The Rettger Scholarship is awarded to the player that best exemplifies all of the attributes that Michael Rettger brought to the Franklin Regional Basketball program before his untimely death.

The scholarship is determined through a vote of the players, coaches, Athletic Director and members of the Rettger Foundation. The boys and coaches have a vote as to who they believe should receive the award, while the AD and Rettger Foundation representatives vote on the quality and substance of the applicant essays.

The total value of the scholarship is $2,000 with $500 of that coming from our Booster organization. The recipient must meet the criteria set forth in the rules which include validation of full-time student status. The scholarship check will be awarded at next season's Rettger Invitational.

Mike Rettger Memorial Basketball Tournament

Mike Rettger, a 1997 graduate of Franklin Regional and Co-Captain of the 1997 Boy’s basketball team. This team was perhaps Franklin Regional’s best boy’s basketball teams in school history, twice finishing in 2^nd Place in the WPIAL AAAA tournament (1996-1997) as well finishing 2^nd in the PIAA State Tournament in 1997

Upon graduating from Franklin Regional, Mike went on to earn a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting from Washington & Jefferson College, where he achieved Dean’s List on multiple occasions.

After obtaining his degree, Mike was employed by Ernst & Young in Pittsburgh where he served as a staff auditor. In addition to performing his auditor duties, Mike was also pursuing his CPA certification when he fell ill to a rare brain illness.

Mike’s illness was discovered while out of town on business and he was rushed home for emergency surgery. Unfortunately, due to the timing of the diagnosis and complications arising from the illness, Mike passed away on November 20, 2003 following the surgery. Mike’s organs were immediately offered for donation. Mike’s friends and family are proud that many lives have been improved as a result of his participation in the organ donor program.

Mike’s friends and family have since been very strong supporters of the Franklin Regional basketball program as well as many other local charities.

Congratulations to Jake on winning the award and thank you to Michael Fisch for his participation in the process.

The Booster family will miss both young men as they begin the next chapter of their lives.
