OUR FOOTBALL PROGRAM
Head coaches and assistant coaches are screened and approved by the Board of Directors. A high standard of moral and ethical ideals are stressed by all who are teaching the youth involved in our league. Each coach candidate must pass a criminal background check prior to their consideration to be a coach in our league. All head coaches and their assistant coaches are volunteers, and receive no monetary compensation for their services. Each coach, in his training, not only emphasizes scholastic ability, but makes sure that high academic standards are kept throughout the entire football season.
All Southwest Coaching Candidates are required to complete the following:
(1) Application - Coaches returning or new candidates will fill out the SWYFA Volunteer Application Form. This will include authorization to conduct a background check.
(2) Interview – The interview will be conducted by no less than 3 members of the SWYFA Board of Directors.
(3) Contract – Agree to the terms and conditions as stated in the Coaches Contract. Currently, SWYFA uses the ASEP Coaches Contract.
(4) Certification – The candidate must have a current recognized Coaching Certification for the season in which they wish to coach. If not, then the candidate must complete the certification required by SWYFA.
(5) NGYFL Certification/Test – The test will be based on the North Georgia Youth Football League’s rules and By-Laws. NGYFL sponsors this test and is usually given in July.
Along with football instruction, emphasis is placed on other, intangible factors which affect the game, including sportsmanship, loyalty, and positive attitude. Our coaches also emphasize academic success in school.
Football is offered in the following groups:

*The weight listed in this column represents the MAXIMUM weight for the player at weigh-in.
Weights are strictly enforced with a weigh-in prior to each football game. Any player not making weight during weigh-in will not be permitted to play in the game. If a player is over the official weight, there are two options to choose from: (1) move up to the next higher weight division; (2) be removed from the roster. No extra weight or allowances are permitted. With the following exception: Five pounds will be added to each weight division after the 4th week of scheduled games for the current season. Players not making a team base weight at least once by the close of weigh-ins after the 4th week of scheduled games for the current season will be ineligible to play within the league.
PRACTICE SCHEDULES
Practice begins on July 28th. Practice will be held every day until the first day of school. Times are generally 6:30-8:30 p.m. Once school starts, practices are limited to three days per week, usually Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday.
Since football is by its nature an all-weather sport, and since we play football games in rainy weather, we will usually practice in the rain. Of course, if the rain becomes severe, or there is lightening/thunder in close proximity, practice will be temporarily suspended or canceled, for the safety of everyone. Your coaches will discuss specifics on procedures each team will use regarding inclement weather.
FIRST DAY OF PRACTICE - WHAT TO EXPECT
The first week is spent on physical conditioning and acclimation to the weather and the equipment. SWYFA follows the Hot Weather Procedures as outline by the Cobb County School District. Football players would be well advised to get plenty of exercise during the summer months, especially out in the sun. It is very hot in August, and if you have been spending the summer in the air conditioning, being a couch potato, you are going to have a difficult time getting used to the heat.
A portion of the first day of practice will be filled with administrative and welcoming duties. You will meet your new coaches and fellow players, and learn the philosophy of your team. Your coaches may discuss a number of other items as well.
