Mandatory Meeting, No Nationals Game and Other Notes
June 1, 2007 --
All returning players should meet at the silver box at 2:20 on Wednesday, June 6 so we can bring the equipment up to the school. If everyone shows up on time it should only take us 30 minutes. Please be at the silver box at 2:20. Help spread the word. Seniors from this year's team do not have to attend, but, of course, we will gladly accept your help.
Because only eight players expressed an interest in the Nationals game, there will be no trip to the game on June 5. Money turned in will be returned on Monday...There is no team party at Hard Times this year...Decisions regarding the summer league team and all questions regarding the summer league team need to be directed to the summer coaches. MPSSAA rules prohibit the NWHS coaches from being involved with the summer team...Varsity players can pick up stat packages from Room 102 on Wednesday morning...Have a great summer...

Jaguars Lose Heartbreaker in Bottom of 7th
May 16, 2007 --
Northwest battled back from a 5-1 defecit but lost on a home run in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Jaguars fell at Wootton 7-6 in the 4A West regional semi-finals. NWHS finishes its season with an 11-8 mark.
The Jaguars jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Playing around three weather delays, senior Peter Marratto doubled to left then moved to third on a wild pitch. Senion Jon Brauch than lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to score Marratto.
Wootton scored five times in the bottom of the second to take what appeared to be a commanding lead. Junior Spencer Pearman came on in relief in the second inning to stop the Patriots. Northwest bounced right back, however, in the top of the third inning, scoring four times to tie the game. With one out, senior Garrett Hudler singled to left. After Pearman blasted a fly ball to deep center for the second out, Marratto singled to put Jaguars on first and second with two outs. Brauch then reached on an error to load the bases. Senior Charlie Cononie continued his hot May with a double to center that drove in Hudler and Marratto. The Wootton outfielder misplayed the ball allowing Brauch to score from first and Cononie to move around to third. Senior Zeke Vazquez then singled up the middle to score Cononie to tie the score at 5-5.
The Patriots regained the lead with a solo home run in the sixth inning, but Northwest battled right back in the top of the seventh. With one out, Cononie singled to right-center, then moved around to third on a single by Vazquez. Sophomore John Krahling, who threw out three would-be base stealers from his catchers position during the game, singled to right to drive in Cononie and tie the game.
Unfortunatley for the second straight year, Wootton knocked off the Jaguars with a walk off home run. This year senior Peter Barrett for Wootton barely cleared the center field fence and Hudler's outstretched arm and glove for the game-winning run. After scaling the fence and nearly bringing the home run ball back into the park for an out, Hudler cut his arm in two places when he came down on the fence. The great effort by the senior was one of just many highlights during one of the most exciting and dramatic games in NWHS history.
Wootton moves on to host Quince Orchard on Friday. The Cougars nipped Gaithersburg 1-0 on Thursday after being rained out on Wednesday.
Thanks Garrett, Jon, Mark, Peter, Charlie, J.T., Zeke, and Michael. You were terrific representatives of the program. We will always remember your contributions, and more importantly, your spirit and friendship.

Jaguars Get Three in Ninth to Top Whitman 7-5
May 14, 2007 --
Northwest fended off two Whitman rallies and scored three times in the top of the ninth inning and held on to beat the third-seeded Vikings 7-5 in the 4A West quarterfinals at Whitman. The win pushes the Jaguars record to 11-7 on the season. Northwest will next be in action on Wednesday in the region semi-finals at Wootton at 4:00. The Patriots were 10-5 winners over visiting Richard Montgomery this afternoon.
The Jaguars managed to get out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Junior Spencer Pearman singled to lead off the game and was sacrificed to second by senior Peter Marratto. Then with two outs, senior Charlie Cononie doubled home Pearman with what would prove to be the first of Cononie's three hits.
Whitman took the lead with single runs in the fourth and fifth inning before NWHS jumped back in front in the sixth. Marratto led off the frame with a double to right center, then senior Jon Brauch reached on an infield single. Cononie then smacked his second double of the game, driving in Marratto and chasing Brauch around to third. Senior Zeke Vazquez then singled to right to plate Brauch and move Cononie to third. Sophomore John Krahling then lifted a fly ball to deep center to sacrifice home Cononie and give the Jaguars a 4-2 lead.
The lead was short-lived, however, as Whitman tallied twice in the home half of the sixth to tie the score. Finally in the ninth inning with two outs, the Jaguars were able to score the decisive runs. Pearman doubled to left-center, then scored on Marratto's seeing-eye double that landed among three Vikings in center field. Brauch then singled home Marratto, went to second on the throw to the plate, then moved to third when the catcher threw the ball away trying to make a play on Brauch moving up on the throw. After Cononie was intentionally walked, Brauch scored the insurance run when Vazquez reached on a Whitman error.
Brauch, who came on to pitch with on on and nobody out in the seventh, quickly retired the first two batters he faced in the bottom of the ninth. The Vikings then got a man aboard on a Jaguars error and that runner came in to score when the next batter doubled. Then with a full count and two outs on the next batter, Northwest picked off the Whitman runner at second base when Marratto slid in behind him and took the perfect throw from Brauch and applied the tag for the final out of the game. Brauch did not allow an earned run in three innings and struck out four in picking up the win.
In the other half of the 4A West draw, Gaithersburg upset top-seeded Damascus 7-5 and Quince Orchard held off visiting Magruder 10-9. The Trojans and Cougars will meet at Quince Orchard on Wednesday in the other semi-final contest in the region. In other games of note in the 4A playoffs, Sherwood, the top seed in the North, knocked off visiting Thomas Johnson 7-1. The top seed in the East did not fare as well as Thomas Stone shocked defending state champion Arundel 1-0.

Jaguars Close Out Regular Season with 11-1 Win over Clarksburg
May 9, 2007 --
Junior Spencer Pearman had three hits, scored a pair of runs and drove in two runs and senior Jon Brauch had two doubles and four RBI's as Northwest defeated visiting Clarksburg 11-1 in five innings. The Jaguars finished the regular season 9-7 and have won three straight games for the second time this year. Sophomore Steve Callahan pitched the final four innings to pick up the victory.
The Jaguars got on the board first in the home half of the third inning. Senior Michael Giacalone walked to start the frame and then stole second. Pearman then flared a double to shallow left to move Giacalone to third. After senior Peter Marratto was hit by the pitch to load the bases, Brauch ripped the first of his two doubles down the left field line. Giacalone and Pearman scored on the hit and Marratto was waved home when the left fielder bobbled the ball. Brauch then moved to third on junior John Krahling's ground out and scored on senior Zeke Vazquez's sacrifice fly to center to make it 4-0.
The Jaguars put together a two-out rally in the fourth inning. Giacalone drew another walk and again stole second. He came in to score on Pearman's single up the middle. Pearman stole second, Marratto walked, and both moved up ninety more feet on steals to put runners and second and third. Brauch then drove them both in with his second double of the day to go up 7-1.
The final four runs came in the fifth inning. Vazquez walked to start the inning, stole second, then scored on senior Charlie Cononie's second double of the day. Junior Nick Marshall walked and was replaced by senior Garrett Hudler, who re-entered the game. Cononie and Huddler each moved up ninety feet with a stolen base, then senior J.T. Sutton singled to center to drive in both runners. Sutton moved to second on a balk and two batters later scored the game's final run when Pearman singled to center field.
Brauch pitched the first inning for Northwest as a tune up for his start Friday and retired all three batters he faced. Callahan, back up from the JV, needed just 44 pitches to work the final four innings, allowing just one run on four hits.
Prior to the game the eight seniors and their parents were honored in a pregame ceremony. Thanks to Bethesda Florist for the lovely flowers for the mothers, to assistant principal Tim Britton for attending the ceremony, and to JV coach Todd Varesco for handling the announcing duties.
Northwest opens 4A West Region playoff action Friday at home against Watkins Mill at 4:00. Admission for all playoff games is $5.00 for all fans seven years of age and older.

May 7, 2007 --
It was either one run or three runs in each inning for Northwest as the Jaguars scored in each frame and defeated visiting Kennedy 12-2 in six innings. Northwest improves to 8-7 overall and awaits the results of Tuesday morning's state playoff draw.
The Jaguars scored in the first on the benefit of four walks to lead 1-0 after one. After the Cavaliers scored their final run in the top of the fourth, the Jaguars sent three men home in the bottom of the inning to put Northwest up 8-2. Senior Jon Brauch singled and stole second. Junior John Krahling then singled home Brauch. Sophomore Steve Callahan came in to run for Krahling and moved to second when Vazquez reached on a Kennedy error. Senior Charlie Cononie then drew a walk to load the bases. Giacalone hit a grounder to third that forced Callahan at the plate. Then two batters later, Sutton continued where he left off at Watkins Mill by singling home two runs with a shot to right.
The men in black scored three more times in the fifth. After Marratto reached on an infield single and Brauch and Vazquez walked, freshman Nick Karis, in his first varsity at bat, doubled and cleared the bases to make the score 11-2. The game-winning run scored with no outs in the sixth. Junior Geoff Zgorski drew a lead off walk and Sutton also walked. Pearman then hit a sharp single to center to score Zgorski and end the game.

Groundhog Day...
April 28, 2007 --
Senior Charlie Cononie's excellent pitching performance against the county's highest scoring team was wasted by another abysmal effort at the plate and by the infield defense at Northwest was shutout for the second straight game, this time by home-standing Damascus, 11-0 in six innings. The loss was the third straight for the Jaguars and drops their overall record to 6-7. NWHS finished divisional play with a 3-4 record.
Cononie worked five innings and gave up only one earned run. Jaguars infielders committed five errors in his five innings of work. The bats were quiet again as well, as Northwest could muster only four singles against Damascus, one each by senior Jon Brauch, Cononie, senior Garrett Hudler, and freshman Chris Rados, who was promoted to the varsity prior to the game.
Northwest has a bye on Tuesday and will try to snap its losing streak on Thursday at winless Watkins Mill. Both the JV and varsity will visit the Wolverines, with the varsity game starting at 3:00 and the JV to follow at 5:15. The JV also lost to Damascus, suffering a 15-5 setback at home.

Quince Orchard Outscores Jaguars 13-7
April 24, 2007 --
Costly mistakes by Northwest and timely hitting by visiting Quince Orchard in the fifth inning led to a 13-7 Quince Orchard victory. The loss drops the Jaguars to 6-5 overall and 3-2 in division play. The loss also eliminates Northwest from division title contention.
Costly errors in the first and second inning put the Cougars up 3-0 after an inning and a half. The Jaguars got on the board in the home half of the first when junior John Krahling led off the inning with a single to center, senior Zeke Vazquez followed with a single to right, and junior Nick Marshall singled to left to drive in Krahling's courtesy runner, junior Bobby Murphy. Junior Geoff Zgorski continued the inning with a perfect bunt single down the third base line. Northwest managed to only get Vazquez across on junior Spencer Pearman's one-out ground out and the inning ended with the Jaguars down 3-2.
Northwest tied the game in the third. Senior Jon Brauch, who had three hits on the day, was hit by the pitch and then moved all the way to third on a wild pick off throw. He came in to score on senior Charlie Cononie's single to left. Quince Orchard pulled ahead 4-3 in the fourth on a one out walk, a double, and a ground out.
Like Saturday at Richard Montgomery, the opposition was again able to put up a big number as Quince Orchard scored seven times in the fifth inning. Unlike Saturday, however, the big inning cost Northwest. The Cougars sent 11 men to the plate, pounded out five hits, and benefited from two walks and two Northwest errors.
The Jags were able to cut the defecit to 11-7 in the sixth. Marshall drew a lead off walk, then with two outs, Pearman reached on an infield single, and senior Peter Marratto was hit by the pitch to load the bases. Brauch then ripped a double to center to plate Marshall and Pearman, and Marratto came in to score when the centerfielder misplayed the ball. Brauch then scored on Cononie's second RBI hit of the day.
Quince Orchard tacked on two runs in the seventh for the final tally of 13-7. The loss, combined with Sherwood's 13-3 win over Damascus in five innings, eliminates Northwest from division title contention.
The JV did not fare well either, blowing a 7-1 and losing to Quince Orchard 8-7. Both teams return to action on Thursday with games against Blake. The varsity plays at home at 3:30 and the JV plays a rare JV night game at Blake at 7:00.

April 21, 2007 --
After blowing a 4-1 lead, Northwest rallied for four runs in the top of the seventh inning to defeat Ricahrd Montgomery 8-5 at Mongtomery College-Rockville. The Jaguars improved to 6-4 on the season and 3-1 in division play.
The Jaguars jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Junior Spencer Pearman led off the inning being hit by the pitch and then stole second base. Senior Peter Marratto reached on a bloop double to left to put runners at second and third. Senior Jon Brauch then singled to the deep hole at short driving in Pearman.

Northwest would send ten men to the plate in the seventh, however, and scored four times to re-take the lead. Marratto reached on an infield single to start the frame then moved to second on an errant pick off throw from the catcher. Brauch laced a double to drive in Marratto and the comeback was on. With one out Krahling reached on a single to right that drove in Brauch, then senior Zeke Vazquez doubled to right to drive in senior courtesy runner T.J. Callahan. Junior Nick Marshall walked to put runners at first and second, then with two outs senior Garrett Hudler singled to drive in Vazquez for the eighth Jaguars run.
Senior Mark Macauly started his first game of the year and worked five strong innings before tiring in the sixth. Brauch came on to work two scoreless innings in relief to pick up the win, striking out four in the process.
The JV rallied from a 10-2 defecit to beat visiting Richard Montgomery 15-12 on Saturday morning. The JV is now 5-2 on the season. Both teams host Quince Orchard on Tuesday with the varsity starting at 3:00 and the JV at 5:15.

Cononie Shuts Down Colonels
April 19, 2007 --
Senior Charlie Cononie recorded his second complete game shut out of the season as Northwest nipped visiting Magruder 1-0. The Jaguars are now 5-4 overall and 2-1 in division play.
Conoinie allowed only four hits in the game and walked only one batter until the sixth inning. The defense was flawless, playing its second error-free game of the season.
The only run of the game scored in the home half of the first inning. Junior Spencer Pearman led off the frame with a single to right and moved to second on a Magruder error. Senior Peter Marratto smashed a line shot to third for the first out, but the second baseman could not handle the throw from third when Magruder tried to double off Pearman and Pearman moved up to third on the error. The Northwest centerfielder then scored on senior Jon Brauch's hard hit double to the left-center gap. Brauch finished the day two for three with an RBI. Cononie and senior Garrett Hudler recorded the only other two hits for the Jaguars.
Cononie wiggled out of trouble in the sixth and seventh innings. The Jaguars got the final out of the sixth at the plate when the Colonel runner at third tried to score on a pitch in the dirt. Sophomore catcher John Krahling's throw to Cononie covering the plate easily beat the runner to end the inning. In the seventh with the bases loaded and one out Cononie recorded the last two outs on a fielder's choice at the plate off a grounder to the mound and then on a ground out to third.
The day was not as kind to the JV as the Jag Cubs lost to Magruder 10-3 to fall to 4-2 on the season. Both teams return to action against Richard Montgomery on Saturday. The JV is at home at 10 AM and the varsity takes on the upstart Rockets, fresh off of a 7-6 win in nine innings over Quince Orchard, at 1:30 at Montgomery College Rockville.
Reminder: The Boosters Club Mulch Sale is Saturday from 8 AM until dark. Players are expected to work at the Mulch Sale following their games. The Boosters provide food and drinks and community service hours are available.

Bats Come to Life in 17-3 Win at Springbrook
April 13, 2007 --
Northwest scored runs in six of seven innings and pounded out 16 hits in beating home-standing Springbrook 17-3. The win improves the Jaguars record to 4-3 and 1-0 in the MCPS 4A East Division. Senior Charlie Cononie worked six innings, allowing just one earned run, three hits, and struck out ten in picking up his second win of the season.
NWHS had three big innings, scoring four times in both the second and fourth innings and five more times in the seventh. Junior Spencer Pearman moved into the leadoff spot and went three for four with two walks, four runs, an RBI and two steals. Junior Nick Marshall, starting for the first time this season, went two for four with two walks, three runs, and an RBI. One of his two hits was an RBI triple in the second.
Senior Jon Bracuh went one for three with three RBI's and two runs and Cononie helped his own cause going four for four with two runs and four RBI's and was also hit by a pitch. Senior Peter Marratto, one day after his 18th birthday, smacked two triples in going three for five with two runs and four driven in.
Perhaps the most impressive offensive display was a total team effort in the fourth inning when the Jags successfully executed five hit-and-run plays to blow open the game. Pearman, Marshall, Brauch and Cononie had consecutive singles, and sophomore John Krahling would have had an RBI on what should have been a sacrifice fly if it weren't for bone-head third base coaching. Marratto then followed with another successful hit and run. Junior Bobby Murphy was next but flied to right to hit into a double play, but not before Cononie scored from third before the second out was made.
Senior Mark Macauley, now recovered from a three week battle with a virus to start the season, pitched a scoreless seventh inning for Northwest. The Jaguars return to action when they begin divisional play on Tuesday at home against Sherwood at 3:30. The JV returns to the field tomorrow morning at home against Springbrook at 10 AM.

Wootton Pound Jags 13-7
April 11, 2007 --
Visiting Wootton scored 13 runs on 15 hits and benefited from 6 Northwest walks en route to a 13-7 win at Northwest. The loss drops the Jaguars record to 3-3 on the season. The Jaguars could only muster five hits of their own and failed to capitalize on several scoring chances. Northwest did rally from an 8-1 defecit to close the gap to 8-7, but Wootton proceeded to score four times in the sixth to take control of the game.
The JV game was stopped in the sixth innning due to darkness with the score tied at 3-3. The JV will continue a suspended game at Gaithersburg tomorrow at 4:00. The varsity returns to action Friday at Springbrook at 3:30.

MCPS Revises County Baseball Schedule
March 30, 2007 --
The Montgomery County Public School system's coordinator of athletics has revised the 2007 varsity and JV baseball schedules. Changes go into effect after Spring Break. These changes were necessitated due to the inablility of the Metropolitan Baseball Umpires Association (MBUA)to provide at least two umpires for every scheduled varsity game and one umpire for every JV game.
Typically the MCPS baseball schedule has the varsity and JV play the same school on the same day at opposite sites. The revisions have moved many JV games to the same site as the varsity game with the varsity games moving from 3:30 to 3:00 and the JV games starting immediately after the varsity games.
New Northwest baseball schedules will be distibuted when the students return from Spring Break. Here is the revised schedule (which will be updated under the Schedules link this weekend)for Northwest.
The JV will still play the completion of its suspended game with Gaithersburg at Gaithersburg at 4:00 on Tuesday, April 10. The Jaguars lead the game 1-0 after the top of the first.
Wednesday, April 11: Wootton visits Northwest with the varsity game at 3:00 and the JV game to follow at 5:15.
Friday, April 13 and Saturday, April 14: The varsity game with Springbrook remains AN AWAY game on April 13 at 3:30, but the JV game is moved to April 14 at NORTHWEST at 10:00.
Tuesday, April 17: The schedule with Sherwood remains the same. The varsity plays at home at 3:30 and the JV plays at Sherwood at 3:30.
Thursday, April 19: Magruder visits Northwest with the varsity game at 3:00 and the JV game to follow at 5:15.
Saturday, April 21: The schedule with Richard Montgomery remains the same. The JV plays at home at 10:00 and the varsity plays at Montgomery College-Rockville at 1:30.
Tuesday, April 24: Quince Orchard visits Northwest with the varsity game at 3:00 and the JV game to follow at 5:15.
Thursday, April 26: Only the JV game time is changed. The varsity hosts Blake at 3:30 and the JV plays at Blake at 7:00 instead of 6:00.
Saturday, April 28: The schedule with Damascus remains the same. The JV plays at home at 10:00 and the varsity is away at 1:30.
Thursday, May 3: Northwest visits Watkins Mill with the varsity game at 3:00 and the JV game to follow at 5:15.
Saturday, May 5: The schedule remains the same. The JV wraps up its season with a 1:30 game at Kennedy and the varsity will practice.
Monday, May 7: The varsity game at home against Kennedy remains a 5:15 start due to AP testing.
Wednesday, May 9: The varsity game at home against Clarksburg remains a 5:15 start due to AP testing.
We understand that this means we must adjust transportation schedules for the JV. We wanted to get the word out about the schedule as soon as possible so families could make adjustments to their calendars. If you have any questions, please email the coaches at NWHSBaseball@aol.com.

Jags Win Weird One Over Wheaton
March 29, 2007 --
It certainly was a strange game, but in the end the Jaguars won their third straight game knocking off host Wheaton 18-3 in six innings. NWHS improves to 3-2 heading into Spring Break.
The Northwest bats were silent for the first four innings as the Jaguars could not muster a hit and fell behind 1-0. Everything changed, however in the fifth inning. Junior Bobby Murphy led off with a walk and stole second base. With one out, junior Geoff Zgorski laid down a sacrifice bunt that the Knights defense threw away allowing Murphy to score to tie the game. Zgorski moved to second on a wild pitch, then senior Garrett Hudler reached on a walk. Senior Peter Marratto then reached on an error by the Wheaton second baseman and Zgorski scored to give the Jaguars a 2-1 advantage. Junior Spencer Pearman drew the third of his five walks to load the bases. Senior Jon Brauch then smashed a shot to left center field for a grand slam to break open the game at 6-1.
Wheaton responded with two runs in the bottom of the fifth to cut the NWHS lead to 6-3. Then Northwest sent 17 men to the plate in a long sixth inning that resulted in 12 runs for the Jaguars. Wheaton pithers walked eight Norhtwest hitters and aslo hit a batter in the inning. Sophomore John Krahling stroked a bases loaded triple to left center and Marratto smashed a two-run triple of his own in the inning. Krahling finished the day going two for four with three RBI's.
Junior Tyler Stout worked four innings to pick up his first win as a Jaguar. He gave up only two hits and struck out six. Senior Mark Macauley came on in relief in with two outs in the fifth and picked a man off of first base then retired the side in order in the sixth for his first save of the year.
Notes...Pearman has walked in his last eight consecutive plate appearances...The Wheaton run in the fourth inning snapped a string of 20 straight scoreless innings for the NWHS pitching staff...In one of the most unbelievable stats ever, even though the Jaguars scored eight runs against Churchill yesterday, Northwest hitters were 0 for 11 with runners in scoring position...The Jaguars are now off until April 11 when they host Wootton.

Cononie Shuts Down Churchill
March 28, 2007 --
Senior Charlie Cononie needed just 88 pitches to pick up his first win of the season as Northwest shut out previously unbeaten Churchill 8-0 in Potomac. The Jaguars improved to 2-2 while the Bulldogs dropped to 2-1.
Cononie set the tempo for the afternoon with a six-pitch first inning. He allowed only four hits, struck out four, and walked only three. Several defensive gems were turned in as NWHS played its first errorless game of the year.
The Jaguars scored three times in the top of the first and followed with single runs in all but the sixth inning. Senior Peter Marratto led off the first with a double to center and moved to third on junior Spencer Pearman's ground out to the right side. Senior Jon Brauch then lifted a sacrifice fly to center to plate Marratto. Cononie followed with the first of his two singles, then senior Zeke Vazquez smashed his second home run of the season to make the score 3-0.
With one out in the second Marratto reached on an infield single, stole second, and scored when Brauch reached on a Churchill error. Vazquez walked to lead off the visiting half of the third and moved around to third when junior Bobby Murphy singled to left and the Churchill defense misplayed the ball allowing Murphy to also go to second. Vazquez then scored on sophomore John Krahling's ground out to short to make it 5-0.
With one out in the fourth Pearman drew the first of his three walks on the day, stole second and moved to third on a throwing error. He then scored when Brauch grounded out. The lone Jaguars run in the fifth also came from a walk, this time to Krahling. Senior courtesy runner Mike Giacalone was stealing when junior pinch hitter Nick Marshall singled to left. When the left fielder misplayed the ball Giacalone scored and Marshall scampered to second for a 7-0 lead.
After finally being held scoreless in the sixth, the Jags added their final run in the top of the seventh. Krahling doubled off the fence in left field. Senior pinch hitter J.T. Sutton then walked and he along with junior courtesy runner T.J. Callahan moved up ninety feet on senior Garrett Hudler's ground out. Marratto walked to load the bases, then Pearman walked for the third time in the game to force in Callahan from third.
The Jaguars have now gone 18 innings without allowing a run to even their record after losing their first two games. The final game before Spring Break takes place tomorrow at Wheaton at 3:30.
The NWHS JV improved to 3-0 with a 12-2 win over visiting Wheaton today. The squad returns to action on Tuesday, April 10 when it will complete the game with Gaithersburg that was suspended this past Tuesday with the Jaguars leading 1-0 after the top of the first. The game will resume at Gaithersburg at 4 PM.

Brauch Leads NWHS to First Win of Season
March 26, 2003 --
Senior Jon Brauch pitched eight scoreless innings and tripled in the game's only run in the bottom of the ninth as the Jaguars topped Gaithersburg 1-0 in nine innings at Northwest. The win for the Jaguars means that both NWHS and the Trojans stand at 1-2 on the young season.
Bruach allowed just three hits and struck out five in his second appearance of the year. He has now allowed just one earned run in 13 innings of work. Gaithersburg junior Kevin Brady worked seven scoreless, no-hit innings for the Trojans and has only allowed one hit in two starts for Gaithersburg.
Junior Bobby Murphy got the first Jaguars hit in the eighth inning, but was left stranded at second base. Only two batters came to the plate in the ninth for Northwest. Senior Zeke Vazquez was hit by the pitch to start the inning. Brauch then executed the hit and run to perfection, tripling into the right-centerfield gap to drive in Vazquez for the win.
Northwest almost got the winning run off of Brady in the bottom of the seventh. With one out Brauch was hit by the pitch then stole second. With two out junior Spencer Pearman was intentionally walked to put runners on first and second. Brauch was able to get a big jump on sophomore John Krahling's first pitch and stole second. Gaithersburg then allowed Pearman to steal second. With two strikes on Krahling, the Jaguars put on the suicide squeeze and Krahling almost got the bunt down, but it rolled foul up the first base line for strike three and the final out. "You would think the two-out, two-strike suicide would not work since the batter could simply be thrown out at first," stated Jaguars skipper Matt Noble. "The element of surprise, however, often works in the offenses favor. Most teams will try to make a play at the plate based on simple reaction, and against a great pitcher like Brady I thought it was worth the try."
Senior Mark Macauley picked up the win in relief, striking out two and working a scoreless ninth inning. The Jaguars have a practice day on Tuesday before playing on the road back-to-back days at Churchill on Wednesday and Wheaton on Thursday.
The JV baseball game at Gaithersburg was postponed until tomorrow because no umpires were available. Game time at Gaithersburg is 5:15.

Four Errors Sink Jaguars Against Poolesville
March 23, 2007 --
Four Jaguars errors and a lack of timely hitting helped Poolesville in route to a 7-3 victory at Northwest. Poolesville has now won three of the last four meetings with NWHS spanning the last three seasons. With the loss the Jaguars drop to an unexpected 0-2 on the young season.
After Poolesville went up 1-0 on an unearned run in the top of the first, senior Zeke Vazquez smashed a home run off of the right field foul pole in the home half of the second to tie the game. The Falcons then followed with two runs in the top of the third to re-take the lead with a lead off walk, a three base throwing error on a bunt and a timely hit.
The Jags tied the game again in the home half of the third. Senior Peter Marratto singled to center and stole second. Junior Spencer Pearman then lifted a hit to right center to drive in Marratto. Pearman then stole second and senior Jon Brauch reached on an infield single and stole second to put two men in scoring position. Senior Charlie Cononie smashed a single off of the pitcher's glove to tie the game.
Poolesville added a pair of runs in both the fourth and sixth innings for the final tally. NWHS was a paltry 4 for 13 with runners in scoring position, and the four hits led to only two runs.
The Jaguars face a busy week before Spring Break. On Monday Gaithersburg will visit NWHS, then the Jaguars travel to Churchill on Wednesday and Wheaton on Thursday. All games are at 3:30.
The JV Jags improved to 2-0 behind the stellar pitching of freshman Brandon Baker as they posted a 14-1 win in five innings at Poolesville.

Seneca Scores Three in 7th to Top Jaguars
March 21, 2007 --
Seneca Valley scored three times in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat Northwest 5-4 in the varsity opener for both teams. The loss marked the first time the Jaguars have lost to their Great Seneca Highway rivals in five years.
Senior Jon Brauch worked five strong innings, allowing just two runs on six hits. He allowed his only earned run in the bottom of the first as Seneca jumped on top 1-0. The Jaguars bounced right back with two runs of their own in the top of the second. With one out sophomore John Krahling smashed a single to left. Junior Geoff Zgorski came in as the courtsey runner, moved to second on a bad pick off throw, then scored when senior Zeke Vazquez tripled to the warning track in deep right. Vazquez was out at the plate trying to score on a grounder off the bat of senior J.T. Sutton, who then moved to third when senior Garrett Hudler doubled off of the fence in left. Senior Peter Marratto walked to load the bases, then junior Spencer Pearman walked to force in the go-ahead run.
Seneca tied the score with an unearned run in the third and the 2-2 tie stood until the seventh inning. Pearman led off the seventh with a walk and moved to second on Brauch's single to center. Senior Charlie Cononie's bouncer to second forced Brauch at second and moved Pearman to third. Junior Bobby Murphy, who had two hits on the day, grounded out to third to score Pearman and put Northwest up 3-2. Krahling then singled again to left to drive in Cononie with an insurance run and gave the Jags a 4-2 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh.
Then the wheels fell off the wagon. A leadoff walk to the nine man followed by a bloop hit, a strike out, and a walk loaded the bases. Another walk forced in a run to close the gap to 4-3, then a two-run single to left ended the game, driving in two to give the Screaming Eagles the 5-4 win.
Congratulations to the NWHS JV for scoring a run in the bottom of the 7th to nip Seneca Valley 2-1 in the JV opener for both teams. Both teams are back in action on Friday against Poolesville at 3:30. The varsity it home and the JV is away.

Busy Week Ahead
March 11, 2007 --
Several activities will take place during the upcoming week that everyone involved with NWHS baseball should know about. Three scrimmages are scheduled for both teams this week. On Monday the JV will travel to Whitman and the varsity will host the Vikings. Both will begin around 3:30. On Thursday the JV will travel to Sherwood and the varsity will host the Warriors, again with both starting around 3:30. The scrimmage schedule concludes on Saturday with the varsity hosting Springbrook and the JV traveling to Springbrook, both at 11 AM. JV parent drivers are needed for the scrimmages. If you are available to drive on Monday to Whitman, please email the coaches at NWHSBaseball@aol.com.
Each year baseball team memebers are required to purchase the baseball "kit." Information was sent home about the kit, which includes the game hat, an alternate game jersey that will have the player's name on it, two NWHS baseball t-shirts, and a pair of game socks. A check for $75 payable to Northwest High School should be turned in to one of the coaches on Monday or Tuesday.
Wednesday is Meet the Teams Night for spring sports. The activity begins at 7:00 in the auditorium. After a brief presentation in the auditorium, baseball parents and players will meet in a classroom. Calendars, phone lists, and schedules will be distributed at the meeting. The entire program should be over by 8:15. Players are expeceted to wear ties, dress pants, and dress shoes. Attendance for players is MANDATORY and is strongly encouraged for parents.
The team picture for both teams will be taken on Wednesday also. The pictures are scheduled to be taken on the field around 4:00. Players will practice in uniform that day. Information about the picture packages available was distributed to the players. While it is not a requirement to purchase a picture or picture pack, all players MUST appear in the team photo. Practice on Wednesday will be over at 5:00 to allow players time to go home, shower, eat, and return for Meet the Teams Night.
The annual Boosters Club mulch sale takes place next Saturday. We are asking players to work at the mulch sale since the Boosters do so much to help the program. We also plan on requesting funds for items from the Boosters in the very near future. Varsity players can work the sale from 8 AM until 10 AM and both teams can also work following the scrimmages. Players in community service hours for participating in the mulch sale.
Finally, the coaches are monitoring the players grades. Varsity grade sheets are due to the coaches on Monday and JV grade sheets on Tuesday. Players with a C or lower in classes will be asked to seek additional help from the class from a teammate as well as their teachers. Reports of unacceptable behavior in class will not be tolerated and will be dealt with by the coaches on an individual basis.

Season Nine Kicks Off
March 1, 2007 --
44 players worked out on the blacktop, in the batting cages, and in the back gym as the Northwest Jaguars opened their ninth season of baseball today. Over 20 players return from last year's varsity and JV squads, and along with the infusion of new talent will make for one of the most competitve tryouts in the school's brief history.
The large snowfall this past Sunday has the playing field saturated, and the forecast for more rain this evening and on Friday may keep the Jaguars off the field until the middle of next week. The coaching staff will make use of the excellent, modern facilities at NWHS to conduct tryouts and early practices until the teams can get on the field.
The start of practice also marks the beginning of Todd Varesco's tenure as the JV coach. The Magruder High School graduate is the sixth JV coach in Northwest history, and will be assisted by fellow Magruder gruaduate and NWHS staff member J.D. Kolick. Matt Noble returns for his sixth season at Northwest and his fifth as the school's longest-tenured varsity coach. Pitching coach Gene Saxman returns for his sixth season as well.
Both teams open the 2007 season on March 21 against cross-town rival Seneca Valley.

Conditioning Starts January 30, Lunch Videos Begin January 29, Plus Concil Update
January 14, 2007 --
Pre-season conditioning for all prospective baseball players, both returning and new, will begin on Tuesday, January 30 at 2:30 in Room 102. Conditioning sessions will run at that time every Tuesday and Thursday until the beginning of the season. Players should report to Room 102 dressed to workout. We will workout outside if possible, but if the weather does not permit we will workout indoors, so be prepared for both. The conditioning session consists of stretching, dumb bell work with three-pound dumb bells, and distance running. The first session will most likely run until 3:30, but following sessions should be over by 3:15. Please arrange your transportation accordingly. Pre-season conditioning is not required, but is strongly encouraged.
Beginning Monday, January 29, prospecitve players, both returning and new, are invited to eat lunch in Room 102. During these lunch periods we will be watching instructional videos beginning with the Harold Reynolds series on hitting co-starring Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn. Bring your lunch and come talk and learn about baseball!
The baseball council agreed to all items discussed in its first meeting. The council is currently working on a team slogan for the season as well as designs for the baseball t-shirts. A few fundraising ideas were kicked around, such as having a night at a local restaurant. Jim Tapley, the athletic director, has asked us to come up with $500 more to be able to install the sprinkler system in the outfield.
Coach Noble will prepare an order form for the Majestic fleece pullovers. These forms will be available on the first day of the second semester. Fleeces are expected to cost around $40.

Baseball Council Holds First Meeting
January 3, 2007 --
The brand new NWHS Baseball Council, despite sparse attendance, held its first meeting on January 3. The Council is made up of eight players representing each class at Northwest and is designed to help facilitate the flow ideas between the players and coaching staff.
Subject to final approval at the next meeting, several dates for activities were selected. The baseball program and interested parents will attend the Towson at Maryland college baseball game on Tuesday, May 1 at the University of Maryland, bringing back a tradition of attending a Maryland game each year started by former coach Jim Tapley and discontinued when Maryland's stadium underwent renovations. The players will tour the campus prior to the game and will eat dinner at the Adele Stamp Student Union located on campus.
The team party will once again return to Hard Times Cafe in Germantown. The party is tentatively set for Monday, June 4 at 6:30 PM. The party has been well attended in the past, with over 100 players, family members, and guests celebrating the just-concluded season.
Northwest Night with the Nationals will take place on either Tuesday, June 5 or Wednesday, June 6 at RFK Stadium when the home-town nine hosts the Pittsburgh Pirates. The date will be selected once the Nationals announce game times for home games. Tickets will be available for $5.00 each and will be available to family members and friends as well as players.
Each Monday beginning on January 29, returning players and prospects are invited to eat lunch in Room 102 and view the videos in the Harold Reynolds instructional series. Up first will be the hitting video that Reynolds has made with Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn.
Finally, the possibility of ordering the Majestic fleece pullovers the the coaches currently have for team members was discussed. Coach Noble will find out if the fleeces can be delivered prior to March 1 and will report back to the group at the next meeting, which is scheduled for Wednesday, January 10 during lunch in Room 102.

Field Day a Success
November 21, 2007 --
Sixteen players along with assistant coach Gene Saxman and master handyman Tommy Tolan (father of Jay, Class of 2006)worked to make the fall field day a big success. Trash was picked up, the field was weeded, raked, and prepared to be dragged and cut, l-screens were moved, the silver box was cleaned out (which was easy thanks to field hockey!)and weeds were "whacked," and the mound and plate area were touched up. All this work was done in just a little over an hour despite 44 degree temperatures. Mr. Tolan will fix the broken cable that supports the old batting cage as well as the brackets for the back of the Davies Scoreboard during the winter months. The coaching staff will hopefully be able to cut the infield one more time and perhaps even drag the infield next week should the ground dry out enough before the first freeze.
Special thanks to prospects and NWHS newcomers Dan Fitzgerald and Adam Marshall for lending a hand with the field. In all, only four returning players were unaccounted for, while several others were involved in winter sports or previously scheduled activities.
Be sure to keep checking in with Coach Noble in Room 102. Also, monitor the web site and/or the bulletin board outside of Room 102.
Have a Happy and Safe Thanksgiving!

Field Day Set for November 13
November 1, 2006 --
It's time to put the field to bed! All RETURNING players are expected to attend field clean-up day on Monday, November 13 at 2:30. Rain/bad weather days will be on November 14 and 15. Hopefully we will be done by 5:30.
Most of the tasks that need to be taken care of this year are minor. They include removing weeds from the infield dirt, repacking the mound in front of the rubber, filling the holes at the plate, first, and second, weedwhacking around the fence line and batting cage, edging the infield grass, picking up trash, cutting the grass, re-locating the sleeve for first base, draging the infield, re-arranging the silver box, moving porty to the dirt around home plate, storing the screens, and sweeping the sidewalks. The only two "large" jobs will be to replace home plate and to repair the damaged wire that holds up the old batting cage.
Please dress warmly and come prepared to work. With 26 returning players, we should be able to handle all the necessary work in one afternoon. If you have any questions, see, call, or e-mail Coach Noble.

Jaguars Wrap Up Fall Season
October 29, 2006 --
The Jaguars fall league baseball team wrapped up baseball action for 2006 with a hard-fought 3-2 loss in eight innings to Damascus at Blair High School on Sunday. The loss eliminates the Jaguars from the single-elimination post-season tournament.
A tremendous amount of thanks goes out to Tom Sutton for organizing both the fall and summer teams in 2006. Also thanks to Mr. Callahan, Mr. Krahling, and Mr. DiNardo for assisting Mr. Sutton with the fall team, and to Mr. Fitzgerald for keeping the scorebook during the fall.
With 21 players participating in the summer and 17 players playing in the fall, the Jaguars MCBA teams finished their most successful season ever. Look for the experience to translate into many good things in the spring of 2007.
Now it is time to take a break. Put the bats, balls, and gloves away. Let your body rest. You can lift and run, but even the big leaguers give their bodies a break from the actual routine of playing the game. Work on the grades because it is the second marking period report card that determines your eligibility for baseball.
Please stop by Room 102 to keep in touch. We will be having periodic meetings with selected players throughout the winter. Also, be sure to check the web site each week for updated news and information.

Jaguars Capture Sportsmanship Award Again
October 4, 2006 --
The Northwest baseball program received the Montgomery County Public Schools Sportsmanship Award for the 2006 baseball season. The award was presented to Coach Noble by athletic director Jim Tapley. It is the second time in the last three seasons that the award has been won by the baseball program.
Each program is evaluated by administrators and athletic directors from both Northwest and opposing schools as well as by game umpires. The award is a total program award as the fans of each team are evaluated as well as the players and coaches.
Congratulations to everyone for helping us win this award. By the way, the overall MCPS Sportsmanship Award was won by the Northwest athletic department for the second consecutive year. Thanks for your help. Let's win the award again in 2007!

Varesco Named New JV Coach; Kolick Also Joins Staff
September 21, 2006 --
Todd Varesco, a math teacher at Northwest High School, has been named the Jaguars new junior varsity baseball coach. He replaces Dr. Paul Bauer, who stepped down after three seasons. He becomes the sixth JV coach in NWHS's nine-year history.
The 34-year old graduate of Magruder High School in Derwood has served as a volunteer assistant coach and first base coach for the NWHS baseball program for the past four seasons. Additionally, Varesco is the varsity golf coach at Northwest and is also the football game ticket manager.
Varesco was a three sport athlete at Magruder. The 1990 graduate played varsity baseball for the Colonels and also played in the Gaithersburg Sports Association prior to his Magruder playing days. He also lettered in football and played for legendary coach Roy Lester, and also lettered in wrestling.
J.D. Kolick, a special education staff member at Northwest, will also join the baseball staff and serve as an assistant to both the JV and the varsity. The 1987 Magruder graduate was an excellent baseball player for the Colonels and will be making his coaching debut with the Jaguars in the spring.
Veteran pitching coach Gene Saxman returns for his sixth season at Northwest and rounds out the baseball staff. Saxman's son Glenn played third base in 1986 for head coach Matt Noble during Noble's first season as a head coach in Montgomery County. Saxman is actually the longest tenured staff member as he was an assistant to Jim Tapley the year before Noble took over in 2003.

2007 Schedule Announced
September 1, 2006 --
Nine home games and an April schedule that could vault the Jaguars to elite status in Montgomery County baseball highlight the 2007 baseball schedule released by Montgomery County. The complete schedule can be found by clicking on the schedule link to the left of this page.
The month of April could go a long way to establishing the Jaguars bragging rights for the upcoming season. After being off for ten days for Spring Break, Northwest returns to action on April 11 with a home game against Wootton. The Jaguars lost a heart-breaker in the bottom of the seventh inning last year at the Rockville school and will be looking for revenge in 2007. Two days later NWHS travels to Springbrook to face a Blue Devils squad that the Jaguars split with last season. Two big home games follow on April 17 and 19 when Northwest hosts Sherwood and Magruder.
The Jaguars will play their first game ever on a college campus on April 21 when they take on Richard Montgomery at Montgomery College-Rockville. The RM campus is being renovated, forcing the game to be moved to the nearby community college.
One of the season's biggest games will be on April 24 when NWHS hosts defending county and region champion Quince Orchard. Blake comes to Germantown on April 26 before the Jags wrap up the month with a trip to Damascus on April 28. The eleven games in seventeen days stretch may be one of the toughest in school history.
The season opens two miles up Route 119 when the Jaguars visit rival Seneca Valley. The home opener takes place on March 23 when NWHS will look to avenge back-to-back losses to Poolesville. Gaithersburg then visits Northwest on March 26, followed by road games at Churchill and Wheaton on March 28 and 29.
The front-end-loaded schedule features only three regular season tilts in May. On the third the Jags will wrap up their road schedule with a game at Watkins Mill. Kennedy visits NWHS on May 7 followed by a Senior Day contest with Clarksburg, the newest school in Montgomery County, on May 9. The 4A West Region playoffs begin with first round action on May 11, with games on May 14 and 16 leading up to the regional final on May 18. The state semi-final will be played on May 22, with the final taking place on May 25.
The JV schedule is almost the opposite of the varsity. When the varsity is at home against a particular school the JV is usually away against the same school at the same time. The couple of exceptions include the JV hosting Wheaton on May 28 while the varsity is at Churchill, and the JV playing at Sherwood on April 16, a day before the varsity teams meet at Northwest. The JV also wraps up its season on May 5 against Kennedy, a varsity off day.
The NWHS JV will also get to play a rare night game when the Baby Jags visit Blake at 6 PM on April 26. The JV plays 14 games and does not play Churchill or Clarksburg.
The 2007 teams will not be playing in games over Spring Break. Practices will be held on several days during the break for those players in town. A complete calendar will be distributed to returning players at a meeting to be held in mid-September.
