CRUSH 14U Tournament Results

Mining City Classic
Mining City Classic cancelled due to rain.
The Mining City Classic was officially rained out on Saturday morning. Officials made the call after the rain Friday was relentless and continued overnight. The decision came before the snow. So, most of the teams entered in the Amateur Softball Association girls' fastpitch tournament — which carried age brackets of 16-and-under, 14-and-under, 12-and-under and 10-and-uder — left Butte Saturday. However, two teams from Las Vegas, Nev., stayed and played exhibitions with Butte teams in Anaconda at the Charlotte Yeoman Martin Complex. Four more exhibitions involving the Las Vegas squads are planned Sunday, two each at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., tournament director Scott Paffhausen said. "So, that's where we're sitting," Paffhausen said after talking about the failed attempts to guide the tournament through poor playing conditions while rain and snow took over the scene. Almost 40 teams were entered in the tourney. Work on playing host to the meet began the middle of last winter. Games were to have been played at Stodden Park, Copper Mountain Park and the Longfellow fields.

Tournament Briefs: Crush got a tough draw facing two of the top four teams in the state in the first two rounds. Bad first innings defensively in both games doomed the team although the squad had numerous chances offensively against the Bandits and trailed 6-4 entering the 6th inning.
Coaches Notes: I met with state JO commissioner Ed Kriskovich about the blind draw format because it is infair to some teams. Kriskovich suggested that I propose a way of seeding four teams for the state tournament by using results from tournaments around Montana. Because of the blind draw, the Bandits and the Orange Bulldogs played each other in the first round and again in the championship game with the Bandits winning the state title after beating the Bulldogs twice. I will make a proposal to the state JO committee in January at the state meeting.

Tournament Briefs:
|
Crush 14-U won the B division championship on Father's day.
Jordan Petersen pitched the Crush into the championship game with two wins on Sunday and Jessi Apple overcame early game jitters to pitch a 7 inning gem in the championship game.
Player after player came up with big hits or big clutch bunts.
Kyra Dorvall was outstanding behind the plate catching all three games on Sunday.
The two wins on Sunday were come from behind wins. |
Sadie Pilgeram is helped off the
field after the Selects pitcher hit
her in the leg :( |
Coaches Notes:
The team improved significantly all weekend. This team will become all that we hoped with hard work.

Tournament Briefs: The Crush team went 2-1 in pool play and drew the #8 seed in the A bracket of the tournament. A bad first inning against the Selects set the tone and the team never recovered losing 9-1. MWC has steadily moved up in the state as now a top tier team, that can compete with the best. Defense Defense Defense will be the theme as the club prepares for state.
