MAY 2009 NEWS LETTER.
Hi everyone it's the end of May and two weeks until the end of the season. So far we have had a pretty nice Baseball/Softball Season with the exception of mother nature. We all have dealt with numerous rain outs including a stretch of 8 days without playing any ball at all. Our trophy day is Friday June 12, 2009 please check out the website for details. There is alot going on with the organization things like trying to get a new walking track and lights for fields # 3,4. The next general meeting will be on Monday June 15Th at the shack if you want to be heard please show up to let us hear your opinions. This is a very important meeting because our elected officials for our district will be in attendance to talk about the new walking track and lights and the best way to go about getting these things for the park. Believe it or not we are starting to register for the upcoming Soccer season in-house and travel teams, again please check out the website for details. I would like to THANK all the men and women who coached this spring at 10Th ave. We could not have a successful program without you. Your time and effort are greatly appreciated. I just want to remind everyone about our 1st Annual BPYAA Golf Classic Tournament on Monday Oct 5, 2009 at the Compass Pointe Golf Course. See website for details and get your foursomes ready. Now its time to THANK all the BOARD members and the ladies that work in the shack who do a fantastic job providing great food in a clean and fun atmosphere. Great job to all !!!!!

Respectfully Yours
Darrin Stevens.

April 2009

Wow what a fantastic opening day we had on Saturday April 18, 2009. I want to thank all the people who helped get the fields looking their absolute best which includes all the painting that was done, dragging and lining of fields, putting up new home and away signs, home run distance signs and field marking signs. Other improvements include job boxes for each field and a new area for storing ball dirt. Our mission here at BPYAA is to make sure that everyone that signs up to play organized sports at our complex has as safe, fun, and enjoyable experience and will want to come back year after year, We are trying very hard to give the people of Brooklyn Park and surrounding areas a product they are to be proud of. Meaning a great facility and well organized sports like Baseball, Softball, Soccer and Basketball. Its not easy and all constructive comments are always welcomed. If you would like to attend our meetings you may do so every third Monday of the month at the Hammond's Lane Police Station at 7:30 pm. Some upcoming events that I would like to remind everyone about like our Spring Dance on Saturday May 23, 2009 at The Roland Terrace Democratic Club. The dance begins at 7:00pm until Midnight and tickets are $35.00 per. Please see a board member for tickets or come to the shack. Also all golfers please mark your calendars for our 1st annual golf tournament on Monday Oct 5, 2009 at The Compass Pointe Golf Course. Well our Baseball/Softball Season is in full swing and I hope that everyone has a great time and alot of fun. Please be on the lookout for Travel and in-house Soccer registration for the fall season.

Thanks so much!
Darrin Stevens.

MARCH 2009

Well finally Spring has sprung and its time to play ball. All the teams have been picked, the uniforms have been ordered and the Fields are being ready for opening day on Saturday April 18, 2009. Everything is on track for a fun and successful season this year.

We have a couple of improvements this year like each field has its own storage box so coaches have everything they need to properly maintain their field. In these boxes we will have bases, base plugs, chalk, stay dry and a base lining machine. Also we built a storage area for ball dirt in a Central location in the park so that coaches can maintain the pitching mounds and home plate areas of each field. Remember that on opening day we need every team to be at the Brooklyn Park Elementary School parking lot at 9:00am so we can begin the parade promptly at 9:45am. This day is going to be alot of fun for all, we are going to have a Pit Beef Stand, Cotton Candy Stand, a moon bounce and a blow up obstacle course. Also classic cars from the Street Survivors car club among others will be in the parade. In order to have a great opening day we must spruce up the park before hand so on Saturday April 11, 2009 we will have a clean up day. So if you can help out I would really appreciate it. We will start at 9:00am until finished coffee and donuts will be provided.

Our Spring dance is on Saturday May 23, 2009 please make time to attend this event it is alot of fun with great food and drinks. Tickets can be purchased at the shack or by contacting Darrin Stevens 410-627-3611. Don't forget about the Chic-fil-A night on Tuesday April 14, 2009 from 4:00-7:00pm. Hope to see you there!!!

FEBRUARY 2009
It's late February and a-lot is going on. First our Basketball program is wrapping up next week with a trophy ceremony on March 7, 2009 at Brooklyn Park Middle School. I would like to take this time and thank all the Basketball coaches who stepped up this year. Being a coach is very special it gives you a great sense of pride in teaching young people about sports. It also gives you a chance to make a real difference in their lives outside of sports also. So Thanks very much and I really appreciate all of you. We have a couple of fund raising dates all of you need to know about. The first one is Tuesday April 14, 2009 at Chic-fil-A from 4:00-7:00pm in Glen Burnie. Next is BPYAA is sponsoring the Shaw and Sons Carnival again this year. You can purchase tickets for the carnival at the 10Th Ave shack or by contacting Darrin Stevens at 410-627-3611 or Mrs Audrey at 410-789-0314. When you buy tickets with us you save $8.00 per ticket. Please see website for more info. Also Attention all golfers we are going to have our 1st annual golf tournament on Monday October 5, 2009. It will be held at The Compass Point Golf Course in Pasadena, MD. Please see our website next month for more details. Now Baseball and Softball is just weeks away so we need to get the park ready and that means our annual clean up day will be on Saturday April 11, 2009 starting at 9:00am until the job is done. So please mark your calenders and make time to make our fields the best they can possibly be. Doughnuts and coffee will be provided. A special thank you is in order for all who supported our dances for Dean Callenders Softball Team and Kevin Conley's select baseball team, they were well attended and very successful. I hope to see all those same people at The Roland Terrace Democratic Club on Saturday May 23, 2009 for our BPYAA Spring Dance. Also our batting cage raffle ticket drive is in full swing but, I do not know if we are going to raise the money needed in time to build it before the season starts we are going to try. A guage or meter will be put on the website to show how much money has been raised in the very near future. Last but not least I really need to thank Rec and Parks for the light that has been installed behind field # 2. I asked for this light because of all the illegal activity that goes on there at night on the weekends hopefully this works.

Respectfully yours
Darrin Stevens.

JANUARY 2009
Here it is the end of January our Basketball program is in full swing and Baseball/Softball practice is right around the corner. We will start our registration for spring sports soon so check the website the Maryland Gazette along with signs posted all around the area. There is a lot going on concerning the organization and anyone that wants to get involved in making BPYAA a great place to play organized sports please contact a Board member and we will put you to work. Our 10Th Ave complex has gone through some real positive changes over the last couple of years things like a new paint job for the concession stand a sign on 10Th ave that welcomes everyone more wooden guardrails that make the park look like a park and a landscaping project that will continue every year. As president I am in constant contact with rec and parks and have developed a really nice relationship with them. This relationship is a give and take one which means the county is much more willing to help those who help themselves. I have a wish list of items that I would like the county to address like a new parking lot and also a new walking track and so on but, one of our most pressing needs right now is a new batting gage and storage area lets face it not only is it an eyesore it's just not functional. So we are going to build a batting gage for both Baseball and Softball with lights so that it can be used whenever. A new storage area will be build also to protect the soccer goals we purchase along with other things we have. This project is overdue and will enhance our program in the long term. We will fund this project with the sale of raffle tickets at $2.00 per ticket x 5000 which equals $10.000. So with each registration this year part of what you pay goes to this fund but, I need everyone to sell more in order to reach our goal so please take the time to help the organization. The Raffle drawing goes off at the spring dance check the website for details.

December 2008
Hello and hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and looking forward to a happy and safe New Year. Well all the teams have been picked and we are ready to play Basketball. Our 7 year old program took a hit this year registration wise so we had to merge with Linthicum Ferndale and play at Hilltop Elementary. Our Travel leagues seem to be doing very well. I want to thank Donald Dismuke and Mike Mallory for there hard work and dedication to the kids that play with BPYAA. They are our co/Basketball Commissioners so when you see them at the gyms this winter thank them for a job well done. I know it's hard to think about Baseball right now with it being the last couple of days of 2008 and also with the Ravens doing so well and headed to the PLAYOFFS. But April will be here before we all know it so look for more info concerning Baseball/Softball Registration either by E-mail or this website or the Maryland Gazette. Just one more thing I would to talk about and that is we are going to have a $2.00 Raffle this year when you register for Baseball/Softball. All the money raised will be strictly earmarked for a new Batting cage with lights that can be used for either Baseball and Softball. Also with the Economy the way it is today as a Board we have decided to basically keep Baseball/Softball Registration for 2009 the same as 2008.

November 2008
November 12, 2008  --   Hi everyone and Happy Thanksgiving. Well our outdoor Soccer season is now over and was very fun and successful. I want to thank the teams from Arthur Slade and South Baltimore for coming to 10Th ave and playing with us. I hope we can do the same next year. Also I want to acknowledge our Travel Soccer teams who did very well this year, thanks to all involved. We are getting ready to start our Basketball season soon. Donald Dismuke and Mike Mallory are co/commissioners and they need the support of past players and first time players to sign up on time so uniforms can be ordered and teams can be picked. Being a commissioner of any sport here at BPYAA is not an easy job. I would like to introduce all the new people who accepted the commissioner jobs for the next two years. Donald Dismuke is the new Sports and co/Basketball Commissioner, Mike Mallory is returning as co/Basketball Commissioner, Tony Gray is our Baseball Commissioner, Troy Young is the Travel Soccer Commissioner, Latroy Wands is the in-house Soccer Commissioner and Mike Payne and Dean Callender are co/Softball Commissioners. With this job they are responsible for player registration, ordering of uniforms, ordering of trophies, picture day and the advertising of the sport they are in charge of. So when you see these guys out and about or up at the field or gym, please thanks them for the job they do and if you can offer any help I am sure they would appreciate it. Well I hope everyone stays safe and en joy's the holidays. See you next year!

Respectfully Yours
Darrin Stevens.

October 2008
Hi everyone October is almost over and a-lot has gone on since Septembers newsletter. We have elected a new Executive Board along with new Board members who will serve a two year term. You can find out who they are by going to our website and seeing a picture of them along with their title and contact info. Our Soccer season is winding down and it has been a great year for our Travel Teams. I think both teams have only lost one game. Great job to all involved! In-house Soccer will be finished on Thursday November 13, 2008. We will have championship games at 10Th Ave for ages 6-8 and 9-13 on this day. Also Linthicum Ferndale wants to use our field on November 14,15,and 16Th for a Soccer Tournament that our boy's travel team will be playing in please come out and support our team. Our Basketball registration is in full swing you have until December 1, 2008. If you sign up after this date you will pay a late fee of $25,00. Now on an organizational note with new Executive Board members and Board members coming on it is important that all be held accountable for their job duties. I understand that this a volunteer organization but, we have an obligation to the children of BPYAA to do the best job possible. In order to do a good job communication is the key for a smooth running program. Also if anyone would like to become more involved please contact me or another board member. Last but not least we have two people that volunteer a-lot of their that are going through a rough time right now. Stacey Richardson has just lost her father to a long illness and Terri Wenger was in a very bad car accident with a long recovery ahead of her please keep them in your thoughts.

September 2008
Well its been a couple of months since the last news letter and we are at the start of a new and exciting soccer season. Anne Arundel county promised us that if they built a new soccer field with lights that we would have all the travel games here at 10Th ave we could handle and they were right. We have 57 scheduled games on the multipurpose field between 9/5/08 and 11/01/08. In order to get home games for travel soccer you must have six teams involved in the league. We only have to teams so we asked Linthicum Ferndale and Arthur Slade if they would like to use our field as their home field. They both brought two teams in the league which got us to the magic number of six teams. I want to thank them for this, our organization really does appreciate them playing games here. Also we are getting ready for our in-house soccer program to start playing their games beginning on Saturday 9/20/08 thru Saturday 11/08/08. We joined forces with South Baltimore again this year along with Arthur Slade. All games will either be played here or at South Baltimore on Wednesdays and Saturdays. I have had the county come out to the park and fix all of the bleachers and place two spot a pots on the north end of the complex for every ones convenience. Also we had more trees planted around the multipurpose field. I think all of us have a responsibility to make sure that we take great care of our park and be proud of what we have here at 10Th ave. So coaches when your games are over make sure your team picks up all trash in and around the dugouts and put in the trash cans that are well provided. Parents if you see your children or other kids pulling or playing on the newly planted trees please tell them to NOT do this. Also the bleachers are for sitting at watching games being played not for kids to jump on or turn over so again if you see this going on with any child please tell them to STOP it. Last but not least Basketball Registration is right around the corner LOOK for updates soon.

April 2008
Hi everyone here we are one week into the Baseball/Softball season the park looks great and things are going well on the ball diamonds. We had a fantastic opening day the weather for the most part held up and the parade went well. I want to thank Troop 550 for being the color guard from the Boy Scouts and the Street Survivors Classic Car Group for showing up as well along with the Snuggle Bear from Unilever and the Chic-Fil-A Cow without these people our parade would not be as special as it is. I would like to let everyone know that BPYAA made just under $4,000.00 this year by sponsoring the Shaw and Sons Carnival. We may have an opportunity to do it again in June if we can I think we should do it. Kim Kincer is responsible for putting us in touch with Shaw and Sons and hopfully creating a partnership for years to come. Thank you Kim! Another fundraiser we are currently doing is Gianni's. Mike Payne is in charge of this and doing a fabulous job. I hope that everyone does their part and sells sells sells. The shack needs some more volunteers other than the same people that always work please come in and sign up to work. Last but not least is the dance it is just three weeks away come to the shack and buy your tickets soon it will be a good time but I really want to sell at least 200 tickets.

March 2008
Hi everyone sorry this month’s news letter is so late but a-lot has been going on at 10Th ave. All the light poles have been installed and we are just a couple of weeks away from having the most up to date lighting system in the county. I would like thank Lighting Maintenance and all who were involved from Anne Arundel County for their hard work in making sure the lights were up for our Opening Day. With the new lights and the new fields it is a new era at BPYAA. We should be very proud and excited about what we have to offer the children in our community. Now it's time to make sure that we take good care of what we have. Tomorrow is our spring clean up day and we will be painting the player benches, picnic tables, wooden guard rails and the park benches. We will also be planting trees around the park and flowers at the entrance sign. The concession stand will need a good cleaning along with the bathrooms. Not only do our children play Baseball/Softball at 10Th Ave but the community uses it as well. Everyday dozens of people walk the track or just come and sit at the picnic tables and eat lunch on their breaks from work. So now that we have one of the best parks in the county let’s keep it that way and always strive to improve.

Opening Day is just two weeks away so here is a little info to hopefully make things easier on everyone. All uniforms have been ordered for Baseball/Softball and as of 3/28/08 only some very minor issues have come up with them. I have been assured they will be in before the start of the season. We have 23 Baseball teams and 8 Softball teams this year. We are also in discussion with an elite girl’s team which should start this fall. More info later. The Opening Day Parade will begin at 9:30am from Brooklyn Park Elem. Please be there at 8:45am. Opening Day Ceremony's will start at 10:30am on Field #5. All games should start at Noon. Pray for sunshine like we had last year. I really want to thank our new and returning sponsors this year. Sponsorship is at an all time high and without the business community we could not operate like we do.

February 2008
A WORD FROM THE PRESIDENT

Well it’s mid February and two weeks into Baseball/Softball registration and only about 30 children signed up so far. We have put up signs, banners and fliers in all the local schools. We have even advertised in the Maryland Gazette two weeks before registration. Come on people what are we waiting for? There is a couple of weeks left to sign up your children please let’s get it done. If we have to extend registration all this does is create a lot of needless stress on the Board members running the organization. Things like ordering of uniforms and placing children on teams in a timely manner. Not to mention we can NOW register on-line. Ok some updates on some issues. First is the lighting project all the lights have been taken down and all the conduit has been laid underground. The next step is putting the new poles up and that is going to take a string of good weather. I briefly want to remind everyone about the Spring Dance on Friday May 16, 2008. Get your tickets fast it’s going to be a great time. Secondly we are sponsoring the Shaw & Sons Carnival again this year from March 20 thru March 30Th. Tickets will be on sale at the local schools or by contacting Kim Kincer our Treasurer. Please support this fund raiser it could really make us a good deal of money. As always details of the dance and our fund raising is found on our website at www.BPYAA.org If anyone has any different ideas on how to get children signed up on time I would love to hear from you. Also we are always looking for new sponsors to help fund our organization so if you or someone you know would like to help in this manner please contact Darrin Stevens at jds0904@yahoo.com or see Mrs. Audrey.

IMPROVEMTNS AT 10th AVENUE PARK

Just a couple of small improvements at BPYAA to make things a little nicer. Two weeks ago I bought a brand new refrigerator which is the final piece of commercial equipment needed for the shack to be in compliance with the county's health department. We also voted to buy a digital scoreboard for Basketball and everyone seems to like it very much. It makes watching the game more enjoyable for the fans.

MONTHLY MEETING AND CARNIVAL INFORMATION

January 2008
Wow can you believe that it is already 2008. How time flies it seems like not too long ago we had our Opening Day Baseball/Softball Parade. Well here we are at the start of our Basketball Season we have 15 in-house teams and 5 travel teams this year our season will run through March 2, 2008. Even though it’s Basketball Season we will soon be registering for the upcoming Baseball/Softball Season. Registration starts February 2, thru March 2, 2008.

Saturdays and Sundays only at Brooklyn Park Elementary 11:00am to 1:00pm. You can also register on-line at www.BPYAA.org there are NO SHACK FEES or RAFFLE TICKETS to sell this year at all. We have a new incentive program this year for parents or kids to save money or even get a free registration for the sport of their choice and a free BPYAA jacket. Details at registration or on the website. Please take advantage of this great deal it’s a win win for you and for BPYAA. I also want to remind everyone that our Spring Dance will be here before we know it. Last year’s dance was a big success so don't miss out on the fun get your tickets early it is really a great time. Again details about the Spring Dance will be on the website soon. I have been in contact with North County High School about its teenage volunteer community service program. I would like the kids that they send me to work in the concession stand under Mrs. Audrey's supervision and do some field maintenance work at the park. I think it’s a good opportunity for the young people in our schools to learn and be a responsible part of the local community. I am also interested in more adult volunteers to help out as much as possible. If you can help please contact a Board Member.

VOLUNTEERS AND SPONSORS

Along with asking High School students to help out at BPYAA. I was thinking the other day wouldn't it be nice if we could get more experienced help also. So I decided to ask the senior citizens that attend the Senior Center on Hammond's Lane if they would like to work in our concession stand. A volunteer sign up sheet has been posted. If anyone knows of a person that is looking for something to do during our Baseball/Softball Season please contact a Board member.

Local sponsors play a very big part in our organization. Without our friends in the community it would be rather hard to do things like buy trophies and concession stand equipment. So I am asking everyone to seek new sponsors and thank the old ones. The more sponsors we get involved with BPYAA the less fundraiser we have to do.

SPECIAL NOTES

I would like to thank Kenny and Missy Buchal for printing all the Baseball/Softball Flyer's for the last couple of years. It really saves us a lot of time and money. I also want to wish Terri Wenger good luck on the Polar Bear Plunge this weekend she has been taking the plunge for a long time now and and it could not be for a better cause. BPYAA donated $100.00 to the Maryland Special Olympics.

BPYAA CARNIVAL

We are having a carnival again this year. The carnival tickets will be in by the time

Registration begins. The cost of the tickets will be $ 10.00. The carnival will be held from March 20 - March 30 2008. Please come and join us, have fun and support the organization.

GENERAL MEETING

A reminder our next General Meeting is on Mon January 28th 2008

December 2007
I would like to take this time to thank all of the people in the organization that helped make 2007 a fun a successful year. The year was full of challenges dealing all of the physical changes that took place so far at our 10th Ave. facility. The Department of Parks & Recs has done a fantastic job with the construction of the new fields and the wooden guard rails they installed. The Department of Natural Resources donated trees to us this year with more to come next year. I really need to thank Paul Ciatola who works for Recs & Parks for all the hard work he and his outstanding crew do for us. They are responsible for grass cutting, tree trimming and making the infields the best they can be. They have also installed the benches at the park with more to come. Great Job Guys. Just this fall I have contacted some of the kids that go to North County High School that play sports with BPYAA and asked them if they would like to do their community volunteer work here at 10th ave. I have signed up three young men so far they are doing a great job in keeping the park clean and making sure the Soccer field is lined and goals are out and put away after every game. They also help take out the trash, plant trees and do whatever it takes to make playing at BPYAA a pleasant experience. I also want to thank the Board for all the long hours and hard work behind the scenes that not many people see. It sometimes is a thankless job but a job worth doing. I would also like to thank Shawn Ludwig for his years of service at 10Th Ave. He is up the field basically every night doing whatever needs to be done. He also has been Soccer Commissioner and Softball Commissioner over the years. He is stepping down in December as a Board Member and Softball Commissioner. Great Job Shawn don’t be a stranger at the field. There are really too many people to thank and name in this article you know who you are. Thanks so much for your time it means a lot. It is my goal to make BYPAA’S 10th Ave the very best it can be and with the continued help and support of people in the organization and the local community it will be a Fantastic place to play sports or just relax at the park. Let’s make next year an even better one together!!!
