BRYC Azul Only Local Team to Advance to WAGS U13 Cup Flight Semifinals October 12, 2005
 | | Ellicott City, MD - Despite torrential rain over the Columbus holiday weekend, the U13 and U15 age groups were the lucky ones who got their games in during the prestigious 2005 WAGS tournament. On Sunday, October 9th, Braddock Road Azul opened their first match of the tournament with a quick and decisive 4-1 victory over a team from California, the Del Mar Sharks. | In their second game, Azul came ahead of Eclipse Select 92-93, Illinois State Champions, with a score of 1-0. For the final match of Sunday, Azul went head-to-head with Dallas Texans Red, Texas State Semifinalist. The Texans scored first, but Azul fought back fiercely and answered them with an equalizer goal with time almost running out. Having the best record in Group C of the Cup Flight, Azul advanced to Semi-finals as the group winner. The Texans also advanced to Semi-finals as a Wildcard team.
On Monday, October 10th, Azul competed against Michigan Hawks – ranked #7 in Region II – in the Semifinal game. Although evenly matched, Azul came up short and lost to Hawks 2-0. In the end, Dallas Texans Red prevailed by defeating the Hawks 1-0 and took the trophy home. |

 | | Virginia Beach, VA - With the State Cup and Regional I tournaments now behind them, once again the Azul packed-up and headed for Virginia Beach, this time to compete in the Virginia Beach Sun Cup. The tournament kicked-off the Azul’s pre-season debut as a U13 team (teenagers!). | | An early morning first game against the Triangle Futbol Girls 92 Navy (NC) got the Azul up at the crack of dawn and ready for some futbol! With finesse and skill, the Azul soundly defeated Triangle 8-0. The second game, a late and very warm afternoon game against the CSSC Mystics (VA) netted a 3-0 win for the Azul and a berth in the semi-finals against SAC Fury (MD). Just when they thought it couldn’t get any hotter, the Azul faced CASL 92 Spartan Premier (NC) in the finals game in sweltering heat of more than 100 degrees. | Azul Represents the Great State of Virginia Brilliantly as Region 1 Finalists! July 5, 2005 |
 | | | | Virginia Beach, VA - After four games over the same number of days, the BRYC Azul played a fifth game (and its final game at the “U-12” level) at the 2005 United States Youth Soccer Region 1 Championship Tournament. The team represented the great state of Virginia brilliantly and made its many fans (including several groups that just “showed up to support the Virginia team they had heard so much about”) very proud!! After beating Eastern New York (5 to 0), New Hampshire (3 to 1), and Rhode Island (3 to 0) in regular bracket play, the Azul moved on to face Eastern Pennsylvania in the semifinal match. The Azul won the semifinal game (5 to 1) and advanced to the final championship game against Maryland. At the end of two halves of championship play, the score was 0 to 0. Following tournament rules, the teams then commenced two 10-minute overtime periods. In overtime, with both teams’ players charging the others’ goals, fans knew they were watching the highest level of U-12 girls soccer. The Maryland team scored twice in overtime and the Azul once, ceding victory for now to Maryland. While no loss is easy to accept, the Azul had a great tournament. It capped off a very a very successful year for the Azul and the team looks forward to facing Maryland again at next year’s Region 1 Championship Tournament! Go Azul! | | | | |

State Champs after Stunning Win in Virginia Beach June 5, 2005
 | | Virginia Beach, VA - With the sun blazing high, the Azul won the Virginia State Cup in dramatic fashion with the kind of spectacular finish usually reserved for the movies. After defeating the McLean Courage, 2–0, in the semi-final match the day prior, the Azul faced the Loudoun Explosion for the Cup on June 5th. As the first whistle blew, it was clear the game would be close. Both sides threatened, but it wasn’t until the 36th minute, when a foul in the box gave Loudoun a penalty kick. Azul keeper, Marley, stood poised for the kick and made a valiant attempt to save the ball, but it sailed into the upper left corner, just out of reach. The Azul was down, 0-1. | | For the long 24 minutes that followed, the team rallied and attacked the Explosion goal, only to be kept at bay. With the game all but over, Loudoun’s fans started to celebrate what seemed like a sure win for their team. It looked like the Azul would have to wait until next year to take the Cup home. Then, suddenly, as if the writer of the day’s script decided to start anew, Azul forward, Liz, stole the ball from a Loudoun midfielder. She dribbled around one defender and between two more and took a shot that sliced past the keeper and into the net. | | | | Winning Moment for BRYC Azul The 2005 Virginia State Champions |
| | The game was tied with the second half practically over! The fans figured it would be settled in overtime. But then an astonishing turn-of-events! With 30 seconds left in stoppage, Azul sweeper, Elle, sent a direct kick soaring into Loudoun territory over the heads of its tallest defenders where able midfielder and team captain, Rachel, picked up the ball and with a quick cut, maneuvered away from the pursuing defenders. With speed and skill, she bent the ball around the goal keeper and found the far side of the net. G-O-O-O-O-O-A-L!!!! With 10 seconds to go the Azul took the lead, 2–1. And after one more kick off, the game was over. The Cup was won. Congratulations Azul! You did it! We are so proud of you! We know you will make the great state of Virginia proud as you represent us at the 2005 US Youth Soccer Region 1 Championship in July! Go Azul!! |
Champion Division ‘Silver’ Taken at FC Delco May 30, 2005
 | | Downingtown, PA - The Azul loaded up the minivans and SUVs for the Memorial Day weekend and journeyed to Eastern Pennsylvania to compete in the 2005 FC Delco Players Cup, Champion Division. | | | | The team advanced to the finals after tying PDA Tsunami 3–3, and beating the Dixie Dragons (Toronto) 5–1, Hershey Kick Kats 5–0, and the Twin County Crew 2–1. Up against the PASCO Thunderbolts in the finals, the Azul’s Rachel scored the first goal of the game with a solid shot to the left side of the net just before halftime. But PASCO answered with a goal off of a corner kick 10 minutes into the second half. Then, after a controversial Azul foul 20 yards from the goal in the final 2 minutes of regular play, PASCO fired a perfect direct kick to push the game beyond reach. After the game, at the medal ceremony, the Azul coaching team summed up the weekend best. “We had a good tournament, but not good enough! We’ve got some work to do this week! See you at practice!" |

Azul Finishes the WAGS Season on a High Note -- Division 1 Runner-Up May 22, 2005
 | | Severna Park, MD - The Azul got up early on Saturday morning and traveled to eastern Maryland for a an early morning game against the Severna Park Rage. The Azul took possession of the ball quickly, scoring their first goal in the 4th minute. Two more goals followed in the 16th and 31st minutes before the whistle marked halftime. Again, the Azul came out, possessed the ball, and scored in the 37th minute, followed by three more | | goals in the second half. Throughout the game, the Azul continually pushed the ball forward, from the quick tackles and long kicks of the Azul defenders to the Azul midfielders and forwards with their quick maneuvers and their tenacious assault on the goal. The game ended with a 7-0 win for the Azul. |
| Fairfax, VA - The Azul were happy to sleep-in and prepare for their afternoon game against the PWSI Courage ’92 Red, their final WAGS game of the season. The Azul came out strong knowing they would have a hard fought game ahead of them. The two teams battled it out with several attempts on the goal by the Azul. In the 18th minute, PWSI got away with the ball resulting in a speedy decision by Azul defenders to shut the play down. A foul was called in the Azul box giving PWSI a penalty kick at the Azul goal. | | | The Azul keeper stood her ground, looking confident and poised for the save. As the ball was launched into the air, the keeper swiftly batted it away and then stepped forward and grabbed the ball out of the air. The battle between the two teams continued. Finally, in the 31st minute the ball was crossed to an Azul forward who zig-zagged between two large PWSI defenders and launched the ball past the goalie and into the net. The halftime whistle followed not long after. | With half a game still left to play, it was still anybody’s game. The game raged on with the play becoming more physical as the game progressed, large volleys launched from feet and headers went back and forth. When the ball found the ground there were plenty of scrapping to win possession of the ball. The Azul kept up their attack. Their efforts finally paid-off in the 55th minute with a beautiful shot by the Azul’s right midfielder that sailed over the keeper's head and into the net. The Azul now led by two. Though PWSI made several strong attempts on goal, the Azul’s defense shut them out. The final score of the game was 2-0. The Azul finished their U12, Division 1, Spring WAGS season with 7 wins, 2 losses, and 0 ties (Impressive 29 Goals For and Only 5 Goals Against). Way to go Azul! |
Azul Plays Heart Out in Physical Game May 15, 2005
 | | Ashburn, VA - Coming off of the high from the prior day’s quarterfinal state cup victory, the BRYC Azul played an extremely physical game against the Loudoun Explosion, losing the game 2-1, in its 7th Washington Area Girls Soccer (WAGS) League game of the season. | | The Azul spent the first moments of the game adapting its playbook to the Explosion’s style of play, allowing its opponent to score two goals early in the game. Playing from behind and with steadfast alacrity, the Azul coaching team and players worked to identify and exploit weaknesses in the Loudon organization, preventing the much larger Loudoun players from making it close to the Azul net again. The Azul made it onto the scoreboard in the 43rd minute off of a direct kick that an aggressive offense ran into the goal. The Azul players had several very threatening scoring attempts throughout the second half, but were not able to convert their efforts into the necessary score. The Azul plays its final two WAGS League games next weekend against the Severna Park Rage and the PWSI Courage '92 RED. |
BRYC Azul Defeats PWSI Courage to Reach State Cup Final Four May 14, 2005
| Manassas, VA - The BRYC Azul advanced to the Virginia State Cup semi-finals round after notching their third win of the competition against the PWSI Courage ‘92 Red. On a Saturday afternoon in Bull Run Park with the noon-time sun beating down, the two teams met on the pitch, both determined to win this important single elimination match. The Azul came out fast and hard, playing a strong possession game. | | | | The Azul’s offense immediately went to work hammering away at the PWSI goal, finding the net in the 9th minute of the game and again in the 26th minute. The Azul continued its offensive assault in the second half with the Azul midfielders continually winning balls and successfully feeding them forward, resulting in another goal in the 34th minute. Throughout the game, the Azul’s defense remained solid, allowing only two shots in the first half that went wide and allowing no shots in the second half. When the dust had settled, the final score was 3-0. The Azul will face the MPS McLean Courage in their semi-final game. |

The Azul fell to the Premier, 0-1 in their first loss of the season. |
| On Sunday, the Azul played the MCSA Majestics at Pine Ridge Park. The two teams battled throughout the first half without a goal scored. The Azul came out aggressively in the second half and scored two early goals. The Majestics had their chance to score soon after, when an inadvertent handball in the box gave them a direct kick. With the game now, 2-1, the Azul quickly moved the ball up the field and found the net. The final score was 3-1. BRYC Azul Advances to State Cup Quarterfinals April 30, 2005
 | | Herndon, VA - The Azul clinched their second win of the Virginia State Cup tournament in a 2-1 victory over the Herndon Blaze. On a day when most games in the area were canceled, the two teams battled it out in driving rain and wind Saturday morning at Old Redskins Park. The Azul scored their first goal early, in the 3rd minute of the game and came back to score again in the 15th minute. The Azul maintained their 2-0 lead until the 42nd minute when a scrum near the goal put Herndon on the board. The Azul will play either PWSI Courage Red 92 or BAC Fusion, in the next round of Virginia State Cup competition. |
Azul Does It Again April 24, 2005
 | | Herndon, VA - On a damp cold day at Fox Mill District Park, the BRYC Azul faced the Chantilly Arsenal. Despite frozen rain and frigid temperatures, the Azul claimed their fourth victory of the WAGS 2005 Spring season in a decisive 5-0 win over the Arsenal. The Azul came up with a goal early in the first half and held on to the lead throughout. The defense held their line, allowing no shots on goal. In the second half, the Azul came out and quickly scored their second goal in the 37th minute. Three more goals followed in succession. The Arsenal fought hard throughout the match and was dangerously close to scoring in the final minutes of the game. However, their assault was thwarted when the keeper made a split-second decision to come out and challenge the attacker. All ended up in a heap with the ball temporarily cleared. Still in close range of the goal, the Arsenal took another shot that was once again deflected by the goalie. The Azul, now 4-0, will play the Severna Park Rage next Sunday in Severna Park, MD. |

BIG Weekend for AZUL April 17, 2005
 | | Annandale, VA - Azul came away with "big" wins early in the season by defeating two tough WAGS opponents. Kelley and Barbara were credited with assists. | | |
| On Sunday, this time at their own home turf, Azul was again tested by an extremely talented Baltimore BAYS 93 team. Azul responded well with two early goals in the first half. Rachel netted the goal in the seventh minute into the game with an assist coming from Barbara. In the twenty-second minute of the game, the ball found the back of the net resulting from a well-executed combo play by Meg and Isabel. In the semi-final game on Sunday (March 20th), BRYC Azul faced a very tough team from North Carolina, CASL 92 Spartan Elite (ranked #2 in NC, #7 in Region III) in order to advance to the final. The Azuls overcame a first half 1-0 deficit and tied the game at 1-1 with just a few minutes remaining in the second half. With two sudden-death OT halves, the score still remained even. CASL and BRYC Azul had to duke it out in the extremely tense PK shootout. In the end, the celebrations began on Azul's side when the 6th PK sliced past through the keeper to advance to the finals. In the championship match, BRYC Azul exhibited a great futball match against South Coast Scorpions (#1 in Massachusetts, #1 in Region I, #3 in the nation) but equally tough Scorpions came on top over Azuls by a golden goal in OT.
Congratulations Azul for your great courage and displaying exciting soccer throughout the tournament!! A credit goes to all the teams for providing extremely competitive and quality matches and also to the Richmond Striker Soccer Club for hosting a such fine tournament with fantastic fields in a beautiful weather. |
