ABOUT THE NATIONAL PREMIER SOCCER LEAGUE
The National Premier Soccer League (NPSL), is the successor of the Men’s Premier Soccer League (MPSL). The MPSL was a regional men’s soccer league that was made-up from teams in the western states of California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah and Idaho, that formed in 2002 and was designed to provide men with a highly competitive league. This 2005 season the league has been recreated into an expanded national league to accommodate teams from all over the nation. Each team plays a minimum of 16 to a maximum of 20 regular season games. The teams are comprised of players who play at the highest levels of soccer available to men.
The NPSL is sanctioned by the United States Adult Soccer Association (USASA) as an affiliate of the United States Soccer Federation (USSF), the ruling body for soccer in the United States and FIFA the world’s ruling body for soccer. The MPSL initially operated as a division of the Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL) in Region IV.
Integrity, Success and Longevity is what the National Premier Soccer League stands for. The NPSL operates and is managed as a team run league. The structure of the league will allow each participating team to have one vote on the executive committee. Each team is owned and operated individually. Each team is responsible for maintaining league minimum standards and for raising its own operating cash. The existing team owners, that comprise the league management team, approve all new teams who desire to join the league.
The inaugural season for the MPSL was in 2003 with the season starting in April and running up until August. The MPSL was created in conjunction with and based on the WPSL Women’s Premier Soccer League – it is the first time in the world’s history that a women’s sports league gave birth to a men’s league.
In the 2004 season, the MPSL doubled in the number of teams that played in the league and have continued to expand. The expansion of the league included teams from Albuquerque, New Mexico; Las Vegas, Nevada; Chico, California; San Diego, California; Santa Rosa, California; Salinas, California; and Sacramento, California. These seven teams make up the Western Division. The Midwestern Division includes, Grand Rapids, Michigan; Detroit, Michigan; Minneapolis, Minnesota; St. Paul, Minnesota; Milwaukee, Minnesota; and Madison, Wisconsin. Now in its 3, season the league has gone from a regional to a national level and will be made up of between 13-14 teams This highly competitive league helps all the teams gain access to elite players to fill their team roster, including but not limited to National Team, former and current University and College, foreign, amateur, former professional and youth players.
New changes and new teams are coming in 2006. With the addition of the 5 teams in the west, it makes sense to split into 2 conferences.
To help with travel and rivalries the west will be split into a northern and southern conference. The north will consist of Chico, San Jose, Sacramento, Salinas, Sonoma, and Redwood City. The south will consist of San Diego, SOCAL, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Denver, and Albuquerque,
