It took 5 games to do it, but Long's Market won the Chicora League Championship Series, 3 games to 2. It is the first time that Long's Market, managed by Dave Berry, has won the championship in their 16 years of existence. Armstrong has played in the Chicora League championship 12 of the past 13 years, winning 9 of them. Congratulations to both teams for a hard fought series.

Some details from the series are listed below, if anyone has more details from the series, please email them to cbellis54@zoominternet.net and I will post them on the website.

Armstrong Beer won game 1 of the series 6-1.

Game 2 was a pitcher's duel, with Armstrong's Scott Petras and Long's Market's Bucky Johns on the mound. Long's won the game 3-2, holding Armstrong off in the bottom of the 7th.

Armstrong won game 3 by a score of 5-3. They now lead the series 2 games to 1.

Game 4 was a barn burner, decided in the 8th inning. Long's won by a score of 8-6. Jarid Huth broke a 5-5 tie in the top of the eighth with a bases loaded double to left field. Long's posted 3 in the top of the inning and Armstrong answered with 1 in the bottom.

Game 5 lived up to the excitement, with the Johns brothers (Goose and Bucky) squaring off against each other on the pitchers mound. Armstrong held a 2-0 lead into the 5th inning. However, Long's posted 3 in the bottom of the 5th. In the 6th Long's got 3 more, and Armstrong only was able to put 1 on the board in the top of the 7th. It was the first time that the home team had won in the 2007 championship series.

Long's & Moose Still In Control After 5 Weeks

Long's knocked off division rival Last Laff 14-11 early in the week to solidify their lead in the East Division. They lead at 8-2 and the rest of the division is a few games back, but within a game and a half of each other.

The Moose outscored their opponents 40-14 this week to extend their division lead to 4 1/2 games in the West Division.

Other highlights in the week: 15 homeruns were hit and the website had 345 hits this week, over 100 more than any other week.

At this point in the season, The Moose has hit more homeruns (30) as the next three teams combined. (Long's 12, Armstrong 9, Last Laff 8)

Horse Race forms must be turned to Harley or Chris by Tuesday or Wednesday this week.

EAST DIVISION RACE TIGHTENS AS MAY COMES TO A CLOSE

As the first month of the season comes to a close, all four teams in the East Division are within 3 games of each other. Long's still holds a 1 game lead over the Last Laff (6-3) for first at 7-2, but Toaster's is in 3rd at 5-4, and Armstrong is only three games back at 4-5 in the bottom spot in the division.

The Moose has taken command of the West Divsion at 8-1, with no one else closer than 4-5.

Homerun totals have continued to plummet, with only 11 being hit in the past week, 7 of those were hit by the Moose.

Don't forget, each team must sell 20 horses for the fundraiser on June 22, and the $5 raffle tickets are for the month of July.

WEEK 3 UPDATE

After 3 weeks of play in the 2007 Season, Chicora Moose has strengthened its lead in the West Division, taking a 3 game lead over County Line with a record of 6-1. In the East Division, Long's Market has still only lost to The Moose and has a 1 game lead over Last Laff with a record of 6-1 as well.

Highlights from Week 3 included The Moose edging The Last Laff 11-9 on Friday in a rematch from last year's championship. Toaster's Saloon was able to pull off 1 run victories on back to back nights on Tuesday and Wednesday. Only 13 homeruns were hit this week, which is the lowest total for a week thus far this season.

We are improving in umpiring our scheduled games! This week, of the 16 umpires who were scheduled to be there, 15 of them showed up.

WEEK TWO UPDATE

After two weeks of play, the Chicora Moose has rebounded from its opening day loss, winning all of their games since to take the lead of the West Division at 4-1. The County Line is close behind at 3-2. In the East, the Last Laff has also won all their games since their opening day loss to force a tie for first with Long's Market. The ball is still flying out of the park, with 15 homeruns being hit in the week. There have been no rainouts to this point, but we have had to move a game to St. Wendelin's. Please make sure if you move a game to St. Wendelin's, you clean up afterward since the kids are still in school and have recess outside.

Don't forget, the $1 raffle tickets are due to your manangers since they are based on the evening drawing of the Daily Number for the week of May 21st. Also, be sure to buy your horse for "A Night at the Races" on Friday June 22 at Happy Hunters.

LONG'S MARKET, COUNTY LINE LEADING AFTER 1ST WEEK

Long's Market is leading the East Division, and County Line is leading the West Division after the first week of the 2007 season. Both teams are undefeated at 3 wins and 0 losses. Last season Long's finished at 13-10 in 2nd place of one division, and County Line finished 3rd in the other division at 7-17.

Other highlights of the first week included 20 homeruns being hit. That's up from only 6 homeruns hit in the first week in 2006. Leading the way this summer is newcomer Travis Trimbur. He hit 5 homeruns in the first 2 days of the 2007 season.

UPSETS HIGHLIGHT 2007 OPENING DAY

On May 6, 2007, the underdogs had the edge at 7 Hills road ball field. This year's opening day included 4 "upset" victories. First, at 12:30 Jo-De Pizza edged VFW by 1 run, after VFW led for most of the game. This is the first time in team history that Jo-De's has been in 1st place in their division. Then in the 2:00 game, Long's market knocked off the defending league champion Last Laff by a score of 8-4. Next, in the 3:30 game, County Line defeated last year's runner up Chicora Moose by 2 runs. Finally, in the 5:00 game, league champions 9 of the past 12 years Armstrong Beer was nipped by Toaster's by a score of 17-16. The Chicora League appears to be as balanced as ever which should provide an exciting 2007 season.

LEAGUE MEETINGS

On Wednesday February 28th the Chicora Area Softball League had its first league meeting of the 2007 season. 12 people were present at the meeting. The following items were discussed:

1) It is necessary for us to have an additional fund raiser due to the fact that last season, the league's expenses were greater than its revenue. We plan on having a "Horse Race" fundraiser some time in June. We will need the support of all 8 teams to make this important fund raiser a success!

2) All teams must have their $300 entry fee at the next league meeting.

3) The divisions for the 2007 season will be as follows:

East Division: Last Laff, Armstrong Beer, Toaster's Saloon, Long's Market

West Division: VFW, Chicora Moose, Jo - De Pizza, County Line Tavern

4) Opening Day will be Sunday May 6th at 7 Hills. The game schedule for the day will be as follows:

12:30 - VFW vs. Jo-De Pizza, Long's umpires
2:00 - Last Laff vs. Long's, VFW umpires
3:30 - Moose vs. County Line, Armstrong umpires
5:00 - Armstrong vs. Toaster's, Moose umpires

On Wednesay March 28th, the Chicora Area Softball League had its second meeting of the 2007 season. The details for the Horse Race Fundraiser were discussed. We will see everyone on opening day! Good luck for the 2007 season!
