Thoughts from Coach Bryan : Xtreme vs. Maumee
May 27, 2009 --
It is always hard to play against a team like Maumee. They have alot of skilled players. We overcame the adversity in the game and came out with a needed win. On a personal note, I have been coaching against Todd, the coach of Maumee, for years and have never beaten him in a game. We had signs of brilliance especially with Austin and his three goals in the game. Luke Skowronek added the winning goal on a beautiful shot that found the back of the net. We did have some intersting refereeing during the game that led to some excitement at times. I am glad that the boys and the parents maintained thier composure during the game. It is always nice to see good soccer turn into a good win. I also maintained my composure on the sidelines even though there were some questionable calls during the game.
Our record now is 5-1-2 with 12 points in the standings. We are tied for second place with two games left against the number 1 team. You can't ask for anything else as a coach. Go XTREME! Lets kick some Grass tonight at the game!

Thoughts from Coach Bryan: Xtreme Vs. GNAT the Remix of the Remix
May 26, 2009 --
Finally!!!!
I guess three times is a charm with this team. A great all around defensive game. We did have some control issues in the first half. I attribute this to the fact that we were playing uphill. Once we settled down at halftime and decided to stop playing kickball and actually pass to a teammate, we controlled the game from there. A hand ball in the box allowed an opportunity for Luke Skowronek to take a penalty kick with 10 minutes left in the game. He buried the ball in the goal to give us the 1-0 lead and we never looked back. Ryan Wicher and the defensive line, Alex Renius, Brandon Gamble and Nick Shermis maintained their shutout to give us the win. Travis Wagoner was also all over the place and kept the pace of the game going near the end of the game. Too many players stepped up today for me to mention them by name. A great game was played by all.
On a side note, 7 games into the season and we are 4-1-2. The biggest statistic that the boys can hang their hats on is our Goals against on the season. We have been scored on 4 times in 7 games. Couple that with a final in the tournament and I feel we are improving every game. Keep up the good work Boys! GO XTREME!

1. No Practice this Friday or Monday (Memorial Day) Too many going out of town to hold practice on these days.
2. We need to find a location for our team end of the season party. We can go somewhere with the kids or we can go to someones house, but I think the boys deserve a party and I am not sure if the club is going to have one.
3. Saturday, May 30th at 7:00, everyone is invited to come and watch Brendan's U-15 Celtics team take on the U-16 ESSL Arsenal. It is played at the Celtics home field behind the old Devilbis High School on Upton Avenue in Toledo. Come and enjoy some good physical soccer.

Xtreme vs. Findlay - Game 2
Thoughts from Coach Bryan:
A fine day for soccer on Sunday. Findlay is not a very strong team and I knew this based on our last game. The goal when you play a weaker team is to possess the ball and take advantage of the opportunitys when they arise. The boys played simple soccer and it paid off for them. The first goal came on a Penatly Kick taken by Jon Moreno. He blew the ball by the keeper to give us a 1-0 lead early on in the game. The second goal came on a misfired cross from Austin Jagodzinski that somehow ended up in the back of the net. The third goal came off of a corner kick. It is always great to see the boys score on a set piece. Holden Tincher put in the ball to give us a 3-0 lead. At the half, it was decided to put our goalie, Ryan Wicher, out in the field and to get him to score at all costs. Ryan missed a few opportunities but ended up blasting one by the goalie to give us a 4-0 lead. I then took the opportunity to move players around to give them a taste of different positions. Overall a great effort by the boys and a well deserved win.

Xtreme Vs. Findlay
Thoughts from Coach Bryan on the game:
Well, I can blame this one on me. I tend to get too involved when we play against the Rockets. The good news is that we have been beaten by this team in the past by multiple goals and this time we only lost by one. We did have our opportunitys but failed to capitalize on them. We had a 1 - 0 lead going into the second half on a run from Austin that resulted in a goal. We did lose our shape and will to play in the second half and ended up losing 2-1 when the final whistle blew. I am very proud that our first loss of the season came in our 5th game. Great job Boys and Keep up the good work. On a different note, Alex McCrory was the only one on the team that had the guts to ask Maddie Woolford for her number. I am just glad that he waited until after the game.

In Need of a President
Team,
It is with sadness that I am letting you know Tim Purcell, Our beloved President of Bedford United Soccer Club, has stepped down. He is doing this for personal reasons and we respect his decision. I am writing this because we are in need of an interim president to preside until November when we have elections. It would be great if one of you could step up and take on this responsibility. A fresh perspective is always welcome. Please give this some thought and let me know if you are interested.

Xtreme Vs. Liberty Benton
Thoughts from Coach Bryan:
Two in a row. As a coach, the continuation of an undefeated season is nice to see. We have had two frustrating 1-1 ties in the last two games. Some of the reasons for this is the fact that we are losing our shape in the midfield and attacking the center of their defense instead of attacking the outsides. We did have another brilliant goal by Justin Lobb that seemed to defy gravity as he leapt over the goalie to strike the ball into the net. We did have another defensive breakdown to allow a goal in the second half. Hopefully the boys will continue to work on Simple Soccer and we will see this in our future games. Great Job Xtreme.

Xtreme Vs. GNAT
Thoughts from Coach Bryan:
Ah the frustration of a 1-1 tie. As a coach, it pains me to see us tie a game that we controlled most of the time. To see a team play dump and run and score on a shot from way out contradicts everything soccer stands for. There is some difficulty with the amount of players on the team getting everyone in a rhythm on the field at the same time. Our play last night was not very simple. Simple soccer wins. We need to focus on the easy pass and the easy control. The kids have heard me say play the way you are facing alot this year. This needs to happen more and more as we progress through the year. The kids have also heard me say "First touch means everything." Our first touch needs alot of work. We chose, last night, to try and dribble up the middle which caused us to lose the ball most of the time. It was great to see Jon Moreno find the back of the net with a great shot during the first 15 minutes of the second half. We could have exploited the sidelines more than we did. I am not upset with our kids play, don't get me wrong. I just feel that we could potentially play better against GNAT and expect to when we play them at their field.

Tournament Recap by Coach Bryan
May 4, 2009 --
What a weekend! Our expectation as a team is to get better with every game. I feel that this weekend we did that. I am very proud of all of the boys and how they handled themselves on and off the field this weekend. Here is the synopsis of the games through my eyes.
The game at 8:00 am on Saturday morning proved to be versus a very good tactically trained Michigan Elite team. The team plays out of Troy, Michigan and plays in the MYSA Premier league. They took a 1-0 lead early on and sustained that until the last 5 minutes of the game when Jon Moreno poked one it to tie the game. The most important time in a soccer game is the time directly after a score. The other team took advantage of this and walked through our defense to score with three minutes left in the game. This could not be overcome and we lost a heartbreaker 2-1. Overall, the play showed a great effort by all of the boys.
The game at 12:00 pm on Saturday was a good display of discipline on the field by the boys. We possessed the ball at least 70% of the time with great passing both forward and backward and did not allow many shots on goal. The resulting win was 2-0 with both goals being scored by Jon Moreno. One of them was off a header that was sent from the right sideline by Alex Renius. A defining moment in the game was a beautiful bicycle kick by Raju Risley. It was unfortunate that it was not on frame but was very intimidating to the other team. Ryan Wicher got his first shut out of the tournament with the help of the Defense showing great patience and control. The boys also overcame adversity from the opposing coaches coaching style and its transition into his boys play on the field. I am proud of the way our boys did not stoop to the level of the other team and played without any attitudes or loss of personal fortitude on the field. This win resulted in 3 points in the standings.
The game at 8:00 am on Sunday was against GNAT. This team is a local team and is in our division and league. The game was played to a 1-1 tie. We possessed the ball around 65% of the time but did start to stoop to the level of the opposing team near the end of the first half. GNAT has a tendency to “Dump and Run” over the top. This style of long ball is not the style of play that I coach. A controlled game is more productive as the boys will grow in their soccer careers specifically in high school and college. We did have one mental breakdown defensively that resulted in a goal for the other team. The one goal that we did have was a brilliant unassisted run by Justin Lobb. I look forward to our division games with this team. This tie resulted in 1 point in the standings.
The game at 2:40 pm on Sunday was against the Taylor Michigan Stingrays. This team also plays in the MYSA premier league. This game was a must win game for us in order to advance to the championship game. The boys played brilliantly defensively. We controlled the midfield and did not allow very many shots on goal. With 15 minutes left in the game, Craig Lockhart ripped a shot from around 18 yards out that seemed to have enough power to break the net. The goalie from the opposing team did not even move. It was one of the hardest shots that I have seen and resulted in the game winner. We maintained our composure after the score and Ryan Wicher achieved his second shutout of the tournament with our 1-0 win. This game resulted in 3 points and got us into the championship versus The Michigan Elite.
WE MADE IT TO THE FINALS. We got the unique opportunity to try and get revenge on the one team that beat us in the tournament. The game was going to be difficult because the boys were extremely tired especially after climbing that hill. Around 10 minutes into the game, Jon Moreno was taken down in the box and a Penalty Kick was awarded. Jon blew the ball by the goalie to give us a 1-0 lead. This seemed to light a fire under the Michigan Elite as they marched in and put in two controversial goals. Ryan Wicher seemed to have possession of the ball at some time during the scrums that resulted in the two scores. The first half resulted in a 2-1 margin. We came out in the second half and appeared to have the momentum shift in our direction. We just couldn’t find the back of the net. We played them 0-0 in the second half for a loss in the finals.
All in all it was a great tournament. The boys all did very well and showed great skill. The coaches of the Taylor Stingrays and the Michigan Elite were very impressed with our skill and were questioning why we didn’t play in the MYSA Premier League. It is a great compliment for the boys and they should be proud. They handled themselves with dignity and respect this weekend and that is all we can ask of them. I am very honored to be their coach and look forward to a great season.

Our Tournament Schedule has been published.
We are in the Red Division and play against 4 other teams. That is 2 games on Saturday and 2 games on Sunday. The good news is that our last game on Saturday is at Noon. The bad news is that our first game on both Saturday and Sunday is at 8:00 am. This means that the boys will need to go to bed early on Friday and Saturday night. I am sure that they won't complain too much :) We will be playing some good competition from the downriver area of Detroit. It should be a great tournament.

Taking home win 2!
On Saturday, April 25, the XTREME brought home win number 2 against Liberty Benton. Here's what Coach Bryan had to say about the game:
"The game on Saturday was complicated due to the windy conditions. It took some time for the team to adjust to the pace of the ball due to the wind. This was apparent due to the 0-0 tie at the half. The first half was spent with the wind at our backs and most of the time we were chasing the ball. Once the wind was in our face, we settled in and controlled the ball with passing. There were signs of brilliance on the field that culminated in a great switch of the field to free up Luke Skowronek on the left sideline. He crossed a low ball that went through a couple of players only to be directed into the back of the net by Travis Wagoner. Once that score happened, we tightened up our defensive play and kept most of the game played in the midfield. The resulting 1-0 win was great considering the conditions."
Way to go boys!
