamed said. "She's probably the most dedicated too. She's passionate about the game, and she just goes about her business."

The Miramonte boys, on the other hand, are looking to get back to the top of the mountain, after a year away from the pinnacle.

The Matador boys are used to winning section titles, winning one in 2006 on the heels of winning three out of four between 2001-2004.

"They've had a very good tradition here," McLaughlin said. "Every team that comes through, they don't want to be the team that doesn't make NCS."

Miramonte is led by four players, two seniors and two juniors.

Senior Phil Da Silva and junior Bobby Regaldo are the team's leading scorers. Defensive leaders Tommy Sander (senior) and midfielder Weston Bergh (junior) have played key roles in giving the team a 10-0-1 record.

But it's not about one, or just a few players; it's more about a big cohesive unit, and that is why Miramonte has been so successful.

"It's teamwork, 100 percent teamwork," McLaughlin said. "Everything we do is as a team, that's the big difference."

Cohesiveness is a word that would also describe the Campolindo boys team.

"We all gelled very quickly, and we gelled really well," Litvinenko said. "We lost three talented kids from last year, but this year we're actually doing better."

The Cougars are led by offensive captain Max Smith-Gee, defensive captain Ryan Kumura and goalie Noel Raine. Raine has posted shutouts in seven of the team's 10 games this year.

Georgio Tavecchio, who has been a star kicker for the football team, has provided a huge lift lately, scoring 10 goals in the team's last eight games.

"We need to play consistent," Litvinenko said. "Last year we were up and down. This year we need to be more consistent and finish our opportunities when we have them."

The Miramonte High School girls soccer team kept two streaks going at the Tri-Valley Classic Tournament.

By beating visiting California 1-0 in the Gold Late Division final on Saturday, the Matadors (10-0-1) extended their undefeated streak to 11 games.

More impressively, the Matadors kept their scoreless streak going: In 11 games, Miramonte is yet to be scored upon.

"We're going to give up a goal eventually," Matadors defensive player Corrine Collins said. "But for now, we'll keep it going."

The scoreless streak was needed to beat the Grizzlies (9-4-2). California had defeated three opponents by a combined 7-0 and led Miramonte 26-24 in total points heading to the title game. The Matadors came in with two wins, but also a scoreless tie against Amador Valley.

Given its track record, Miramonte needed to score at least one goal. After a scoreless first half, the Matadors got the goal it needed. Miramonte's Elaine Tanski crossed to Marisa Rowland, who slammed the ball into the upper left-hand corner of the net nine minutes into the second half.

After that, the Matadors settled into its defense, especially when the Grizzlies brought everyone forward in the closing minutes.

"We try to cover for each other," Collins said.

Grizzlies coach Lee Munson said he thought his team played well, but were a tad tired going into the noon start at Miramonte.

"We didn't have the energy. We played at 7:30 last night," Munson said. "And we had just 13 healthy players. So the energy level was down.
    "But their goal was nice."

California outshot Miramonte 7-4. Matadors goalkeeper Shelby Church recorded five saves, Grizzlies goalie Shelby Tomasello had three.

Miramonte's last Tri-Valley championship was in 2005 when it defeated Berean Christian 3-1 for the Maroon Division title.
