Palmyra Black Knight's Sled Hockey

This year the Sticks & Biscuits 5K will be supporting and donating funds to the Palmyra Black Knight's Sled Hockey program. Sled hockey is hockey designed specifically for children and adults with physical disabilities and is played just like regular, stand-up hockey with only a few differences:
  • Instead of standing to play on skates, each player is seated on a sled. The gap between the blades can be widened - to provide increased stability for beginner players - or the gap can be narrowed for increased speed and maneuverability as the player progresses in ability.
  • Secondly, instead of using one stick, each player uses two specifically designed sticks. Each stick is shorter in length and has two picks at the end that the player uses to dig into the ice to propel them forward.
  • The third major difference is due to the design of most hockey rinks. Most hockey rinks were designed for able-bodied persons. Because of this, the bench and penalty box, the players line up on the ice directly in front of their respective bench.
