DEN CHIEF OPPORTUNITY

A leadership opportunity is available to each Troop 77 boy serving as a "Den Chief" for area Packs. DeWitt has two Cub Scout Packs that serve first through fifth graders in the area. Pack 277 is chartered by the Knights of Columbus and Pack 502 is chartered by Redeemer United Methodist Church. Both Packs would love to have Boy Scouts to match with their dens/adult leadership according to their age preference, weeknight availability, etc. Pack 502 dens meet once per month and then participate in one or two (optional) Pack activities each month throughout the school year. Contact information for Packs is avaialble from Troop Leadership.

Keep in mind this commitment would be in addition to a boy's commitment to Boy Scout Troop 77.

Each year during Pow Wow, which is a training day for Cub Scout Leaders held in February each year, the Council also offers a 6 hour training session for boys interested in serving as a den chief. Cost is typically $10 and includes lunch. Registration information can downloaded from the Chief Okemos web-site. Please keep our Troop Scoutmaster informed if this is an opportunity your son will be pursuing.

Larry Proctor, Troop 77 Committee Member, is very familiar with the training and would be a great resource if you have questions about the program.

This is a great leadership experience for your son. Solidifying the difference in their life between being a participant and being a leader.

Qualities of a good Den Chief include:

Cares about others
Care about scouting
Is willing to help
Is responsible
Works hard
Is trustworthy

Boy Scouts offer the following things to a Cub Scout Den:

Boy Scout Role Model
Scouting and Campcraft Skills
Hobby and Sports Skills
Leadership Skills
Scout Spirit
Know the "Ropes"
Understand the Scouts' Problems, Fears
Know What's Fun, What "Works"
Sense of Discovery
