NEW Dates for 2007 OSBA Tournament
    February 27, 2007  --   ATTENTION COACHES!

The ONTARIO SENIOR BASEBALL ASSOCIATIONproud to announce the dates for it's fourth annual tournament.

We have moved the tournament to the July 1st long weekend of June 29th to July 2nd (The 2nd being a Monday, is to be used as a rain date) We have moved the date of our tournament to ease some of the issues we had with the 2006 tournament and also to help accommodate various leagues' season schedules.

The tournament will again be held in Barrie Ontario, using the beautiful
Barrie Metals Stadium as a the focal point for the tournament. As we do
every year we will be looking for teams who are willing to play their first game on the Friday night.

MORE INFO IS TO FOLLOW IN THE COMING WEEKS, SUCH AS TOURNAMENT FORMAT WITH REGARDS TO PLAYOFF ROUNDS AND ALSO COST OF TOURNAMENT.

ALL TOURNAMENT QUESTIONS should be forwarded to Tournament Convenor Rod Holinaty at r.holinaty@sympatico.ca or baseballcoach66@hotmail.com

If you have questions with regards to OSBA itself then please feel free to

Info for both the 2007 OSBA Tournament and OSBA itself can be found at their league website www.leaguelineup.com/ossba

    Canada Day Long Weekend!

    Rod Holinaty
    OSBA Tournament Convenor

Change to "C" and "D" divisions
June 27, 2007  --   There has been a flip of teams between the "C" division and "D" division.

Due to the very real possibility of the Oshawa UpDogs not having enough players for their Friday night game in Barrie and having to forfeit, the Mississuaga North Tigers generously agreed to take over the Friday night game and move to the "C" Division, allowing the UpDogs to move to the "D" Division and 3 games on Saturday.

The Schedule and divisions have been updated on the site and we are waiting one more slight change to a game time on Friday night.

Once this change happens or doesn't we will be posting a division by division preview.

Hope you are all looking forward to a great weekend of baseball!

Time change for Friday night game
June 27, 2007  --   There has been a small change in the start time for the Friday night game between the Mississuaga North Bengals and the Mississuaga North Tigers. the game is to be played at Huronia Park and will now commence at 8:30pm.

    Tournament Preview
    June 28, 2007  --   Division “A”

Durham Chiefs – Durham, along with Burlington, has been one of the most dominant teams in this tournament the past 2 years, meeting in the finals both times. Durham took the title in ’05 and lost in last years final. The team almost didn’t make it there and had to pull off an incredible come from behind performance in the last inning of their semi-final game vs. Quebec. Durham sports an 8-1-1 tournament record and currently has one of OSBA’s best offenses, with a great pitching staff to match.

Oshawa Talons – Oshawa sports a 4-6 tournament record. They made the playoffs in ’05 losing to eventual champion Durham. They are having a good regular season, with their pitching and defense leading the way.

Bloor Jays – 2006 was the teams first year in tournament and they came out firing. They put up a 2-1 record losing only to the Durham Chiefs. This year, a similar record should get them into playoffs. This team is all about offense, so it will be interesting to see how their pitching will hold up if they happen to go 6 games.

GHBL Stars – A last minute team put together from a mixture of different ball clubs that play out of the GHBL including the Bandits (6-3-1) and Bears (6-3) It is difficult to determine what kind of club this will be. If they have enough pitching, they might be competitive.

    Division “B”

Richmond Hill Phoenix – Won the tournament in 2004, and then, despite playing really good baseball in 2005(2-1) and 2006 (2-0-1) they have not made it back to the playoff rounds. Their tournament record is a lofty 7-1-1. Always dangerous, this team has pitching and offense and looks to step it up this year get back to the playoffs.

Brooklin/Whitby Stars – Though always a good OSBA team and last years champions, Brooklin has never matched it’s regular season success in this tournament, so this year, they will join with the Whitby Chiefs and Scarborough Indians to try to improve on their 6-3-1 mark. The team made the playoffs in 2005, but lost in semi finals to Bulls. Difficult to say what the mixture of guys will be, and how well they can come together, but the best of Brooklin, Scarborough and Whitby has to be considered dangerous

Barrie Red Sox – Barrie is riding some momentum coming off their first 2 wins of ’07. They always play pretty good in tournament and have a 6-5 record overall. In 2004 they lost in tournament finals to Richmond Hill Phoenix. 1-2 in 2005 and 2-1 in 2006. As tournament hosts, Barrie always seems to be able to draw out some of the best players in city to augment their team.

West Toronto Royals – Competed in 2006 and managed a 1-2 record. They were known as the Brampton Royals then. They play out of the Brampton league and have a 7-2 record in the ‘C’ Division.

    Division “C”

Mississauga North Bengals – 2006 was the teams first year in tournament and they got a bad draw in winding up in Burlington’s division. Team went 2-1, but the loss to Burlington was enough to not have them make playoffs. They’ve had an up and down year in OSBA play, getting off to a 3-1 start, but then playing sub .500 ball since then. The team has lots of pitching and a hit or miss offense, that could make them a dangerous team depending how the games unfold.

Mississauga Majors – The Majors are new to the league in and the tournament. They are a young team that lost some close games early on in season, but have since won 5 in a row. They have deep pitching and strong bats as well as a history of success at the Junior Select Tournament level.

Mississauga North Tigers – The Tigers have only been to the tournament once and had a very good 2-1 showing in 2005, losing out division to Brooklin. The Tigers have had a rough start to the ’07 season and though they have never had strong arms, they are hoping to get their bats on track to carry them through a couple games.

Mississauga Jays – Another new team to the tournament, the Jays play our of the Metro League where they are 5-8.

    Divisions “D”

Burlington Bulls – Sporting a 9-1 tournament record and one finalist berth and one championship, the Burlington Bulls are looking to become the first team to win 2 championships. With very deep pitching, stellar defense and an offense capable of putting up runs in a hurry, the Bulls have to be considered the favorites in their division.

Hamilton Pirates – Have been coming to the OSBA tournament since 2004 and have not had a great deal of success here. 3-5-1 in tournament history and have never made it past round robin. The team is dominating in the ICBL at 10-0 where they are about to become back to back champions. It will be interesting to see how playing lesser competition than in years past has prepared them for the Tournament. The Pirates have enough good arms and very solid bats to do well and make some noise.

Brampton Cardinals – Making their first appearance at the tournament, the Brampton Cardinals play out of the “B” Division in the Brampton league where they have a 6-2-1 record, but the most runs in the league.

Oshawa UpDogs – Not much is known about this team. Allegedly they have some very good players, but were unable to find a league this year, therefore they wound up playing softball. We’ll see how quickly they can adjust to overhand pitching and no safety bags.

2007 OSBA Tournament a huge success
July 4, 2007  --   This past weekend the Ontario Senior Baseball Association ran it's annual tournament in Barrie. The tournament was moved from the August Civic Long Weekend to the July 1st long weekend for this year.

OSBA had 16 teams take part with 10 of those coming from OSBA itself. The weather in Barrie was beautiful all weekend long and some great baseball was played throughout the weekend.

Sunday saw some great baseball played in the tournament playoffs. This year being the first with Quarter-finals, which allowed for 8 of the 16 teams to continue on to Sunday.

The tournament final saw the defending 2006 OSBA Tournament Champions Burlington Bulls return to the final for their record 3rd straight year with a perfect 5-0 record. Their opponents were the Brooklin/Whitby Stars, a team comprised of players from both OSBA teams with a couple added from Scarborough as well. The Brooklin/Whitby Stars came into the final also with a perfect 5-0 record.

The stage was set for a great game and neither team disappointed. Each scoring a run in the first and then the two pitchers (Cam McKnight Burlington Bulls & Chris Theodoru Brooklin/Whitby Stars) dueled the rest of the way into the 7th inning. The Stars were able to put 2 runs across in the top half of the inning to take a 3-1 lead. The Bulls however would not go away quietly, notching 1 run of their own to make the score 302 and threatened with the bases loaded and two outs before a fly ball ended the game, giving the Brooklin/Whitby Stars the 2007 OSBA Tournament Championship.

OSBA and I Rod Holinaty, would like to thank everybody who helped out this year to make it one of the smoothest and fun tournaments that OSBA has held.

Gerry Ray, Sue Charters, Gary Charters and Jim Taylor for their work in securing the diamonds and umps and helping out convening when needed. Sue for doing the announcing in the Championship game. Jim for helping out at the HR Derby.

All the OSBA coaches who helped convene the games they took part in and especially Mike Masters who convened extra games where their was no OSBA coach taking part. Also a big thanks to Mike for keeping the tournament website up to date with scores as they happened. Also for securing the 16th and final team in the tournament.

A big thank you to all the umpires who took part this year, they had to be one of the best group of umps we have ever had. Not only for their work on the field but also the little things they did off the field to help the tournament run smooth.

Finally a special thanks to OSBA President Steve Smith who helped keep everything on track leading up to the tournament and who not only helped out all weekend doing various jobs including running the HR Derby and also securing the prizes for the Derby and also the MVP awards in the tournament final.

Now the planning starts for the 2008 tournament to make it bigger and better!

    Sincerely,

    Rod Holinaty
    OSBA Tournament Convenor

    ATTENTION COACHES!

The ONTARIO SENIOR BASEBALL ASSOCIATION is proud to announce the dates for it's fifth annual tournament. We apologize for the delay.

The date of the tournament will be the July 1st long weekend of June 27th to June 30th (The 30th being a Monday, is to be used as a rain date)

We are announcing the date of the tournament later then in past years, due to the fact that have had to move the location of the tournament from the Barrie area down to the Durham Region, specifically in Clarington and Oshawa. We only recently got confirmation of the parks.

The one other big change besides location, is that this year the OSBA tournament will be a "WOOD BAT ONLY" tournament. If needed we can help teams with deals on wood bats from dealers in our area.

As we do every year we will be looking for teams who are willing to play their first game on the Friday night.

The tournament format will be the same as in years past with each team guaranteed 3 games in a round robin format.

We will be accepting 16 teams and 8 of those teams will move on to the playoff rounds.

Cost of the tournament will be $450.00. All cheques are to be made out to "OSSBA"

You can find a registration form and roster form in the menu on the left.

ALL TOURNAMENT QUESTIONS should be forwarded to Tournament Convenor Rod Holinaty at r.holinaty@sympatico.ca or baseballcoach66@hotmail.com

We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible in the Durham Region on the Canada Day Long Weekend!

    2008 Schedule finally Released
OSBA is happy to announce that the schedule for the 2008 OSBA Tournamnet has been posted and was sent to all coaches on Tuesday night.

The long delay in getting the schedule out had several reasons but the biggest was when the defending tournament champions, Brooklin/Whitby Stars, had their team decimated by late departures this past weekend. The two coaches however have put together a team of players to make sure that the tournament went ahead with 12 teams. This team will be comprimised of players from across the Durham Region and also a few from Scarborough and Mississauga. They will be named the Durham Stars.

This leaves only three returning Champs in this years tournament, the Burlington Bulls, Ontario Diamond Jacks (formerly Richmond Hill Phoenix) and the Durham Chiefs. For a better idea of the teams entered in the 2008 OSBA Tournament, please check out the tournament preview below.

Special thanks to Mike Masters of the Bulls for doing up the preview again this year.

    Saturday Results are posted
After a lengthy Rain Delay that saw the 8:30am games get postponed till Sunday morning at 8:00pm, the ret of the games were played on what turned out to be a beautiful sunny day.

After the last 3 Round Robin games are played on Sunday, the Playoffs will commence.

    Quarter-Finals - tentatively schedule for 10:30am

    Semi-Finals - tentatively scheduled for 1:00pm

Final - tentatively scheduled for 4:00pm

    Tournament a success despite rain.
July 3, 2008  --   The 2008 OSBA Tournament started off great with two games on the Friday night. One of the contest was a blow out between the Burlington Bulls and Brampton diamondbacks, with the Bulls coming out on top 10-0. The other game of the night, saw the Oshawa Talons and Ottawa Diamondbacks battle right to the last out, with the diamondbacks winning 2-1.

Saturday morning dawned and with it came a heavy rain that would like like it was goign to go away but would then return. Tournament organizers decided to postpone all three 8:30am games to Sunday. They then waited to see what would happen with the 10:45am games. Luck was with tournament convenor Rod Holinaty as the clouds broke and two of the three diamonds were able to be put into game use. So 2 of the 10:45 games were started basically on time and the third was moved to an open time slot at Ritson Field. Thanks goes to the Barrie Brewers for having no problem moving the game, even though it meant they would be playing back to back games at 1:00pm and 3:30pm. Also thank to the Ontario Diamond Jacks who because of the move, would have to rush back from Ritson to play their second game at Clarington Fields.

All games after the rain delay were changed to a curfew of 1 hour and 45 minutes. This was done to get games back on track time wise and also in case more showers came as forcast, the chance of getting games in woudl be greater.

The rest of Saturday went off without anymore hitches and some very competitive baseball was played. The use of wood bats seemed to be generally well liked and the amount of broken bats was very low, especially for the amount of games being played over the course fo the weekend.

At the end of Saturday Division "A" had completed all it's games and saw the Burlington Bulls moving on as the division winner, with the possibility of getting a bye and the Oshawa Talons moving on as the second place team. The Ottawa Diamondbacks did not advance even though they had a matching record of 2-1, however their +/- rating was lower then the other two teams.

The Sunday morning Round Robin games would be needed to decide the rest of the teams in the playoffs.

Division "B" had one game to be played, with the Durham Chiefs playing the Mississauga Jays. The Chiefs won the game giving them 1st in the division as well as the 1st Seed and a bye to the Semi's. Richmond Hill took second place in the division.

Division "C" saw all 4 teams going into the final two games with 1-1 records. So the two winning teams would the ones moving on to the Quarter-finals. The Mississauga North Bengals were triumphant over the Hamilton Pirates and the Durham Stars defeated the Forest Glen Giants.

The Quarter-Finals saw the Oshawa Talons taking on the Ontario Diamond Jacks, with the Diamond Jacks winning in a walk 10-0 and moving on to the Semi's. The Mississauga North Bengals would then face the Durham Stars for the second time, having won their first match-up in the round robin. The Stars would take the re-match in a tight game, 3-1.

The Semi-Finals would then see the Durham Chiefs taking on the Durham Stars. Another tight well pitched game would see the Stars win 3-0. In the second Semi-Final, the Burlington Bulls would take on the Ontario Diamond Jacks. In a seesaw battle the Bulls would come away with the one run victory over the Diamond Jacks, 7-6.

The Final was set and the Bulls were in it again as they had been now since 2005. Their opponent the Stars were looking forward to a good game but were no match for the very strong and deep Bulls squad they faced. The Bulls made quick work of the Stars jumping out to an early lead and never looking back. Final score was 12-2, giving the Bulls their second OSBA Tournament Championship and the only two time Champion.

On behalf of OSBA and myself I would li9ke to thank a few people who's help was very much appreciated this past weekend. Steve Smith for his help in all the admin work leading up to the tournament making sure it would be a go and for his help through out the tourney in giving feedback and such when it mattered. Jim Taylor for organizing the umpires for the weekend, never an easy job and also for his help during the weekend in making sure games that were postponed or moved were covered. Chris Killoran and Anthony Cole for their help in making sure that Ritson Field was up and running all weekend, even with the rain we got Saturday morning. Gary Charters and Brian Booth for having no complaints about moving their teams around to make sure that all games got played in a timely fashion. All the coaches, not already named, who took part in the tournament and had great patience during the bad weather, they were, Mike Masters, Ryan McNeil, Joe Diirio, Vince Novielli, Allan Micolino and Ryan Rattos. Our whole umpire crew that took part over the weekend, they not only did a great job on the field but were very very accomadating when we needed to move games around and when games had to be pushed back. We ended up with only one game where we had only one umpire, which was in a game that my own team the Stars was taking part in and the ump did one of the better jobs I have seen in a long time. The umps were, Chris Williamson, Brian Bradley, Roger Newman, Dave Hamilton, Jim Stacey, Brad Gibson, Jim Taylor, Peter Stycuk, Ryan Mason, Darryl Beckett, Paul Tait, Dave Jarrett, Garth Miller, Keith McGregor and Andy Herrington.

My last thanks goes out to the Clarington Fields grounds crew, who without their help the tournament would not have been the success it was.
So a special thanks to Ken Sherwood and his assistants for a great job on the weekend.

It is my sincere hope that everybody had a good time at the tournament and though it was not a perfect tournament, I do think it was a success. We look forward to hosting the tournament again at Clarington Fields in 2009.

I'll finish off by giving mine and OSBA's congratulations to the 2008 OSBA Tournament Champion Burlington Bulls. A very strong and deep team as mentioned before and a very well coached team with the staff of Mike Masters, Steve Atkinson and James Crawford. Congrats guys and look forward to seeing you again in 2009!

    2009 Tournament 1 week away
June 21, 2009  --   The 2009 OSBA Tournament is only 1 week away.

This years version is smaller then in years past due to difficulties with getting enough diamonds booked and also making sure the tournament stayed on budget.

The tournament again returns to Clarington and Oshawa for 2009 with Clarington Fields and Ritson Park being used. 8 teams will be taking part including last years Champs the Burlignton Bulls and the 2008 finalists the Brooklin/Whitby Stars.

A full tournament preview will be posted shortly. You can check out the site now for the full schedule as well as to see who is taking part.

12 teams confirmed for 2008 OSBA Tournament
The Ontario Senior Baseball Association is happy to announce that we have 12 teams confirmed for the 2008 OSBA Tournament being held from June 27th to 29th in Clarington and Oshawa, Ontario.

Our goal was for a 16 team tournament and we will still attempt to achieve that but our certain that with 12 team confirmed the 2008 tournament will be just as successful as the OSBA tournaments have been in the past.

This years version of the OSBA tournament has a quite large difference from past tournaments, beyond the obvious location switch from Barrie, Ontario. The 2008 tournament will feature the exclusive use of wood bats for the first time.

Teams that have been confirmed (in alphabetical order):

    Barrie Brewers
    Brampton Diamondbacks
    Brooklin/Whitby Stars (2007 Champs)
    Burlington Bulls (2006 Champs)
    Durham Chiefs (2005 Champs)

    Hamilton Pirates
    Mississauga Jays
    Mississauga North Bengals
Ontario Diamond Jacks (2004 Champs, as Richmond Hill Phoenix)
    Oshawa Talons
    Ottawa Diamondbacks

With the past 4 years champions all returning, we expect to have a great weekend of baseball.
