    Softball is directly descended from baseball and thus contains many similarities; however there are several pronounced differences. The primary reason for these differences is that softball was originally intended to be played indoors.

    Softball: Growing Popularity
    • 1,700 colleges nationwide have women’s fastpitch teams (Amateur Softball Association). 1,100 colleges nationwide offer fastpitch scholarships for women (NCAA, NJCAA, October 2001).

    • In the 6-to-17 age group, girls comprise 62% of all slowpitch and 81% of all fastpitch players in the country (SGMA Report: U.S. Participation in Team Sports, 2000).
