Halloween horror at home for Dunfermline Reign U16's!

Dunfermline Reign 66 - 81 West Lothian Wolves
U16 NL Div 2
Sat 31st Oct '09

After their first win of the season, Dunfermline were feeling quite confident that their home game against The Wolves would be a success. Unfortunately Dunfermline could not convert that confidence into effort on the defence and on offense in the first quarter, allowing the opposition to take offensive and defensive rebounds. This lack of effort culminated in an early time-out from their Head Coach, Darryl Wood. Trying to re-focus the team and persuade them to play some good basketball. This was not taken on-board by the players and at the end of the first quarter Dunfermline were trailing by 9 points!

The second quarter was slightly better, with the starting players taking a rest and the bench coming on and putting some points on the board and getting some confidence in the team. This ended when No. 13 Jack Guyan, picked up an unsportsmanlike foul. This did not help Reign in focussing, and ending the half with a 18 deficit.

After a refocusing from their coaches at half-time, Dunfermline came out onto the court at the start of the third quarter hoping to put an end to this lead their opponents had created. With them starting to box-out and starting to get good looks at the basket. Dunfermline were able to decrease the lead to 8.

The fourth quarter did not start well for Dunfermline, with them losing the intensity in the game yet again. It seemed like they did not want the win. But a time-out and switch of players soon changed things! All 5 players started to steal the ball off The Wolves and started sinking their shots. It was the Dunfermline Reign classical 7 minute run. Unfortunately, whilst West Lothian were taking a time-out the lighting in the hall was cut off. This disturbed both sides, possibly ending in lack of concentration. However, this did not affect the Dunfermline side and they slowly decreased the Wolves lead. Then from nowhere it all stopped. Dunfermline started to concede silly fouls, which ended in two of their players No.7 Colin MacDonald and No.13 Jack Guyan fouling out. The end score was 66-81 to West Lothian.

Reign Scorers - J Guyan – 22, K Gemmell – 16, S Hogg – 10, C MacDonald – 8, D MacDonald – 4, C MacDonald – 4, K Atherton – 2

Reign Cadets secure first 'w' with convincing win over the Chiefs!

U16 National League Div 2
Dunfermline Reign 64 – 40 Cumbernauld Chiefs

With the absence of their Head Coach, Darryl Wood, Dunfermline Reign Cadets were still able to turn around a run of narrow defeats to secure their first victory of the season. Assistant Coaches, Keiran Lynch and Stuart Harwood, were able to motivate the team and steer the team into playing an enjoyable game of basketball. The team took this on board and with the whole team relaxed they were able to achieve a lead of 18-4, in the first quarter; playing solid offence and high intensity defence.

This allowed the team to get some players who previously, had very little game time in the previous games a chance to shine. With the bench coming on and giving the starters a rest, the vibe from the team was immense. Everyone was enjoying the game, and happy to sit or play. But towards the end the intensity started to decrease and worry started to strike the players. With a well timed time-out taken by the coaches, the heads were lifted and were informed that the game was there for the taking it was just a matter of did they want it? At the end of the half, Dunfermline were leading by 16 points.

The third quarters started off slow, and with it being Dunfermline Reign’s somewhat weak spot, Cumbernauld were able to decrease the lead marginally. This was not going down well for Dunfermline, and after a few substitutions they were back on track. Ending the quarter 42-28 in the favour of the Reign.

The fourth quarter was a quarter that Dunfermline Reign only needed to play safe and keep the lead. This almost registered automatically, and with the team in high-spirits they passed well, shot well, and played a good last quarter. Cumbernauld did not seem to have the intensity or will power to play to the level Dunfermline were playing at and with Dunfermline Reign 27 points up and 3 seconds to go and a time-out called by Cumbernauld, it was clear that the big win was Dunfermline’s. So as a fun end, a line zone was set by Keiran Lynch and a buzzer bank-shot made from half-court sending Cumbernauld go off on a high note, even without a win. Reign were delighted as it was their first win of the season!

Reign Scorers: Sam Hogg - 26, Kris Gemmell- 15, Jack Guyan- 14, K Atherton - 4, Colin MacDonald - 3, Craig MacDonald - 2

Reign slip to narrow single point defeat against Glasgow in season opener!

U16 Men National League Div 2
Saturday 19th Sept '09
Glasgow City 68 – 67 Dunfermline Reign

After a long road-trip away to Glasgow City’s home court Dunfermline Reign Cadets played an intense Glasgow City Cadet Men team. It seemed the game was all Dunfermline’s in the first quarter with City unable to stop their shots. Unfortunately, they lost the lead in the second quarter leaving them well behind at half-time.

Their Head Coach, Darryl Wood, and Assistant Coaches, Keiran Lynch and Stuart Hardwood re-focused the team at the half and directed their players to get their “heads up and start playing some proper basketball offensively and defensively.” This did not sink in to the team fully in the third quarter still leaving them trailing 15 going into the final period.

It seemed all hope was lost for Dunfermline Reign. However, after clear direction from the coaches in the interval between the third and fourth quarter, the Reign were able to pull it back to a three point game. A 13 point run from Dunfermline silenced the crowd. Reign then knocked down two free-throws to make it a one point game. With 23 seconds left on the clock, time was not on Glasgow City’s side at the rate Dunfermline were playing at. However, with clever play and holding the ball Glasgow City were able to hold the lead until the final buzzer went and it was over.

An excruciatingly painful game to lose by one point. Never the less no heads were down on either team’s faces and both teams could say it was a good game.

Reign Cadets lose out after long trip north to play Grampian Flyers!

Grampian Flyers 54 - 46 Dunfermline Reign
U16 National League Div 2

After a long road trip up to Aberdeen, Reigns cadets suffered a poor first quarter against their northern rivals. Flyers managed to hold the Reign scoreless in the period and it wasn't until the second period that Reign began to find a way through the Flyers defence. The second period saw Reign mount a comeback through some hard-nosed defence and good finishing on offence.

Reign continued their assault in the second half harassing the Flyers and pulling the home teams lead back to a single point going into the final period.

In the final stanza Flyers found their form again and started to stretch the lead. Reign continued to keep the intensity up on defence but were unable to convert their chances at the other end. In the end the Flyers ran out victors 54 - 48.
