ONE TEAM ONE DREAM- HEADED TO NATIONALS-December 2008
By Coach Jean Lafave
The Roger Bacon Academy’s Viking Pop Warner Midget Cheerleaders won the Mid South Region Championship on Friday in Charlotte’s Bob Cat Arena. The Vikings placed 1st in the eight state competition including teams from Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, and Kentucky. The competition consisted of approximately 100 teams competing at different age groups and levels. The Midget team will now move on to the National Pop Warner competition on December 12, at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Arena. This will be the fourth season for most of the participants, two years placing in the top ten, and last year the placing 4th in the Nation.
The Viking Midgets consist of 18 Girls ages 12-14 from the RBA Middle School, and two former students: 9th grader Erin Smith and 10th grader Rebecca Gross. Both of these ladies attend Early College High school programs, which do not offer Cheerleader programs.
This year was one of the hardest ever for this group. One of the girls lost a close family member and another members mother was diagnosed with cancer. Our team Captain was in a car accident just a few days before our local competition. This team not only made it through, but it seemed to only make them stronger. It has been a long, hard road for the Midgets, but they have worked together as a team. In fact, at Regional they received the highest scores in RBA Cheerleading history. One of the judges wrote on the score sheet, “This is the only perfect score I gave out all day”.
The Competition also included our 8-11 year old Jr. Pee Wee Roger Bacon Academy Viking team. Our JPW team includes 33 girls from RBA Charter Day School. The JPW team placed second, they will also be traveling to Disney for the National Championship. The JPWs have placed in the top five over the past two years at Nationals. In our short 4 season history we have taken all 8 of our competitive teams to Regionals, all have placed high enough to move on to Nationals in Florida. With this program, we have taken hundreds of children to Florida that may have not ever had an opportunity like this.
Our RBA Viking Football and Cheerleading Squads are members of Coastal Pop Warner. Pop Warner Little Scholars is the only sports organization in America that requires its participants to perform adequately in the classroom before permitting them play.
