As of February, 2004 the defending world champion of men's fast-pitch softball is New Zealand, while the current women's champion is the United States.

Softball is the most popular participant sport in the United States. An estimated 56 million Americans will play at least one game of softball during a year.

Softball is directly descended from baseball and thus contains many similarities; however there are several pronounced differences. The primary reason for these differences is that softball was originally intended to be played indoors.

Softball: Growing Popularity
• 1,700 colleges nationwide have women’s fastpitch teams (Amateur Softball Association). 1,100 colleges nationwide offer fastpitch scholarships for women (NCAA, NJCAA, October 2001).

• In the 6-to-17 age group, girls comprise 62% of all slowpitch and 81% of all fastpitch players in the country (SGMA Report: U.S. Participation in Team Sports, 2000).
