16U White Finishes 7th at the USSSA World Series
The Montgomery Mavericks 16U White team wrapped up a successful 2012 season with a 7th place finish at the USSSA World Series in Salisbury, Maryland.

The Mavericks started off the 2 game pool play with a game against the CFR Squeeze. The Mavericks jumped out to an early lead and then put the game away late on its way to a 11-3 victory. The second game on a hot, humid Thursday was against the Emmorton Thunder. This game was tight throughout with the score 1-1 in the 5th inning. A late surge by the Mavericks in the 6th and 7th inning guided them to a 7-1 win. Their 2-0 record left the girls as the 2nd seed heading into Friday's double elimination part of the tournament.

The first double elimination game was against the North Carroll Hot Shots. The Hot Shots broke open a scoreless game with 4 runs in the 4th inning. The Mavericks tried to fight back with 2 of their own in the 5th but the Hot Shots had the answers and won the game 8-3. The Mavericks now faced elimination with their next loss as they continued play on an overcast rainy Saturday.

The first game on Saturday was against a familar opponent, the Levittown Bulldogs. The Bulldogs came out strong with a run in the first for a 1-0 lead. The Mavericks managed to tie the game 1-1 and the score stayed that way until the 5th when a key 2 out single made the score 3-1 and the girls hung on for a 4-2 victory. Next up was the Bowie Blue Jays. The Mavericks came out smoking with 7 runs in the first inning and never looked back on the way to a 11-1 win. The third game of the day was against the Elite Red team. The Elite jumped out to an early 1-0 and then put up 5 runs in the 4th for a 6-1 lead. The Mavericks battled back to make the score 6-4 and thanks to some unbelievable outfield play the Elite held on for a 6-4 win ending the World Series for the girls.

The girls ended the World Series with a 4-2 record and finished the season with a 22-14 record including a tournament win in Sparta and a co-championship in Easton. Congratulations to the girls on a great World Series and a great season!!
16U White Mavericks Finish 3rd at NJ USSSA "B" Championships
The Montgomery Mavericks 16U White Team made the long trip to West Deptford Park worth it as they finished 3rd at the NJ USSSA "B" Championships this past weekend.

The girls started pool play on Saturday with an early 8am game against the South Jersey Bandits. After jumping out to a 6-0 lead the girls had to weather a late Bandit rally before holding on for a 6-3 victory. With temperatures quickly rising on this hot day, next up was the NJ Insanity Black team. Once again, the girls got off to a quick start and ran out to a 5-0 lead. This time the rally by the opponent got even closer as the Insanity got within one run but the Mavericks held on for a 5-4 victory. With the afternoon temperature over 100 degrees, the girls finished Saturday with a game against the South Brunswick Vikings. This time it was the Vikings jumping out to a big early lead and a late rally by the girls falling short as the Vikings took the win by a a score of 8-4. Their 2-1 record for the day made the girls the 5th seed out of 12 teams for Sunday's single elimination play.

As chance would have it, the Mavericks started Sunday's play with an 8am game against the South Jersey Bandits. This time the Bandits were much tougher and the Mavericks scratched and clawed to a 3-0 lead after 4 innings. The Bandits fought back to cut the deficit to 3-2 and had bases loaded and no outs in the 7th inning but couldn't get the tying run across home plate and the Mavericks held on for a 3-2 victory. Next up was another familiar opponent, the 4th seeded South Brunswick Vikings. This game started the same as Saturday's game with the Vikings getting out to a 5-0 lead. However, a big 2 out single in the 4th inning cut the lead to 5-3 and the Mavericks added 3 more runs in the 6th to win the game 6-5. This win earned the girls a semi-final matchup with the East Coast Tsunami. The rigor of 5 games in the hot weather clearly had taken its toll on the girls as the much fresher Tsunami team scored 5 runs in the first inning on their way to a 13-0 win.

Despite the way Sunday ended it was a great weekend of softball for the girls as they continue to get ready for the trip to the USSSA World Series in Salisbury, Maryland in 10 days!!!
